Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle. If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

>>97287235Actively fighting against the DM's previous guidance. If I told you that your characters are from a kingdom that's deeply superstitious and has outlawed spellcasting so you should roll up martial characters, and you show up with a bladesinger who's "totally just a normal swordsman...for all he knows *wink wink*", it goes in the trash. No, he doesn't "just not realize he's the one doing things", wizards learn magic through study. You were told to roll a martial character and actively chose not to.If I told you that the setting has a homebrew pantheon and here's the list of gods, and you show up with a cleric of Pelor, he's getting binned. No, he isn't "just a crazy kook who worships a made-up god...or, at least, that's what everyone ELSE thinks", divine power comes from the deities that actually exist. You were told the constraints of the setting and actively chose to ignore them.Shit like that. I'll work with players to massage silly concepts into something that makes in-universe sense, I'll whip up some new homebrew material to cover corner cases in which you have a solid concept but the mechanics aren't quite clicking, but the point at which you're either ignoring me or deliberately trying to provoke me is the point at which I don't feel like it's worth my time to do either.
>>97287338>The fuck kind of argument is this supposed to be?"Stop complaining about small problems when there's far bigger problems">>97287356>True Strike? You basically always have INT for your attacks. Extra Attack would make only one of your attacks use non-INT when you're not in Bladesong.Opportunity attacks exist. And again, there's still no reason to not use a rapier. You haven't said anything the Bladesinger loses by using a rapier instead of a longsword.>>97287323>They undermine the entire point of having stats in the first place, replacing the different use cases with "just use your single core stat for everything"That's a good argument. And there are plenty of good arguments for removing the feature and those like it. Game balance just isn't one of them.
>>97287289>What would you count as interesting or vice versa?Needs to fit tone and theme. No joke characters in serious campaign. No overloaded demon shadow fey half-ogres aasimars. No transpose from some other work of fiction.Needs to have something interesting that can be played and makes a character and interacts with the world to generate situations and brings something to the table, dm, and other players. No Johnny Adventurer Blankface McMyself The Player Here To Clear Content. Even if it's a wooden leg or fear of water or a bounty on your head, whatever. Your "grappling build" may be the reason you wanna play it, but it's not interesting to anyone else.Needs a goal for adventuring that isnt "i wanna level up" or "I wanna become more powerful". Adventuring into tombs and crypts and helping towns with threats is a job that is taken out of NECESSITY, not a casual occupation. Wanna be a powerful mage? study in the academy. Wanna be rich? Open a shop. The character needs to be moved by this other goal to adventure. "I wanna do this, therefore helping the town guard/slaying the monster for money/escorting the merchant/etc will get me closer to that goal". I fucking hate "for no reason at all I decided to walk into danger"

>>97287056>quick random encountersQuick random encounters are shit. If there's no chance of the party losing then you should either handwave the fight or not have it at all. Its the same as having players roll for shit that has 0 consequences for failure.
>>97287040Sorry, I should have clarified better that I would not be running ALL of seasons 8-12 but using them as guidelines and idea resources to run the short campaign. As for how long, I was thinking maybe from levels 1 to 5. Some of the players are major skeptics to the systems (one player in particular) but they have agreed that if I were to run they would play but only for a short campaign to get a feel for how the system works and whether "it's as bad as people say" basically.
>>97287089You do multiple ~15 min quick fights more for power fantasy and resource attrition. Blasting through a small pack of weak mooks with at-wills and maybe an encounter power lets the PCs feel strong while giving them a few nicks and bruises to eat away the their healing surges. This actually heightens feelings of progression and they also give bigger fights a greater sense of gravitas and grandeur compared to every fight being a 1+ hour tactical slog.
>>97287194>resource attritionThat only works if you prevent them from resting between fights. Otherwise all they're realistically losing is a couple healing surges which is incredibly marginal.
>>97287218As long as they are not trying to take long rests the minor healing surge attrition/rationing is the point. The idea is to get about 6 different encounters in between long rests rather than the 1 or 2 fights per long rest rhythm that 4e usually ended up with.

>>97287189>Is Liren not in high school anymore? He is still in high school, I had him at 17-18 years old, right at the end of school. He doesn't have perfect attendance and cares more about his part-time job at an antique store, he's smart/strange enough that exams are not a problem even if he doesn't follow the lessons.>What was the arranged marriage originally for?Liren comes from a shrine family with a lot of traditions, one of those was an aranged marriage, he was supposed to be married off to someone that could benefit the shrine. That could have been a pretty wide category of people, going from someone from another shrine family and as such with spiritual power and training, to more material reasons like just being rich or being the heir of an exceptional crafstsman. Liren being what he is never cared about it, and on his side there is no family left that would try to enforce it since they are all either dead or ran away, but the same could not be true for the other side and the engagement is still technically active sine nobody bothered to cancel it. Despite not being interested in the marriage part of it he would still want to investigate it because it's a "connection" and he's kinda obsessed with those.Out of character it just looked like a more interesting version of childhood friend/moon's love to have a hook to something still in Kageoka, and felt fitting for his background. I was told it's not that fitting for the current cast, and looking at it I kinda aggree, there are not many good candidates for it, so the story arc wouldn't really work in that case. I wasn't baiting for a ship, it was probably gonna end in friendship rather than romance, unless somehow the other anon had different plans but I don't see how that could happen. I could try to make it work but it doesn't feel worth it, now that I look at it while I don't have a fever it clearly feels like romance bait and I don't feel like forcing it would make sense.

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms). However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net. This set, which is no where near finished includes>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles>some English/Welsh fairy tales>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art). I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward. Also all art is public domain. I'm mainly posting here for feedback. Some will be art recommendations, flavor text (especially sourced) will be always welcomed.Comment too long. Red Knights aren't exactly common, but are a recurring theme in the romances. Normally used as a stepping stone or early enemy. Naturally I had to include one in the set.

Pretty cool cards OP. Some wording issues but I can try to go through those later if you want. Ql>>97283027This one's OP and should at least require a tap on his part. Look at Kalitas Blood chief of Ghet for reference.
Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.
>>97283948If they genuinely wanted to discuss the game, they should probably post something other than obvious hollow ad copy in the op.
>>97284096I think it says a lot more about you and your play group than it does the game that you see abstract tag mechanics and think "obviously this is going to result in an argument."

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs! Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.
