form previous thread:

what resources can I use to learn football? not just the positions and their basic functions, but like strategy behind formations, reading a defense/offense, and making adjustments accordingly?

I have a friend who I play Madden with, and he's always like "oh that's a shotgun, so I'll play this defense, etc etc" and I always get trounced. how can I learn to do that?

coverage this game has been way too good for deep shots
just look at the statline for Mitchell on Terry
the stat to look at going into the game was the very few turnovers by Jayden
that is a tell that he doesn't take those kind of chances unless the the deck is stacked very heavily in his favor

I can’t imagine how people live life in a flyover shithole like Philadelphia.

Here in New York the cuisine is unmatched, you don’t even need a car to get around, and the crime isn’t half as bad. Filthydelphia is basically built on the sewer runoff of NYC. They have no healthy food options and they are worse than Detroit when it comes to crime.

What do you think about my theory of there not being any offense or defense eras and instead it's an endless cycle:
>League has a lot of elite WRs and it results in a lot of points scored, but RBs get paid less and become extinct. It is now an "offensive era".
>Teams realize there's no longer any elite RBs to stop cover 2, so they spam the coverage and very few points are scored. It is now a "defensive era."
>Rinse and repeat....
>>
Lowkey one of the great signs form this game from Philly's perspective is Kenny Gainwell actually showing some juice for the first time in a while. Those couple big runs he broke were clutch.

Caleb Williams is doing fine, don’t let the team stats deceive you. Once he gets a better offensive line he is going to put the league on notice and likely win a Super Bowl or three. He is the next mahomes, yall keep doubting though…you don’t know ball
>>
Take away the garbage-time drive and it was 194 yards and 10 points.

My Commies are 100% cooked and buckbroken, aren't they? All we need now to top off this meltdown is for the Cowboys to necro the old rivalry and gape us next week.

This is abso fucking lutely a seething comnutard who wanted to get the discussion off how much his team choked
>>
>>145642771
I believe that has a lot to do with the Eagles making it an obvious tell that they aren't running the ball when Saquon is on the field which is a cue for defenders to stack the box when Saquon is in
so after spending the entire game abandoning the run when Barkley is iff the field you suddenly give Gainwell the ball it caught the defence on their back foot
>>
>>145642771
I laughed because teams expect gainwell to basically just stand there until Saquon gets some water but they actually used him on those delayed handoffs and they worked perfectly
>>
>Washington is 7-4
>Philly is 8-2

Huh, I've gotten so distracted by how shitty the Giants and the Cowboys are this season that the Eagles and the Commies actually being good kind of crept up on me. Decent odds the NFC East actually sends two teams to the playoffs this year.

It's limb length.

Folks with heat-adapted genetics tend to have smaller torsos and longer limbs. This happens to lend itself well to athletics, which is partly why we see such a high prevalence of black athletes - generally overrepresented in proportion to population levels.

It just so happens that for DBs, this is especially potent. There are no corners in the league with an arm length shorter than 31 inches, and no pro bowl corners with arms shorter than 32 inches. Corners are an extreme physical outlier among a profession that's already made up of genetic outliers.

E: and then to add, since black people are genetically predisposed to be better corners than white people, you get more black corners. Which then can create a myth that white fellas can't be good corners. Particularly amongst HS coaches who are kind of ignorant in general, and likely have no understanding of the genetic factors at play, so they just say "well black guys are just better at it". Not understanding that within the entire population of white HS football players, there are likely plenty of guys with the necessary genetics to be excellent. Which both discourages white guys from playing the position, and encourages black guys.

So there's an underlying physical reason, leading to a societal bias perpetuating and strengthening it.

The good news is that a couple high profile good white corners can start to change the societal portion. The "bad" news is the underlying genetic reality isn't going anywhere.

BG is still impacting games. If it's true that Huff is limited mostly because of his hand then maybe he can continue to improve as Fangio uses him the right way.
DT behind Carter is a worry for me. At least one of Davis or Milt needs to take the next step. They're both great players but not game changers yet.

Basketball culture revolves around jacking off the same 15 superstars every year, there are substantially more "player" fans in the NBA where people just root for a team based on who's on it at the time compared to the NFL which is why bandwagonners are much more prominent in basketball.
>>
>>145643452
Belichick sure but I just remember Brady being a robot for the majority of his career, compared to players of similar pedigree in other sports he didn't really participate in the media circus all that much.

>NFCE intra-division game
>on Thursday
I was expecting a bit of a shitshow, and that's pretty much what it was. Neither team played great (though both defenses played better than expected), but Washington's botched 4th down and the Eagle's offense finding some momentum through Barkley late was enough. I think the rematch in DC will be a better and more esthetically pleasing game, and I won't be surprised if the Commanders win.
Anyway, GG, der bros. I respect >your team (for the first time in a while).

Eagles are ascending and not fraudulent. Unironically Hurts and Sirianni is their weakness. The defense under new coordinator and some elite rookies and second year guys are getting better and better. Offense under new coordinator is com8ng together. >>145644641
He will continue to take the 'explosive play' over the check down because it's coached into him to do that in this offense, but he's so much better st taking checkdowns with Moore. The play that stands out is the attempt to Devonta in the endzone where a TE (forget which one) is wide open for a checkdown yet he threw a 50-50 jump ball instead. It is what it is. I thought Hurts played well desu, he threw the ball away when needed too.

Lamar has played four full games against Pittsburgh and has lost three of them. He's probably not playing the full game this Sunday either. Their pass defense is 32nd in the league and Russ, Pickens and Williams are all equipped to exploit that, while the Steelers' defense is also positioned to neutralize Baltimore's greatest strengths. The game is a coinflip for the Ravens at best, and if Lamar goes out of this game due to aggravating the knee injury he has, the Ravens are going to collapse for the rest of the season and there will only be one good team in the AFC North.

If the Steelers win this game, they only have three games after that that that I would characterize as "hard." Eagles, Ravens 2, and Chiefs. Which makes their expected outcome (Winning all the games they're favored in and losing all the ones they're not.) 12-5.

If the Ravens lose this game, they'll be 7-4, with four hard games of their own. Chargers, Eagles, Steelers 2 and Texans. Which makes their expected outcome 9-8.

The Ravens could easily win most of those games, and the Steelers could lose most of theirs because they seem to lose games they should win, and end up somewhere else, but the remaining schedule favors the Steelers and makes things hard for the Ravens.

That was definitely scheme. They didn't try a single deep pass all game. I was kinda surprised by that too be cause he has thrown deep and taken chances before. Idk what they were going for but he checked down to a TE or RB so many times. He only completed 4 passes to WRs. It was either the eagles secondary really shut it down or this was the game plan. You could tell a lot of them were one read or check down plays.

Eagles have been the dominant team in the NFC East pretty consistently for my whole life. Every year it seems like they’re either good or something is wrong that they will eventually fix. When I was a kid the Giants were relevant but that hasn’t been true in a long time. The cowboys are chokers and jobbers and I never take them seriously. Washington is just a joke.
>>
>>145645172
I have to admit, they're looking really good. But last season they looked good too, and then suddenly collapsed, so maybe that happens again.
>>
>>145645172
I wasn't wrong though. I had them as Super Bowl contenders going into the season and didn't understand why they were being so underrated. The first few weeks were rough but I never lost the belief that they were top dogs of the NFC along with Detroit.
>>
>>145645207
nfc east not having a repeat winner for 20 years is wild, especially considering the eagles and cowboys(in the regular season) have usually been good, and the giants and commodes have usually been bad

Yeah but what’s the split? The last 23 years went what way? I’m gonna guess 10 division titles to the eagles and 13 to everyone else?

If they do manage to make it to the Super Bowl by beating Detroit in the NFC Championship, There's a non zero chance we get an Eagles/Steelers Pennsylvaniab Owl, which might have the lowest viewership of any Super Bowl in recent history.

Also, the Steelers are technically the original Eagles who relocated to Pittsburgh, and the Eagles are technically the original Steelers who relocated to Philadelphia.

Art Rooney sold the Steelers to Alexis Thompson who was going to move them to Boston, and used the proceeds to split the original Eagles ownership with Bert Bell, intending to create an All-Pennsylvania team, which the other NFL owners did not permit.
Which lead to Art Rooney regretting the deal and trading territorial rights back.
The corporate entity which operated the Steelers officially remained "The Philadelphia Eagles Football Club Inc." until 1945 after the Steelers' mergers with the Eagles and Cardinals during World War II.
>>
>>145645342

Hurts isn't the best QB in the league but he's one of the best at doing what it takes to win games. Like he can struggle early but then make a couple throws in the second half to turn things around. Or how he slides a lot on scrambles now but does an immense job at picking up first downs with his legs in the clutch.
I think it fits in with his (fairly goofy) "keep the main thing the main thing" mantra. He's a winner.

It definitely wasn't a great game for Jalen, but he kept the ball out of harms way and did just enough with his arm to keep defenses honest. He was oddly inaccurate last night too, usually the issue is him not throwing the ball

Nope, I’ve just seen a consistent performance in the last few weeks. The only question mark is can they actually win a playoff game. Russel Wilson has played a lot more than 96 games though. Is this counting his first 96, or his last 96? Because his time in Denver is going to drag his stats down in the last 96, because he didn't have any resources and they actively sabotaged him on top of that.

Here's a play showing Mitchell's impact on the game without showing up on the stat sheet. Daniels really wants to go to McLaurin at the bottom of the screen here. He stares him down. But there's no window, Mitchell covers him perfectly. It ends with BG getting the sack.

Keep dreaming buddy.

>Coach
Reid vs Tomlin, would be the biggest coaching mismatch of the century

>QB
Mahomes vs Russel, again, a huge mismatch. Mahomes is 1st place in all stats in the playoffs including completion percentage, passer rating, TD:INT, win rate, etc.... don't confuse playoff Mahomes with normal Mahomes.

>Defense
Chiefs win again, they've held teams to similar points but the Chiefs defense went up against the Ravens, 49ers, Bengals, and Bucs. Meanwhile, the Steelers have played the Giants, Jets, Colts, and Cowboys. LOL.

>Kicker
Butker will be back by the playoffs and is currently the best in the league now that Tucker is struggling.

>Special teams
Might give this to Steelers.
>>
>>145645914
There is a very brief window where Jayden and Terry could have connected, but it's the kind of throw that Drew Brees could make and not many others. You need great anticipation and perfect timing. It was a revis Island kind of performance from Quinyon
>>
>>145645954
If the ball got to him right here, then we're talking about an unbelievable pitch and catch. That's the kind of coverage we saw all game and honestly, all season
>>
>>145645928
>Reid vs Tomlin, would be the biggest coaching mismatch of the century
Correct. Tomlin would coach circles around Reid who is incapable of basic clock managemen and has never won anything without Mahomes.
>>
>>145645912
Mahomes has only completed 6 seasons so if you're doing a fair comparison you have to wait until he finishes the 7th season. Interesting enough, Mahomes has played so bad that Wilson overtook him for the 2nd best TD:INT ratio of all time behind Rodgers though Mahomes will obviously not continue to play this bad. He's missing 6 receivers, Steelers by contrast have all their weapons yet still took some hot Ls.
>>
>>145645954
>>145645975
Yeah, I hear you. But that's about as good as you can cover in the NFL. Receivers always have the advantage. And that's a very tough throw, like you said it would require incredible timing and accuracy. Also I'd say Q is still in position to make a play on the catch point even if the ball gets there on time, and he's shown great ability to break up the catch in situations like that.

The Chiefs have won all but two of their games this year by one score, the Steelers as an institution are historically and consistently very good at winning in close games with clutch plays. The Steelers Defense is the second best in the NFL right now and the AFC North style of game they play is one that the current Chiefs don't actually have much organizational experience with.
The Steelers have the personnel to stay competitive with the Missouri Chiefs and the coaching staff and culture to win in that situation.

>>145645993
The Steelers didn't have Russell Wilson in either of their losses, one of which was against Joe Flacco, who I'll readily admit, has had Pittsburgh's number for a long time, nothing but respect for him. And the other was in a game that didn't start until after 10 PM. And both were close losses that came down to one bad play, despite those confounding factors.

I knew the Steelers weren't winning the Colts game as soon as Richardson was out of the game, and I had a bad feeling about the weather delay in the Cowboys game, the Steelers never do well with those. And they still managed to stay competitive in both.
You're discounting an organization that hasn't lost more games than it won for two decades despite having some remarkably bad teams in that time, and has only had three head coaches since the AFL-NFL merger. Personnel aren't everything in football. And one player, no matter how impressive his statistics, isn't either.
If they were, the Steelers would have eight or nine Super Bowl wins right now.

The Steelers lost to Flacco on the back of their own mistakes on offense, not because of the defense, and they managed to get two interceptions from Rogers. You can't say those are mistakes. He got outplayed.
Minkah is so effective that no quarterback is even daring to risk putting the ball where he can get it, which is why his stats have declined while the rest of the secondary has improved. And they had extremely decisive wins against the teams they were expected to have extremely decisive wins against. You can't invalidate the results when they're exactly the results you would expect given the schedule they have.

I acknowledged what the Steelers are institutionally bad at, playing Joe Flacco and keeping composure after weather delays, with the same weight as what I acknowledged they're institutionally good at. Those are serious weaknesses. If Mahomes was playing for another AFC North team this whole time and we saw him twice a year, or the game on Christmas or the AFC Championship game gets delayed because of a Buffalo style blizzard or something, I'd be very concerned about Mahomes. But I'm not, because one of those things is just not the case, and the other probably isn't going to happen, even though I can't rule it out.

It's not superstition or making excuses if it's consistent trends you can attribute to the culture of the organizations playing the game.

Every team in the NFL has talented players who present a challenge to the respective sides they face, and any team can beat any other. No game is easy. (Jacksonville and Carolina excepted.)

The NFL is in talks of adding two more uprights to the FG, making the middle two uprights would be worth 4 points. I think it could make the ends of a game more interesting. Imagine you're down 3 at the end, you can go for the 4pts and the win but you risk hitting the uprights

They'd have to make the middle uprights a projection, suspended ribbons, or set them behind the main uprights. Because all having them on the same post would do is make 3 point attempts exactly as hard as 4 point attempts and make doinks a common occurrence.

>>145646727
yeah you might be right on that. maybe no physical uprights and use sensors instead. The 4 points should be just for field goals longer than 40 yards. Or maybe use really skinny middle uprights

it's always been completely unusable for cb's to even glance at as a tool. Denzel Ward was probably the most important defensive player to a defense last year and it had him at most in the low 70s last year

Actually 2 uprights behind the regular wouldn't be a bad idea. If it goes through the first uprights you get 3, if it goes an extra 5 yards through the middle it's an extra point. If it's an extra point attempt and they want to go for two they have to kick it ten extra yards back

I think that extra point rule would pretty much obsolete the current two point conversion, because if you have a good kicker, you'd be getting that 100% of the time regardless of starting from another ten yards back, unless the wind is bad or the ball is wet, and even if the kicker missed the bonus point, they'd still get the normal point.
I think it could work if you also constrained the kicker to using a drop kick though. That would give the incentive for them to start practicing it again, and maybe they'd get good enough at that that we'd see an even balance of regular two point conversions and two point kicks.

The higher the pick the less likely it is that they draft some injury prone bust defensive lineman.
>>
>>145646901

>>
>>145646984
If they don't get to the NFCCG at least, yeah I think he should go. He's a great vibes guy when the vibes are good, but they're still not winning because of him.
Obviously this all depends on who they can get to replace him though. I wouldn't drop him for some scrub, it would ruin the locker room vibes without any benefit.

Sounds like copium. What happened exactly? He left the game with hurt ribs in week 7 but came back in and has been playing ever since? First few headlines I read when I googled “Jayden Daniels Injury” were about a cut on his ring finger.

Tua is a thick Samoan which is an ethnic group that is known for having good chins in boxing/mma. Jayden is one of the skinniest twinks we've seen in a long time. Him getting injured was predictable.
