Onosato will be Yokozuna in one year and one basho from now.
As foretold.

Is there any universe where if Wakamoto and Daiesho both have winning records and Wakataka has 10+ wins that the commitee gives us three sekiwake? This is assuming Kirishima continues his shittery and crashes out.

also guys does anyone know where I can watch last night's makuuchi bouts? I went to sleep after juryo and the usual spot I watch this morning didn't have anything up

he can't
this is only his first tournament at ozeki, yokozuna promotion needs 2 tournaments at ozeki that meet the requirements*

11 is usually the threshold, but it's pretty frequent to have more than 2 sekiwake.

Onosato needs to amp up his pre bout theatrics, his 'just another day at the office' attitude indicates a satisfaction with his current rank which will never get him promoted.

If a komusubi gets 11+ wins, they make sekiwake period. It's so they don't deny someone who's put up a sufficiently strong performance. Joi-maegashira usually get this too, though of course the number of wins needed increases the further down they are.

>>
>>145716324
which Komusubi do you think is getting 11+? WKMT looks like he's getting Kirishima's soon-to-be open Sekiwake slot anyway. No need for a 3rd. a theoretical 12 win WKTK probably only gets Komusubi, same they did to Ichinojo 2022 Nagoya -> Aki
>>
>>145710465
Absolutely not. The record for fewest bashos from Ozeki to Zuna is TECHNICALLY 2, set by Terunofuji who to be desu was an exception due to restarting his entire career from already being an Ozeki.
>He got a yusho right before Ozeki promotion
>He got a yusho after being re-promoted to Ozeki
>His second re-Ozeki basho was the epic 14-0 faceoff against Hakuho in his final basho
Teru was clearly worthy of the rope after this, and the lone Zuna retiring meant the JSA had a vested interest in a new one.

Aside from the exception of Teru at 2, two rikishi did it raw in 3 basho, those being Chiyonofuji and Asashoryu. Unless Onosato wins out this basho he isn't going to get there in 3.
>>
>>145716922
how many yusho does he need onosato and others in his stable to win before the japs proclaim him as ackshually the best yokozuna ever
>>
>>145717115
13-2 isn't going to be required to win this 'sho.
Onosato was undefeated at this point in March and won with 13-2, there aren't any undefeated competitors left this time
>>
>>145717057
I'm talking hypotheticals, not specifics. I don't expect it will happen this tournament, but if WTK somehow won out he'd make sekiwake.
>>
>>145717378
Asashoryu at his peak won 20 yusho in 26 basho. Not even Hakuho won that many in such a small timeframe, taking 28 bashos to go from his 2nd to his 21st yushos. Do you think Onosato can win 19 yushos in the next 23 bashos including this one?
>>
>>145717600
I'm pretty sure it was Kisenosato himself who said that a 12-3 yusho doesn't make a Yokozuna.
>Makes Zuna
>Goes 13-2 yusho one fucking time as Zuna
>Retires after posting a 10-5 in the midst of a sea of intais
What an actual fag Zuna he was.

>>
>>145719733
Onosato is his only good student, and Onosato would've been successful under anyone considering his amateur career. He also has Shirokuma who's currently jobbing in Juryo.
>>
Speaking of which, does anyone know the terms under which Onosato joined Kisenosato's stable? What are the odds the JSA pushed for it so the next nip Zuna could be the student of the last nip Zuna?

New to sumo, I’m surprised to hear about wrestlers meeting 20+ times and have 15+ yrs in the sport. Is it a lucrative career? Where should I start to learn about the greats and best eras?
>>
>>145722260
>Is it a lucrative career?
Not compared to western sports, but sumo is more about tradition, culture, and honour than money. The guys in the top two divisions earn an annual salary of about $100k before considering any prizes they win or advertisement/merchandising deals. Top guys live very comfortably so the money isn't really the point.

>Where should I start to learn about the greats and best eras?
Go watch youtube content about Hakuho, the "greatest of all time". Then go watch youtube content about Asashoryu, the greatest of all time who had his career cut short due to being part of a criminal gang. His nephew Hoshoryu is currently the 3rd highest ranked active sumo and a frontrunner in the ongoing tournament in which he looks like the favourite.

Tbh eras are shit because you don't really know what went on 100+ years ago. Here, go watch Yokozuna Akebono's final yusho, it's an utterly vulgar display of raw brute force and power.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B_5p_FiANQ

That first bout holy fucking shit my man, the difference in power is incredible. The way Akebono returns to his starting position to bow with the look of a psychopathic serial murderer on his face is some real good shit.
>>
>>145722495
Hell yea bro thanks I’m saving your post
>>
>>145722260
>lucrative
Not as much as international sports. Decent money + sponsorship opportunities if you reach sekitori (division 1/2) status, but stability (food/shelter/clothes/allowances) is generally present even for the full-time journeymen fucking around in the lower divisions.
>Where should I start to learn about the greats and best eras?
I'll recommend some rikishi that I feel are worth researching based on that description, they should have some Youtube highlights/documentaries:
>Hakuho
>Asashoryu
>Chiyonofuji
>Akebono
>Takanohana
>Wakanohana
>>
>>145722663
Since you seem genuine I'll give you a tldr about some of the current guys. I've not been watching all that long in comparison to other people but here's a rundown of the current top dudes (Sanyaku):

>Terunofuji
Only current "active" Yokozuna. Wins every basho he attends, has only attended 3 in the last 2 years. Complete monster of a man with no knees and diabetes.
>Kotozakura
Grandson of the former Yokozuna Kotozakura who wants to take his grandfather's name back to the highest rank of sumo. Has four tits and is very physically powerful if a little immobile. Hasn't won a yusho yet which desu is poor form for an Ozeki.
>Hoshoryu
Nephew of the former Yokozuna Asashoryu who is sick and tired of three hour long phonecalls from his uncle about how he needs to improve his sumo game. Is the only current top guy to focus primarily on throwing his opponents as opposed to pushing them out and the current favourite to win this basho. His bout with Wakatakakage this basho was him literally flipping the cunt onto his ass, good shit.
>Onosato
The hot ticket. Broke the record for fastest Ozeki promotion, has two yushos under his belt since makuuchi debut in January, is odds on favourite for next Yokozuna. Won the last basho but is one win behind the pace at the moment. Literally cannot beat Wakatakakage or Abi but is a complete steamroller who does not move backwards otherwise.
>Kirishima
The first Mongolian to make Ozeki and be demoted instead of promoted to Yokozuna. Is floundering hard currently and ruining 75% of fantasy sumo teams.
>Daieisho
The ultimate in Sekiwake technology. Will go 8-7 until he retires of boredom.
>Abi
A piece of shit. Loves to nodowa (throat push) at the tachiai (initial meet at the start of a bout).
>Wakamotoharu
Very honorabru solid sumo. Brother of Wakatakakage who is also in the top division.
>Shodai
Lord of Chaos, former yusho-less Ozeki who probably shouldn't have been given the Komusubi slot over Oho or Wakatakakage.
>>
>>145711928
>>
>>145722952
Yea I watched all the highlight from the past week and I’m starting to learn the names and see which ones are too old or too small or not as technically skilled. I do wish they were slightly longer best 2 out of 3

The highlights cut a lot
full length of a tournament, including all divisions, is like 8.5 hours long or even more

personally I keep track of a number of wrestlers outside the top divisions so there's a lot to watch
>>
>>145723707
*full length of one day of a tournament
>>
>>145723594
Astounding video that is. Chiyonofuji the absolute beast.
>>
>>145723733
yeah guys these days don't eat as clen or tren as hard if you know what I mean
>>
>>145723759
tbdesu I don't care if rikishi do roids. They basically need to to keep up with the schedule they're given by the JSA.
>>
>>145723759
You can say what you want about PEDs. The guy was 250lbs throwing around 400lb guys that train all day to not get thrown around. He beat 550lb konishiki 4 times in that streak.
>>
Imagine if Onosato started juicing
that would be nuts
>>
Nobody associated with sumo cares if the guys are gassing, and it's legal under Japanese law. Sumo isn't associated with the IOC so nobody gives a shit.
The reason why Chiyonofuji and others in his era were gassing and why fewer if any are now is simply the cost. The 80s were the bubble period when billions of yakuza yen were flowing through sumo like a gravy train, and even unsalaried veterans were living well simply on all the perks the sekitori and supporters were throwing around. Now not so much, and there's increased scrutiny around yakuza money.
>>
I am going to get a tattoo of Nabatame if he kk’s this basho. Dubs and you can decide where I get it.
>>
>>145724233
NABA on one asscheek. TAME on the other.
>>
I am a complete ignorant when it comes to copyright laws, so bear with me: Is there a place I can watch without the ads? Why do the streamers deliberately put on recorded commercials from YouTube?
>>
>>145724423
This is your fault for choosing the path of least resistance. Just search kyushu basho into Youtube, look for livestreams instead of videos, and you'll easily find someone streaming the Abema broadcast.

One thing I’ve been really impressed by after watching sumo for about 2 years now is the accuracy of the refs / judges.. they seem to pretty much always make the right call… compared to refs in other sports these guys are total studs… unless they’re getting a signal from someone off camera who’s checking video replay it’s quite remarkable
>>
Manletbros WE WON
>>
>>145725364
retardkun i have some news
>>
>>145725364
One of the ringside judges, or rikishi named hakuho, has to signal for the monoi first.
But yeah they have a team up in the video booths checking replays, the head shimpan always wears an earpiece.
>>
>>145725677
If the judges actually have indirect access to those video feeds that makes some of their calls even more baffling. I always just assumed the replays were for us.
>>
>>145725364
It helps that the judges are all elders who are all former wrestlers, so they know what to look for from practical experience. If all referees had to be former players you'd get something similar.
>>
>>145725677
Hakuho's autism is incredible.

When I said the Ozeki winning was routine I didn't mean that it always happens; more that it's what should've been happening all along and now it's happening so like okay. It's all just so uneventful so far. Takanosho threatening to repeat his July performance and Kirishitma tanking are the only things happening right now, and even then Kirishitma is clawing his wins back and might even go KK if he gets lucky.

>>
Is there any particular reason everybody hates hosh here? Apart from him not becoming a zuna faster.
>>
>>145735400
I don't hate him, but I'm not high on him either. After his awful performance in Aki, I had him pinned to make a strong comeback this 'sho, but I also think he's going to look weaker again after this tourney. Maybe not 8-7 level, but I woudn't expect any more than 10 wins in January. He's been consistent in his inconsistency up until now, but maybe this is the turning point for him and ends up making a zuna run from here. I'd put more money on him not though.

The year is 20XX (XXth year of Reiwa). Everyone does oshizumo at dai yokozuna levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on tachiai priority. The torinaoshi injury metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide bouts. Ozumo has reached its pinnacle. The low tier maegashira are living in make-koshi poverty. It seems nothing can stop the great leader of 20XX, Daiki “Onosato” Nakamura, and his tsukedashi (plr.), the makushita TD who live in massive heyas where they levitate while performing dai yokozuna-level tsuppari on one hand, and forcefeeding alcohol to deshi in the other. The honbasho metagame has gotten to this point where everything is fought out to theoretical perfection, so sekitori wrestle until one of them dislocates a shoulder, and that's the fight.

He gives some sloppy bows sometimes, he threw a mild tantrum when Gonoyama wouldn't put his hands down first at the tachi-ai a while back. I personally kind of thought he was a dick for it for a while, but he really is the top ranker providing the most entertaining matches, so I've warmed to him.

>>
>>145749286
Depends what he's trying to train. If he wants to hit his lower back and glutes hard he's doing fine. If he's trying to do a standard deadlift then fucking hell son bend those legs what the fuck.
>>
>>145749336
>Depends what he's trying to train. If he wants to hit his lower back and glutes hard he's doing fine
Anon, no, this is not fine in any case, ever. There are proper movements to hit glutes and hamstrings. lifting for lower back is how you go to snap city. what he is doing is not one of them, ever.
>>
>>145749286

Haven't seen anyone not being retarded in the gym yet. I mean look at this shit: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5be-PFJ_uaA

>>145749336
Let's be honest, he has no idea what he is trying to hit here. Lower/rounded back for 3 reps is probably not a good idea in general. And he looks so unstable the entire time, constantly adjusting his legs and arms.
>>
>>145749286
Chances are most of them are just mimicing exercises off YouTube videos because the stables can't afford a dedicated weightlifting coach.
>>
>>145748911
>>145749404
People watch this and then wonder why guys are getting more injured lately.
Sumo would be unironically better if they put the weights away until they could afford to get someone to train them properly. They're just fucking themselves up. I'm not a hardcore purist but the advantage to all the traditional exercises is they were formulated over centuries to help train guys without injuring them.
>>
>>145749404
Honestly Teru's form isn't terrible for rows, he's just handling so much weight that it's impossible to keep "correct" form no matter how hard you try. The real critique here is his pathetic range of motion.

>>
Which sumo wrestlers are most likely to be pathologically addicted to scat?
>>
>>145749715
There are still a lot of stables that practice rudimentary traditional training only, where they are doing calisthenics and light-moderate dumbbell work at most. I don't think a single stable has invested in a high quality weight lifting gym yet, but I bet it is going to happen in the next 10 years. Haven't there already been some rumblings about stables wanting to move out to the country where land is cheap so they can build whole facilities specialized to training? You can tell the difference between guys who are including proper weight training in their regimen just by their physiques (and who is probably blasting gear like a madman as well.) Just imagine the freaks we'll be seeing in 10 years when they really dial in the powerlifting, proper nutrition, and pharmaceutical usage. Those guys will be as big as mountains.
>>
>>145749890
Abi. I imagine he's done a few shoots himself.
>>
>>145749904
Isn't there a stable that's tried to go a little more high tech in their training? Nakamura maybe? I think Sumo Prime Time had a video on them. They had an oxygen chamber for some gay reason like recovery. Their gym looked a bit better than most, but honestly high tech gyms are pointless. You can do all the big compounds on a half rack.
>>
>>145749951
iirc their gym was a squat rack, a bench, a bar, a set of weights, and a dumbbell set. This was referred to as a "sports gym". My nigga this is professional athletics, my podunk high school MOGGED that shit HARD.
>>
>>145749988
Like I said, you can do all the big compounds on a half rack, you don't need mountains of equipment. You're either a gym equipment salesman or a useful idiot who got suckered by one.
>>
>>145750022
I'm a compoundcel through and through, trust me. One set of bare minimum equipment is simply insufficient imo. Get a dedicated deadlift platform, get these niggas training heavy cleans. I think some machines wouldn't be bad, like a leg press, but they aren't necessary.
>>
>>145750123
There are 5 major compounds, and not one of them requires specialist equipment.
>dedicated deadlift platform

It's nice to have a deadlift platform so you aren't unnecessarily beating up your equipment, especially if you're using bumper plates.

>>145750250
It's more extensive than I remembered, I totally forgot they had 2 racks besides the bench. Get these guys squatting 650lbs a piece with 3D delts and enough test e to kill a horse and we'll know what a truly dominant rikishi looks like. Hip thrust the universe.

>>

Nakamura doesn't have room for anything else, they're across the street from the Kogugikan. Your high school wasn't on $1000/square foot real estate.
>>
150lb najima flailed his way to a 5-1. It's strange to see such small guys in the dohyo. I've been heavier than that since around when I entered high school and I am definitely not fat. Makes me wonder if those guys are trying to prove something
>>
I think the skinny guys are at a point in their sumo career where they're considering if it's worth destroying their bodies to progress further.

>lifting is easy to figure out
Lifting properly requires someone who can coach your form for you. If you do it yourself then you'll end up with bad habits that increase the risk of injury. If it's a bunch of people self-trained spotting each other, like I imagine most sumo stables are, then they don't know what to look for in proper form, and more importantly they don't know why it's proper form and how stresses on the body accumulate based on positions. There's a reason why professional coaches need actual degrees for this.
>>
>>145751568
If he couldn't beat the bronze bvll back on day 15 in March when he had a busted ankle he isn't doing it now lmao.

Will sumo wresting ever transition to a "ripped body" phasew? Where the new meta will be being lean (boxer or MmA body) and strength and agility will outperform pure mass. Or is that not realistic?
>>
>>145752593
There are no weight classes, there is a reason these guys try to be as big as possible. Guys like Chiyonofuji are an exception.
>>
>>145752593
Mass will always be important because it helps defend against being pushed and thrown. Mass will be even more important the stronger wrestlers get because it'll be necessary to defend against greater strength. The most we'll get is guys being ripped in addition to large, but you're not getting a large number of lean guys unless the ruleset of sumo changes drastically to the point where it's no longer sumo.
>>
im convinced you have to be a redditor in order to hate on hoshoryu
who else is doing it like him? if it was asashoryu era wold you be talking shit as well? fucking fags i dont even like nephew like that my favs are tama and nobdog
>>
>>145752593
>Where the new meta will be being lean
No. The Hawaiians already cemented the idea that having both fat and muscle makes you incredibly broken as opposed to just being lean and with all of the university sumo prospects (which is where many of the new generation of sekitori are coming from as opposed to starting from square one like how it was in the past) being predominantly pusher-thrusters where mass is good, that's not going to change any time soon.
>strength and agility will outperform pure mass.
There is already a degree of awareness that there is an upwards trend of wrestler weight and injury that's acknowledged by a recommendation paper commissioned by the JSA in 2021. Whether the stablemasters implement training strategies that focus on the former in an effort to reduce the risk of injury and/or premature retirement as a product of the latter is something we can't really predict.
