You're welcome. I'd start by getting 20 grave guards, 20 skellies or zombies (your preference), 5 blood knights, 5 wolves and/or 3 fell bats and a wight lord, a vampire and a necro on foot.
That should be almost exactly 1000 points and will give you a well rounded and very good army to play the game with and see what you like and don't like.

Why did they fumble making a good licensed AtLA TTRPGame? The setting was perfect for it.

Some of the stuff in this thread, man.
Yeah Avatar is about its characters, they're a big part of the appeal. But it's still a martial arts show, and when people say they want an Avatar game you fucking know they're talking about wanting to be a Kyoshi warrior, a bloodbender or being a Dai Li agent shooting rock gloves, or a chi blocker. Any other game could be about being the Comic Relief or Angsty Teen. You could just rewatch the show if you want the same characters.
It's like wanting a Star Wars game and you roleplay a dysfunctional dad and siblings kissing each other, and the spaceships and lasers and aliens are an after thought.

And while not knowing for sure how many episodes they had to work with certainly didn't help, there are enough problems with some of the core premises and characters that can't be explained by that, and in some cases are more baffling when knowing that they have limited episodes.

Deciding that Korra would be a stubborn hothead but having her grow up in a sheltered monastery is an easy example. Just have her be from Republic City itself. She can learn elements at a young age because there's other kids in the neighborhood of all elements. She can be obsessed with pro-bending because she's in the city that came up with it. And she has more reason to care about the city's politics.
That's a decision that would have gotten made before they knew how many episodes they had, and so it can't be blamed on the network.

I've seen it discussed in a /co/ fanfic thread she should've been a street kid that learned on her own, she feels much more like a local.

Anyways, the original Avatar had moments where they didn't know if they were gonna get more episodes. But they kept trucking along without compromising the plot. Episode 13, The Blue Spirit, was almost the series finale. I know people hate cliffhangers, but it's preferable than fucking up the story.

There's a module involving the plans of the first FN tank during Sozin's era, and apparently primitive Chinese style handcannons were a thing once.
I think that's neat. The creators did care about the setting and lore at least.

Would you really need that kind of accuracy in the context of a battlefield? If you miss one guy charging you, there's probably still pretty good odds you'll hit one of the guys beside him, or behind him. And with the kind of power that crossbows had, any kind of hit is doing something. And it's not just going to be one guy with a crossbow firing - there's a whole bunch.

If you're up on a wall shooting down between . . . I forget the name of those little gaps specifically for it . . . you're almost shooting fish in a barrel, which is even better than shooting at a mass of enemies running straight at you.

Although I suppose you could make the counter argument that a few minutes of being shown how to use a crossbow will just go completely out of my head when there's hundreds or thousands of guys running at me and shouting with pointy objects they intend to stab me with. That's a lot more dangerous than people shooting crossbows out of hunting blinds or helicopters.

I can answer for gurps. The good ones take a while to reload, the quick ones don’t do too much damage. This doesn’t make them bad, just niche for games focused around short range skirmish combat.
How do we make them better? Give more combat encounters at ranges where a 10 second reload isn’t the entire battle. Use a secondary weapon and treat the crossbow as an opener.

Bullshit. In Basic if your PC have Str18 you can reload a heavy crossbow every turn, because you're chad who don't need a goat's leg or a crank.
Also 3~3.5e it's not bad. Light is a move action so if you're not forced to move and in a good position you're better off than most starting archers (pre-lv9).

I'd be interested to see that kind of test repeated with the mail over a ballistic dummy like you can see guntubers like, say, Garand Thumb or Kentucky Ballistics use (I'm sure there's many more, but I'm just passingly familiar with those two).

I'm somewhat skeptical as to whether chainmail produced with period accurate material and labour would perform as well as those tested - I'm going to be honest I just watched the part where they shot at the dummies and didn't go through the section where he rated them 1 to 3 on how historically accurate the pieces were, just looked at the score card at the end where a lot of them get a 0 - and maybe I should've listened because I wonder if these pieces would represent 'premium' pieces. He probably answers both questions.

Anyway, thank for reading my blog. I concede I have a lot of misconceptions and this video helped dissuade me on them.

MTG, DnD and Warhammer are actually good for the hobby. They get new people started in this hobby and they keep the trend chasers contained and away from the rest of the hobby.

Appealing to the normie masses is a necessary evil in order to keep what you love afloat. Even if it comes with the negative baggage of doing so.

yes, obviously, left looks better than right, no one is going to disagree with that. but when playing a GAME, right is obviously going to be a funner experience for BOTH sides, just look at the utter lack of balance in the left terrain set up. the near side has to traverse a river and then fight through open fields while the far side immediately gets access to most the hard cover of buildings on the map and on top of that gets the hedgerows overlooking the open fields. its blatantly not fair and poorly set up.

ok then, how do you balance that? how do you know how many points to allocate to balance out the terrain advantage? double? triple? what if thats too much and now the attacker has the distinct advantage? its way too much trouble to figure out. thats why tourney tables will always provide the better gameplay experience for BOTH sides. GAMEplay. WarGAMES. These are GAMES. A good game needs to be fun for all involved. It is not fun when one side has an inherent advantage over the other. There is a reason why 40k tournaments are by and far the most popular wargaming events and playstyle over every single alternative.

Generally speaking if nothing gets in the way of painting something else you're better off assembling first and painting second. If something will be clearly visible in the end but a complete arse to paint once everything's been assembled then you paint that first and glue it on later. Sometimes people like keeping things like heads separate for painting even if it can be easily reached on the model. Yeah plus you don't sprinkle grass, you either use an applicator or grab big tufts and stick them tight onto the glue.
What I do for leaves is drop a bunch of them on the glue and gently push them flat with a small spatula.
But yeah a couple layers look way better than one.

Thinking on it, I think I would have it that you would draw a single tactics card when you get a knight badge. The card stays tied to that specific badge, so you always have that tactic available with that badges. More knight enemies, more knight badges, more tactics available. It's still randomized, but locked in for the campaign instead of random every single fight, and if you get a tactic that's bad for the monster you want to hunt, you just don't bring the badge.
