Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

The game has been officially out for like a month. Give it a little time to breathe. It has a large community for a game this new. People kitbashing, digibashing, painting, building terrain. Getting lots of people into the hobby. I don't understand why people doompost about it so much aside from chud drama.

We're in a cyberpunk dystopia, it's just a gay globohomo slop dystopia instead of a cool neon corpofeudal dystopia

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.
>4e books are ~10-15$ now.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.
Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings?

I actually had a lot of success using the Assassin's mechanics on npcs.
>>
>>97258409
It's not that it doesn't work, it's that it's slow to get the most out of, where as all other Strikers bust out huge damage in a single sit. This makes it unpalatable by comparison.

It's not for everyone because, honestly, most people in this hobby exercise a fairly high level of selfishness and/or vainglory.
>>
>>97258417
My point is that npcs using it on pcs becomes a threat focus; the same mechanic weakness for a pc becomes a strength for enemies.
>>
>>97258434
Oh, AS npcs, not ON npcs. My mistake. Sure, such things would work just fine as a Lurker mechanic, for example, but how monsters and PCs behave is already different to a degree, so this is expected really.

Which of these games do you like the best, if any? They seem to be pretty similar on the surface - resource collecting eurogames.
>>
>>97258074
I like Agricola and Ora et Labora, but saying they're similar is doing a big disservice to all the differences and how they influence your play.
in Agricola early game you're just trying not to starve, and in the late game you might reap the benefits of whatever you had the time to set up early while still trying to not starve. Action blocking is a thing but you score for having a bit of everything and specializing in one or three specific things, so it won't be a big problem until the playgroup learns how to play the aggressive game.
In Ora et Labora you're mainly interested in ways to multiply your wealth and build a nice tableau, food is less of a constant need and more a means to an end, that end being spending your fuckhuge hoard of food and fuel to drop big, rich settlements and score the adjacency bonus on your important buildings, or trade them all to the Church in exchange for relics and holy paintings that somehow alone are worth about as much as a whole castle (maybe more, i forget the exact numbers). But making big money is not easy when other players can just pay you some beer and use your building AND lock it down for the next 3 turns to cuck your engine early.

Fields of fire was pretty good I think
>>
>>97258074
Only played agricola, le havre, glass road and FoA

>Glass road
Was a bit meh for me, semi interesting on the surface but the card selection didn't really result in much interaction and felt somewhat unnecessary. All in all a bit too unexciting for me, still a solid game.
>Fields of Arle
Actually suprisingly good. It's a fiddly thing, of course, but I think it fills a weird niche of 2p heavy-ish but still relaxed game. It's just so pleasant all-arpund and it does clever things, but it's nothing particularly new if you have played a few rosenbergs. The game is clearly a labour of love for his home, and for some unfathomable reason it really does carry the feeling of living in a small frieslandic pastoral community over. I have no idea why.
>Agricola
Bes wp game, one oft the best games ever made. Only with drafting, that is. Admittedly the game does become ever more about the draft after some +25 plays, but it's one of the games tjat offers such deliciously hard decisions I go damn this game is good everytime I play it.
>Le Havre
I've long thought this is also in rosenbergs S tier, but I'm kinda lower on it as of late. It's relatively same-y, even with the random building order and special buildings, and what I assumed would be advanced gameplay with a constant stream of buying and selling never manifested because you lose too much money in the process. It still has good tough decisions, but the shine has really worn off.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

Against an opponent of roughly equal skill, your odds of hitting with a melee attack are usually in the 25-50% range regardless of what skill level you have, because defences rise along with attack skill and the best attack option is usually to lower your effective skill to about 11-12 with a deceptive attack. For landing blows to the face or neck, the 'optimal' skill level against an opponent of equal skill seems to be about 15.
In a boxing match you would generally expect that 20-30% of punches would 'land'. This is roughly consistent with GURPS moderately skilled (12-15) fighters making a mixture of deceptive attacks, dual 'weapon' attacks, and targeted attacks to the face, arms, or vitals along with extensive use of retreats, evaluates, and defensive attacks.
>>
>>97258000
>you can't tell me an experienced mercenary or knight doesn't have a 100% hit chance (barring critical/automatic fails) against an opponent provided he's just trying to strike him
Against a completely unresisting target, when he can use all-out-attack determined and telegraphic attack, virtually anyone (skill 8 or better) can reliably (98%+) land strikes against something the size of a human torso and a skilled (12+) fighter can do it two or even three times a second. Against a moving target which is actively defending, while you have to defend yourself, performance drops dramatically and failure to connect becomes quite common even after slowing attacks to once every couple of seconds as you use feints and evaluates to increase your odds of success.
Sports fighters might 'land' maybe one blow every 5-10 seconds and they are highly skilled, usually only trying to connect lightly, and not fearing for their lives!

Can I get a QRD on how patron, duty, and rank work?
Like say you are a detective a generic police department. In my head, this means that while on duty, you have access to: a gun, a badge, and a car, and you also have to investigate what your boss tells you to investigate.

What combination of patron, duty and rank would give this in GURPS?
>>
>>97258329
Social Engineering: Pulling Rank has guidance for situations of this kind.
>>
>>97258329
An ordinary police detective's job is probably a Duty, because he could end up in a violent confrontation, but it isn't likely to be more than 'fairly often' (this would be a typical full-time job, which would also be nonhazardous, reducing its value to [0]). You might say that even a full-time detective only has a Duty which shows up 'quite rarely', since most of his job is routine and predictable.
Anyone who is part of a law-enforcement organisation has police rank, but this can be Rank 0 [0]. A detective probably qualifies for higher than that, because he can issue orders to beat cops, administrators, and so on.
Patron usually implies someone who has an actual personal connection to you, not just an employer. If you are a replaceable worker to your boss, you don't have a work-related patron. Cops tend to look after their own, so a detective could take his unit as a patron if they would collectively 'have his back' beyond what they are legally obliged to, but this isn't a sure thing.

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

And it's the majority of players, unfortunately. Maybe 25% of the hobby at MOST is even passable at DMing.
>I'm talking about an IRL context, but it's pretty hard to get players to usefully critique DMing, out of politeness if nothing else
Why bother? It's like critiquing some middle schooler's garbage poetry. It's not even worth the trouble, it's not going to help anything.
>>Hey, person who just put a bunch of time and effort into entertaining me and three other people, before I head out I just want to say that the adventure was really bad, I didn't have fun, and you should do things better, by doing them differently, because what you're doing now isn't good.
Yeah, exactly. No one wants to hear that, and also asking for feedback as a DM is cringe as fuck. It's like going to the car mechanic and he asks you afterward to take a look and see if he did it right. No, as a DM, you show up, you deliver, and that's that. You should know if your session went bad. You should know what went wrong, and work on fixing it. If you need to ask for feedback, you are either severely autistic, or fucking retarded. I am not trolling, I am being 100% serious. Maybe I was a little bit hyperbolic earlier, but I am absolutely serious. DMs that try to be super-transparent about their DMing, and want to have meta-conversations about it, are just adding another layer of awfulness to their shit DMing. Do not ask for critique. It doesn't fucking matter, you're not capable of implementing it anyway. If you aren't seeing the problems, there either aren't any, or you're too fucking retarded to fix them. I am dead serious.

Anon that's retarded. Like literally 0 creative hobbies work like that. Everyones got blindspots, especially when it comes to subjective shit like arts, so feedback is important. The issue is that GMs are only asking for feedback from other players, if they actually want good feedback they basically need to record themselves GMing and do a VoD review with another actually good GM

>You should know if your session went bad. You should know what went wrong, and work on fixing it. If you need to ask for feedback, you are either severely autistic, or fucking retarded.
That's the stupidest thing I've read on this board in a while. Game Masters are people, they're not psychic entities that can mind read their players to understand how the session went, especially when said players clam the fuck up and never talk about their issues to the GM's face but gladly shittalk them behind their back, when five minutes of being frank going "you're too stingy with loot" or "we'd like more combat encounters" would fix everything.

>If you aren't seeing the problems, there either aren't any, or you're too fucking retarded to fix them.
And this is the exact mindset that causes games to crash and burn, because everything is suddenly going swimmingly until that one quiet wallflower suddenly explodes and shouts how much they've hated the game from day one and how you always ignore them, despite every day asking if they're all right due to how quiet and nervous they always seem.

Honestly, man, I don't think you play games at all, you just talk about them on reddit and /tg/ pretending to know shit.

>I am being 100% serious.
I know, that's the worst part. Most idiots are serious about their stupidity.

It's doesn't make sense to me either

I lurked a couple of jumpchain threads, don't think I'm enough of a power levels/vs. battles guy to get anything out of it. Unless there's some other appeal I'm missing

We've got a whole board of TTRPG nerds and nobody gets the appeal of theorycrafting characters?
It scratches two itches; first you get to immerse yourself in a setting and come up with a cool OC that's unique to you; and secondly you're doing a little puzzle with character points, requirements, and the like.
I think of it as extremely 4chan, because it's so touch-and-go. You're not committing to join some group when you decide to play a cyoa, you just do a build and throw it out there to compare with other anons. It's something personal like a TTRPG character, but only asks as much time and dedication as you're willing to give it.

No, because they're talking about games, and you're spamming.

How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?

Give it time. Anywhere not called the USA will do so in the next 5 years or so.

>you can just demonstrate those traits are mal-adaptive in their current society
And I would have acknowledged that had the post I replied to mentioned it.

Because there are none. Much like the KKK in the US, actual neonazi orgs are glowed to all hell and only kept around as a convenient scapegoat so nations can ignore all the problems caused by importing infinity immigrants.

Just look at the way Australia framed the recent muslim mass shooting incident as a "far right terror attack"
