The engine trick Mercedes and Red Bull have found is that they're keeping the intake valves open past bottom dead center so that there isn't compression until the cylinder comes back up a bit. The rules state that the ratio is the cylinder volume when compression beginning vs ending. It is NOT top dead center vs bottom dead center, which is probably what the spaghetti and teriyaki engineers assumed. If the intake valve is open, there is no compression, therefore they don't have to count the entire stroke length against the compression ratio, it just forces air back into the intake manifold.This is insanely common in cars, it's called the Miller cycle. I believe it's used in the Prius and a bunch of other gutless hybrids. Honda, Audi, and Ferrari should be ashamed they didn't see this one. I'm not even an auto engineer and I spotted the loophole as soon as I read the regulation.The compression ratio will still be 16:1, but the expansion ratio can be much much higher, as high as they want. Which should be pretty high because these are turbo engines, compression ratio is irrelevant vs expansion ratio, they can just up the boost to get the same effect.If the ratio is 16:18 like rumors are suggesting, that means the energy they can extract from the fuel is [(18-16)/16]^2, or about 1.6%. That doesn't sound like a ton but at 1000bhp that's 16bhp advantage which is about twice the estimated difference between the 2025 Renault vs the 2025 ferrari/honda/mercedes.
