This is acknowledged within the aesthetic. There are two acknowledged subdivisions of dieselpunk, with World War 2 as the central divide.
>"Piecraftian" dieselpunk is during/post-WW2
>"Ottensian" dieselpunk is pre-WW2
>>
>>97256237
>1940's WW2 and the aftermath. The culmination of the insanity reaching boiling point in the form of another World War. From Paris to island beachs in the Pacific people must take up arms again. Britain and France need Allies to defend against the Axis, but who are the Allies and who are the Axis? America is hesitant to join the war effort, China is besieged by Japan, Russia has a treaty with German, Japan is in a uneasy partnership with Germany, and Mexico is receiving messages from Germany promising them American land if they join the Axis. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and Hilter Marching on the USSR makes everything clear. The teams have been determined and war is in full swing. Rationing at home for the boys abroad, Women entering the work place, and everyone making sure that everyone is doing their part, aka TURN OUT THAT LIGHT. Espionage between enemy and ally and ally and ally ramps up to discover everyone's secrets. After never-ending combat 2 bombs send a loud roar over the nation of Japan with fire and force shaking the earth and blinding the sky. They announce the end of the war and the new age of man, the Atomic Age.

The point is there was so much going on in that time, for example the birth of aviation combat or sea Battles of WW1 or the formation of the studio system in Hollywood. If the only thing you know is the very end, Nazi spies for atomic secrets, you aren't properly using the setting. If you are really interested in things that have to do with Deisel Punk you need to do you research. There's a wealth of cool things waiting to be discovered by you and shown to the modern world. Trapping yourself in what has been presented to a mainstream audience since the late 80's is not going to do anything.

Thank you for reading.

>Complaining about the most recognizable period of Diesel Punk
No that's not the purpose of my post. I understand why there is a focus on WW2. My point is people in this thread who are interested in this time period but feel pigeonholed to one part of it need explore more and see all the different things it has to offer.
>>97256326
That's nice but why isn't this being shared with the people who are saying that they don't see much of this period other than getting to the Atomic age?

Where did this no happy endings in cyberpunk thing come from?

Atompunk isn't actually a thing, you're just describing an, incorrect, fanbase assumption about Fallout - which doesn't actually fit your criteria either.

I’m running a low fantasy game, and social advancement is gonna be a thing. So the PCs are gonna be rubbing elbows with a lot of noble families as they make their way into high society. I’m just asking for NPCs and ideas.
Most of the nobility are humans, but a few are half-elves and halflings.

>If you're aiming for maximum believability, there's almost no way that humans would accept a different species ruling them. They struggle enough with humans of different nationalities ruling them (William of Normandy had to practically burn down England before they stopped revolting at the idea of a Norman King).

I will clarify that the half-elven (as in humans with significant elven ancestry) and halfling nobles are mostly ruling over other half-elves/halflings, or areas that have integrated for centuries at this point.

Honestly the competitive only side of things has ruined most games beyond just 40k. Any conversion for 40k, AoS, or even old world has led to some people getting pissy. You get questions like, "How will someone know that this conversion is supposed to be a bloodthirster." I don't know, maybe because it is one of only two bloodthirsters in a list and is one of the largest models on the board.
>>
Great group, mostly. Biggest problem is this one annoying troon who keeps trying to migrate everyone to her personal discord and act as the "group mother" despite not playing games a lot. She's a great opponent when she does play (Old World, 2e 40k, etc) but she tries to police what everyone else does. Nobody really pays her mind and asks her to leave them alone when it gets overbearing.

This isn’t a thing anymore and its a shame because even with sound off a local scifi toystore is where I first say bits of the Matrix and all sorts of cool things that got me excited as a young kids.

Pre-covid I played at an LGS that had a years old standing community that followed the shop as it grew through four different locations.
Post-covid the old boys straight up disappeared and the new crowd is totally different, mostly DND5E types and a whole different batch of 40k players. I still buy from them, but I don't like playing there anymore. It's too weird, like the covid lockdown is the temporal line of a Mandela Effect for the store's game room.

If they really wanted to make a good Monty Python game they should base it on the weird animated segments rather than yet more Holy Grail. I remember there was this old computer game from the late 80s or early 90s like that, but sadly it was just another Mario-clone since the technology just wasn't there yet to do it justice.

The original game at least and not the relaunch uses a d100 and is much less heroic fantasy, way more lethal too. The tone is of course more gritty as well but with less of a focus on combat, more on camp supplies and shit (from what I remember)

I’ve played about 30 games from launch at my LGS and events. It’s unfortunately the weakest version of Heresy fluff wise, in most aspects, and game wise, it’s erring closer to modern wargame design trends in a way that make it more fair, (I think the balance here is the best the game has been out of box) but make it feel so much more like a shitty board game. The missions aren’t conducive to interesting role play, Line and Vanguard make units feel a lot more one dimensional than I’d think of, the strange culling of melee statlines has made some units pillow fisted, and really discourages you from tricking out units with other options (there is zero reason to ever give tac sgts power weapons now, which is so damn sad).

The worst part about it is that the community that I built at my LGS over the last 3 years died overnight because the things that I promised them are now gone. No more “there’s no edition churn!”, no more “you can make your army as fluffy as you want and the game has a bunch of rules and options to support it!”, no more “you can use your favorite missions from the old editions!”

Part of that is absolutely on me for being positive about GW for more than a moment but it’s just so damn sad. Pic related, local con that had 20ish peeps during 2.0’s tenure had 7 this year. I’m kinda over it, my 3e Mantis Warriors and Chaos armies have been most of my hobby focus this year.

So what recourse is there? I’ve just starting getting into HH because of the models and would really like to play. Is it possible to put together a respectable set of community rules compiling the best rules that 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 has to offer? Or would this not be accepted and people will just play one of the 3 editions without wanting to try something that wasn’t 100% created by GW rule wise? I’d even be willing to give it a crack.

So, imagine for a second that a GM is pitching you a sci-fi game to play in soon. The setting is "like StarCraft," the rules system is a new one to you (Flex D6 if it's essential you know), and the general flow of the game is described as flying a small ship around and going on planet side adventures in the face of an approaching disaster.
What do you need to know, or want to know, ahead of time? What would be useful to you practically, creatively, etc? Do you want a session zero?
>>
>>97250918

Yes, but has to be setting description, group character creation and a short encounter to get everyone on board.

Rules to the game ideally on a quick reference sheet or short 4 page thing.

Scifi sort, space opera, fantastical, very soft, a bit more technical, are the people I'm playing with part of a regular group or new?
>useful
Elevator pitch for the setting, blurbs for the space area, how space travel works, what themes we're aiming at, how character mortality works.

This one I've been thinking alot:
Low fantasy early modernity but there is no gunpowder: pike warfare, swordsmanship and archery dominate and are developed to new levels.
The longsword never goes out of fashion and becomes something akin to what the katana was to the japanese.
Set in a northern confederacy, a lot of conflict is settled locally by private wars, judicial combat and duels.

I dislike the rigidity of dnd classes, I would like for everything to be way more open to player choice. Maybe even make the magic system free form, I've heard Macchiato Monsters does it for example. Other than that no clue. Shouldn't be too crunchy but also not too rules light. As long as I don't write it this system will never exist. Doesn't Bilbo manage to reason with Smaug at least semi-successfully? Yes he considers any mortal affairs totally beneath him but he does have a huge ego and is vulnerable to bargaining and especially flattery. I read the book a long time ago so I can't promise I'm not misremembering.

And yes of course Smaug does quickly see through the flattery but that's because Bilbo actually was trying to steal from him.
>>
>>97253010
He misleads him, very briefly as you described, and then Smaug quickly sorties out, tries to find and kill the dwarves, fails to find them and so burns or eats most of their ponies so they can't escape the Lonely Mountain, and then flies off to Laketown just to fuck shit up, intending to return and root them out and torture them to death immediately after. The dorfs and Bilbo would've been completely fucked if there wasn't Deux Ex Machina Man, descendant of the King of Dale, with a never-before-mentioned Super Special Magic Macguffin Arrow, who talked to a fucking bird to learn Smaug's weakpoint and then was lucky enough to land a perfect instakill shot with said arrow. Weakest part of an otherwise perfect story. I don't think Tolkien wrote himself into a corner, I think he just wanted to find some way to involve Men in the Battle of the Five Armies, as if a mountain full of fucking gold wasn't motivation enough.
But TLDR no, he doesn't reason with Smaug at all, and if he hadn't had the ring during their brief exchange, he'd have been a pile of ashes.
>>
>>97253085
It's true that Bilbo only survives through remaining unseen and Smaug would have gladly killed him if given the opportunity, but my point is that dragons, especially those lesser than Smaug, aren't stupid and could respect the power of dangerous rivals and negotiate, at least until they found a way to take the said power for themselves.
