The vidya is pretty funny in how it portrays classes. In TT, you could never have a light side Sith Assassin. They'd lose their prestige class as soon as they alignment shifted over to the light side.
>>
>>97220915
KOTOR 2's NPC alignment is wacky and really should've been more than just light/dark.
They have their default alignment, but it shifts towards/away from your PC's alignment based on their influence level. You can get a light side HK just by being his friend (or by being evil and having him hate you). It won't change anything, sadly, but it's fun to mess around with on subsequent playthroughs

It means you're good enough.
You need to coach your players to DM though.
This may necessitate just choosing whichever one is most capable of it, and kidnapping them until stockholm syndrome sets in.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

It would be odd for an in-universe map to show heretic powerbases closer to the authors location but not further away where it would matter less. I would suspect that those lands are subjected to chevauchee's sauntering out from the blockading forces of Alamut based in Georgia. Probably a lot of heretic Scythians (which sounds awesome), plus whatever naval raiders are in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, but have yet to take, or haven't attempt to take, a swath of territory and hold it successfully. Maybe there's a hidden Hellgate that's on the agenda, but only time will tell.

It'd be pretty easy. Take basically any unarmed monk build and sub out a stance for the Razortooth Goblin heritage's bite attack and you're pretty much done. Razortooth bites are d6 finesse by default, with the option of changing them into a d8 non-finesse attack with a level 1 ancestry feat, so it could work with both strength and dex monks. Since you're not using stance attacks, you could grab Ironblood Stance at level 8 if you felt like it, which would give you passive damage resistance while still allowing you to use your bite attacks. Other than that you'd pretty much be a bog-standard monk.
>>
>>97186660
Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to build an entire tabletop campaign around locked doors and NPC backstories? The Mario example you gave was just the plot of Jade Regent and that campaign was really good - up until it wasn’t Princess in Another Castle. The ability to feel forward momentum in the party’s travel is so important and this campaign is not about that at all, it’s going to be trying to get the Blue Key while giving a dilation sphere to a ghost that hates xer dad.

Pavel is her 'nuncle' because she's known him since she was a kid and he is the one that cleaned up the scene of her First Change when she slaughtered all of her first set of bandmates. There's nobody in the world she's more loyal to.
They're not related, but everybody in her neighborhood (which is heavily settled by immigrants from Poland, Hungary, and Croatia) knows him as an eccentric with business that takes him back and forth to the Old Country (Shadow Lord business, natch). He's a Philodox and handles basically all information and as mission control for the sept/caern.
He's got several death flags so I've been thinking about what song my character would dedicate to him in a performance if/when that happens

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different.

I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times.

Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.

Old fa/tg/uy here. Started with AD&D. I'm old. I have kids. I don't belong here. Been a DM for 25+ years.

Setting is all us. We make it, define it, explain it. Occasionally I'll have a player or two that I can trust to engage in the worldbuilding, but this whole trend of "shared worldbuilding" (a la Daggerheart) gets fucked fast.
You aren't responsible for "balancing" the pillars of combat, exploration, or social. Your players are responsible for that. You're responsible for setting up the scenarios and encounters that they can interact with. Don't write "plot". Straight puzzles and riddles either have to be very obvious or you need to allow the solution to be open ended (such as flexing the solution to reward player creativity). Always have a way around and tell your players there's always a way around. Don't lock something behind a single door, let them come up with solutions and - challenge them- but reward them with an outcome you didn't plan. If you want exploration you need a carrot in addition to the stick. The danger with exploration is that you use up resources and encounter danger. If you're going to do that you need to reward them with good shit when they explore. Not just treasure but reputation, titles, fame, land, contacts etc. After every session ask your players what they plan to do next session. This gets them thinking ahead and gives you a chance to plan some encounters. For mysteries, give a lot of clues and give them out easily. If the players look for something they'll find it, but it'll take some time. You can make that interesting by applying some pressure. It'll take them an hour to search the room but the guards are going to come by in two hours; which rooms do they want to search? Do they want to risk it? Do they want to fight the guards instead? Give them clues and let them put the clues together, but don't be stingy with clues.
>>
>>97218365
I guess what I mean by having more combat or intrigue focused sections is sometimes my notes tend to go for one side over another. I used to plan more stuff out, but as you said, it is a lot more fun seeing players solve issues by thinking outside the box rather than having a set solution.

I do like your advice on asking players what they want to do before the next game. That really made all the difference when I started doing it a while back.
>>
>>97218290
To echo some of what >>97218365 said, you don't need to dedicate sessions to intrigue/exploration.
If the goblins in a dungeon don't attack the PCs on sight, and instead scheme with the players to try to get them to kill their boss, that's intrigue. If the players are discovering things in the new rooms of a dungeon, that's exploration.
Intrigue is just 'talking to NPCs that have their own motives', and exploration is just 'discovery'. It's on the players to engage with that.

As far as investigation games go, that tends to work better in dedicated systems, but you basically want to flood the players with clues. Remember that the players aren't actually Sherlock Holmes, and so if you're expecting the players to make the deductions, you need to give them an appropriately difficult mystery.
You also want to avoid including a purposeful red herring. The players are already likely to pick out the wrong person as the culprit, so you don't want to muddy things further by trying to trick them on purpose.
>>
I strongly recommend reading the Kobold Guides. They're really top-notch. Check the Rchive for them.
>>
>>97218290
I've learned not to lock main plotline progression behind puzzles; like a door or something.
But "best possible ending" will be, as well as all the best loot.
Competent evil wizards don't just leave their best shit lying around in storage cupboards with nothing but a deadbolt and a green slime to protect it.
Best thing is to give your players inscrutable hints; a map with a cypher, a key to an unknown lock, or rumours of a treasure in a jungle ziggurat.

Take a few of these elements and blend them together.
With skill, you can make your players "feel" like they solved a puzzle even when they didn't, just by giving them the components piecemeal; real puzzles should be presented alongside physical props; something tactile like a printout or a real sliding puzzle box.

Without thinking about it, entirely subconsciously, you are trained by Pathfinder and D&D to safeguard your players. You are taught to coddle them! And when does this subconscious teaching happen? Not in ANY dungeon master resource. It happens before your first adventure, before your very first D20 roll.

It happens when you create characters.

In Pathfinder, character creation takes a ridiculous amount of time. I ran it for about six years, and I saw it take well over an hour, sometimes going up to two for new players. As a GM who understood the system inside and out, I could get it done in about a half hour.

Losing a character in a game with such a painstaking character creation process is absolutely devastating. As a GM, you wonder if that person will bother to make a new character, or if they will just leave, and if they do, who will go with them? Will you even have a game afterwards?

And enemy statblocks are the same way. You look at these massive text blocks that include three different saving throws, the type of hit dice, types and sub-types of creature, and perhaps most hilariously unnecessary, ALL SIX STATS. Who on earth looks at all that and dares think “I’ll make some monsters of my own!”

Please understand, I’m not saying nobody makes their own monsters. I’m saying that it is an undertaking to make a monster with a statblock like that. Figuring out saves, stats, and heaven forbid you want to get CR correct, good luck with testing out that garbage.
