Various AD&D/OSR threads are full on cancer with autism shitfights and gay nonsense.

I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while.

So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI.

Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). I don't need any modules and minimizing splats is ideal, so if you feel like any of these "cannot be enjoyed" without X extra book(s) please include that information as well.

Quick confirmation: B/X is holmes basic/expert from the 70s and BECMI is Moldvay et al from the 80s right?

B/X has OSE as a rewrite/clarifying document from modern times and BECMI has the Rules Compendium as similar but from the 90s, yeah?
>>
>>97710369
>The thing is, AD&D 1e is written like it is patch notes.
The DMG feels very much like this, using the "hidden rules for the DM only" shtick to cover it up a bit.
>>
>>97710373
Yo, if you post about AD&D 2e on this thread, this one psycho comes and calls you a fish. That's how this board works. I don't know why the mods don't ban him. Maybe they do and he's good at evading them.
He will MAKE the drama look like "the primary discussion topic" by spamming, which he also does in the OSR threads. This isn't true; it's just one psycho spamming the thread. Just respond to the real posts.
>>
>>97710381
>>BECMI has the Rules Compendium as similar but from the 90s, yeah?

NTA, but from what I recall yes. It may have had a few things added and fuck was that book near impossible to find back in the day.
>>
>>97710382
The DMG, which came out later than the PHB, modifies and nerfs a bunch of things in the PHB. I wonder if those were last minute things or if they just didn't get into the PHB as an oversight.

Anyway, the patch notes stuff is like:

>"Clerics and fighters have been strengthened in relation to magic-users, although not overly so. Clerics have more and improved spell capability. Fighters are mare effective in combat and have other new advantages as well. Still, magic-users ore powerful indeed, and they have many new spells. None of these over-shadow thieves, all recommended sub-classes - druids, paladins, rangers, illusionists, and assassins- as well as the special monk class of character, are included in order to assure as much variety of approach as possible"

There's other stuff like this, and then there's other things that are like "play the game this way because everything in it is necessary for a campaign". But it is just written like he was simply in continuous development mode, which I'm sure he was, and the publishing of this was just part of the process. It sounds like the intention was to keep going, keep doing stuff. I really do wish we had had a few more years of Gygax at TSR.

when was the last time you bought a board game? which one was it?
>>
>>97710334
If we count group purchases, my group bought Clank Legacy 2 (it was shit) on 15/05/25. If not, my last purchase was Hegemony on 21/04/25. Haven't even had a chance to play it yet. So I mean I'm almost there if it's a challenge. There's nothing I plan on buying in the near future either.

It's the only way I can win games.

Hey so been wanting to play in a Romance of the Three Kingdoms inspired game that I could use to run such a setting, starting from Yellow Turbans and going through it. But haven't found any ttrpgs for the setting,

any suggestions on games I could use for this? Also Please no gurps or fate recommendations as my group just don't mesh with those systems.

I like it. The book is beautiful, it fits the low fantasy wuxia genre incredibly well. My one gripe is that when they translated it from frog to english there were some minor translation issues - but it's not big enough to actually effect gameplay.

The yin yang die mechanics take a little bit of getting used to if you're used to games like dnd but are thematic and fun. Essentially you have two d10, one is yin one is yang - to roll for a result you subtract the higher from the lower to get the result which ranges from 0-9. When testing a skill you add your ability and skill to the yin yang result to get a final result.

If your yin and yang are the same (except for 0) you've achieved a critical success and regain some chi. If your yin and yang are both 0 you critically fail and lose some chi.

Combat can be a bit esoteric but it feels like a movie like Hero or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and encourages movement and flexibility.

Mass combat (from the Art of War book) is ok but the individual heroics definitely are the main focus of the game.

Hrmmm I see doesn't sound so bad. Have you run much of it? If so I'd love to talk with you more to learn more of it so I can better learn it for my group.
>>
>>97710285
I've run it a bit, but I'm not an expert. As much as I hate the rpg.net forums some dude ran a campaign there like a decade ago that explains everything pretty well. I dunno if you can find it on the internet archives.
>>
>>97710293
hrmm trying to find it any idea what to search for it? or something to narrow down the search?

also would you be up to sharing discords so I can ask questions easier? I understand if you prefer not to.

So we're getting God Gundam.

Are they baller enough to do a deluxe set with Ultimate Gundam? Brave enough to give us Fuunsaiki? Surely if they release God they have to release Maxter and Nobel. Can I get Master Asia, not even in a suit, just kicking things?

Was excited until i see 3 mobile workers at different sizes and a fucking battleship in the game. Look like they treated this as a board gamify version of SRW instead of small scale gundam. Can't wait to see Big Zam and Neon Zeong being only slightly taller than a MS...

A friend wants to teach me Magic: The Gathering in a few days, but the catch is I want to mess with him. I want to know enough to know how to unexpectedly beat him while he thinks he is merely teaching me. I know nothing about the game beyond very basic ideas of what each color does. My friend tends to gravitate towards blue and knows the game very well in general like a walking dictionary. He said he wants me to play a black and white build of his. However, I may be able to change it up because I might be able to convince him to let me look at his cards and pick a different deck of his.

My questions are:
>How can I learn the game well in a short time
>How can I surprise him by winning?
>If I can change the color(s) of the deck, what should I change it to?
>Is there any particular cards/builds/strategies that you use to beat very knowledgeable players?

Jund is a grindy, power-hungry and ruthless deck, reminiscent of the Jund shard from Alara. It aims to simply play the most objectively powerful card it can, always. Very little synergy between individual cards. Nothing tribal. Rarely combos, just the best card in your colors for that slot in your deck.

"When in doubt, Jund 'em out," means exactly that. If you're not certain, fall back on Magic fundamentals--powerful cards, aggressive creatures, efficient removal, and build a deck that has no dominating matchups against anything... but also doesn't stray much behind a 55-45% win percentage either.
>>
I'm also new to the game can someone explain what "untapped islands them out" means

What you end up playing anon?
>>
>>97695161
It got pushed back. Still trying to learn.

Does anyone know how I can learn or create OP combos?
>>
>>97704591
Just google em. If you know the general range of sets or blocks you'll be playing you can narrow it down a bit.

Like I said
>""we had some things noted on what we wanted to do on this plane. We made Tarkir that eclipses the same niche so we just moved the things we had developed for one plane to the other. And because they have so much in common we will not touch mongsend""

Now we have context of DEI. But it doesn't change that Tarkir is not Mongsend and nor it changes that Mongseng exists.
>>
>>97710259
Not anymore, since the Planechase card existed pre-Tarkir they couldn't just wish it away, so it technically exists separately but will never be used. Does not changed the fact that the Tarkir block was meant to be set on Mongseng but was changed for woke DEI reasons, making Tarkir the first woke DEI set (as if Alesha didn't give that away).

Bottom 5 plane.

It really doesn't. I run games for new groups off Reddit because I like it and it's fun. And I use FR because I like it and it's fun. And it's been years and at-least dozens of players since anyone ever complained that I wasn't doing Forgotten Realms the "right" way.
