>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

Low imagination largely.
That being said, there could be other factors like a lack of mission variety or aids for making campaigns that while don't make such activity impossible, don't act to encourage more gameplay. Historicals have all the historical conflicts to draw on for material, and while scifi and fantasy gaming can also draw on those conflicts as inspiration, and should, it seems like this approach is becoming less common over time.
Other option is bad design that has fairly specific units being the best choice in all cases enough that it cuts down on game variation.
>>
>>97709039
IMO if the game sucks you still get a bunch of small scale scifi dudes to use for any mini agnostic scifi game you'd wanna play
>>
>>97709074
When they did the reveal video the models they showed looked amazing and generic enough for anything as you say. It looks like a real time strategy game in real life with so many unit types at that scale.

Is there a reason people are opposed to using AI to look up rules and traits and things? It's so much quicker and more useful than grabbing the books, checking the index, and so on. Three times now people have scoffed at using AI and left my scratching my head.

Thread title. In brief, I had a player who said that he couldn't continue playing unless I could confirm that his PC wouldn't be killed.
I told him "That's up to you, if you get unlucky your PC could indeed die" and he insisted that his PC's death would sort of ruin the plan he had for him. I said "Yes, that's what

Seems like player and GM talking about their expectations of the eventually upcoming game is reasonable.
Getting pissed about it on /tg/ seems childish.
And in general I have to agree with >>97707584 for the most part. Death doesn't have to be the only outcome of a failed combat encounter. Especially if you play something other than fast and loose dungeon delve tactics where a new character is made in a few minutes.

If you set up your group for a grand adventure and campaign where their backstories and characters matter by going from zero to hero, then it is absolutely a legit stance to keep character death to a minimum or even off the table.
Conan got captured like a retard in his movie. As a GM you could of course have random mooks slit his throat in a dogpile. Or you could have the evil wizard give him an evil speach, embarrass and wound him further, then cast him out like the defeated dog he is. Movies do it all the time and there is no reason why a GM can't do the same since he has all the power in his hand.

Does this mean you should let PCs off the hook when players insist on retarded shit like: "My fresh character makes a dive down the 50 feet steep cliff on rocky terrain!" expecting to stay alive? No. Of course not. I have to assume you play with actually people and not walking strawman arguments. Should this situation still occour you can always say: "No. That would kill your character, which you stated, you don't want to happen. Try something else."
It's really that easy.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>Otherwise, actively try to kill your players
That's plebbit-tier levels of retardation, showing that you don't understand anything about the OSR nor about DMing.

I won't explain the OSR part because you're clearly too retarded and should just fuck off back to wherever you came from, you have nothing to contribute here except to make this place more stupid.

About killing the PCs, to do that the DM need only say
>a meteor strikes you, you're all dead,
or if you want extra steps
>you meet a hundred flying Tarrasques surrounded by an anti-magic field that negates all spells and magic items, roll initiative.
It's not hard to do, and it has nothing to do with the OSR.

Off you fuck.

I have a metricised retroclone (or so) of Chainmail called "Scalemail" that I posted here a couple years back --which evolved eventually into the thing called Battle aXe. (another wargame for B/X) But I didnt know any other clones, otherwise I would have chosen another name.

It's bound to be broken at some places as the scope is much larger compared to Battle aXe, anon. I released it after realising that I wont be single-handedly able to playtest all probabilities. But it should be okay, in general. I hope it will be of use to someone someway.
>>
>>97710264
>>97710430
>>97710490
In case anybody is interested, I've uploaded the afore-mentioned "metricised clone of Chainmail" called Scalemail from 2015ish here:
https://www.sendspace.com/file/oe8in1
This one is really faithful to the base/mass combat rules of Chainmail, but it doesn't have the man-to-man, fantasy combat rules, or fantasy units. Since those didn't need to be metricised, I guess the guy who did this didn't feel it was necessary to include them.

Not sure who the author is, or where I got it from originally.
>>
>>97710522
That's the thing I made, anon. I'm the same guy
It eventually evolved into this:
https://hexhunt.itch.io/battleaxe

It was my initial attempt to extract the "essence" out of Chainmail to make it more beginner friendly, an an effort to understand the system better.
>>
>>97710564
Oh, I see! Then I can update my archive with this information. Sorry about the confusion, but the current incarnation is very different from your first one.

Your first attempt is from 2015, right?

Do you have any unique ways of introducing new characters to the part after a PC death?
I mean if they're in a populated city or something it's usually easy enough, but what if they're in the middle of nowhere? Or recently I had my party be in small remote village where part of the plot was that nobody was allowed to enter or leave until they solve a task. And one character almost died and I'm glad he didn't, because I was very worried how I'd be able to get a new one in there.

So a milf barrack slut, that hates men that abandon their families and station.
She probably became a mercenary, because she is infertile, so useless. Making money by day with an axe, and with her legs open at night. She saved some noble and became a knight, now following a goddes of ferility and is on a pilgrimage.
Distracting her enemies with insults, flirting and no underwear, she strikes fear into unfaithful men.

I'm a big fan of using the Dual-Weapon Warrior archetype on bombers. It grants you access to Double Slice (which allows you to make two Strikes with two melee weapons held in different hands, both at your full attack bonus), then Dual-Weapon Thrower, which lets you do the same thing with two thrown weapons. This relies on the Double Brew class feature that alchemists get at level 9, so it's something you'd build towards, but once you've got the requisite feats your combat rotation becomes:

>Double Brew to creature two bombs.
>Double Slice to throw one bomb at your full bonus, then the second with a -2 penalty (since it's not Agile) rather than the -5 you'd normally take.

You're effectively spending your remaining action each round to enable Double Slice and make your second Strike +3 more accurate than it would otherwise be. It's the best thing I've found to spend that action on as an alchemist.

Also: I'd absolutely recommend Demolitionist for bomber alchemists in a Free Archetype game. Bombers require a ton of feats just to remain basically functional in combat, making them desperately feat-starved. The fact that Demolitionist contains not one but two of those must-take feats (Expanded Splash and Directional Bombs) means that you can offload those two to your Free Archetype feat slots and free up some space for more alchemist feats. The downside is that you get them later than you otherwise would, but I think it's worth it. It might be too late for him to do this, but putting off those feats until you can get them via Demolitionist at levels 8/10/12 is probably the best value you're going to get out of your FA slots. You could also go Demolitionist earlier, but that locks you into taking some of the other, less useful Demolitionist feats due to the Dedication rules. There's nothing you really need in the archetype any earlier than Directional Bombs at level 8.

Iwao is from Getsu, although he lived on the outskirts, at the foothold of that mountain range. This means his father had longer commute to work, as most projects are built in the city proper, but he was never the most sociable guy, and it helped prevent eventual bullying Iwao might have suffered if he lived surrounded by other kids from being a pebble. Iwao started visiting the city when he was 5yo, always accompanied by his dad. Initially it was to see the market, later also to help his dad with work by carrying stuff.
Iwao likes being surrounded by people, but it can get a bit overwhelming for him, and at times he misses the peace and quiet of the mountains. He also liked to hike. The view from the peak was the closest he could get to flying. He also misses his dad since they don't meet as often nowadays that Iwao's in the academy. When something happens, like when Iwao sees a pretty bird or a rock, he can be seen looking for his dad to tell him, only to get saddened when he realises he's not there.
