>>97182972Lower humanity characters should spook the normies overall. As per>sinsHumanity loss should be a matter of rationalizing and coping rather than the physical act that takes your humanity.>Kill someone just cause (no justification)Clear humanity loss>Kill someone because it would lead to more deaths (trolley problem)This is where you probe them and their mental state, and then if clearly they're being a psychopath either you make them roll or you take a humanity. Of course, if the trolley problem is too easy then it doesn't work. So you'll have to be a bit smart with the ramifications of their sins. If you wanted to be based, humanity loss shouldn't happen until after the Kindred has processed the consequences of his actions by being shown them or something
>>97183086Seems very gay, SI isn't terrible in theory but making them full on SCP-tier spooks with access to every phone in the world is cringe

>>97183007Sounds really easy and I'll do that for next time.>>97183125>until after the Kindred has processed the consequences of his actions by being shown them or somethingKinda related but I was having a discussion with my other friend who was trying to push me to run V5 for my group instead. His argument was that the hunger mechanic means less tracking and less disjointed morality systems because your psychopathy is baked into the risk of doing stuff rather than potentially getting lawyered or even missed, or worse weaponized in the table.Anyway, you're suggesting that the morality check shouldn't be at the time of when it was committed but after seeing the consequences, and while that does seem appropriate for the tone, I'm wondering if at any point it would feel limiting or punishing for the players? If a system has a theme of trying to walk the line between the beast and the human, wouldn't it be kinda bad to be like "remember that city hall employee whose ID you stole? Yeah he got fired and your pimp ghoul tells you in passing that his wife is now turning tricks on the corner street" because if we're talking about consequences it's basically all in my control so there's an element of the ST trying to twist the knife and make you feel guilty for acting like a monster in the monster game.

>>97182545This is what I really hate about Anime fantasy these days. They just have such a blunt video game out look on things. I always found it weird that D&D was maligned as witchcraft, satanism, and anti-social. From what I can tell, TTRPGs just increase sociability, problem solving, conscientiousness, and probably improves self-concept through skills and self-esteem. Did any anons here live through Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons or the Satanic Panic? Sorry if this is boring or repetitive to others, but I want to study the social aspects of TTRPGs and how it exists as a subculture. I think, by and large, this is the best board on 4chan because people really care about this hobby and want to help others get into it. Despite the shitposting, I think the community is vibrant and the games I played through Find a Game threads were all filled with genuine, nice people. So it irks me that the Satanic Panic tried to paint subcultures as evil. Maybe it's because people think TTRPGs overlap with extreme music or just teenage entertainment in general.
And of course at the lightest prompting the /pol/fags come out of the woodwork to start talking about Covid and the Jews.

I want to make my own alternative to the classic VtM setting. What parts should I learn from? What parts should I cut to don't commit the same mistakes they made?
>>97172788In very broad strokes, VtM is adored for its world building rather than rules at this point. The rules were okay at the time as an alternative to dnd but aren't notably good or suited to the game's stated goals of political vampire drama. So figure out what about the lore was captivating, both in specifics and the abstract, learn how to do that. Look at the rules, and rpg rules in general, to see what not to do and find games that have rules built around specific gameplay goals. Vague but that's where you're at with the limited initial inputs. The abstract for why the lore was so initially captivating was likely a bit of 90s goth genx lighting in a bottle, which you won't be able to imitate but mirroring with the current year horror resurgence might work out. Having distinctive and good art instead of generic rpg art is key as well.
>>97172788Just play Requiem, they already did that for you.
>>97172788Don't try to include every single stupid ass monster in all of fiction, and if you do, don't let some other random who hates vampires write the material for them.Don't do 'what if God...was le evil,' it's played out at this point. Decide which religion is right or if none of them are but demiurge shit is as tedious as "we are all stardust" posting at this point.Honestly maybe don't set it in modern times. There's like 3 or 4 centuries of modern history almost no one even kinda uses except GURPS and that one swashbuckling system. Oh and Warhammer Fantasy but WHF isn't set on Earth.

>>97182901>This is the main sticking point. You can't really have functional trade if anyone who goes to the city is hunted down for leaving.ah sorry should have clarified on that, the traders and travelers can come and go so long as they observe all the rules the dragon would have conjured up to run this literally and metaphorically gilded city, people the dragon specifically abducted would not be permitted to leave.I would want to have the dragon be an open ruler, again to its vanity 'yes this is my city, the city of a dragon, fuck around and find out'. But making the cult a driving factor in the operation of the city is a grand idea.

The full doc is here (character limit) : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a2jOdevMru4qTWOGlOBkTlHQIi3OqSP76OzcLeuGPJ0/edit?usp=sharingI'm working on a setting for a game, by which I mean I've been shitposting about it with my friend, but I've come up with enough ideas that I actually want to run it now. Help me brainstorm if you want. To be clear I'm not intending to make this a "tg setting", it's just for my own personal game, but feel free to steal any ideas you want for your own thing if you wish, you could even make your own thread. Nothing in the setting has to make sense. The only thing I care about it is that it's whimsical and / or provides the players with fun stuff to interact with. I want to focus on physical, player-facing features. History, deities (if any), religion, and the like are not important at this time. Because of the rule system I'm using, no magic system is required, that's already taken care of. Here's what I have so far.By the way, don't worry about your ideas being good or bad, and please be positive about other people's ideas. If I feel something doesn't fit, I just won't use it.Besides locations and creatures, please feel free to suggest events, adventures, and characters. All characters in the world are talking animals.General idea : basically sword and sorcery but it's like a children's book and takes place in a holiday / dessert / candy-themed world. Pretty much an episode of adventure time. All fauna and terrain is made of some kind of food. All water features (rivers, lakes, etc.) are filled with milk instead of water, and milk has the inherent magical property of being permanently self-chilling, and it is always clean and safe to drink.Important rule : All sapient animals are "normal" (except that they talk and wear clothes). All non-sapient animals are made of food.
Thanks again, I have implemented several of your ideas
>>97176558The document is just 1 page that's just your post.I'm not seeing any mechanics, only themes. Here: have some actual literal game mechanics in a digital medium:https://bee-swarm-simulator.fandom.com/wiki/Bee_Swarm_Simulator_WikiI think if you combine candy bees/candy Pokemon with your sword and sorcery then you'll get something decent. Also if you were a knowledgeable millennial, gen-Xer or baby boomer then you'd reference Willy Wonka at least once. Or if you were a knowledgeable gen-Zer with multiple media under your belt you'd reference Wreck It Ralph/Candy Rush at least once.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayjNuVCstQ8Here's a very very "nice" idea which none of these cheapskate candyland rip-offs ever have the jawbreakers inside their pants to suggest...Candy cannibalism mechanics. And I don't mean just as a joke with ooohhh you're soo delicious, no no I mean full on leeching vampirisim I have to eat my own friend to survive level of neediness or eat my own candy leg. I literally have to drink your strawberry blood to survive. It's like sex, it feels so good but it's ... actually far more frowned upon than sex, I mean humans don't usually eat one another after copulation, only insects and a few arachnids do that.Comment too long. >>97183026Yes, I don't have any need for mechanics at this time, as everything is already covered by the system, so I'm primarily interested in setting elements.
>>97183026Why do you think I'm interested in referring to the willy wonka story?
This is my fetish.
Sorry for effortposting your Friday1. What systems have you found that have made combat engaging?2. What do you think is a satisfying duration for most fights? Over quickly? Or minimal resolution (followed by optional exposition)3. Do you find a sort of "bidding" of dice (such as in Riddle of Steel and her derivatives) fun? Or do you prefer the dice that you roll to be fairly consistent/static in their outcomes?4. Do you find "maneuvers"- like in Mythras- fun? Do you find that tracking a number of maneuvers grinds combat resolution down too slowly? What about a sort of freeform ability to spend "bonus success" on maneuvers (sort of "fiction first")?I'm thinking about my system. It's very inspired by Mythras, Forbidden Lands, and Riddle of Steel but I'm unsatisfied with it. I'd like to really look at the fundamentals- the statistics, the base mechanics, the speed of resolving each round- before tacking on additional details. Right now, I have attacker declaring an attack and defender declaring a reaction (dodge, parry, or block with shield), rolling a dice pool (attribute+professional rank+gear bonus) and comparing successes. Extra successes are spent on dealing more damage or performing maneuvers. I'm curious if anyone here has experiences in systems that they've found particularly fun, fast, engaging, and place a lot of decision pressure on the player (to replicate- in a way- the stress of combat)
>>97176938NTA, but that sounds like a flaw, just a different one: You need a player that is pretty good with the system, to simulate a character that is pretty good with a weapon. System mastery is just too powerful, and can let weak characters win Vs more powerful foes. That's fun when it's done on the player's side, and/or his actions make the opponent fight stupidly, but a low skill player won't have as much fun, and will be completely left out of the whole mind game dimension of the system.
>>97177487The funny thing about Dark Heresy 2 specifically is that the humble Longlas is one of the best weapons in the game outside of extremely rare, overt and difficult to acquire kit, due to how sniper weapons give you a massive bonus to hit and almost double your damage (in a system with flat DR) if you aim them and overcharge them. A bad shooter hits reasonably consistently with a longlas, and a good shooter does around a plasma shot worth of damage on each trigger pull (up to almost a melta shot against certain unnaturally tough targets).
>>97178552>You need a player that is pretty good with the system, to simulate a character that is pretty good with a weaponTo be fair, simply reading the system is not the same as being "pretty good" with it.>but a low skill player won't have as much funGood. Low effort players don't deserve to have fun.
>>97170048>17th Sea first edition is probably the most engaging combat system I've used. It's by no means perfect but the way initiative works keeps you on your toes from start to finish - you have on average from 2 to 4 actions and each action is rolled as a die that sets initiative for it, meaning even if you have more actions or were winning for multiple rounds there is no guarantee opponent won't be able to get some licks in.>2For an adventuring game I'd say it should be around half an hour, unless your group is heavily into wargaming. Switching activities in 20-40 minutes chunks helps to keep people engaged. You should break this rule mostly for big set pieces or finales.>37th Sea is really good on this part, since it uses Roll'N'Keep - you roll X dice and choose Y of them, giving you decent stability in rolls, but still with some variance. Having native ability to underperform, choosing lower die results, is also very much on brand for the swashbuckling genre when you need to throw the fight and see if you can make it believable.>47th Sea is all about maneuvers - parries, lunges, binds, even grappling. 7th Sea is not ideal by any means, it has a tendency to fail on point 2 with newer groups, and maneuvers and swormaster schools aren't really balanced properly, but it works good enough and is really good at supporting its genre - Zorro, Three Musketeers, Captain Blood and so on. Emphasis on supporting the genre cliches mixed with robust combat system really helps to sell the battles to the players and make them engaging. It really would have been nice to have a proper second edition that works out the kinks, and reshuffles some parts, but existing second edition is absolute shit both fluff and mechanics wise.

>>97181850WH40K is just that, but because mechs are lostech and very rare.
>>97181850Manticors and Demolishers? 12 Longtom Cannons 26 boards away and a concealed spotter is how you deal with mechs.

They'd go down one after another in focused fire while the tanks are forced to spread their damage out even if they focus one mech and depending on where they pick their fight the tanks won't have as much TMM to work with while the mechs can keep their maximum TMM in all situations>Tanks might be able to threaten headcaps if they're lucky or bring down light mechs if they're out of position>Ultimately it'd come down to where the fight happens, open field the tanks have an advantage, wooded area the mechs would have a large advantage. But with their generally superior movement options mechs would be able to dictate where the engagement happensMechs need to respect combat vehicles, but in this case you'll need more than just tanks to win. I know that isn't the point of what your topic was, I just wanted to analyze the pic related.
>>97182984Why would you deploy from a dropship into a seemingly empty map square? You could just stay up until you found the artillery and deployed there instead. I dunno why people forget mechs deploy from super advanced go-anywhere dropships.
