How do you guys handle bartering, especially when PCs are selling their spoils?
>>97269066I try to be careful with bartering/haggling because it tends to take a disproportionate amount of time relative to the number of players who are able to get actively involved. Unless the entire party really enjoys that sort of thing or it's a campaign heavily themed around mercantile exchanges, a simple speech check to try and swing the numbers 5-10% in their favor is about as much time I'm willing to give it. For barter in particular it depends heavily on what the other person actually needs i.e. mudfarmer doesn't need a +1 warhammer and wouldn't trade it for provisions, but might need a few hours hard labor. Overall though more than verisimilitude or even consistency, I value pace of play. You're the DM, if you gave them a bunch of vendor trash it's on you to give them access to a vendor. It's a lot easier to justify a chance encounter with a wandering caravan willing to offload their shit than it is to sit for 10 minutes of RP while Tordek tries to convince someone in shitfuck nowhere that these potions of frost resistance are priced to move.
