>>
>>97358319
OP said level 5 players, they have level 3 spell slots. And most modern DnD DMs only run one combat encounter per adventuring day anyway, so it's not like caster fags ever have to worry about actually running out of spell slots. (Most casterfags don't even keep track of their spell slots anyway.)

Then again this all just circles back to the point >>97355007 made about DnD 5e/5.5e combat being an unfun tedious slog where any more than one combat encounter per session is honestly torture.

In 5e, Mimics only have 58 HP. Fireball does an average of 30ish points of damage if I recall correctly. Two fireballs and everything in the encounter is dead except the ghost.

>Look up Ghosts
>They have even LESS HP somehow at 45, despite being double the CR of the Mimic.
>No resistance to magical damage either

OK, yeah, two fireballs just wipes the entire encounter. To say nothing for shit like Hypnotic Pattern that could lock down the entire encounter with ONE casting if the caster is lucky. Great game-design.

it's growing on itself
new PCs gets mission to find older PCs missing (duke with important princess NPC) in same sector, still plenty of exploration left; best thing it is probably easier to fit new PCs in setting as it grows, I get that feel anyway

they've made a robot esper and an arborian smuggler. i'm gonna throw them in to a space station in the neutral zone where they have to try and stop a terrorist threat, and have that lead into a planet-hopping story similar to KOTOR, where every couple of sessions they'll collect a macguffin on one planet and fly to the next. we were supposed to play this weekend, but rescheduled to this week.
i wanna test the leveling curve from level 1 to 10, some ground combat, space combat, social stuff, a couple of dungeon crawls, get them aligned with/hunted by different factions, go from zero to hero, maybe experience a death or two.

There's different tools for different types of world building but I give the edge to Cepheus. I am biased though.
I've been using Traveller (of which Cepheus is a variant) for decades to run my own settings. The tools for creating systems and sectors will help you make a setting quickly and the tech level standardization helps you manage setting consistency at a glance.
That said, I have a copy of SWN and have been using the random tables with my Traveller games. I find it a great resource.

The thread to talk about Super Heroes/Villains/Spies/Agents/Rogues be it in spandex or not.

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

>>97354218
>that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed
nah, was always ass, you could make in old Shandalar deck with insta win first turn, Black Lotus plus Hurricane IIRC or something
causal play is still best, we had blast for 1.5y just playing 20+ semi thematic decks I kitbashed from my mediocre collection of sporadic buys gathering dust; Archenemy and other multiplayer modes of play were a blast; then everyone started buying new boosters, decks or even dedicated win custom decks and it went into shitter
>>
>>97354218
Every cardgame was more fun when you could only build your deck with the cards you had. The biggest boner I ever had playing cardgames was trying to figure out ways to combo my shitty cards midgame.

Of course it's fun to have any card at your disposition online, but to me that's only fun for deckbuilding, it completely ruins the actual game because a very limited meta will always develop, while in real life the introduction of a single card could completely change the value of others.

>TLDR: always play Cube Draft, no matter the cardgame

>I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995

Correct.
The game was 100% unironically at its best when threats were bad and counters to them were godlike. Every game going to 20+ turns as a matter of course meant it didn't matter if you won the coinflip or if your deck had a perfect curve. It was a marathon, not a sprint. You could literally skip your first couple turns and not die. Unthinkable now.

As a side note, the AI decks in Shandalar capture perfectly the tone of original Magic decks. They aren't made to win at any cost, but rather they each have some silly theme or gimmick and they try to execute it. This one tries to do the Basilisk-Lure, this one is just walls and pingers, this one tries to kill with Dingus Egg and LD... That's exactly the type of decks we had when the game was brand new and there was no tournament scene to speak of. We'd just try to do some cool thing and were happy if we got it to work in one game out of 10. Winning was strictly secondary, there was nothing to win anyway.
>>
>>97354358
>causal play is still best
That's probably the problem I had with Shandalar 2016. It felt very much designed around optimal play where every mistake is punished with immediate failure. I hated crafting a deck that was laser focused on discards and land destruction but it was the only strategy that actually worked for me.

Pretty sure that elves have some kind of learning disability to need to spend hundreds of years to learn the same thing humans can in a hundredth the time. So a headstart isn't going to mean much in terms of power overall.
>>
>>97358443
>Any that features the above settings or can run then in homebrew
They have very different rules for spellcasting, and different attributes being important. Like for instance, wisdom doesn't matter for D&D wizards (outside of saves), but it matters for channeling spells in Warhammer Fantasy. In this system anyway, elves can master any sphere of magic and learn High Magic, while human wizards are incapable of doing so.
Let alone the difference in age and also powerlevels for characters.
>>97358482
>Pretty sure that elves have some kind of learning disability to need to spend hundreds of years to learn the same thing humans can in a hundredth the time
That really isn't the case in any system or in any halfway serious setting.
Elves being dumb children for hundreds of years is a shitty anime trope.

Just out of curiosity after being a bit out of the loop for a handful of years, but is Ash still a huge dick? I remember him coming by my shop and being insufferable in how entitled he was and his "im actually a big deal" behaviour with strangers, plus how he manhandled his minis when filming emphasizing the lack of care he had for what he did
>>
What's a good alternative to points costs for models, units, and wargear? 40k tried power level that failed, the current system is too blocky without having individual model or weapon costs, OG AoS had a system based on total wound count, but then you had things like 10 skavenslaves being equal in points to a dark elf dragon. Smaller games like Halo Flashpoint work on an equal total model count, but that mostly works because of the similarity of the single models.

What are some other ways to balance different factions, units, and wargear? What steps can you take to make sure everything unit isn't taking every single upgrade available to them without having to resort to an in-depth points system?
