Gearhead thread but for /tg/Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?
>>97835016It's really just about making it fun for yourself than anything else. Personally, my favorite pencils are pic-related. They're very pretty and mad of incense cedar.
>>97834954These "Statty's noteboards" are pretty handy for traveling GM's. It has 1 inch hexes/squares on the other side which is great for gaming. Can be wiped and the thing fits in a pocket folded. But in home games I love the Chessex Megamat. It is huge, and lays flat easily. The surface is pleasant to the touch. It is basically as big as my whole table, but it is fine, the character sheets and all the tools can just lay on top of it. Wet erase is also kind of better than dry erase in some ways.
>>97835036>better than dry erase in some ways.Like not getting all over my hands as I touch the table, ways. I agree.
>>97809050Go here. jetpens.comAll the paper and pens and pencils. Refill inks and stationary designed to last. Worthwhile if you don't have a Michael's hobby store (much cheaper high quality notebooks compared to everywhere else) or a Walker's Office supply (bulk discounts).

>>97834738>Does anyone know any house rules which maintain that low level feel of needing to improvise, rather than relying on your class features? Obviously, you can just restrict players to like level one or two, but then there’s very little progression.Idk maybe make enemies vastly stronger, like +5 to AC and saves always, 2-5 x HP, 2 x damage, but have improvised solutions be vastly more effective too, for example toppling a large statue on a troll straight up automatically kills it, a charging beast has 0 chance of avoiding a pit trap and if it's deep enough it's stuck there with no chance of escape, direct ballista hits instakill huge and smaller targets etc. Ideally you should just look for a different system instead.
>>97834738If you and your party like playing at low levels, you could always attack the problem by just keeping them from leveling up as ofte. Cut the exp to 1/4 of what's listed, or if you run milestone leveling make the milestone harder to reach.
I've got a hankering to play a shaman-like character in 5.5e. More or less I'd draw upon nature spirits to do magic for me. It sounds like I'd be rolling a Warlock, but would I be better off dipping into Druid, taking the Guide background, or working with my DM to homebrew something, whether it be an entire class or subclass of Warlock?
What are some item ideas or mechanic changes or anything to give players something to do while unconscious but stable?>magic sword that fights after death>playing pets or summons>choice to keep rolling d20s to get 1 hp on 20 but risk haunt to start making death saves if 1>becoming stable just heals to 1 hp
>>97834991There is the Vestige Warlock from Unearthed Arcana, which does explicitly summon a spirit. It also gets access to a Cleric domain as extra spells, and while it does just list the 2024 domains, it wouldn't be a huge stretch to use the Nature or Tempest spell list from 2014.The damage types are a little off, being Fire, Necrotic, and Radiant. But you could likely swap that to Fire, Poison, and Thunder and end up with a similar overall effectiveness. And likewise the final feature is to upcast a Summon spell, but again swapping it for Summon Beast/Elemental also would probably be fine. Add on the Guide background for a bit more Druid magic and take Pact of the Chain so you can have another 'nature spirit' of some variety and it's shaping up pretty well with minimal tweaks.
Hello elegan/tg/gentlemen,Bit of an odd question, but, I am travelling from USA to Europe and I will visit over there a friend of mine who is into /tg/ stuff and lives over there now. We have a rule of not bringing gifts to eachother, but nonetheless I wanted to bring something, maybe not in excess of 10$. What could I bring him? Preferably something that he cannot get in Europe or is more expensive there. Any ideas? Thanks in advanceTL;DR cheap stuff /tg/ related which is more expensive or had to get in Europe than the USApic unrelated
You're an American. Bring him a gun
Anything that is popular enough is also available in Europe. Assuming you have enough prep time, look around /awg/ for the manufacturers list. There are some indie mini makers that don’t sell across the pond (or the shipping costs are insane). For example, I found this old school manufacturer that I had shipped to my ex-gf uncle’s and I picked it up when we visited last summer.
>>97833049Pro Acryl paints maybe? Those are made in USA if I recall correctly. But then again they're liquid so maybe they'll get stopped during your molestation by the TSA at the airport. A good reaper miniature you think he will like possibly?I'm not sure beyond that.
>>97833049>We have a rule of not bringing gifts to eachother, >but nonetheless I wanted to bring somethingDon't. Really. You're just going to make it weird.
>>97833049>What could I bring him?Wishes of health, good luck and happiness, you rule-breaking faggot.

I am playing old CoC starting with 2E, I play solitaire TTRPGs because everyone is a fucking retard who wants social lube and "good" times doing things for laughs rather than trying to roleplay or seriously do anything.I finished the Haunted House with relative ease, my characters didn't figure out the sunlight, but we dealt with everything without death or going insane. Which makes sense as its the tutorial. However, the 2nd scenario is very confusing. How is anyone supposed to "win" in this scenario? There is no clear way to stop the ritual. The rules are clusterfuck of a mess, which is fine as long as there is a way to win. Combat is a no go because of the Mi-Go's super high armor. The only thing I can think of is that you are supposed to run away to tell the authorities and fuck outta there and say "it's someone else's problem" which actually will result in the certain doom of the town at the hand of Ithaqua because they are doing the ritual every night with a 28% chance of success to cause a massive blizzard and snow to kill all the town, then set up a mining camp there. My characters thought that the hillbilly was key to stopping the ritual and killed him in combat, but afterwards died to all the Mi-Go's hunting them down, carrying them into the atmosphere and all meeting their death through lung explosion. Is this common in CoC? Is this how most of the scenarios and stories are?
>>97834275My main question here is how did anyone manage to beat this scenario successfully.
How does horror work in a TTRPG?
Ran The Necropolis out of Gateways of Terror for my group last night. Two players were going to miss our Horror on the Orient Express session, so I did it instead. Had a 75% casualty rate, but the last character made it out. I had to beef up the monster, however, as our Solider player nearly killed it in the first round of combat with an impale on their gun (they did 14 damage out of 17 health). I made it so their gun did half damage instead, though they still ended up bringing it down to 2 HP before they got killed. Rather disappointingly, none of them even attempted to sneak past the monster and get into the room it emerged from, so they never found its heart. Instead, it died due to the tomb caving in after the exit was dynamited by the last surviving PC. We had a good time, but it’s definitely a con scenario, and a much more combat-focused one at that. I feel like of the three scenarios in the book, it’s the one least suited to people who have never played an investigative horror game before. The lethality might put them off it if they’re not used to that kind of thing.

An actual person will always do it better, but it will take a while to get there, and the long road of learning can be disheartening, but it is also fun and fulfilling. You can also combine your skills with the slop. It produces the best results.

Hey /tg/ I have a problem. One of my players is a genuine incel. He's 27 and I'm pretty sure he's never had sex. He definitely hasn't gotten laid in a while. He's not really ugly just kinda weird and awkward. I feel bad for him. But he is taking his extreme thirst out in the game. >every time his character, a human eldritch knight, comes back from our adventures he always tries to play up the angle of "we saved the town, where are the girls to suck my dick as thanks?">he constantly talks about how his character is 6 foot 2 (he's 5 foot 8 irl)>he talks out of his ass a lot about medieval times and says that peasant girls were way healthier than modern women.>says how farmers would be begging to marry their lithe 17 year old daughters to him>he talks about medieval demographics and criticizes the DMa works building (which is actually kinda shit to be fair) >you can just tell how excited he is talking about how there should be a dozen villages between these two cities on the map, like he is stopping just short of talking about how many nubile virgin farm girls are there for his fighter to fuckWe tried talking to him about it but he twisted it around to make the rest of us sound like we were fucking gay or something. Also his character is too important to the story to kick him, and running him as an NPC would suck the fun out of it since there's be a lot of the DM just roleplaying with himself while the rest of us watch. So....any advice? Its not worth ruining the game over by kicking him, and nothing is so blatant to be a clear social violation, but the dude is just oozing incel energy and I feel like I should subtly suggest to the DM something that will set his head on straight, and possibly help cure his mindset. Any ideas?
>>97834928This. Positive change starts with you, and this guy clearly hasn't developed his sexual and social skills in a normal healthy way, the only course of action is to lay him down by the fire, caress his manly body, make him moan and perspire. Ashes is at the extreme end where you usually cant use everything you draw after round 1, and you will see most of your deck, so both draw and tutoring are on the weaker side.piccy is some exampls of cards that look similar (one shot pay X to draw 3) but are very different valuation because of the system theyre in.

>>97833591The long and short of it is that Solar Brawl is very flashy, but from what I've seen it's individual Charm costs ramp up very quickly. Whereas Infernal Brawl is comparatively modest, but is way more generous with scenelongs/permanent effects. If the Solar gets the timing right and pops off a good attack, nothing can stop him. But that's a big if, there's a reason why Dodge has often been recommended as a supplement to Brawl, and Infernal Brawl kinda approaches fights with both being and adapting to worst case scenarios. Worth noting that Hero-Sundering Hands forces a grappled foe to either accept the highest crippling injury possible (which doesn't count for their maximum) and Star-Swallowing Cosmos Collapse (showy name but it just lets you grapple out to short range) implies Infernal Brawlers have much less to fear from multiple opponents and battlegroups.>Blasphemous Miracle ProvidenceFor me, the big breakthrough was seeing Distant Whisper Wind (influence someone in Essence X10 miles briefly, or everyone in extreme range for a prolonged period), Spoken Sigil Ideogram (sub Linguistics for another social Charm's Ability. Did I mention Performance has a separate Charm to use it's Charms interchangeably for all kinds of performance? Or War) and Conceptual Rebus Concatenation (use TWO Simple Linguistics Charms together!) together in Linguistics. And after some consultation realising that yes, you CAN blast people with your Torments while ravaging their Resolve.>the main thingMercifully not only do Infernals have a lot of tools to even the odds (like the Brawl Charms I mentioned), but Shadow Spite Curse is back (in Larceny) and better than ever at absolutely fucking over everyone else's rolls. Best thing is unlike Abyssals, Infernals are much less reliant on actually landing penalties on people; the overall Charm design is more about either winning the war even if the battle's lost or throwing out costly to deal with effects at crazy ranges.
>>97833660>real, cooler NPC InfernalsHolden, of course, claims he had no idea what he was thinking when writing that. And yeah, Essence really discouraged me as well. I do wish there was a bit more substance to what Infernals currently have, but I'll gladly take it over either Cosmic Exalted Akuma or the SJWs of Hell.>Interpreting these bodiesIt's a reasonable take, one thing I will never be used to with 3e is lots of things going unexplained or confusingly worded when 2e at least tried to lay all the cards on the table when it wasn't OUTRIGHT withholding the big boys' statblocks from you.One thing that strikes me about the draft demons' statblocks is they look much more incomplete than the ones in HDNP, and what struck me about a lot of HDNP demons was that in many cases they weren't MEANT to be combat monsters. So my final cope is that the actual, published version of Ligier, Ululaya and the lot may just have a few extra things to clarify how their celestial bodies work or add to their powerset. It doesn't have to be anything too showy, I would be quite pleased with a Principle Invoking Onslaught-style hack of a Merit that just goes "Ligier's might transcends mere physicality. He can make these effects with Presence, Performance, Occult etc which makes them manifest as pillars of hellfire erupting from beneath the foe, rains of molten metal, environmental hazards with X Difficulty and Y damage etc etc etc" It's not a hope I'm holding onto particularly strongly, because I've consistently seen 3e's development take the path of least resistance and most low effort, shallow, reactionary kneejerk response to prior editions' content. But 3e Infernals has restored enough of my optimism to wait and hope at least. That and fill in the feedback form for what little good it'll do.
Speaking of Infernal Bureaucracy, while the whole arsenal of bureaucratic curses is very creative and all, looking through Solar Bureaucracy I find it funny that there is one (1) Solar Charm (Woe-Capturing Web) that is designed to hard counter all of them as long as the Solar can match the mote cost of said curse. There is no roll-off or anything. The curse just gets negated or returned to sender by the Solar who can maintain it for as long as the motes are committed.I'm not even mad, it's fucking hilarious how that one Charm exists specifically to punish counter-organisational mystic hubris.
>>97834034Looking back on Brawl, I see what you mean. 3e always challenged me when it came to comparing cumulative effect or advantage because of how every non-Simple Charm as potentially in play at any time (insert another jab at charm bloat here). That said, I *was* relieved to see that they weren't afraid to make more permanent effects available to Infernals; I was concerned they'd back away from the self-transformative design approach for Infernal powers (although thankfully, nothing as unavoidably punitive as some of the 2e charms like Witness to Darkness or Hateful Wretched Noise, which I've never not seen houseruled). Scene or day-long cooldowns on e.g. Crack the Sky, or Shadow Spite Curse, really make me feel bad though. I understand why they're there (begrudgingly), but I do think Vance or whoever is in charge now overuses the idea when they were principally a throttle for perfect defenses.Although after a closer reading of One Hand Fury, it seems to me that while transforming your arm into a weapon is permanent in itself, the surcharge effect functions solely as an adjunct to Infernal Monster Awakened and only lasts as long as that charm does (i.e. one scene).>3CDsI think their limitation is also a function of spirits now having bespoke Charms rather than drawing exclusively from a generalized list, which has its own advantages and disadvantages (primarily being the sheer amount of stuff they need to meaningfully interact with player Exalts at their intended level of power). Arguably demons like Ligier deserve more exclusive treatment - I would've liked to have seen his sorcery and "realm-warping martial arts" (cf. RoGD2) better represented as well, but they'd need to draw a line somewhere, and I think 3e's Charm approach itself is also to blame for that. Getting him to an adequate level was the primary goal, which if I'm correct just merges into your point about design path of least resistance.
>>97834521I'm absolutely convinced, because the Exalts weren't written in parallel, that this was a combination of Holden and Morke future-proofing Solar Bureaucracy against unforeseen shenanigans that could unhinge the Ability set, and some degree of Holden's philosophy of Solar favoritism manifesting itself. I've found his pattern of going just slightly too far with Solars very consistent in his work from Ink Monkeys to ExWod. Can't argue that it's fun when you benefit from it though, and to be fair to the guy, Solars being first out the gate has always been to their detriment each edition.
