This is a second OSRG, seperate from the main osrg thread, where you CAN talk about 2e, retroclones, and any osr content you want.
This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

You do know that everyone's aware that only trolls say storyshit/storygames/storyfaggotry, right?

It's one of the most obvious and immediate tells.

You're aware that only storyfaggots get butthurt when they are called out for what they are, right, mongoloid?

No thread question. I guess I'll ask for advice from some anons here.
I'm planning on running a Shadowdark game soon. I'm wanting to flavor it as something not-european fantasy. Currently leaning towards arabic/persian themed as that is decently promoted, but nothing is set yet. Any good sources for non-european based games.

>Welcome to TODD! This thread is for OPEN discussion of TSR-era Dungeons & Dragons (OD&D, Basic D&D, and AD&D including 2e) and related games, such as retroclones and OSR-adjacent games (OSE, BFRPG, S&W, LotFP, DCC, C&C, etc.).

Lmao this thread literally is just a rerun of /todd/, it's even obvious that it's the same guy seething e.g. >>94463986. Don't you remember how embarrassingly it died the last time? Let it go, kanigga. You lost. Let it go.

It was obviously comical hyperbole but since it went right over your head and you're being a humourless dick about it.

Guy who learnt his techniques as a kid and has to match hundreds of years old paints, glazes, finishes using materials which he has often has first to source the raw materials for, many of which haven't been made for centuries, before he can try mixing them without knowing the exact proportion of ground, pigments, solvents, binders, other additives, size of pigment particles, how they will be affected by the need to layer, apply a surface treatment, sand down, match texture, artificially age, let alone all the other work he does in reconstruction and repair before he can even apply the colour since all of those will affect the colour matching.

versus

Buy a couple of paints off the shelf.
Use a measuring spoon or pipette.

Your comparison is invalid and unreasonable.
>>
>>97277739
It really isn't once you're used to it. Especially with dropper bottles. If in doubt just use a syringe/pipette
>>
>>97286702
okay so you are genuinely retarded, good to know. a person can spend whatever amount of time and paint mixing shit till they get the right formula or they can buy the same color thats used on the box for like, 2 dollars more than normal. Seems like a pretty easy choice to me.
>>
>>97277498
Same. When I was a newbie I had mostly Citadel like a basic baby faggot.

Tried AP 2.0 and its great, a few bucks cheaper than Citadel too.
>>
>>97278308
The effectiveness of mixing paint depends on the purity of the pigment, and miniatures paints will turn to browngreymud faster than single pigment artists paints will when mixing multiple colors.

That's not the problem, the problem is once easily available AI programs that can bypass Captchas are distributed then ALL websites that rely on that kind of security are immediately incapable of dealing with botswarms. More robust, specific identification will be necessary regardless of where you are.

>Is Liren not in high school anymore?
He is still in high school, I had him at 17-18 years old, right at the end of school. He doesn't have perfect attendance and cares more about his part-time job at an antique store, he's smart/strange enough that exams are not a problem even if he doesn't follow the lessons.
>What was the arranged marriage originally for?
Liren comes from a shrine family with a lot of traditions, one of those was an aranged marriage, he was supposed to be married off to someone that could benefit the shrine. That could have been a pretty wide category of people, going from someone from another shrine family and as such with spiritual power and training, to more material reasons like just being rich or being the heir of an exceptional crafstsman. Liren being what he is never cared about it, and on his side there is no family left that would try to enforce it since they are all either dead or ran away, but the same could not be true for the other side and the engagement is still technically active sine nobody bothered to cancel it. Despite not being interested in the marriage part of it he would still want to investigate it because it's a "connection" and he's kinda obsessed with those.
Out of character it just looked like a more interesting version of childhood friend/moon's love to have a hook to something still in Kageoka, and felt fitting for his background. I was told it's not that fitting for the current cast, and looking at it I kinda aggree, there are not many good candidates for it, so the story arc wouldn't really work in that case. I wasn't baiting for a ship, it was probably gonna end in friendship rather than romance, unless somehow the other anon had different plans but I don't see how that could happen. I could try to make it work but it doesn't feel worth it, now that I look at it while I don't have a fever it clearly feels like romance bait and I don't feel like forcing it would make sense.

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms).

However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net.

This set, which is no where near finished includes
>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong
>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions
>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles
>some English/Welsh fairy tales
>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art).

I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward. Also all art is public domain.

I'm mainly posting here for feedback. Some will be art recommendations, flavor text (especially sourced) will be always welcomed.

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.
Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

If they genuinely wanted to discuss the game, they should probably post something other than obvious hollow ad copy in the op.
>>
>>97284096
I think it says a lot more about you and your play group than it does the game that you see abstract tag mechanics and think "obviously this is going to result in an argument."

It's just objectively bad design, sorry.

>>97276085
Ive had a lot of fun with it as a solo one on one game with my wife. We can take turns being the DM. I really enjoy its focus on narrative and allowance for creativity. We used to just do 5eslop for the past 4~ years but have really enjoyed finding LOTM.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

No it isn't. Hyperborea is basically the core of AD&D but without a nonsense Gygax initiative system.
>>
>>97286902
>>97286698 (me)
Hyperborea definitely shares the bones but it really is its own thing. I actually quite enjoy segmented combat, so it's something I'd likely houserule back into Hyperborea.
>>
>>97286902
NAYRT but IMO it makes perfect sense. You can agree that OSRIC is the most faithful AD&D retroclone and still think Hyperborea is the *better* AD&D retroclone. LotFP occupied a very similar niche relative to B/X pre-OSE: I don't think anybody would have argued it was more faithful than Labyrinth Lord. People just liked it better.
>>
>>97287008
I think that's a fair point. Though I guess you'd want to qualify what sort of retroclone it is as >>97286631did.
>>
>>97287008
Hyperborea is not a retroclone.

Is it normal for booster boxes to cost like fifty dollars?
>>
>>97287098
That depends. If it's the newest boxes and it has something meta-relevant, they'll typically go for ~$120. If it's something slightly older and not meta relevant, the price can be anywhere between $70 and $20 in LED9's case. It's all about demand + the knowledge that a lot of their cards are getting reprinted in tins.
>>
>>97285559
Sorry we have to kill all ritual decks because banning new cards may cause 0.001% loss of profit for company, better luck next time fucker.

>>
>>97287301
The pull rates are actually decent compared to whatever time you're remembering and reprints drag those prices down kicking and screaming every year. Only people it's really expensive for is people that want to participate in the current meta.

Historically, abbesses wielded real political power, controlled lands, and some could even mint coins or raise troops. You could expand this: make religious orders one of the few paths to education and political influence, creating a parallel power structure. The Church could require female representation in certain councils, or have traditions where certain theological or diplomatic roles are reserved for women.

Prolonged conflicts or crusade-equivalents could create precedents where women defend castles, lead forces, or serve as military commanders out of necessity - which then becomes normalized over time.

Different inheritance laws make a massive difference. Gavelkind (dividing inheritance among all children) versus primogeniture, or systems where daughters inherit in absence of sons. You could have regions with different legal traditions that create interesting dynamics when noble families intermarry.

The wound on his back ignited a surge of primal, animalistic rage within the Howler, causing him to completely ignore the strange voice in his head. He charged directly at the creature that had injured him, intent on chopping, ripping, and tearing it apart.

His underlings, though already weary, maintained their discipline and formed up to engage the approaching force of bizarre, humanoid beasts. These were no mere ragtag highwaymen, united only by common colors and a shared paymaster, like those they might have faced before. Moreover, no one knew how many ranged fighters those dogs of war still had hidden in the surrounding woods.

Don't forget that Howler is a werewolf because of his curse, so this might make him resist Skogs' attempts to control him.

If you could choose the set of core classes (in the PHB/core book and ideally the rest of the classes are designed around them) what would you choose?
They don't have to be identical to their current incarnations.

For me its,
>Ranger,
absorbs a lot of the fighter but keeps the independent survivalist schtick.
>Paladin,

What is the difference meaningfully between Monk 'wuxia' behaviour, fighter enhanced ability scores and rogue skills?
It's mostly the monk I'm, and what you mean by wargame abilities on the fighter, that I'm struggling to understand.

Lists of increasingly-wonky techniques on the Monk versus throwing big numbers into "default" rules until things get wonky on the Fighter versus using an actual skill subsystem that bundles functions into areas of proficiency that get wonky when you're That Good with the Rogue.

"Weaboo Fightan Magic" is an old pejorative for the Tome of Battle supplement for 3.5, back-porting a later-abandoned 4e prototype into a subsystem with classes substituting for the Fighter, Monk, and Paladin. It has stuff like covering your sword with a jet of flames for extra damage and reach at 3rd level, generally once per encounter due to the refresh mechanics but being 3.5 there are naturally shenanigans to loop.

>and what you mean by wargame abilities on the fighter
Before WotC got the IP, it was expected that higher-level characters eventually got positions of political power lording over increasing numbers of class-appropriate NPCs, which grounded the scope-creep of enemies surmounted in actual setting influence which in turn compensated for the proactive value of spellcasting by letting the Fighter send dudes to get things done in a number of places simultaneously because the casters became bosses of a lot less dudes. In the earliest versions, this directly cited the wargame preceding D&D called Chainmail for resolving combats with dozens to hundreds of participants.

I meant out of combat, sorry should have clarified.
I'm aware about the weaboo fightan magic but as it's written it looks like it'd have the usual awkwardness of the fighter and potentially also the monk sitting around whenever its not killing time while rogues and wizards solve everything, unless the GM gives the fighter a bone and he gets to punch a big rock.

I think every class should have a decent degree of application in and out of combat encounters. Overhauling the skill system a bit would help (Don't base skill ranks gained on INT). But also just giving every class some abilities related to non-combat action, just as tracking and survivalism to the Ranger/Fighter.

ToB on its own has teleportation, walking on air, and I think short-term invisibility. In the same Discipline, for some reason, which has a few things tied to a stealth skill. It's honestly a really good candidate for the whole setup just vibing as Fighter/Rogue with the seemingly-Wizard bits rectified by allowing those two their own Cool Shit in circumstances people actually play. Sure, people will TALK about Hulking Hurlers throwing osmium planetoids and using DC 100 skill checks for shit like a concert that brainwashes the crowd into will-gladly-die-for-you Fanatics, but actually using that long tail of 3.X in a session is AGONY because nothing lines up out there.

Inflating your ability score applies to all skills the ability affects and applying it to Strength lets you MOVE heavy objects for a variety of purposes.

>I think every class should have a decent degree of application in and out of combat encounters.
Given that the point of classes is boxing complementary party niches, I disagree with the idea that a given class should be a broadly-applicable thing. I'd much prefer just having a decent supply of class-independent build resources that actually let you be level-appropriately competent at a thing or two irrespective of your class, so that the tedious combinatorials this line of reasoning creates are emergent instead of hogging page-space.
