If you could choose the set of core classes (in the PHB/core book and ideally the rest of the classes are designed around them) what would you choose? They don't have to be identical to their current incarnations. For me its,>Ranger, absorbs a lot of the fighter but keeps the independent survivalist schtick.>Paladin, Divine warrior with special abilities but no spells>Rogue,Sneaky stabby martial, basically as he is now>Wizard,>Druid,>Cleric,Default to being lightly armoured wandering friar tuck type character, but with options to put on some armour and bonk.

It has stuff like covering your sword with a jet of flames for extra damage and reach at 3rd level, generally once per encounter due to the refresh mechanics but being 3.5 there are naturally shenanigans to loop.>and what you mean by wargame abilities on the fighterBefore WotC got the IP, it was expected that higher-level characters eventually got positions of political power lording over increasing numbers of class-appropriate NPCs, which grounded the scope-creep of enemies surmounted in actual setting influence which in turn compensated for the proactive value of spellcasting by letting the Fighter send dudes to get things done in a number of places simultaneously because the casters became bosses of a lot less dudes. In the earliest versions, this directly cited the wargame preceding D&D called Chainmail for resolving combats with dozens to hundreds of participants.

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session. Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away. And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.>4e books are ~10-15$ now. Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch. Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings? >4e thread I guess
>>97284813If your players don't go hard in the paint, it can work, especially if you modulate battles towards their strengths.>>97284845I gently disagree, as I believe the wealth of options at all times was a boon for players who wanted to have meaningful impact outside 'I hit the dude'.I've brought in almost a dozen new players to the hobby with 4e, and I have found that it is fairly easy to understand, has depth, and forges good habits of mindfulness and paying attention to the battle when the spotlight isn't directly on you.One of my cherished memories was running a game for some teens at my LGS, and the fighter being the star because she just ran around protecting everyone, forcing a chokepoint and battering the attacking spider demons. The look on her face when the party was cheering her on, watching the group fall in together like a well oiled engine, supporting each other, that is what this hobby really is about for me.That was more than 10 years ago. I wonder what they are doing now?
>>97236120Of course 4e is going through a rennaissance. Compared to the monster that is 5e, 4e is very GM friendly to the point where a guy who hates making preps can actually run a decent campaign.
>>97284665I'm a big 4e fan and an Essentials hater but I'd still rather run pure Essentials than 3e or 5e. Its hated because of how boring its classes are compared to the base game, how unbalanced its classes are even compared to each other and the fact that it throttled books 4e fans actually wanted in the crib like the rest of the X Power 2 books and the Nentir Vale lore book. It then caused a sales crash which killed the edition, exactly what Mearls wanted when he started Essentials. The Monster Vaults, Rules Compendium, adventures and equipment book would have been 10/10 if they weren't formatted like shit. I wish it had run long enough for Monster Vault 2 to redux MM2 like how MV1 was a 95% redux of MM1 with the better math and more options.
>>97284845It's not valid when it breaks the game's curve in an attempt to be different from AEDU. The Essentials classes that aren't worthless dogshit are either still AEDU or are broken as fuck early on and degrade into dogshit later. This is bad when the entire point of 4E was to get away from the Fighter solely hitting things with a stick and sucking at high levels.
So, with 4e being in a small renaissance, I'm thinking I should run my group through a short campaign and see how well they enjoy it. I'm thankful my group isn't diehard 3e/5e only morons since we do play other systems (Call of Cthulhu, The One Ring, and FFG Star Wars for instance) but I need a good hook. I'm thinking of setting the game in the Nentir Vale and cribbing ideas from various adventures, namely I think I will pull from Lost Mines of Phandelver to be sort of the lead in for the overall adventure before connecting it to the D&D Encounters Seasons 8-12. Think it would work?

Why do "modern" and modern people go insane when they see some eldritch blorblo, but Conan could just kill it without going "aaaaaahhh save me niggerman!!!!!"
>That he did not instantly explode in a burst of murderous frenzy is a fact that measures his horror, which paralyzed him where he stood. A civilized man in his position would have sought doubtful refuge in the conclusion that he was insane; it did not occur to the Cimmerian to doubt his senses. why are many creators so afraid of making a setting with napoleonic wars era technology?
>>97286656>But as written, you're saying that never ever ever did both sides just get within firing range and shoot over and over.>Which is of course just ridiculous.NAYRT but that would be an oddity. For a start, if in open terrain how would you get a unit to stand through it? One would break before long, which was the whole point. Units needed to move to hold together in combat. Either towards or away, in general. It's certainly the case in rough terrain (or around fortifications) two sides could end up enmeshed and repelling each other by fire to prevent a close to bayonets. In that case it's less the case that they formed firing lines against each other and more the case that you'd end up with slow wheeling maneuvers to seek flanks and lots of skirmishing. Situations which might be resolved by cavalry or artillery.

How do I make a campaign revolving around the gimmick Arios Theoman's sword Escude revolves around work?To explain>Arios is the "hero" of the setting>He has a magical sword that gets more powerful the more humanity dies>It's a dilemma - he needs the sword to be at least 30 percent powered up to be able to even hurt the demons ravaging his world, but to do that he needs to allow humans to die - or even actively curtail their population himself so as to paradoxically save them It's a killer concept - but I feel like as a campaign it becomes hard to gamify since the players could literally just do nothing, allow the sword to get powered up, and kill the big bad without any moral dilemma at all
>>97286300forgive me, I might be having a stroke>sollective life forcecollective>character of modifierschart of modifiers
>>97284375What if instead of requiring a % of population dying the sword is just powered up by human souls consumed? Then your players have to actively decide if it's worth it to personally slay innocents to power the sword enough to fight demons.
>>97284375What traditional game?
>>97285131>And it is meant to be a retarded system so that the protagonists can punch god in the face for implementing it.That's a horrible way to write a story. Organic and believable conflicts are far more compelling than "we made God a retard so you could hate him"
>>97286882It's the plot of a hentai game, anon. It presents the "hero vs demon king" dichotomy solely for Rance to rip on the concept via his own method of saving humanity outside of genocide (read:kicking the chosen hero in the balls and then punching the demon king in the face with his own team until they come back to their senses, temporarily halting the entire system in its tracks until a more permanent end can be found). But I'm definitely not going to stand up and defend it for what it is, basically a rip on the general concept meant to basically be Alicesoft's version of the Problem of Evil in its own stupid, anime logic way.
