My wife and I finally figured out a balanced way to play drunk magic.

>You may take an ( already poured ) shot of a liqour of your choice, corresponding to the right color, to pay for a colored mana cost I.E. taking a shot of fireball to pay for one red mana.
>Liqour cannot be drunk to pay colorless mana costs.
>During your upkeep, you may choose one color of mana to pour one shot of. >You may only have one poured, undrunk shot of mana at any time.
>Shots corresponding to a mana color cannot be substituted. A red shot for example cannot be used to pay for blue, or vice versa.

I might have written the rules in a way that makes it less clear, but basicaly you get access to one liqour shot at any time and you can take that shot at any time to pay for one colored mana cost. You can only pour one shot a turn, during your upkeep. That shot stays on the board until you use it. So if you haven't spent last turns mana shot on your current upkeep, you cant pour a new shot.

It leads to some funky shit.

A thread for talking about players doing dumb shit and acting like retards.

>Be me
>Running short campaigns for new groups at the LGS
>Players are all tasked with defending some random hamlet in a backwater province from bandits that are planning to sack it and haul everyone off into slavery
>First group is (rightly) terrified of a fair fight
>Lures the bandits into an ambush by getting help from a neighboring village
>raid their camp after they retreat and destroy the group
>Second group tries brute force
>Roll up on the bandit camp directly and alone
>Talk their way into meeting with the leader when they rushed him
>Catch him offguard
>Are also playing optimized characters
>Slaughter him and his guards and convince half of the bandit group to work for them, rest scatter
>The third group

Sharing useful wisdom that has helped me run more satisfying games. Trying to share some less common advice. These are my opinions and techniques that have helped me. I’d love to hear what has worked for other /tg/ DMs.

1. Time pressure- adding time pressure through use of "clocks" including real life clocks is incredibly helpful to add pressure and tension to a scenario. Giving players choices but not enough time to make every choice adds meaning to those choices. Time pressure in combat is a contentious, but powerful tool to discuss with your players. Forcing a decision in seconds makes combat stressful and - when players are on board- fun (in anticipation of the common objection: if the players don’t make a choice in combat, I usually come back to them before round end, I never have them “just stand there”. Remember to assume character competency).

2- The GM-ing engine- It's okay to front load content and prepare a few different rail-roady hooks in the first few sessions. Being a GM is like starting one of those old prop engines with a winch. It takes a while for the pistons (players) to kick into gear. Once they do, after a few sessions, all you need to do is apply gas. Solve the tavern problem by figuring out how characters know each other prior to the first session.

3- Immersion means impact- After a session, reflect on how the player choices affected the world (for good or ill), try to let the ripple of that effect emerge in the next session. Players that feel like they change the world around them invest in it.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

(Continued.)

The core rulebook specifically suggests having everyone tied to the same starting conspiracy. This is why there is a rule for upgrading a conspiracy based on how many Renegade PCs oppose it. The Devoted Companion suggests much the same for Devoted PC games.

If conspiracies still are not your thing, Black Vans offers options for removing conspiracies in favor of other antagonistic plot devices. The high fantasy, post-apocalypse, and superhero emergence genres are good examples of this.

Touchstones can be a lot to keep track of, true. Shallow Graves and Black Vans both offer advice on this. If this still is not good enough, Black Vans gives options for removing Touchstones in favor of more conventional motivations, like Virtues, Vices, and three Aspirations.
>>
>>97286712
the conspiracies are a graph of connected people you need to take down?
>>
>>97287020

If you are playing a default Renegade game (as opposed to a Devoted game) and are not using any of the variant genres, yes. I mention some examples here >>97217964

The variant genres do away with conspiracies or heavily modify them. For example, in the space opera genre, the conspiracy rules are used to represent space empires, which the PCs can topple.
>>
>>97287119
so if you were to play in one piece you could have a conspiracy on each island which would be the driver of the plot?
>>
>>97287250

Something like that, sure. The World Government would be a much more overarching conspiracy at Standing 9 or 10.

One Piece is reasonably close to the high fantasy genre, though, so you could simply use the variant rules Black Vans' high fantasy subchapter. They replace conspiracies with a framework of epic quests.

I am looking for a game that is a mix between HeroQuest and Battletech. In that it is a duel type game rather than a dungeon crawler, movement is hex based, there are items and objects you can pick up and interact with, and there are fixed action points per character deployed, and each action a character takes costs action points. Is there anything you would personally recommend that sounds like this, or do I have to homebrew such a system myself?
>>
>>97286252
Are you looking for a specific existing game, or asking if there is a game that satisfies your highly specific criteria?
If it's the former, I unironically recommend searching by mechanics on BGG. As shitty as the site has became, the search is still great.
>>
>>97286252
Don't play it, just get kits for other games sometimes but its suppose to be good-to-decent for a current era specialist game. Sounds like it does what you're looking for.

I'm working on an alchemist class and I'm curious:

1. Would you find it more interesting if there were (1) escalating versions of alchemist's fire, dealing 2d6, 3d6, 4d6, etc. or (2) escalating damage items with escalating prices / craft DCs, but they did different damage types instead, or (3) both? Basically if you played an alchemist it'd be like bombs from Pathfinder, except you actually crafted them, but instead of always dealing fire damage, it'd be a set-in-stone thing that the 2d6 ones did, say, electricty, the 3d6 ones did cold, the 4d6 ones did half-fire-half-acid, or something like that.

2. How overpowered would it be for a 15th level character to be able to create potions of spells with a range of personal? They also would be able to make potions of spells level 1 to 9, from a limited number of spells "known" for the purposes of making potions out of them. But this would allow them to make potions of any personal-range spell they chose to learn. How broken would this be?

Rolled a dread wraith from PF1 as a random encounter for a night time mission PCs are planning to take.
Trying to decide how start it off and how to fight
>Option 1
Wraith is smart: hides in the ground on the road, uses life sense to do spring attack as they get in range and hides back into the ground.
Keeps doing that, targets them one by one and PCs can only fight back with readied actions
>Option 2
Wraith is smart and bloodthirsty: like 1 except rather than hide it flies up above the group, uses its Sense Motive 23 and Spot 23 to id the weakest members of the group and than proceeds to spring attack going for the weakest, trying to generate more spawn
>Option 3
Wraith is confident and doesn't bother hiding in ambush because its the scariest thing in the area and it got no one to hide from and none can outrun it, so it hunts in the open. Comes at them fast, does spring attack from the air.
>Option 4
wraith is cocky, like 3 except it doesn't try go for the weakest first, goes at random to spread the misery around
>Option 5
wraith is confident but lazy, like 3 but goes after mounts first because it doesn't want the party to try and separate and run
>option 6
wraith is playful, like 1, only pick targets randomly each time

Trench Raiding With The Lads Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?

Not him, but I disagree.
If we're looking at this from the perspective of the orc he just got hit by some kind of flashbang. He comes out, sees an armored foe before him, and then looks past that foe to some other guy behind some houses and decides to attack him instead. And if he's a " berserker" doesn't that indicate someone that brawls the first enemy closest to him?
If I'm the DM of this game and I see a player clearly indicate he's moving to the far back in cover with a bow, the enemies just got surprised by a flashbang, and another player is stepping up to the front to challenge the enemy, I'm likely not going to be playing orcs as 140 IQ enemies who swiftly look at the cleric and determine that's the tank while looking at the rogue and going "Obviously we must target that one with the lower armor and can do sneak attack."
>>
>>97287333
Trips of truth.
I'd just like to add that the 5 minutes pause is a pretty good indicator that the "familiar" came into existence only to justify targeting sneaky anon instead of the frontliner.
>>
>>97287333
>If we're looking at this from the perspective of the orc he just got hit by some kind of flashbang. He comes out, sees an armored foe before him, and then looks past that foe to some other guy behind some houses and decides to attack him instead.
This Orc, who by OPs description was unaffected by the flashbang (unlike his buddies who DON'T attack OP) decided to use a ranged attack on the rogue that's sitting in the back who's squishier and more vulnerable. Which is quite reasonable.
>And if he's a " berserker"
That's OP's description. We don't know what this Orc actually was or how he might have actually been described.
Presumably this is an Orc with a level or several in Barbarian, and nothing about Barbarian Rage or anything related to it says you must act irrationally and foolishly or takes away tactical control from your character.

The rest of your post is just backseat DMing (And kind of retarded DMing at that. Even a dumb animal could tell the difference between a squishy target and a tough one) which I don't think is really worth addressing.

If the DM had all the Orcs present immediately focus down the Rogue like a telepathically coordinated squad of combat geniuses, I think he'd be fair to call bullshit. But he hit him with one (1) attack from an Orc that was unaffected by a flash bomb and clearly more experienced than the rest of the Orcs, and yet OP decided to bitch and moan even though this had zero real consequences. That makes OP a faggot, even if the rest of what his DM did was retarded.
>>
>>97287432
I don't know what alternative is worse. That you're genuinely defending bad GMing or that you put so much effort into trolling.
>>

>No argument, false dichotomy
It seems to me like you're the bad DM here, anon. as you see everything someone does as bad or good with no in between. You're a bad player too since you're the type who sits there brooding, "I could run this session so much better, I'd NEVER let my character take damage if I were the DM..."

now there's a weird divide between the clean flesh of mortals and the relatively over"designed" ones of demons

Old Marvel comics are as corny as you can get, and it's Star Wars we're talking about. How did you not hear about Jaxxon before?

Also once you're done come back and tell us if there's anything salvageable in those comics.

The woman in the picture is too well fed for Ventress. Her near death gaunt features are a big part of her appearance. that's what looks wrong.

what? I think you're trying to apply features from TCW artstyle into a realistic depiction

dooku doesn't have a beard that looks like the front of a train in live action afterall, so ventress wouldn't look like a stick, she'd just be thin and mostly athletic (as thats a point brought up in dark disciple)

Personally I think she looks barrel-chested compared to how Ventress should. Arms, shoulders, the whole upper torso too thick

could just be the outfit or more likely just the artists style
what i'm mainly talking about though is the face, as ventress does not currently have a live action depiction the artist would have to make up a face (there is existing "realistic" art however), but what i'm saying is that the face reminds me of someone but I cannot place who it reminds me of
