Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

If you want to reduce the number of shuffles you make each turn and go into your deck a lot, ask the opp if they're ok with you doing a single shuffle and cut at the end of your turn (and before you draw a card if applicable).
Other post outlines a usual simple method. I can maybe aid in it by drawing a simple diagram. I combined written steps 1 and 2 into drawn step 1. The idea is that you're shoving the corners of your left hand pile in between the side edges of your right hand pile and then straightening the halves once they have about 1cm of overlap.
>>
>>97226727
I'd like to see them retrain all the handtraps with the charmy text. The biggest problem with them has always been the going 1st player using them on the 2nd player's turn. How often have you managed to break their board and then your last card gets ash'd and you're just fucked?

With >>97225249 being a prime example, and not just about MtG but about life in general, younger folks usually have more of a tendency to project some idealized image of the past into their brain and be very vehement about it. The people who were actually there know better usually.

Now don't get me wrong, older folks have a different but somewhat similar bias as well, idealizing their own teen years. So the important part is to see which overlaps are where on a timeline, because these are two kind of biases that are very strong in people. One is about the perfect outside (ideal past), other about the perfect inside (ideal me).

Point is, if you identify any of these posters, don't argue with them, it's pointless. They have beliefs, not opinions.

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different.

I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times.

Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.

I've learned not to lock main plotline progression behind puzzles; like a door or something.
But "best possible ending" will be, as well as all the best loot.
Competent evil wizards don't just leave their best shit lying around in storage cupboards with nothing but a deadbolt and a green slime to protect it.
Best thing is to give your players inscrutable hints; a map with a cypher, a key to an unknown lock, or rumours of a treasure in a jungle ziggurat.

Take a few of these elements and blend them together.
With skill, you can make your players "feel" like they solved a puzzle even when they didn't, just by giving them the components piecemeal; real puzzles should be presented alongside physical props; something tactile like a printout or a real sliding puzzle box.

That's scratching some old memories. Isn't that the Paladin that some fag in 2009 or something posted with a big sob story about how it belonged to his dad that recently passed away, and then a bunch of anons in the thread figured out that the story was bullshit cause the character sheet didn't make a lick of sense with AD&D rules?
>>
>>97218290
Almost all the problems I see people have with RPGs are communication problems. Talk with your fucking players. Note that that means listening as well. Be clear what you expect from them, what you want the focus of the game to be, what sort of tone you want, and so on. Don't expect them to read your mind.

The kobold guides and the lazy dungeon master guides are pretty bad in my opinion. The lazy dungeon master stuff started ok if a little basic, but then went into shit not even about the games.

Some calculations because I got curious.

Voyager 1 took 35 years to cross the heliopause, which is ~0.0019 light-years from the sun. An archmage that can skip space should be faster than that—let's say 10 times, so 0.35 years. The nearest star to the sun is Proxima Centauri, ~4.25 light-years away. 4.25 / 0.0019 x 0.35 = ~781 years. Exploring the nearest solar systems is unrealistic at that speed.

However, what if the archmage has connections with a higher entity or some such? If we suppose that the entity is 100 times faster than them, it can travel to Proxima Centauri in 7.81 years. Add some permanent portals and exploring the nearby solar systems seems plausible. Then, add a few million years of age behind the entity and many other similar entities and exploring the Milky Way seems plausible.

Every samefag says this excuse lol.

It's also far below the sample size of 1 game.

>By your own logic, WotC would not awkwardly weasel around a line refresh like 5.5
My logic holds then because they don't, 5.5e isn't, as we've already established, actually considered 5.5e by them, and only gameless 3aboos think it's an apt comparison to 3.5e.
In your specific case, it also makes you really fucking mad that 5e won't die and contradict yourself trying to explain how a few rule changes are the worst thing since hitler.

I think that D&D 2e/3.X/5e, Pathfinder, and Draw Steel's cosmologies all have major issues with scale and in-game practicality. Setting authors tend to get weird about scale whenever extra worlds are involved, and these are no exception.

These games' settings want to fulfill multiple conflicting desires:
• #1: One or more "flagship" fantasy worlds: the Realms/Greyhawk/Dragonlance trio in 2e, mostly just the Realms in 5e, Golarion in Pathfinder, Orden in Draw Steel.
• #2: A vast universe full of so many other worlds, so that GMs can feel cool about their own homebrew worlds somehow sharing the same universe.
• #3: Otherworldly planes full of celestials, demons, devils, fairies, and the like.
• #4: These planes are so vast that they influence many worlds simultaneously! We have heard since 2e about how the Blood War has spilled into and ruined many worlds. Pathfinder's Hell has "countless malebranche," each specifically tasked with conquering a whole world for Hell.
• #5: The adventures that take place on a "flagship" fantasy world are of super-great import. Their stakes and consequences ripple throughout even otherworldly planes.
• #6: The planes and their cities and hierarchies should be approachable in-game and understandable, not totally mind-boggling.

(Continued.)

Edna, I don't know what to tell you. Good worldbuilding is better than bad worldbuilding? People should get that a universe is a big fucking place and nothing that happens on one planet means a goddamn thing to someone 5 parsecs away?

Personally, I don't do big, universe-spanning stories with cosmic stakes, or when I do, it's way more about the people and what they're doing on a personal scale than what happens to the world around them, which is really its own kind of bleakness but sometimes that's kind of the point.

>>97227489
>>97227492
It's also a problem with numbers. 3e onwards can scale and level infinitely, but there's a point where that +1 to hit, or even +5, or +10 becomes naught but a rounding error. The Immortals Handbook books tried to create cosmic-scale D&D and had some really cool ideas, but the balance and number inflation resulted in it being hot garbage.

One big issue is that the games are designed with the idea that +21 is only a slightly better than +20 which is already in the realm of epic heroes, rather than "You're not a guy with +21 to the roll, you're one of the ten guys in the world with +21 to the roll, and there's five with +22, and one with +23, the guy with +25 is the weakest member of the Great 10 and..."

Another big problem is the d20, the bigger the core roll, the harder it is for a modifier to mean something. Though cosmic adventures are possible, the simple fact is that numbers break down at a certain point, and you end up having to do things like "My infinity is bigger than yours" or "Only paragon-tier and higher heroes can inflict damage on this monster".
>>
>>97227489
Fantasy is the last place there should be multiverse slop, all you need is one main terrestrial setting, a divine/heavenly realm, and a netherworld
>>
>>97227634
>"Only paragon-tier and higher heroes can inflict damage on this monster".
This is the norm in some settings.
>>
Multiverses and parallel timelines are the worst thing that can happen in any story for multiple reasons. Scale just happens to be one of them. These are concepts that appeal to literal retards that find the whole idea that there is more than one of a thing the most mind-blowing shit ever and genuinely believe that that makes them smarter.

If elves weren't the pinnacle of all creation than why do they get the privilege of working in Santa's workshop?

▶What is Kingdom Death?
Kingdom Death is a tabletop miniature brand stared by Adam Poots and operated by himself and his Team that later spun off into a miniature based bored game funded by two very successful Kickstarter campaigns.

▶What is Kingdom Death: Monster?
Monster is a Nightmare Horror cooperative boss battler/miniature hobby game for 1-4 players about hope in a strange world of bizarre monstrosities and perpetually darkness. Players take on the role of survivors that band together to form a settlement, fighting monsters, crafting weapons and gear, and developing their civilization to ensure survival from generation to generation.

Prologue Narration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNLc8dHv0Ac

The Game is broken up into 3 phases:
1. During your Hunt Phase your band of survivors traverse the world of KD in pursuit of their quarry.
2. After successfully tracking your quarry you will begin the Showdown Phase, where you must fell these horrific creatures in order to acquire precious resources.
3. After the battle, your survivors wander home with loot in hand to begin the Settlement Phase. Arm yourself by developing new weapons and bizarre structures to prepare for next year's hunt.
