I'm of the belief that Mulcharmies have balanced the winrate of going second but did so in a way that lowers the overall skill expression in the game.

I can't think offhand of when legacy characters get ignored by fans, or when they weren't being pushed by a company. How many people pick Kaya over Liliana? Or Alexis over Téa? Talking pure numbers though, not the guy who is stubborn about what he likes. Good for him

I run a post apocalyptic mecha setting and it's pretty comfy. There is still civilization in a few places but the world is ravaged after a huge world war and people mostly band together to fight monsters. There's a lot of introspection and solitude that lets characters really take a breath because they visit a lot of places that were once clearly filled with people everywhere

...It's literally written there in black and white in Realms of Chaos: The Lost and The Damned, page 174-175
>The Emperor is over 50,000 years old.
>The Emperor is the collective incarnation of every one of the ancient Stone Age psyker-shamans, who committed suicide to pool their entire power and collective wisdom, honed over millions of years of reincarnations, into a single being that could stand against the rise of Chaos.

Retards.

BVILT FOR BIG BLOODTHIRSTER COCK
>>
The emperor being immortal and responsible for humanity's progress since pre-history is spin written by a fanatical church. He wasn't 10 feet tall, the most powerful psyker ever etc. that's just how his legend has grown over the 10k years since he fell.

Next you'll act like the primarchs were actually his "sons" and not just warlords he recruited and put in charge of the legions during the crusades. Probably with some obviously bullshit, overly complex backstory involving teleportation and time dilation to explain the hundreds of years difference in ages of some of them.

4e's sub model was hilariously successful and you'd know if you weren't getting made up infographics from PFG
>>
>>97224489
4e's online tools and plans for a VTT and further products fell apart because of a murder-suicide.
>>
>>97224529
lol, you have zero info on anything that happened post release. 4e's sub model included tons of magazine style micro supplements being released all the time, feeding into the most robust character builder at the time. The online tools also served as a much better resource than the old SRDs, including easily printable monster cards that auto-calculated and scaled to level, which were also easily customizable. Every new book also fed directly into this model and so you have this vast repository of things to easily reference and create if you were subbed Like, people loved the crazy convenience of the system and it was a hell of a deal for the average guy. You don't have to like the game, but fucking know what you're talking about.
>>
>>97224577
D&D insider was a decent idea and it was the blueprint for D&D Beyond, more or less, but "hilariously successful" in terms of money making is not remotely true.

This /biz/ routine you keep doing just leads me to ask one thing of you: Post hands.
>>
>>97224605
NTA but DDI could be tracked on the lowball by the D&D Insider group in WotC's community. This was a lowball because you also had to have a community account registered to it (not necessary). In 2013 at one point it had grown to a 81k userbase, with a monthly sub of minimum 10 bucks. Calculate that over a year and you have over 9 million, and 2013 was a slow year because literally no new books came out. I don't know what to tell you except that's crazy revenue on an off year, totally unseen in the industry before that.

Seriously, though. Stop playing. Do not purchase any product. If you really must play, make Cube with whatever cards you already have. Bunker down /here/ if you have to. The game as you knew it is never coming back. However, its current course is not sustainable. Eventually they'll run out of recognizable IPs. Eventually they will fuck up even EDH. It may be a few years until that happens. But when it does, be there to pick up the pieces.

Magic must be hurt to be saved. Only proxies until they get their act together.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

>>

Unironically the best part of 10th was when marines had Armour of Contempt. It made marine armour feel significant against small arms fire.

That being said, too many attacks, too much AP, too high strength for basic cheap troops in 9th was a nightmare. Orks were balanced good though.

The sad thing is the core faction identities were well done, with interesting and varied mechanics. It was the inflation of the basic statline that was a major issue.

8th ed statlines with 9th ed faction rules could do the trick

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

I have upsetting news for you. He was probably one of the most conventionally attractive, hygienic and personable players there.
However he WAS short, is the only upside I can report.

His MO appeared to be roping you into a false sense of pleasant-gaming-ness and asking for little things in the spirit of a "good game" but they'd get to be progressively more ludicrous asks. But because you gave the last thing to him, and this other thing wasn't that much worse, and the guy's nice, why not?
He just overplayed his hand against me by claiming terrain doesn't exist unless both players agree to it or whatever

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

I need some help and I can't post too much because my GM might be lurking here (High tech/Horror):
Last session, one of our party members bungled something up and we ended up teleporting to random places in the world
I ended up dumped 60 miles off the coast in the middle of the ocean with naught but the clothes on my skin.
What can I expect to do other than starting to make a new sheet?
>>
>>97222128
In what way is HP magic 'soft'? It doesn't seem flexible at all; each spell does a very specific thing.
The only magic system which seems like a good fit is advantage-based a la Chinese Elemental Powers or Psionic Powers, since there isn't any real 'cost' in either prep or recovery.

>>97221682
I like it, but what would the SP stand for?

>>97222935
I don't think any are absolutely 'must read' but:
Alternate Guns Specialities and Techniques (3/65) neatens up the guns skill.
Opus Longa, Pugna Brevis (3/120) is good for cinematic pacing.
The Thrill of the Chase (3/112) expands the chase rules.
GURPS Fathoms Five (3/26) is essential if you want any scenes with a lot of water.
Various vehicle articles, of which Highway Stars (4/2) is probably the best.
For a globe-trotting game, one of the language articles. Colorless Green Ideas Sleep Furiously (3/44) is OK, but I'm sure there was an even better one for cinematic games which I can't remember the name of.

2nd time on Planto and I can see more of where "Loyang the Dice game" was the foundation and should have remain because this is just an absolute mess of a game. Almost audacious even in how little regard it has to table space, plausible but still unnecessary subsystems, and pasted on theme. Go to Mutantpedia (the Warzone/Mutant Chronicles wiki). Find the issues of Chronicles From the Warzone and Chronicles magazine. You can literally watch the process happening in real time as the FAQ section progresses. It was happening at the same time (1997-1999) and roughly the same pace in 40k, Clan War, and several other games. BattleTech had the same thing start to happen a few years earlier in ~1993-1995, but a mix of brutal pushback from the rest of the community and the type of organized play events that were happening largely killed it off. Everyone agreed that tournaments were fucking cancer and consigned them to the Bloodname melees at GenCon, the other events all stayed story-related or were shits-and-giggles stuff like Masters and Minions

6E was the "erm akshually you have to declare a charge before you measure" edition

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

Not necessary if you are planning on playing only with your friend.
But the core set does contain some stuff you'll need when playing against anyone else like objective cards, dice, scoreboard, measuring/movement tools and terrain.
But if the guy you play against has a core set, just grab 2 boxes and you are good to go. You can buy dice, terrain, objective cards and movement/range rulers separately anyway.
> I want to avoid another dead-end buy-in like Legions
Sorry to hear. I'm struggling to get some real Legion games in myself, only starter games to try and get people to buy into Legion.
