Now that the dust has settled, is it the D&D killer it was hyped up to be?
>>97824851>Can someone explain to me why it's bad?No, because it's pretty good. The mechanics are pretty superfluous. You have hope and fear metacurrency that players and dm get. You succeed and fail with hope and fear, and you're obligated to describe some "yes or no and" on the spot. Nobody is an actor with lots of experience so most tables will just ignore that core conceit of the system. When you ignore that stuff, you think why aren't we just playing D&D.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128Comment too long. >>97827932No one said you did call me names so that's a moot point. What you did was tell that other anon that I was probably wrong about allosaurs being featherless and insinuated it was because I was being contrary for the sake of being contrary. With no other reason offered for saying this, only lumping me in with the no-feathers crowd despite me having listed multiple taxa I know to be feathered, I deemed your reasoning irrational. It sounds like that /an/ anon's posts, or more likely your thoughts about the posts, are causing you some distress. I'd sooner use this site less than feel harangued on it. Touch grass is used as an attack but it's also good advice. I'm going to do it myself, not because I'm feeling harangued but don't want to derail the thread more.>>97827407As the only player so far, and a very good one, I am putting the final answer before I off and touch grass. I doubt I'll be back in this thread before dies and it wouldn't be fair not to give you an answer. The carnivore is Baryonyx walkeri. Its jaw is a long and slender piscivorous jaw, unsuited for hunting large terrestrial prey, excellent for fish or scavenging. Spinosaurus aegyptiacus also had a long jaw but it was much larger than B. walkeri so could easily predate adult hadrosaur-sized prey. It's not a big thing in itself but it stood out to me when I saw the photo.
Long time MtG player (17 years?) and with what's happening to the game rn, i don't really have much interest in any of the new sets. Sorcery looks like it could maybe scratch that itch. The art is fantastic and reminds me of legacy MtG art. Anybody here play?I watched a few overview vids, but I'm curious how the actual gameplay goes. For someone who plays mostly EDH, are there any similarities? Is it usually a 2 player match? How long are the matches usually? Is it as much of a money pit as MtG?Convinced a few of my MtG friends to give it a shot based off of the art alone. Just need an idea of what I'm up against in terms of learning curve.
>>97821727If you don't mind a dead game, Mage Wars Arena is pretty dope and you can usually get the complete thing for a decent price.
>>97821717The water decks are pretty dominant right now, but there's still a lot of competitive builds, also people are still trying to figure out what works in general. Cards like Atlantean Fate can be pretty brutal.
Sorcery is based just for printing these two cards alone.

Previous thread: >>97680129GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.TQ: what's your least favorite disadvantage for a player to take?
>>97823845The issue is that GURPS is a turn based rpg and doesn't really represent how difficult it'd be to carefully aim for the head or even retaliate against someone foaming at the mouth and wailing in you, which would be quite overwhelming. Except AoA just gives you a +4 to your own hit chance and in turn you're completely defenseless. The opponent just parries or dodges your AoA and easily attacks back.Ye olde zerkers had shields and defended themselves, they weren't completely careless and easily headshotted.

>>97828229the idea that the reception to Avatar was bad is also something that only exists because of extreme vocal minoritiesthe most common thing people took away from the first movie is that it was gorgeous, people might not have liked the characters much but they did like the world and how it was presentedand yes that means even among the general moviegoing audience there was a lot of sympathy for the Na'vi, mostly because the world was so pretty and the corporate dickbags in that movie were trying to destroy the pretty world Quaritch was badass sure, and most people took it away like that, but he was also side-by-side and for most of the movie taking orders from a corporate slimeball with exactly 0 fans And it's not like villains being badass has ever stopped them from being villains
