Gearhead thread but for /tg/

Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.

I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.

I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.

I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.

Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?

this is how i usually play. just note the character sheet info in a notebook and then proceed with notes and stuff splitting things between sessions.
It makes it easier for me since i dont have to find somewhere to print them.
I do this with fairly lightweight systems though

No because I'm a forever DM. But I do have journals that are my campaigns with all my notes and adventures and maps in them. To an extent, at least. I mean they're not organized for butts and I just refill my notebook here >>97823612 with a new Triopmhe pad whenever it fills up. So one page might be a D&D adventure, the next one notes from the weekend ancient history college classes I take online for fun, and then the page after that is a workflow for how we're going to provide blood pressure cuffs to eighty year-olds in Alabama. So they're not the neatest journals in the world and basically impossible for anyone but me to follow. But I do have one notebook of spiralbound 3x5 cards that I've been doodling a fun little campaign and adventure set intended for Labyrinth Lord (D&D basic retclone) that's actually organized.

It's only the army book that made brets what they are instead of a lazy historical port but sure
>>
>>97830218
Woah woah relax with the anti bretonnian sentiment. Though you bring up a good point, in fantasy/TOW there isn’t really a need for sigmarines because grail knights already fulfill that roll. They are essentially space marines but medieval knights (black Templars ig lol), so SCEs are kinda redundant. Though I’d argue that the status of grail knights in combination with 5e lore or how bretonnia from the village level up is a nation of heroes and wanna be heroes constantly questing to become knights, really does make bretonnia pretty unique in the setting so uh you’re wrong
>>
>>97830517
If you don’t like Bretonnia as a faction idk what I can say to help you.

Welcome to /2eg/, a thread dedicated to all things 2nd Edition D&D related - including settings, lore, modules, and derived systems (Alternity, Buck Rogers XXVc, For Gold and Glory, Hackmaster, Myth and Magic, and more).

Since 2e draws heavily from earlier editions, older modules are welcome too. Other media derived from AD&D (such as Infinity Engine video games) also has a home here.

It's what you play, not how you play it. RAW or homebrew, as long as your table is having fun, there's no wrong way to play.

There's a surprisingly complete 2e fan wiki for rules stuff, it's excellent for quick reference:

Yeah but this applies to pretty much any caster or light armor class in the game

You know you supposed to use ALL your available options as a Kineticist. And if something has all of that at once, the problem is the monster, not you.

>>
>>97830736
Obviously this talks about the 5e version, my 4e knowledge is unfortunately quite limited. But I wouldn't think there are that many people like your friend, who have memories mainly about the previous variants and think it was 2e needs or should have. There's so many 5eWarlock fans because the fantasy of "Unholy Powers At A Dirt Cheap Price" meshes well with the absolute glutted hog that is the Warlock chassis.

As shown, if it was just the fantasy or specific mechanics people like, they have options. But none hits *everything at once* like 5e Warlock does.

Setting is the only thing that makes sense for GW to do. They can't really do a narrative, because a narrative might require killing off characters every so often, and that would mean people won't buy the model of that character if they get discontinued or the rules become unavailable in future editions.

There's plenty of room for narratives within 40k, but it shouldn't itself be a larger narrative. If there has to be a larger narrative, the best way to do so is to frame everything as conflicting rumors and reports in order to maintain some of the mystery.
>>
It's a setting that GW sets stories in, just like EVERY OTHER SETTING IN EXISTENCE
>>
The galaxy is a setting that we read a buch of stories in. The setting itself is an excuse to tell stories, like the kill team planet that has the big gun, or a plot-relevant space hulk.

you could say in the past people only knew the setting i.e they had no idea why books for fenris would be released, but now more people than ever are focused on the ongoing larger picture narrative

I usually just start with a single dumb idea and then expand on it. Like for my current game, I wanted to do a fairy tale storybook adventure. So right away, I decided all the sentient beings are talking cartoon animal people. Then I was like, what if all terrain, plants, and animals were made of candy / desserts? The rest of it pretty much wrote itself from there
>>
>>97822264
No time. Prep is noob trap.
>>
Been playing one shots lately, because of schedules conflicting and because I like trying new systems out to find the good ones to base a campaign around.
I tried several methods.

An Only War campaign that was mainly a series of combat encounters linked by a war movie plot that was just the ongoing conflict. One small starting operation against insurgents and then a longer conflict with Orks, that got sidelined after we couldn't manage to get together to play anymore. It's always there ready to continue if we want. Prep wasn't that deep, after I put together a few operation maps to give context during mission briefings. I probably spent more time cropping enemy stat profiles in a nice little sheet I could print out than getting sessions together.

L5R was the next big thing. I put together the basic premise, named a bunch of NPCs and gave them personality, ambitions and all that stuff, most of them aren't even statted beyond "generic+1" . I put together a small conspiracy plot in case the PCs needed a nudge, but they soon went in another direction and I rolled with that. Prep work gave me all I needed, I just had to come up with the details. I had another subplot ready just in case, and it's turning out to be the main plot in the current second campaign arc that we just started.

Between L5R arcs I GMd a cyberpunk 2020 campaign. It was supposed to be a sort of open table limited to our group but it soon became a regular campaign after a few players became unavailable. City map was done with google maps, a few factions with objectives and again a bunch of NPCs. We did keep the option to have the players change PCs between sessions, turned out pretty useful in some cases, like when the party had to interact with a zeppelin hijack from three different locations.

Next thing I'm going to prep is Exalted, still have to think how to tackle that because I want to study the system first and boy, is there a lot to read. Then maybe a classic fantasy using GURPS.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>Eliminate all ambiguities.
There are none, save those trying to force them in with overwrought philosophical naval gazing.
Nothing in the lore suggests anything resembling ambiguity; what you actually have is the hidden truth that the Faithful are all, in their own ways, contradicting Scripture, but it is presented as tragic necessity, not moral ambiguity.
