Is it a good advice for game masters who want to run campaign in the "exotic" place instead of generic "coast of swords" clone?
Savages exist to be exploited by their betters.
>>97284794>what kind of adventures can you haveWhat kind of retarded mother-may-I bullshit is this?
I WILL have sex with the fantasy savage tribal women
>>97270237What are the consequences if I reject this advice and play it like some racist 1930s Sword and Sorcery yarn straight out of Conan? Would I get cancelled from the Pathfinder community? Would I get a cease and desist from Paizo? Would I get banned on Bluesky?
>>97270429>>97284794>>97282969>>97285991Just face the facts that Paizo doesn't want your chud-asses playing their games. If you want to play racist colonizers then go play some stupid and lame OSR game with the rest of the grognards. Welcome to the dustbin of history, motherfucker.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs! Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? >>97283686>what is the most streamlined way to prepare a hexmap for my group of Pathfinder players to get a few sessions of play out ofAnon gave you a great answer, but as an alternative suggestion, consider not prepping your own map at all and using one of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps. They're a little bit harder to read than the colorful Basic-style maps, but the playability is unmatched, and if you want to expand the area of play there are lots more maps ready to hand. You can just plonk your dungeon down in any hex that seems reasonable. Alternatively there are also various remakes of the original Outdoor Survival map that was recommended for use in the original D&D box set from 1974; pic related is one. I hope you enjoy it, Anon!>>97284203Yeah, I'm pretty sure he made them as supplementary material for an ASE game he was running. It looks like all his stuff for it is on the All Dead Generations blog now, together with some of his embarrassing political rambling.>>97284550>How is labyrinth lord? It's B/X, so it's good. Personally I like the way he implemented addon AD&D material (in the Advanced Edition Companion) better than the way Norman did it for OSE, but that's a matter of taste.
>>97283686>>97283851Welcome, friend. You seem to have a good measure of "the spirit of the game" and I'm sure you'll have a great campaign going forward. Others gave you fantastic advice. GFC is an absolute treasure as is Melan (the Beyond Fomalhaut fellow linked above). I'd also recommend Prince of Nothing's Age of Dusk blog, though he primarily does module reviews. His musings are good stuff, though, and his No Artpunk module contest collections are rock solid. I would also urge you to poke around old articles from magazines like Fight On! and Dragon. Lots of stuff to shamelessly steal for your games in there. As someone who converted his group from PF and 5E to AD&D, I feel it's crucial to set the hook early. I don't mean in a storygame way, mind you, but give them something they want to get done. A solid dungeon that they can't reasonably finish in a handful of sessions, but with the promise of more treasure if they push on. Something like that. Obviously you have a better measure of your players than we do, but if you are enjoying the OSR style then you'll have to convince your group, through gameplay, that it should be your primary game after the first few sessions. You could run one of the established classics like Keep on the Borderlands or what have you. Or you could mess around with Appendix A from the DMG and roll your own dungeon. If you go that route, I recommend being a bit malleable with some of the interpretations of the results. It's a great way to start getting a dungeon hammered out, but don't be beholden to what it creates. Use the results for inspiration and guidance, but get creative with it! GFC has a great video regarding traps that shows a great method for making your own.
>>97285258(Cont.)As far as making a setting goes, I recommend not fleshing out everything before you start. Give yourself an aesthetic you're aiming for (mine is "somewhere between Tolkien and Conan by way of Frazetta"), decide what sort of biome you want to start the players in (frozen north, deep woods, coastal region etc.) and hammer out the rough shape. At least one major city if appropriate, maybe some hamlets and villages, key landmarks. Then establish some basic stuff regarding political things like rulership and antagonizing forces. I feel that things move much more smoothly if you just let things develop organically though you may prefer a more rigid method. Beyond that, just go for it! Sit down and start putting stuff to paper. I'm sure you'll have something great shaping up before you know it.Also, I second Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The booklet can be a bit difficult to parse but it's fantastic for stocking hexmaps.>>97284550I really like LL. I would like to pick up a copy but don't really have the need at the moment as I don't play B/X. I may pick up 2E when the physical book releases.
>>97283513If you don't know how to compile c++ code then maybe you shouldn't be in the hobby. Also, hello!
>>97285291>2e labyrinth lord.I didn't even know this was coming out. I thought the main creator retired from making stuff. Looksl ike he is moving away from b/x and ogl in general for 2e.
I am looking for a game that is a mix between HeroQuest and Battletech. In that it is a duel type game rather than a dungeon crawler, movement is hex based, there are items and objects you can pick up and interact with, and there are fixed action points per character deployed, and each action a character takes costs action points. Is there anything you would personally recommend that sounds like this, or do I have to homebrew such a system myself?
Is Age of Sigmar good yet?
Today I will remind them

Let's say your party plays as human colonists on another world. Everything outside your settlement is hostile and wants to kill you, including the indigenous population of humanoid aliens. But there's also potential to win great wealth by discovering new resources to be exploited. What would you do in such a setting? What system would you use to run such a game?

Why do "modern" and modern people go insane when they see some eldritch blorblo, but Conan could just kill it without going "aaaaaahhh save me niggerman!!!!!"
>>97281870because people in the old times actually believed in the stories about monsters and demons so when they inevitably appear they weren't taken aback by the existence of such creatures.meanwhile, us modern folk have been brought up with the notion that science and logic disallows the supernatural. As a result, when the supernatural happens our very worldview shatters to pieces along with our sanity.
>>97285715People legitimately don't get Lovecraft. It isn't being afraid of a fish or that you don't matter, it's the fear of finding out you're on a ticking time bomb, you don't know how long's left on the timer, and you cannot get away, ever.
Insanity in Lovecraft stories is usually more like ptsd hopelessness, paranoia or overwhelming dread, not becoming a babbling schizo like the people who "adapt" his works without reading them seem to think.
>>97285835thats not scary
>>97285835Lovecraft was a product of his time: the things he considered sanity-bending only work if society isn't demoralized to the point of apathy.

>>97285674First off, happy birthday. Hell of a date. I'm years off from turning 40, but it's nearer than I want to admit.>The real issue is finding time. That's the biggest game killer of all, making schedules and locations line up perfectly so game jams can commence. I pine for the days of having a whole weekend just for gaming, but with how busy things can get, especially during the holidays, it's easy to have that game jam get pushed back months at a time. What's important is keeping at it, and not letting the dust settle so hard it just kills your drive to try new things.
>>97285733>First off, happy birthday. Hell of a date.Thank you. And yeah, the date certainly made for some interesting birthday parties in my youth. It's definitely a challenge sometimes to get together, but if we plan well enough in advance it usually works. We just have to put in a bit of effort and enjoy it when the opportunities arise. It's nice that we have the internet to connect us, but nothing beats getting together in person, even when it's not as often as we'd like.
