Do you think that class-based RPGs should try to accommodate the "generic wizard who does generic magical things" class concept, or do you think it is too generic an idea, and that the game should force the player to narrow it down?

Putting aside the very obvious example of D&D 5(.5)e and its wizard class, D&D 4e, Pathfinder 2e, and 13th Age 2e all have a wizard that specializes in a mix of raw damage blasting and hard-control debuffs (with the occasional buff). Daggerheart likewise has a wizard class. An indie title, level2janitor's Tactiquest, has the Arcanist as a catch-all magical caster with a broad repertoire of spells suitable for different occasions.

Other games have a different approach. Draw Steel has the elementalist, focused on the physicality of elemental magic; and the talent, a psionicist who specializes in more intangible effects like time manipulation and telepathy. Tom Abbadon's ICON has no "generic wizard who does generic magical things" in its noncombat classes or its combat classes, specifically to force the player to narrow the concept down, whether for noncombat functions or for tactical combat role.

Why did they get so steamed about the whole thing, fighting slavery is like 80% of the plot hooks in a fantasy game. There were entire prestige classes and campaigns built around that.
I mean like if the bad guys don't do slavery and aren't racist / homophobic, what do they do that's actually bad

So Pentex is trying to build shit but the Woofs keep killing as many people as they can get away with, potentially with the New Impergium becoming a nationwide policy.

The Progenitors are also involved with preservation efforts, so they might benefit from the existing biology for their projects. The Syndicate is trying to see how to make some money from the place without pissing off the Progenitors too much or giving the Dream Speakers leverage with what little tourism there is, presuming that the Indians still have mages among them.

Basically. Pentex has like, 1000+ military personel and a bunch more workers and researchers there.

And if it is say, before Chaos Factor, Samuel Haight is there. In pursuit of a legendary Mage and a legendary realm.
If it is in modern times, Progenitors and Iteration X started to clean up the place.

I'm gonna be honest.
It is kind of boring because there is no 'chaotic' nature of having multiple players present.
It sometimes feels like the DM is trying to please me a bit.

We are still looking for at least a second player.

The FFG system is great though. I'm not gonna lie. I gotta pirate photoshop and make a printable sticker set for blank dice when the FFG Star Wars goes out of print. Unless they've already been made.

I forgot to mention:

BPB = Base Psionic Bonus. I took a lot of inspiration from the Trailblazer 3rd party book with their unification of the Magic using classes and assigned each class with a Base Psionic Bonus to address a similar disconnect between Psionic Classes and Non-Psionic Classes. Basically, BPB is (Effective) Manifester Level and vice versa.

>killing things is not the sole effect of Negative Energy

>Given the carveout for Slaad and Tirbana reproduction
But it's not about reproduction. A mindless zombie cannot reproduce nor can it comprehend the world, yet it is still invariably evil and seeks out things to kill things for no benefit to itself, with no self conservation, unless commanded.

>But what if they didn't have an evil god ASMRing in their minds? What if dwaves stopped having a Good good whispering in theirs? What if that Good god was whispering in the minds of orcs?
This experiment has actually been run in both the Ravenloft and Dark Sun settings. The answer? The vast majority of people end up evil as shit instead of just some of them.
I don't know why the evil gods even bother. They can just sit back an let the entropy of the universe do all the work grinding down morality and spend more of their time gaming.
>>

To repeat myself, because apparently your brain is stuck in the retardation of the handful of writers who decided to make Undead Evil because ick:

>like False Life?

>But it's not about reproduction.
It establishes that killing literally everyone in a settlement for continued existence is not Evil.

>A mindless zombie ... is still invariably evil
And Ghosts, Ghost Brutes, Necropolitans, and Spectral Savants are not. Again, your brain appears to be stuck in the retardation of a handful of writers who decided to make Undead Evil because ick, who pointedly were not the sole opinion to make it into the text describing the matters.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

>How do I make sure the players have a chance of navigating the map when it is mostly woods
By using the standard travel rules and chances of getting lost. What system are you using? If you want to cut down on them getting lost you can let them hire NPC guides or give them some FOE navigation skill. Or just let them have map of the general area
>how do I make my map interesting apart from the odd mountains, swamps and hills scattered around?
Assuming by "interesting" you mean varied--odd mountains, swamps, hills (and glades, lakes, waterfalls, dead forests, etc.) should honestly be enough. But if not you can always add in more variation by having "dense" and "light" woodland.

One of the world-shaping events of my setting is an incredibly advanced pre-human civilization creating a machine that had to destroy all their enemies, on a metaphysical level.
This led to a last-ditch attack before it could be completed. In current version, the attack is performed by combined might of Angels and Demons, despite the whole setting revolving around the clash of Light and Dark.
I can't put a finger on it - would presenting a threat that made Angels and Demons work together, even if briefly, actually make for a cool moment in lore, or it would undermine the central conflict?
>>
>>96743297
I have a setting with periodic cataclysms on a smaller time scale (basically the same as what you suggested initially, like a thousand years or less) so I can say what I've done at least.
I think it's a good way to make a setting dynamic and interesting.
>It feels stupid to fit multiple such cataclysms into a timeline measured in thousands of years. If a cataclysms destroys everything...
It doesn't have to destroy everything. Mine are usually strong enough to basically reset civilization back to a baseline, but it doesn't erase all the knowledge hoarded before the apocalypse. If any pockets survive, they pretty rapidly are able to resettle and it can mean a civilization/society in a bad spot at the end of an era that manages to survive all of a sudden ends up in a dominant position. Seers and prophets can also potentially foresee the disaster and prepare for it, making the position even more secure.
>why care about the struggle of good and evil if the slate will be wiped clean
The obvious answer would be to make the 'evil' responsible for the cataclysms, but either way focus on the continuity between eras too
>Not to mention forests and animal populations which just wouldn't have time to spread again.
Unless you're talking about something on the order of the dinosaur-killing asteroid, you'd be surprised. Some study said that life had returned to the literal Chicxulub crater within three years after impact. And that was just on an entirely different scale in terms of how destructive the event was. Treat the first couple hundreds years after the Cataclysm as a "recovery" phase, like forests are growing back, new animals are recolonizing the lands. It can be an interesting period to play around with as well for a setting.
>Plus for long-lived races, such as Dwarves and Elves, this would be stupid.
I personally cut the lifespans of my dwarves and elves, but I think playing with the idea of the "proud race perseveres through the cataclysm" is cool too.

Also to extend my reply a bit, I feel like fantasy doesn't really treat a thousand years as the massive amount of time it really is.
1000 BC was just after the bronze age collapse - a thousand years later Augustus was ruling the Roman Empire. A thousand years after that and William the Conqueror was invading England at the dawn of the High Middle Ages.
A thousand years ago for a premodern society is basically into the realm of legend or myth already.
A cataclysm every thousand years? Well shit, that means there would have only been 4 cataclysms since the Pyramids of Giza were built - which are constructs so ancient even the Ancient Greeks considered them to be basically straight out of the age of myth.

Is this the thread to discuss VTTs and map-making tools? I'm looking at RPTools' MapTool, free and open-source, not sure if anyone got any feedback. I want to playtest an rpg with my cousin and we live in 2 different cities so need VTT until we meet up again. Needs to support hex grids cause muh GURPS.

Those are fair points. Thank you. I think I'll compress the timeline to a more manageable level. 100k years since creation of the world, with most humanoids emerging just 10k years ago
