>>97355638If I remember correctly most named characters required permission and asked for a list above 1500 points.Since most games where played between 500 and 1500, rules wise you could not see a named character even if you had permission because you would need to play a 1501 or more game. But then again charactes back then even the most meme ones like Celestine where hardly the mandatory mess that they are in 10th
>>97355596I know.I mean current 10th can't tell the difference between a shotgun and autogun or a power hammer and a claw. But they bent out shape if they can't represent exactly a named character that they only used in 10th because it has a bunch of baked rules that screw over their army mechanically if they do not run it.
>>97355638>>97355666There was also just a general attitude that special characters were, well, special. They were for theme lists and "historical" scenarios, not something you trotted out every single weekend so you could play Saturday Morning Cartoonhammer.

Hey thereI've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed oneAny experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?Or general tips for running games on LGS ? For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.Comment too long. >>97352130lol you did shift over to quantum ogres. That didn't take long.
>>97355649Its not quantum ogre because:>there's nothing I pre-plan, it all depends on previous rolls and/or player goals>even if everything leads to a given thing showing up, it will be still up to chance (I would make it very likely to show up, but not certain)
>>97355649>>97355711Adding to this... I literally almost fell to the quantum ogre theory when I started to plan this campaign:>decided that first session would not start in camp>instead, players will have fled the sinking ship on a long boat and land somewhere else on the coast>first quest is to find the remaining of the survivors (aka the camp)>players have two options - follow the coast north or south>one is where the rest of the survivors are, the other now>"but what if they go wrong way? maybe i should put the survivors to any direction they go">immediately realized *THAT* would be textbook quantum ogresNow I'm between either dropping that idea and already starting at camp w/ ~3 rumors (what I had in mind for session 2), or maybe still do the idea but set camp on a fixed direction (effectively keying it to a hex), and in case they go to another direction too badIn the latter case, penalty for not finding the rest of the crew would be missing an experience reward from doing the objective, but still they could just go another route or even decide to fuck it and go deeper into the continent to see what's there. Depending on how far they explore, they could potentially make as much experience not following the objectiveComment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>97355767>Thoughts anyone? You've got more than enough ideas that its getting in the way of running your game. Really. Its just piling more shit on at this point and I get you're excited about a thing but the more you fantasize about it before playing it the worse its going to get.
>>97355777Well, if I could I would have scheduled the first session for today (Tuesday night), but manager from the LGS said there were already too many groups playing today and asked to start at next week insteadWhile I agree that thinking too much can be a problem, I'm actually getting A LOT of prep done these past few days. Currently, I'm researching combat balance tips and CR monsters to put together interesting tables of what can be featured on which biome and whatnot. Nevertheless, some ideas that come to me I just put them on hold because there are things that are simply not worth thinking about at this stageOne thing that came to me right now is:>my play test session has only 3 PCs atm>however, I'm "balancing" everything to be at least 4 PCs>considering inviting one of the "official" players to the test session (lets call him Bob)>that could potentially make the test session an official session>next Tuesday, I would tell the new players that the Bob's PC arrived in the camp later and already explored the wildernessThis would be interesting because it would fix the size problem for my test group, and would link both groups together - that way, if the group I'm using for test decides to keep playing the WM campaign, I could run that group in parallel (that would be schedule efficient since we already meet every week anyways) while already having a connection to the "main" LGS groupHelps that Bob already knows my core group since they are all part of my MtG draft group
I'm looking for duelist / flintlock-wielding girls who'd fit into a Warhammer Fantasy RPG. Sadly, it's really hard to any that don't look too anime.

How much would/should changing the default setting from High Medieval to Late Bronze Age change the game? For example, lowering AC across the board to simulate the lack of general armour. How much would that affect balance?
>>97350722D&D is practically that already, you just need to extract a few items.
>>97355062>but back in the Bronze Age I don't think Egypt was any more advanced or civilized than the Indus Valley Civilizationyou would be wrong
>>97355062It depends on how you count and it's all up for debate because a lot of exciting discoveries are being made over the last 20 years. But yes, that's right. Sumer starts having "cities" before either one, but the Indus Valley and Egypt both appear around the end of the 4th millenium bce (3300-3000). But yeah, it's dope. Also the Indus Valley civilization was in the Indus Valley. Which isn't in India (mostly). Also India just isn't some uncivilized shithole. It's rad and democratic and english-speaking. What it is? Fucking huge. And it's got corrupt officials and huge wealth inequity. Which all pretty much equally apply to the US. Go look at the worst off parts of Appalachia where literacy is around 65%. India is neat.
>>97355062>>97355107Oh, also it's mostly called Harrapan (after the type-site) rather than "Indus Valley Civilization" in professional literature because A. that's the right convention for naming archeological civilizations and B. India and Pakistan are in an entirely political and stupid fight about what counts as what where.
>>97350722"Bronze" and "Iron" ages are limiters for no reason in a fantasy setting. Many things that were invented or came after the iron age could just as well be created on the bronze age if there was an effort for it.Hell, we could've discovered gunpowder before iron or even smelting metals was a thing.Think about what is different on your setting from own world then decide what technologies your setting has given the consequences of those changes.

>>97353960Tatooine's importance makes sense in the Lucas filmsIt doesn't in other media
>>97354683I suppose Tatooine appears more prominent to us because how often it shows up in secondary media due to OT nostalgia, but in-universe there's stuff constantly happening on thousands of other planets as well but we don't get to see it. Most of the times Tatooine appears and isn't directly related to the Skywalkers it's some variation of "some dude went there and shot some sand people and stuff while on some mission", which isn't something that would really catch the galaxy's attention. One of the Rakaata star maps was there in KOTOR, but there were some on other planets there so that isn't an exclusive Tatooine thing.

>>97352571sexo with unimpressed brunette mousegirl
>>97355303If you have access to nanomachines and AI tech you're not far off from just producing millions of humans in artificial womb vats with recombinant DNA so they aren't all just clones. You could CRISPR it up and repopulate the planet with millions of 100% White intelligent beautiful people in a generation.
>>97352571This picture could be set in the same world as CATastrophe.
>>97355750The problem, of course, is that any artificially seeded population like that will naturally have less biodiveristy, and the more you 'tailor' it to meet your preferences the more that becomes true. You might prevent them all from being clones or tightly related, but you'll never have gene expressions that fell outside of your original sample group. And tailoring on top of that introduces new problems. There is no 'make smarter' gene. There is no 'make pretty' gene. The more you try to force those outcomes at the genetic level rather than the developmental level, the more likely you are to create a civilization of brain damaged people who are excellent at certain tasks because you forced them to be, but absolutely dogshit at other things. Like people who are excellent at math and music and pattern recognition but who don't lack inference ability and struggle to handle problems that are not clearly pre-formatted for them them to ingest. The most amazing test takers in the world who can't handle a vague situation with unclear conditions.

You have a friend who loves fantasy but especially lighter YA novel level stuff like percy jackson. Theyll get a lot of lower level concepts, but anything too fringe will scare them offWhat are you busting out to give them their first tabletop experienceI'm wracking my brain because I play a lot of niche shit, but the bigger fantasy games I can think of or have played are bit too unfriendly to someone new (oathmark, old world fantasy stuff), Im definitely NOT bringing out malifaux, and most of my games are scifi leaning. But I really want this person to have a good first experience using themes they can relate to
>>97353499mitebecool Need to look into it and see how fiddly the unit cards are and how much of the game becomes playing with the cards. As is the potential for activation of slots and that being where damage could be neat, could be wack. Thanks anon.
>>97355526Frostgrave or Rangers of Shadowdeep coop might be light enough and a small enough number of units.
>>97355601I'm currently on and off painting terrain and minis, and writing scenarios for a Shadowdeep/Stargrave mashup, where the players are the crew of a crash-landed space ship trying to escape an alien planet.'S to play with my friends and neighbors; the system is ultralight, so it's eminently palatable for normies and other crunch averse types.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. >>97355524"Goal" is a weird phrasing, but yes. The OSR was specifically a movement to revive the original play style of D&D, which was expressed in OD&D, AD&D 1E, and Basic D&D. This play style was pushed out around 1984 in favor of railroaded "trad" fantasy stories of epic adventure because that's where the customer money was, hence the "first decade" cutoff.
>>97355524Goal of OSR movement was to preserve pre-WotC D&D, because WotC dropped all support in 2000 and showed no plans for reprints.By 2002, the "old school revival" discussions began, and they did stuff like trying to start petitions and started planning games like C&C, which was released in 2004. But, OSR was really small and fragmented back then, and Matt Finch left C&C to try and make OSRIC, which had a much more narrow idea of what OSR was. OSRIC was released in 2006, and had almost no popularity at all thanks to bad timing, leading Finch to leave and try again with Swords and Wizardry in 2008, but by then there were plenty of other OSR games with a much different philosophy than what Finch and his followers were trying to promote.Fast forward a bit to 2014, and 5e has revitalized RPG popularity, and becomes the tide that lifts all ships, including OSR games, which start to become actually lucrative. OSR becomes a very profitable phrase, particularly once 5e's overwhelming domination on RPGs starts to wane (roughly around 2018-2019) while Stranger Things (2016) also helped revitalize interest in older games. The OSR community grows pretty large, and all sorts of games get added to the OSR family, including some that don't even share a lineage with any edition of D&D but still try to recreate some facets of older play styles, usually dungeon crawling with high lethality being common. Some people in the OSR try to dismissively name some of these games "NuSR" in order to make them separate from the rest of the OSR, though ironically many of those games (such as Shadowdark) become incredibly popular and presenting themselves as "OSR, but better" actually helped further increase that popularity.Funnily enough, the original "goal" of OSR was accomplished years ago, with WotC releasing the entire D&D collection and even reprinting some choice titles, and the continued OSR community has developed multiple other goals since then.
>>97355775>Goal of OSR movement was to preserve pre-WotC D&DNope, this is a lie. This is far too broad and simplistic, and anyone who likes the OSR knows it's not true.
>>97355792It's broad because it's the truth, and attempting to narrow it down is where the lies come, usually lies from small factions within the OSR who hope to pretend their narrow view is the "true" version at the expense of the rest of the OSR community.
>>97355810Sorry, no, this is wrong and you've fundamentally misunderstood the OSR.
