What’s the consensus on solo wargaming? With Battletech Aces I’ve considered trying to run a campaign or convert the rules to classic somehow. I know Killteam has co-op, but I’ve never tried it and idk if they have campaign mechanics. Are these rulesets ass? I want to be able to use my minis on those weeks I can’t meet with my friends.

And while I don't tend to fudge rolls or cheat, making better decisions for one side than the other makes for a pretty uneven game. Best thing I've found is to just lean into it straight away and play "your dudes" against enemy forces with the latter having more dudes but acting semi-randomly.Also the solo RPG thread gets some solo wargame discussion.

With how hard it can be to get groups with some of the smaller games, I sorta feel like it is a very good idea for games to launch with them as a default option. Even if you can find people interested in learning a game, the co-op option this opens up is just really good for getting people to maintain interest.

AI is way too complex, takes forever just to make a simple decision, 2-3 seperate cards for a single action which turns out to be just lol random either way. They could have made an app, just like X-Wing trainer app. But lorch needs his porch, so they do this BS 3 card system of pilot, mech and command. Add on alpha strike mech cards, and other randumb BS, you can easily hit a dozen cards for a single action.

There were two types of fleet: "Battle" fleets, and "Raider" fleets. In the original version, the Imps and Chaos were the Battlefleets, with a couple of special scenario units (the BSFs and Planet Killer, Marine allies). Orks and Corsair Eldar were Raiders, whose fleets were meant to cap out at about 1k point rosters. Marines were purely allies, and never meant to be a coherent fleet at all. But hey. Eldar were the main antagonists in Space Fleet, and we have some ideas. So a battleship and a few more light cruisers wouldn't hurt for funsies. And here, have some neat shit in the Journal we based on kitbashes people put together.Then the Armageddon campaign came out and they needed to make Orks a battle fleet, Marines independent so the Bangles could have the Best Vacation Ever, and oh hell the Imp Navy has been good so they can have some more neat shit like that all-Lance BB we've been joking about for ages. But that means Imps have too much flexibility? Time to introduce sector fleet rules! Anyway. Tau were not-quite Battle fleet testing the modular fleet concept, with options for sickos to use them in campaigns; Forge World didn't get the memo and made their own. Demiurg are (like Marines) an Ally fleet, and as Forge World they got abandoned immediately. Necrons have always been an "experimental" Raider fleet because they never quite nailed down the rules and everyone fucking hated them. Nids burst in fully-formed as a battlefleet with modular fleets, and Dark Eldar were intended to be Raiders using the same ideas. Mechanicus was a straight replacement/upgrade option for Imp Navy players who liked more elite forces (taking the Marines' usual design space). RT were also an Ally option with a single ship, that sort of got tied into the Tau/Demiurg/wolfpack because they were all coming out at the same time

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session. 3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

Hot take: The most annoying color is not blue but white. Mind you it's not the most powerful but if it does pop of you can kiss the pace of the game goodbye when there are thirty different counters spread over 15 creatures. Once you opponent gets to 200 life you can just concede leaving everyone dissatisfied. The game starts feeling like doing your taxes.

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms). However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net. This set, which is no where near finished includes>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles>some English/Welsh fairy tales>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art). I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward.
