Mid-Colonial Island Adventure Setup & System HelpHello fa/tg/uys and a happy new year. I'm planning a new campaign and would appreciate your collective wisdom. I'll lay out the pitch and would like your thoughts, ideas, and especially system recommendations. The year is roughly equivalent to the early 1700s. The players are new arrivals or long-term residents of an island colony. Mere weeks after their arrival it becomes apparent that no ships from the homeland arrive. Ships sent out for help or trade simply vanish. The colony is now utterly isolated. Resources are finite, society is beginning to crack, and the unexplored interior holds ancient secrets.>Resource ScarcityNo contact with the outside world. Every nail, bolt of cloth, and ounce of gunpowder is precious. Gold is the main currency, and it matters—for buying scarce supplies, hiring help, bribing officials or mayby hiring trainers if gold can be tied to character advancement.>Low-to-Mid MagicMagic is rare. Players won't be casting spells at the start. It's something discovered in the forest ruins or bargained for with strange spirits mid-campaign. Church sanctioned magic is the exception with high ranking members of the faith having access to considerable magical power.>Healers for Hire There are a few lowly priests of the faiths that can perform rudimentary healing rituals but demand some gold or favors. This type of healing and warding, especially against diseases, is used by the church to maintain power and influence. They're NPCs, not party members, at least initially and the most common source of magic.>Zero to HeroI would really like for the player to start really low powered. More akin to semi-skilled commoners than competent adventures and it should take time for them to actually become strong and capable. I would like for them to eventually become big players in the island. Maybe even hold titles or positions of power.
>>97271773If you want a Westmarch style 1700s game with rare magic then I would recommend two systems>Old-School EssentialsA fan made expansion of pre-1e dnd. Has a big emphasis on sandbox play and factions. Early spell casters are weak, only knowing 1 spell. Explicitly tells you at what stage players should form their own settlements and have faction-level power>ACKSSame as the former, but much more autistic and granular
Ok I am expanding on the idea a bit and bumping my thread.>The Church of UnityOfficial religion of the Empire. Actually the only religion in the empire. Their whole doctrine is that there is only one god and all other gods that were worshiped previously were either aspects of the one god and thus to be assimilated or demonic creatures from the outer dark to be destroyed. "Aspects" are still revered but not as gods on to themselves. The Church has successfully hoarded all magic knowledge in the empire and keeps it to themselves and locked in monasteries and libraries only to be used on imperial degree. Of course this isn't always the case.>ApostatesApostates are ex members of the church that gained magical knowledge but decided to leave the church behind in order to pursue their own goals or for other, mainly not dogmatic reasons. Officially they are not allowed to practice magic but rules are made to be bent. Sometimes even the Church procures their services.>HereticsHeretics are ex members of the church that gained magical knowledge and use it to spread heresies, false doctrines or to consort with demons. This individuals are hunted with extreme prejudice.(1/2)
>>97277072Magic that comes outside the empire, like the one the natives use, is to be assimilated into the Church or to be destroyed. This can create an interesting point of conflict for the Separatists since they will want access to magic but in order to gain it they would have to either get the Church(at least the ones on the island) on their side, hire Apostates willing to risk becoming heretics since working with the separatists could be seen in a very bad light, go straight for heretics and adopt another dogma or go to the natives in search of such knowledge.Necromancy is considered the most vile of all magic since in requires a living sentient being corrupting the gift of life, the greatest gift the god of unity provides, for their own selfish purposes. Demons, technically not living beings, can't practice necromancy but they can corrupt mortals into doing so. Or so the Church claims. The Not-Aztecs are of course avid necromancy practitioners. All those bodies from the human sacrifices? Free menial labour and shock troops. They could play the de-facto "bad guys", raising dead and searching for more powerful and deprived knowledge in order to finally take the island for themselves.(2/2)>>97271790ACKS seems interesting I should look into it. I was also looking into SotDL or Mythras. SotDL seems approachable but lacks XP progression that I believe is essential for a proper from zero to hero. I don't know much about Mythras but I like the classless approach.
>>97277102You probably want to skip ACKS. The autism and granularity is not on a healthy level, and you're going to end up wasting far more time just going through its "procedures" than you likely would even just making a whole brand new system out of wholecloth. The quality of the rules really leaves much to be desired, and it is all built around some odd assumptions regarding its "roman-esque" default setting, and most of the game seems inadvertently (and occasionally deliberately) designed to be as un-fun as it can be. I have no idea why anyone would recommend it beyond them never actually using it.OSE serves as a solid foundation though, and is a much tighter and more more polished system. Sure, it doesn't do much beyond updating some now-ancient rules a little here and there, but it's generally inoffensive ruleswise and fairly accessible.>SotDLIt's an odd one. Part of me really wanted to like it, but the "tone" of the game never really suited me and my group may have actually started to actively dislike it, because every so often it would get unnecessarily edgy. The real thing that got me though is how the Boons/Banes should work well in theory, but in practice the d6 is a little too unwieldy for the purpose. I feel like using d4's could have helped in regards to smoothing over some of the odd randomness, but you can't really build a system around constantly rolling d4s (because they don't roll).
>>97271332I really like this aproach, where everythings count. Low magic but having to bargain with spirits, its also my jam.Systems, Beyond the wall for his magic system/having a village/colony sounds apropiate if you go OSR like. Mythras, wich si very good for anything down to earth, would be my second option for system. I really like the Colony stuff, tough I usually go for the bronze/iron ge amalgama with lots of inspiration from conan and other pulp stuff. Of late I been reaing books about whaling (because its the nearest thing to monster hunting we have done) and only one whale like a right whale would be a boon for any colony or village, so monster hunting and hte rest could be very well be the diference with starving or being secure.

>>97268751I often suffer from the same issue with Dark Heresy in that people seem to play it as a dungeon crawler and everyone gets over geared rapidly. Current campaign is in hiatus but we're mid career and it's only the second "mission". People walking around with bolters and carapace - again, no one is checking weight/ammo/reloads etc. I bring up playing Wrath instead but everyone just says it's a shit system but they've never played.
>>97279044>Playing what's supposed to be an investigation focused game like a combat oriented dungeon crawler when Deathwatch and Only War are right there >Playing a game focused on combat, dungeon crawling and equipment, but ignoring half of mechanics that give those extra depth Christ...
>>97279070It is what it is.
>>97279044I don't check weight too much, I always felt it was superfluous. However, I do usually use basically loadouts (usually 2 weapons and maybe a sidearm/melee weapon), and tell peeps that if their loadout seems unreasonably heavy then they probably won't fit it on their body. I do tell peeps to carefully check their ammo and reloads, though. OSP is very important, and the teams have to figure out weapon and ammo transportation, such as spending time outfitting a vehicle with ammo racks, purchasing ammo drops, or that one time they bought a porter slave.
>>97279688Weight is intrinsic, there are no "skills" for armor etc so it's a balance for carrying mega-gear. You have people with 20-30 strength & toughness walking around in full carapace with heavy bolters which is massively over weight, still running at full speed (I bet you ignore narrative speeds and just have people turn up at X time, ignoring agility) and lugging around heavy gear. It unbalances the game and makes nullifies things like unnatural strength bonuses etc. It even impacts you jumping and lifting shit which everyone also ignores. It makes me rub my tummy and grumble.
How is it? Looks bretty fun

>>97278198Super Quant got some good legacy support recently, you should give it a try
>>97278142I'm going to explain this without talking about the elephant in the room that is their field spell>Every single one of their monsters searches oneanother by their pendulum effect, and they have built-in methods to get their scales off of the field to ensure that you basically fill up your entire field>Applies lingering effects IMMEDIATELY after they are flipped that either burn your opponent or protects your cards, which is something that some people seem to overlook>One of the above lingering effects (Asta.PIXEA) is a floodgate that prevents your opponent from targeting anything on the field or GYs. For some reason, people overlook the fact that this also prevents them from targeting their own cards. For some reason, it also has a handrip effect when it's flipped by its own effect too.>Half of their monsters have a statline of 3000:2500So, it's a Beatdown/Stun/Control/Burn deck where the only way to reliably out them is non-targeting, non-destructive effects.>uhh... DURRRRR..... but your opponent needs to activate effects in specific locations before you can flip your monsters!!!I've also seen retards say this as though empty jar wasn't a thing in 2005 and its entire strategy didn't revolve around flipping a flip monster, and that we didn't get more cards that flip flip monsters since then.
>>97278088>JokulIt says "both" when summoning the monsters so both targets need to be in hand at resolution to work.>MirrorjadeAny monster effect that happens when it leaves the field/is destroyed/whatever can activate in its new zone (except banished facedown/returned to deck) as well as reference the state it was in on the field (in the case of Mirrorjade: fusion summoned + under its owner's control + removed by opponent's card). A negated monster on the field is only negated in the GY on resolution if the effect itself activated on the field while the monster was negated and the negation didn't specify the monster must remain on the field to stay negated.
>>97278088>other ruling question is does Dark Ruler No More prevent Mirrorjade's leave the battlefield effect? No. It's easier to understand when you conceptualize cards as separate instances when they activate their effects in different locations, rather than the same card which had effects applied to them in other locations. The instance of Mirrorjade that was on the field had its effects negated by the effects of Dark Ruler No More. The effects of Mirrorjade in the GY or banishment did not.Of note; If you return Mirrorjade to the Extra Deck, its effect doesn't trigger. Same applies if Mirrorjade is banished face-down, because they are face-down.

After 11 years in the hobby my hunches are pretty good, and if I somehow wind up with a turd, I'll sell it. >>97272863it's just equipment typical to the different empires. there's no hard restrictions on buying them, it's just separated into, in-universe, which faction makes/uses them. federation equipment is like star trek, ASI equipment is cyberpunk themed, Hegemony equipment is like sci-fi versions of knight/fantasy weaponryOnly Cyberknights are permitted to use Cyberknight armour, and they'll attack you on sight if you wear it outside of their faction. think Brotherhood of Steel power armour.

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

>>97277484I think the idea is that you want know the kind of game you're playing, as a group, going in. So you have a general idea of what kind of tags will come up. I think this helps emulate genres pretty well - most heroes have characters that are relevant to their stories. They also mention a process for using additional actions to leverage more general tags. So while someone with "shadow magic" may be able to use that for stealth right away, maybe they need to take an action to set up using it in a broader context - say something like finding a hidden object in a dungeon or making a disguise so they can't be recognized (things that could reasonably fall within shadow magic, depending on how you define it, but aren't immediately clearly applicable.)
