My preference there has been Call of Cthulhu, just because I tend to find new players have an easier time with a modern setting.But really the only reason to avoid 5e is for a few of the bad habits it can cause. Older editions aren't out of the question, but I'd sooner recommend that you find a system that piques your interest thematically. Like cyberpunk? Go on itch and find some shitty cyberpunk games. Want space? Stars without number. Want a fantasy game? There's a billion of them.
