Those are ~2019 and ~2021 respectively, where TOSS is dominated by 4 decks while Branded/DIFO has a better spread. Only problem with TOSS is that it falls under Master Rule 4's restrictions, so a lot of communities that run it will also have those restrictions (they are not good and force you to use link monsters if you want to touch your extra deck).Anyway, Branded/DIFO is a good halfway point since it has some of the old design philosophies in motion while moving towards newer design choices, and TOSS is alright if you want a solved meta to help break the ice for you.

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session. Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.>4e books are ~10-15$ now. Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch. I think no one but practitioners should know exactly HOW magic works (and I mean the specific effect desired by the magic-user) and no one should know WHY ir works (but different traditions and cultures should have their own beliefs and explanations). This should be enough for the players and GM to inform the roleplay.As a game resource, spells should be rare enough to be special but available enough to be considered useful.Another aspect I very much enjoy is increased randomization of effects. Should a character choose to relinquish control of the effect (or forced to do by circunstance), shenanigans ensue, which is always entertaining.
