>>97360865That's neat; decent production value for an amateur project test kit.>>97360900Did the first iterations develop in such a way that revealed inherent structural weaknesses?I've been building my own base system for skirmish games for a while, but because I suck at maths, finding the sweet spot for bonuses and balancing stats for asymmetrical point values has been very hit and miss. And I throw out and bring back dice curves on alternating weeks, because I am indecisive about how swingy I want it.On a level, it's good to never be satisfied with your own work; but I feel like my portfolio would look less empty if I had shat out a few flawed iterations to completion first; even if I were less than happy with the results. So next time I hack something together that *kinda* works I'mma run with it for a while, instead of abandoning it in the woods like a baby with a hare lip.
>>97282550That's dumb
>>97362226Your mother is dumb, but you still kiss her.
>>97362049>Did the first iterations develop in such a way that revealed inherent structural weaknesses?yes in the sense that there was little structural development to speak of. the actual game design didn't occur until 2024ish.>but because I suck at maths, finding the sweet spot for bonuses and balancing stats for asymmetrical point values has been very hit and miss.i started by sorting them into tiers based on much immediate card advantage effects caused. if you know the ones that are clearly the most powerful and clearly the weakest, you can start to fill in a hierarchy and then adjust cost weights from there.for example picrel is the current weighting iteration of card effects in the game (as translated into card costs)
>>97362543Seems rational.Given the nature of my project I'm gonna need to build a similar sort of matrix, so I can cross-reference the value weight of different stats and bonuses when prototyping a unit.
Tell me /tg/ what makes a good tabletop wargame?
>>97361746Ideally it should be realistic enough to provide training for future and current officers but be fun enough to also be a leisure activity for the civilian market. It should have some mechanic to represent the fog of war, and an element of randomness to represent the unpredictability of war.
>>97361922Is such a game even possible? Usually you can get 2/3.>>97362124Funny thing is 40k is often considered quick as far as wargames good. Its just the endless arguing over rules that tend to slow down matches.

>>97362687I have my fair share of complaints about the game, too, and I have frequently made them in this thread. Nobody has said that people shouldn't be allowed to talk about things they don't like, nor had anything said anything that could possibly be taken to imply that. Complaining about the incessant negativity in these threads is not the same as trying to shut down criticism, and in all honestly, you thinking that bemoaning that negativity and actually overall liking the game is enough to make someone a yes man makes you sound exactly like the kind of poster I was talking about, someone who complains just to complain rather than out of any genuine interest in discussing the game.
>>97362582I like a lot of things. Most of the Exalt types are cool. I think a lot of factions are based on really cool concepts. Sorcery is dope and so is MA and Crafting (in theory). Having incredible powers is great and so is being the heir to a superhero legacy. It's just a lot of their "Elitist Jerk" stuff falls flat for me. It doesn't feel good, it just doesn't get any simpler than that. The Great Curse just doesn't feel good for instance
>>97362732I think the incessant negativity is good because it takes that energy to make the game better. Let the dissatisfaction boil over and then turn it into something better. The problem with the threads as they are is that it can't get to that part as there's always a guy saying shit like you can't dislike a part of the game because some book quote justifies it, and it becomes an argument. That part is the negativity I don't like, complaining about the game is good.
>>97362804You'd have to be outright delusional to look at /exg/ and think that the negativity here is a good thing, or that people telling other people to stop disliking the game is the problem here. Negativity can be good, sure. It can be constructive. That's not the kind of negativity we have going on, though. Negativity here is stale and pointless, with same complaints and arguments repeating ad nauseam, with few new ideas or fresh perspectives. There is neither energy nor inspiration here.

In a world with a firmament, how far could you see? Could you see everything if you were on a mountain or would air density and pressure and such set a max view distance?
>>97356697I usually start with a story then add and subtract based on what leads to a better story. Usually this cascades into the smaller details.
>>97336483I'll be honest, that sounds quite interesting to me, so I'm not sure I'm a great judge for why you're getting a tepid response. I have some ideas though. If you're trying to convert an existing setting that people are connected with, they may be against the perceived "loss" of the old setting. I've also noticed a stigma around the concept of steampunk settings, but usually just for being "cringey" rather than anything specific. Some people also prefer settings that are more personal, and consider settings with more ship-on-ship combat to be less engaging. That could also be why the people you talk to prefer grounded low-magic settings. Low-magic usually is also easier for people to relate to, if they just want a setting with very minor changes to their "normal". I think that's a similar reason why cyberpunk settings are also usually "safe".How do you pitch the idea to others, is it as straightforward as this post? Sometimes it can just be a matter of a bad pitch that gives the wrong impression.
>>97358029It might depend on what other physics you want to shift to get the world to be "stable". Assuming you don't do that sort of simulation: air density, pressure, general weather, and other obstructions would limit the view.Where I live you need a particularly clear and calm day to even see 7 miles away from a mountain top. It's probably unlikely that a flat firmament world would have a day completely clear and calm across the entire surface, especially when you include the different types of weather phenomena. Though it could allow for an interesting event akin to the borealis or an eclipse, where you could see across the entire distance.
>>97336483>turning my very natural fantasy setting into one with steampunk societies. Airships and pirates, similar to Skies of Arcadia and it slides into a nature vs technology theme. Can't say I'm keen on it either anon. "Steampunk" means a different coat of paint 90% of the time, and since I never played Skies of Arcadia, it doesn't click anything in my head. What else can you say about it? Does the planet has land, or is it just air? I once tried to make something inspired on planetary romance, a gas giant with normal gravity and breathable atmosphere in the middle layers, being too thin upwards and the pressure too powerful downwards. The floating islands existed due to a red element, most of which orbited the planet as a ring of crimson icebergs, and after someone figured out how to power airships with it, people were fighting for land and mining it out of existence. >Why does it feel like everyone I know only wants grounded low magic fantasy settings? No idea.Gonna throw links at your screen, see if something helps.https://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/2013/24518330/https://archive.org/details/windships_a_guide_to_riding_the_sky/mode/2upComment too long. Is FoW good? Is it fun?
>>97362613It's pretty good for a "Magic-but" I'd say. Fixes the land problem, but doesn't particularly innovate too much elsewhere. My friends and I enjoy it casually. No idea what the meta looks like these days.
