It's interesting that half of them think they are competent their stage acting stuff (which is not RP), but can't hide their anger/pouting when they still get an unplanned bad result despite cheating. O'Brien goes full seethe, even interrupting next turns if he doesn't get his success scene every time. Can't imagine trying to work with these control freaks, much less consider them friends.

In all seriousness, how can you get yourself to enjoy playing games when /tg/ players are so insufferable, socially and aesthetically in real life
>try to play 40k
>it's all actual obese autists with animes T shirts and don't understand the concept of an inside voice
>try to play RPGs
>It's fat 40 year olds with goatee or ungroomed beard and shaved head, marvel T shirt and jorts and wearing those weird flat Irish hats
>visit LGS on card gaming night
>take one whiff and immediately turn around and leave

It's actually distressing because I want to actually get to play in the hobby I love so much, but it doesn't seem to be possible if you can't find normal people to play with

Oh, I don't have a problem telling people I play tabletop because I curate who I play with to avoid people who are socially inept. But you'll never catch me playing at a game store, because, like OP said,

I've never heard of this """"adage""""" before, but tbqh it tracks with the posters ITT that reckon it's not worth the OP ever sharing his interests with anyone. Spending too much time with themselves.

I've played wargames with a bunch of white collar professionals, tradies, amateur sports players, outdoor hobbyists. These hobbies aren't anywhere near as obscure or outsider as fags here cope by pretending they are.

Sorry if this is an old question but I'm trying to throw something together for a 1-shot on short order.

If one takes a Strixhaven Background, are they prohibited from taking the Strixhaven Initiate feat via normal feat gains or is it legal to be an over-achieving student and essentially take it twice for a couple extra cantrips and one more daily spell?
>>
>>97272904
Unlike something like Elemental Adept, nothing in the feat says you can take it multiple times.
However, Magic Initiate is there as another feat that basically does the same thing anyway. Also feats like Artificer Initiate, Fey Touched, Shadow Touched, and so on. Plenty of feats to grant bonus spells without needing to take Strixhaven Initiate specifically.

Im out of my depth here

TL;DR Im trying to learn how to run a setting I have no experience with. Looking for setting influence.

-

I would like some help with this concept, post apocalyptic science fantasy. The idea that the world was propelled forward by magic tremendously, but then cataclysmic events reset civilization, and now were living in the post era.

Im used to running Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Lancer, but this new group has requested me to run fantasy for them.

I agreed, but I told them I wanted to draw from influences that im familiar with, the closest comparison I can think of is the Televison Show Adventure Time where there was technology and then a fall, and now we have magic and some science tech. Disparate cities and no main governing body.

-

So, im looking to add to my influence, are there any pre existing settings ? Are there any fun things you've ever wanted to do along these lines ?

>The best Science Fantasy author of all time is Roger Zelazny
I suppose you might be right, were you to ignore all the better ones like Wells, Verne, Clarke, Bester, Asimov, Smith, Dick, Herbert, Campbell, Lem, Silverberg, Pohl, Banks, Ellison, Farmer, Ballard, Heinlein, Straczynski, Delaney, Sturgeon,...
The only way one trick pony Zelazny is at the head of the list is if you put it reverse alphabetical order.

That's a big part of what makes it interesting.
>>
I really really like this type of setting. I have my own and it sucks, it's kinda painful when you care a lot about something and that care sets impossible standards that conflict with each other.

I think the gold standard now, or at least a couple years ago, was Ultraviolet Grasslands. The wackiness was controlled by a straightforward structure of point crawl merchants, you can then stop at some dungeon or something but the book orders itself with that concept.
I've tried running it and I'm convinced only the author can actually run that thing, but it's still pretty cool.
>>
If you like the Thundarr/Kamandi vibe check out Umerica. It's the US after some kind of catastrophe destroyed everything and gave us magic. It's pretty silly dumb with its references, like Disney has turned into an aztek style dead cult to the big headed gods they found there or Fort Knox is the only place that takes dollars because they think they have to keep them like pieces of art. It's dumb fun, but it has tables and mechanics for cars and tongue in cheek treassure that might help you if you want that tone.

>>97263915
If you want something like Nausicaa, Cloud Empress is pretty heavily inspired. It's more of a post-post apocalipse, a lot of the land is sustained in a very exploitative balance between nobles with old tech and villagers that farm most of the year and run from giant bugs during summer. But you can travel into the ruins of the old world and it's very clearly a futuristic scifi abandoned city.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Very goated /osrg/ thread, bx newfag here coming back after a long break of 3 months and just having played session 20 with my group. But that's a story to share for another time. I came with another question and as Gygax willed it, the tq is quite related:
How do you guys track all the player run businesses and NPCs they enconter over the course of the campaign in a convenient and efficient way?
Special retard question: would you allow your players to have them or their retainers use their round to "forcefeed" another player a health potion?
And in a more serious way: how do you let players control/influence the actions of their retainers?

If the feedee is unconscious, yes. If he is up and fighting, lol no.

>And in a more serious way: how do you let players control/influence the actions of their retainers?
With loyalty checks. I've recently discovered the tables for obeying orders from WRG and they're based, I might start using them some day. Basically roll high = charge in, roll low = run away, and roll average = obey orders. Picrel.

One of my players is a full on woman hater and one is just autistic enough to disregard women so that's half the group excluded from any kind of romance stuff. Once in a game that ended up dying I think two sessions in, I tried to offer a prostitute grateful for being freed from slavery just as a contact for the latter's character, and he still refused. The rest of my players are coomers who shouldn't do in game romance for their own good

What is the correct way to handle female priestess? Historically women weren't part of the clergy, so you don't have a lot of references to drawn from in regards to their attitude.

Because these women didn't choose the life, they didn't always act like traditional nuns. In many cases, these noblewomen turned convents into high-society hubs. In places like Venice, the parlatorio was the heart of social life. Because it was technically a "liminal space" between the cloister and the world, nuns could speak with visitors through a grate. These spaces hosted lavish parties where nuns served expensive sweets and performed cutting-edge music. They became some of the era's most prolific composers (like Isabella Leonarda) and writers (like Arcangela Tarabotti, who wrote scathing critiques of forced monachization).

Wealthy nuns often brought their own servants, ate fine foods, and wore silk versions of their habits. In cities like Venice, some convents became famous for hosting parties, musical performances, and intellectual salons where noblemen would visit the "parlor" to flirt and gossip. Many of these women were highly educated and used the convent as a space to write, compose music, or exert political influence that they wouldn't have had as wives.

Because these women were noble, they often held the power in the convent. If the Abbess was from a powerful family, even the local Bishop often struggled to keep the "naughty" behavior in check. Convents were often major landowners. If the Church pushed too hard, the noble families would withhold the "spiritual dowries" that kept the institution running.

>>97267317
There's an even simpler explanation sometimes. If a woman is sent to the convent and locked up there, she's removed from the line of inheritance. So now the next person in the line doesn't have to worry about her marrying and everything going to her husband.
>>
If you can't think of a single female priesthood off the top of your head, and can't imagine how one might work, then you are probably too stupid to rpgs.

Him strikes me as Unknown Armies movie.
Like, the central conflict seems to involve what basically an Avatar, maybe even a Godwalker.
>>
I’m working on a horror scenario, care to help out with suggestions?

The Premise: the player characters are all "test subjects" (probably former military, ex-cops, criminals, lone drifters and such) that were kidnapped or otherwise imprisoned by a sinister conspiracy of unknown nature or goals. They participate in "experiments" to "stress test" the conspiracy's "projects." Present day real world setting, on the surface.

Any ideas for monsters, unnatural tech, twists, set pieces, testing grounds and scares?

>>97270325
Never looked too much into Unknown Armies but it looks like a good vehicle for adapting certain stories. Definitely something to look into more.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, vanilla IS together with Fidai are two of the worst warbands from a power perspective. So you're going to struggle against pretty everything unless your opponents are leaning heavily into vibes/rule of cool with their warbands. Even then those types of units in HL/Prussians are likely to outperform most of your stuff anyway.

In ideal circumstances, your sniper is ignoring armour about 1/3rd of the time. This is wildly unreliable. Remember, New Antioch is a CQC faction, so the bulk of your faction's damage is going to be done in a 1-2 round period - if you need AP, then a 1 in 3 chance of ignoring armour is just not available enough.

Instead, you should give the sniper priest an auto rifle or SMG so they can stack blood reliably and kill soft targets quickly. Or you do the based thing and give the priest either 2 pistols and grenades or an autopistol and a pistol, which lets your priest be one of New Antioch's best melee units (since pistols act as clubs that use ranged +dice).

Sniper rifles are for models with middling shooting stats. Going from +4d to +5d on a sniper priest is a joke. Going from +0d to +1d and getting double the short range bracket on a rifle Yeoman is legitimately good.

I know they are at the bottom, found that out when I got btfo'd the first campaign by game 8 out of 11.
My primary issue was that I didn't have enough gunz and modelz to force injuries early on when a jezzail with alch. ammo was at peak performance. I lost the first 2 games badly; in one, both my bull and alchemist were OoA before even INJURING an enemy model. By then, I was so far behind, and other armies so far ahead, that catch up was improbable, and I was forced to use lions and absurd weight of fire to win objectives and force draws. I haven't gotten so fucked over since... well, it's been a long time since I felt genuinely hapless.
My new plan is to maximize my weight of fire advantage early while planning for later acquisitions. I am hoping for 2-3 glorious curbstomps to accrue ducats/glory to hopefully stay one step ahead of the others, and when they do catch up, break even by dint of early success.

Funny thing is the best way to play IS is to build tall with House of Wisdom, take your lumps with a mediocre early campaign. And then pull ahead with the flexibility of weapon stealing and the Homunculi that you can add to as the campaign progresses and are super cheap to revive if they die.

Have you ever roleplayed a female character?

yes when I gm, never when im a player. ive even play exclusively women in mmos, but i never think of myself as "roleplaying" in those games.
when im a gm, i do it to the best of my ability to build a world for my players.
as a player, i have no desire to play anything but a man. i don't really know how to explain it outside of "it feels weird" despite doing it all the time as a gm.

>play male PC
>ends up being a pretty basic wild card character
>play female PC
>actually ends up as a proper character
Why is this? Is it because it's easier to just self insert and disregard the on-paper character when it's a dude, while the foreign perspective of a female forces me to actually engage with the character concept?
