Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

We've used a ball toss mechanic with candyland back in the day. You'd draw a card and count the spaces, then have to consecutively land that many balls in cups. You moved only as far as your successful shots, and drank the number you were short. It worked well for our purposes.

I can see a human skill based resolution working in some games, but in others it would be incredibly annoying. That being said, jenga for hit points sounds fun.

Give it a shot, OP, and let us know how it goes

This reminds me of my tiddlywinks idea, big bowls small bowls, tall ones, armored things have half the top covered, more skill is more tiddlywinks .

I really want to reply to this post seriously, but OP seems to be actually mentally ill. Or a child.

Bro can you stop typing like a retard? I'll give you a system that is interesting. Riddle of Steel is interesting. You get a pool of dice and must bet the number of dice to roll to attack and the number to roll to defend. Additionally, certain moves require certain number of dice. Favoring a more weighted approach benefits certain maneuvers. Favoring a more balanced approach benefits others. It's also extremely lethal, so there's a lot of risk in betting. There's also a very strong riposte mechanic to balance "all in" spam. It's a good system.

My system is even better, but you're acting too much like a retard for me to post it.

What’s the consensus on solo wargaming? With Battletech Aces I’ve considered trying to run a campaign or convert the rules to classic somehow. I know Killteam has co-op, but I’ve never tried it and idk if they have campaign mechanics. Are these rulesets ass? I want to be able to use my minis on those weeks I can’t meet with my friends.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.

1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).

2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session.

3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

>1. time pressure
Cool.
>including real life clocks
lol no don't do gimick shit like this. Its not hard to keep track of time in game in a clear and visually apparent way like a big D6 or anything to note the passing of time.
>contentious
What's contentious about it? If a player is taking too long tell them they're taking too long and need to make a decision with descriptive notes.
>2. The Gming engine
This is a bad gameplay style and makes the rest of your 'advice' make more sense. Don't prep railroads or plots. Prep situations and factions for story games. Prep the actual fucking dungeon if its a crawler. Go back and read how an actual session zero is suppose to run, like from the source that idea came from. If you don't know, again, that illuminates your well intentioned but bad advice.
>3. muh immersion
This is taken are of in any basic post game wrap and prep. Again, have factions and situations not plots.
>4. clocks and events
Seems fine although the chances of you fucking it up given the first three is strong. You have to have your clocks factions be in relation to player events and reactive rather than prescriptively following your set events. No clear indication you understand that.
>5. RPGs are an exercise in solopsism
fuck off and then fuck off again. They're an exercise in group gameplay and contextual exploration with emergent story. Its a group activity, not solipsism or any sort of quantum bullshit you're soft advocating for.

>9. OOC conversation
Again, this is totally fine to do and necessary. Trying to get everyone to thespian it up all in character and do the dialogues all in character is a waste of everyone's time. Do not do this. Players and the GM can summarize a dialogue their character is making you do not have to nor should it be word-for-word in character dialogue.
>I search my memory for blahblahbblah
yeah fuck that. We don't have time for that shit and your immersion can't be that fragile or using a dice or a pen or reading in english or anything will snap it. You almost have it with characters basic knowledge, but you can just tell them that shit. Ties in with 7.
>10. Fail forward meme
Say what bluntly?
>11. 3 sentence maximum
Good. Less is more. Make it terse but evocative.
>12. Reactive elaboration
Yes, good. Make use of well tailored tables and background world thinking to make this more seamless.
>13. Obstacles not solutions
Again yes. Good.
>14. Conflict
Varies, too vague advice on your part to do much with. Generally always erring on xyz makes you predictable in ways your players are too polite to tell you they've figured out. Again, random tables are utility tools.

>Binder
I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking with this class.
>Oh hey let's make a squishy ranged controller
>Now let's make it's primary controller feature be based around standing in melee with enemies or beign the one to deal the killing blow(minions didn't count iirc?)
Honestly the Hexblade was everything the Binder should have been.
>>
>>97282374
Binder seems like it was supposed to be designed with a Curse like base Warlock so it could trigger its Pact Boon at ranged when its Cursed target went down but they didn't want it to be damage and just erased it right before shipping it. What I would have done is make the Curse be "Minor Action you lay your Curse on the closest target. When you hit your Cursed target it is Slowed/Slid/Gains Vulnerable/whatever based on your Pact. When a target under your Curse falls to 0 Hit Points trigger your Pact Boon".

Instead they made you, a Controller, have to finish something off or be next to it. And in a jank way to facilitate that you get at-wills that are fake Blasts so you can fire them off in melee. I wish I could have been in the room when they decided on that asinine bandaid. And to top it off as written you can't take the generic or other Pact specific Encounter Powers. It specifically says "You gain an encounter attack power associated with your pact." which absolutely guts your pool of Powers.

If someone for some psychotic reason wants to play Binder just slap them and then make them play base Warlock, especially almost any Cha Warlock. You'll still have access to the Binder Powers if you really want them but the increased flexibility, better Pact boons, Curse which opens up so many options, the ability to stay ranged and in the end more consistent Control its just better.

Similarly if someone wants to play Bladesinger you should beat them with a brick. If you want to be a magic sword guy Swordmage is awesome, Hexblade is okay and you can rig Sorcerer to be melee too. Or if you desperately want to be a Wizard then be a Mage and use AIP to poach a longsword onto it and waggle that around like a wand. Hell even just Hybrid Wizard with literally anything is better than Bladesinger.
>>
>>97282579
>Bladesinger
That class at least has an interesting enough gimmick. If it wasn't a half-assed essentials class I think it could have been decent.

Why are you buying into a brand name when there's plenty of games out there? does it need to say Dungeons and Dragons on the cover for you to play it, or are both you and your players flexible enough to try something new? if so, give it a shot. I started a bunch of players off on ICRPG, they had a great time.

Oh I'm a big fan of Pike and Shot myself. I would post that pic but I'd rather post the Bayonet reaction instead. This already exists, but I believe it could be two different things:
1. First of all, it should be available to any unit wielding bayonets, not only Solar Auxilia
2. Second, bayonets are auxiliary weapons but aren't necessarily defensive only. You can affix bayonets and charge instead of simply prepare for the enemy to reach you. That's why I'm calling for bayonets to give you a bonus bigger than AP5. A soldier with a bayonet does not need to switch from his rifle to his combat blade – let it grant Assault to the gun it's mounted on. Bayonets already were +1S before, maybe let that be the extra bonus for the more expensive chain bayonets, on top of granting the Assault keyword?
3. I greatly disagreed with spears being both faster and stronger than swords past edition. S(U) +1i works in both offence and defense. I'd rather swap their Precision for Breaching 6 to make them be more in line with the others...but I'm sure you divergent folk enjoy the difference (and never use them anyways).

I'd unlock bayonets on weapons, not units, because I want Seekers to be able to get bayonets on their kraken bolters but not on their sniper rifles.
If you unlock bayonets on bolters, kraken bolters, plasma guns and melta guns (??), that affects Veteran Tacticals, Tacticals, Tactical Support squad, Seekers and Centurion Command Squads and Augury Command Squads.

Honestly I'm 99% sure the 'polearms are faster' thing is because GW imagines them as lances.

Ignoring the fact that 99% of models with a power lance aren't riding a bike/using a jump pack

That's not to say shit like pikes can't be used on the charge, but the benefit in doing so is really just reach, honestly imo the AoS thing of melee weapons having range as well wasn't to bad an idea

Not as a (cavalry) lance. But does a spear have more reach than a regular sword? Sure thing. Reach 1 became I+1, and the average polearm is a spear indeed.
Does cavalry have Impact (S)? It'd be nice if they did

One or two veterans having the ability to put a bayonet on their special weapon is peanuts compared to a whole unit not being able to take bayonets because their bolters are loaded with different ammo or there's a scope.
>>
>>97282817
Iirc some lances like the militia ones give it but otherwise they don't

>>97282862
But anon, didn't you get the memo? There's no such thing as "special ammo", Banestrike Bolters/Kraken Bolters/etc are now specific types of bolter so GW can sell more upgrade kits

I actually find the concept of Mercenary Espionage interesting. A firm that performs secret missions for the highest bidder, offering a subtlety and reach that the state intel agencies can't match.

>Could the Corporate Espionage be made up of former members of ROM?
Do you think former ROM agents could have iron clad fake identities and decide to form a mercenary company to sell their services to the highest bidder?

Survivor's Quest is fine other than the Droideka fight needing too much gimmick rather than just getting out of line-of-sight and force crushing.,

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.
Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

What systems do what this one wants to better?
>>
>>97281603
Absolutely take what I say with a grain of salt since I'm no game dev, but I'd honestly stick to a Powered by the Apocalypse game system, since it seems to want to be basically a more customizable version of that with the whole Tropes and Tags idea of character building. Though in a sense, it also reminds me a lot of Risus in that way.
>>
>>97282455
The biggest thing I struggle with for the PBTA stuff is the moves feel constricting to me. I just don't feel like I'm authentically doing what I want to when it comes to do "all actions you can take are one of these 9 moves."

We now know why moths and other bugs fly like crazy around artificial light forces - it fucks with their vision because they fly with the assistance of the sun and/or moon above them, so other light sources fuck up their senses and they want to get that light above them.

in the old World of Darkness, Mothman is a creature brought about by the curse laid down by the murder of an Injun named Chief Cornstalk (lmao)
