>>97837616Gestalt doesn't help the turn economy though, you can still only do so much per turn even if you have more options.
>>97842458Off topic but gestalt looks so fun. There's so much potential for synergies you wouldn't be able to do otherwise.Plus, being able to take stupid options for fun and flavor without necessarily gimping yourself.A game where you are limited in what you can take on each side of the gestalt, or where one side has ro follow a certain theme, etc, sounds endlesly fun too.
>>97842758There's some systems like ICON that play more in that vein, having each character pick a combat and non-combat class so that you don't have to feel as hemmed in between picking flavor and utility vs. raw efficacy. I haven't even done a gestalt campaign but from the one-shots I've done it's a fun sort of maximalism.
>>97842773I might suggest something like that to my DM if he ever gets bored of our current campaign.Which might take another 20 years to happen, but you know.
>>97842758Gestalt is the most fun i have ever had with 3.5. We didn't try any shenanigans to break the game though. I made a rogue-fighter/barbarian/swordsage with the rooftop drop acf and got to practically make the budget dnd version of ezzio from ACMy old gm experimented with gestalt quite a lot actually. At one point he gave everybody a gestalt class but only an npc one like the Expert or the Aristocrat based on your backstory, with the exception that skill points were additive so characters had a ton more skills and skill points and that your level 1 gains were additive, so you got both HD at level 1 so you were beefier at the start of the game or you also got both the saves bonuses etc.It worked fine imo but this wasnt a powergamers table, just a casuals one that wanted to play some dnd without optimizing. I think this all started because one player wanted vehemently to have the part that he was a noble have a mechanical effect on his character and the dm conceded and them we all got in on the action
Why did domain level play fall out of style?
>>97842401Nice. Reminds me that I have to finish painting my Toulmore squads....

>>97840608As I understand it it's unclear whether Birthright or Spelljammer was their biggest flop of all time but both are basically the poster children for the setting bloat that contributed to the demise of TSR. They're very different settings of course, one flopped due to being quirk chungus that nobody asked for and the other was medieval fantasy yet again ("but we swear we have a unique hook! It's 10% different!"), but they both bombed.

>>97822550If you prepare big stuff like factions or big mover and shaker characters with clear goals, and also prepare a lot of "adventure sites" (dungeons, bases, things like that) then the improv will flow a lot better.
>>97823521Prep starts being relevant when you know for sure where the party is going next session. If there's a dungeon they want to go in, it makes sense to prep that dungeon in more detail.
workin on one
Over the course of 15 years, I have made 12 long dnd/pathfinder campaigns and several short savage worlds campaigns. 8 of those campaigns were in the last 6 years. I have met a wide array of people, some stranger than others. I'm mostly retired now.>>97823521In my experience, the highest point and the lowest lows happened when I had no prep. It's a double edged sword, since my players remember the good times but also bring up the stinkers. After a while I started to prep a lot and began preferring it over not prepping, but whenever I got lazy and winged it, it inevitably led to "absolute cinema" as the kids say, but also repeating the same mistakes.
Whatever you may think of the idea of martial characters in D&D or any other fantasy rpg basically doing sword magic, it is at least a lot more fun from a gameplay perspective than just going "I make an attack roll" every round.
>>97840158Ok?

Hey /tg/ I have a problem. One of my players is a genuine incel. He's 27 and I'm pretty sure he's never had sex. He definitely hasn't gotten laid in a while. He's not really ugly just kinda weird and awkward. I feel bad for him. But he is taking his extreme thirst out in the game. >every time his character, a human eldritch knight, comes back from our adventures he always tries to play up the angle of "we saved the town, where are the girls to suck my dick as thanks?">he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair) >you can just tell how excited he is talking about how there should be a dozen villages between these two cities on the map, like he is stopping just short of talking about how many nubile virgin farm girls are there for his fighter to fuckWe tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something. Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch. So....any advice? Its not worth ruining the game over by kicking him, and nothing is so blatant to be a clear social violation, but the dude is just oozing incel energy and I feel like I should subtly suggest to the DM something that will set his head on straight, and possibly help cure his mindset. Any ideas?
>>97835613Bro, just throw a succubus at him. Seriously that’s what they’re there for. If he’s a good sport about it you’ll know he’s not an actual sperg, or just awkward. Don’t let this board gaslight you into thinking awkward is some kind of indelible and horrendous character flaw btw.
>>97841917It is, because then there's nothing special about scoring with them.
>>97842237Good idea I'll suggest that to the DM.
>>97842237Better yet.Give him a succubus waifu. No strings attached, just 'You redeem a succubus, but if you ever betray that purity of love she'll 100% go back to gargling cocks and talking shit about you on facebook.'There, watch him go from all the bitches to one bitch who occasionally pops up and gives sidequests.

I can play heavy games for a whole day, but if we hadn't gotten agricola to the table yesterday I think I'd have needed a break. No idea why that is, you'd think it shouls be the other way round
>>97842359Concise and straight to the point. Thanks anon, sounds very cool, I'll get it after checking the rules.
>>97842802Longer games tend to have more downtime. There are diminishing returns on the gameplay.
Trailer Park Wars was a hoot. Not very gamey but it was kinda fun. The rules need some clarification though. Nice light board game that lasts about an hour. Played at 4 ppl, can handle 6. I imagine 6 would be more fun and quite a bit more hectic. It's a very chaotic game. Keeping up with the boardstate is kinda challenging as just one tenent can change quite a bit.
>Hey guys check out my SORLOCKADIN!So how come DND during 2000s-2010s was all about roleplaying but now it's all SORLOCKADIN this and SORLOCKADIN that?
>>97831241I always said I'd never ban non-infinite-combo shit as a DM but silvery barbs broke me. I played in a game where two players had it and as a result no monster ever got to fail a save ever. The only way to really deal with it was massed mooks rushing them in melee, cause when you're fighting 25 orcs forcing a couple rerolls a round isn't gonna help much.
>>97833303That's called a skald and that's based.
>>97820713You're on a board entirely for pretend dice games so get over it.>>97807937Your post unintentionally shows why multiclassing needs to be removed. No one has this problem in B/X D&D. It is literally the most balanced edition of D&D to exist. Even 4e had the possibility of rolling infinite attacks per turn with badly thought out rogue or ranger abilities.
>I do the powerful reddit thing!>"no you don't"holy fuck the DM just balanced teh SHIT out of the game
>>97839221Dunno if you're being sarcastic but multiclassing in 5e is reddit and creating portmanteau for specific multiclass combos is extremely reddit.
Hi,I am only now playing Amnesia: The Bunker and I am amazed just how much in apperance and lore the Monster from game resembles Flesh Eater Courts. The Monster from game is actually a type of ghoul per lore. The Monster was once Augustin Lambert, who had been transformed into a powerful Ghoul like creature due to the drinking water tainted by a otherworldly substance called Vitae ( this reminded me of Kingsblood "wine"). It is a cannibal monstrosity that stalks the tunnels of game, reminded me of how, for example, a Varghulf would act in closed spaces. It makes its home and sleeps in the Chapel, decorated with gruesome half devoured corpses. The design of Monster eyes and those immense fangs that make its toothy maw for some strange reason deeply reminds me of Blisterskin court art. In the Blisterskin court art, the ghoul has a semi dreamy/melancholy eyes filled with pure tragedy. Such a powerful imagery.
Good catch, OP.I remember when I first played Amnesia the Bunker, the vibes, the lore and the apperance and behaviour of the monster scream glorius ghouls from AoS.Check Amnesia the Rebirth. Plently of ghouls there too.
Also, the Chapel is basically a nest for the ghoul in Amnesia. The ghoul is a cannibal and has dragged corpses there to eat.Yet some corpses have been decorated with razor wire and left as ornament for its nest. That screams Flesh Eater Courts. Picture of chapel.

>>97842474The only classes that can really get away with just one stat are Artificer, Cleric, Fighter, Paladin, and Rogue. Anyone else needs a modicum of Dexterity for AC.Paladin might seem like an odd inclusion there, but even if you roll 15 Cha and everything else is 10 or less, you can spend your Background to get True Strike via Magic Initiate in the 2024 rules. If you're still in 2014, Paladin is still the best use of those scores, but involves taking the Blessed Warrior fighting style so you can just get an attacking cantrip and being a worse Cleric.Classes like Wizard or Sorcerer are the ones that suffer the most because unless you roll exactly a high Dex alongside a decent casting stat, you just won't have the AC to actually survive.
>>97841988>3d6 worked becauseCharacter creation was simpler and characters were seen as more disposable. The principal difference between the design of 5e and the design of TSR editions isn’t the size of the numbers, it’s the length of the character sheet.

Gotta q for you guys. I'm transferring my long term game to an online format to collate it better for my players. There's a lot of content here and I'm using Reddit for the base but I just don't like it's format. Is there anything better for a database? I just want to know where to look before I truly get started because this is a lot of information. I only want to do this once. Thanks for any advice
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! I've been thinking; Is martial arts really "OP", or do people simply ignore Autofire/Heavy weapons too much? The point of the X2 skills is that they do dominate over regular combat skills, that's why they cost more XP.
