How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?

There are six million feral hogs in the US, they reach sexual maturity within six months, have an average of six piglets per litter, and breed three times per year. This means that the hog population can explode within a few years depending on resources and predators.

Goblins are the same, they mature fast and breed a lot. A concentrated effort to eradicate them would be like punching the ocean to keep the tide back.
>just put a bounty on them
Then you get the cobra effect where people will breed goblins for money.

>>
>>97216261
I think a lot of people would breed goblins for free. Some would even pay.

>How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting?

It's just a natural cycle of ecological succession.
Many of the "civilized races" in settings were "pest races" in the past: small, fast breeding, adaptable/generalized, living on minimal or undesirable land, and being kept around to do do unpleasant either low-paid work if not outright enslaved. These same qualities however gave them a competitive edge over the other species once resources started to become depleted and conditions declined overall. Quite literally, the more "successful" the civilized races became the more competitive the pest races became.

Hell yes. Thank you! For some reason the name made me suspect something contemporary and very lame. Don't judge a book by its cover I guess. Yes, that is what I was talking about, and I will look forward to playing through this one
>>97216273
Like I said, I think it's really more an aesthetic thing rather than a material difference. The medium itself is not a poison. There are plenty of normal CYOAs that display the same issues, which vary by the work. What it comes down to is really that I haven't seen one I liked yet, and that I think it overcomplicates the elegant simplicity of a chimage. It seems like interactives are usually made by people who would really be better off making either a video game or a visual novel. It also annoys me that I can't skim it beforehand to find out if it's even worth playing. A couple times I've started one and had it turn into porn after like three sections
>>
>>97216258
>I would question whether most interactives (or CYOAs, period) "rely" on the artwork.
I think they do, if only slightly. When you see the image, you expect it to be a "preview" of the option itself - your imagination builds around the illustrated idea. Even a simple image of, say, a waifu throwing down a fire punch would imply some sort of aura around your fist, for example. This is something equally valid for CYOAs themselves.
>>97216273
Keep in mind that this is a personal opinion, the lack of direction and bloat is the worst thing for me.
Subpar/industrialized 'graphics' is irrelevant, but the ease of adding options (sometime a click depending on your app) inside those quickly provoke scope creep. Look at the Worm Interactive - it went on and on, adding powers and sources and restrictions and whatnot. Of course it's bad from an attention span standpoint, because the Reader probably won't bother, but the most offensive thing for me is the loss of identity.
I want to play Worm, not have powers lifted from JoJo or get the Force or use spellcrafts. Remember how Entropist included things from JJK in v2? Imagine that, but going on and on with the in-unverse consistency getting thinner each time.
At the end, you have a sort of giant gestalt without any real direction while your idea could be consensed and streamlined. Like a real CYOA, if you will.

Without thinking about it, entirely subconsciously, you are trained by Pathfinder and D&D to safeguard your players. You are taught to coddle them! And when does this subconscious teaching happen? Not in ANY dungeon master resource. It happens before your first adventure, before your very first D20 roll.

It happens when you create characters.

In Pathfinder, character creation takes a ridiculous amount of time. I ran it for about six years, and I saw it take well over an hour, sometimes going up to two for new players. As a GM who understood the system inside and out, I could get it done in about a half hour.

Losing a character in a game with such a painstaking character creation process is absolutely devastating. As a GM, you wonder if that person will bother to make a new character, or if they will just leave, and if they do, who will go with them? Will you even have a game afterwards?

And enemy statblocks are the same way. You look at these massive text blocks that include three different saving throws, the type of hit dice, types and sub-types of creature, and perhaps most hilariously unnecessary, ALL SIX STATS. Who on earth looks at all that and dares think “I’ll make some monsters of my own!”

Please understand, I’m not saying nobody makes their own monsters. I’m saying that it is an undertaking to make a monster with a statblock like that. Figuring out saves, stats, and heaven forbid you want to get CR correct, good luck with testing out that garbage.

Because that sounds like something a LE demon would tell a LG character in a scheme to eliminate/discourage a faltering fellow demon who is considering trying to ascend back to the angelic ranks into even considering seeking an alternate path.
Granted, if the demon fails their ascension and slips back into evil, the LG character is still going to have to bust them (likely literally), but you have to give them a shot at redemption in the case it isn't endangering anyone, since each soul you turn away from the Great Adversary(/ies) is one less resource in his(/their) repertoire, while in most settings destroying a demon's physical body at worse puts them in timeout for later mischief: you can't kill them any more then you can kill a bad idea.

Assuming your god is anything like the Abrahamic one in morals. If not, sure, go nuts to whatever their teachings are.

Ironically, Christian-type demons are rare precisely because they're not so much a race as they are angelic criminals, which completely changes their context.

The problem with UBs above all else is that WotC has forgotten that one of the key aspects of trading card games is rarity. Somehow they forgot this despite inventing it.
For as long as Magic has existed there have been alters, and while most were cringe shit like a totally unrelated image painted over a card, there were also neat alters because there was a level of effort and also exclusivity. Alters were rare.
Then WotC basically started selling more and more "official alters." Some are OK like the borderless shit, people have been doing that for a while. Alternate art, great, it's just more options. Something like UB could have just stayed as alternate art, released occasionally, and it might have even been a treat. Yeah I don't want Spock in my game but maybe I'll see it once in 1000 games and it's just an alternate art for Snapcaster Mage or whatever.
Flash forward to today and every other set is UB with hideous art used for all-new giga-meta cards. There is no God.

So these guys (stealth suits, if you can't see them)
Pretty interesting against a marine team. When the enemy can move + dash + shove a heavy plasma incinerator in your face, stealth becomes a lot less safe. Ended up not controlling much on the objectives, which combined with an equal score on tac op, kill op, and primary meant a final score of 10-15.
Definitely not a conclusive game in regards to how balanced they are, I made plenty of mistakes, but the stealth was a lot less oppressive than me or my opponent expected.
What I want to see now is how they perform against a 2APL team. Losing that extra dash to reach enemies, and not having the same super reliable kill shots that a team like deathwatch has, might make these sneakers a much less fun team to face. I need to see it to confirm it though.

Met many, mostly obvious fetish plays. Go post any ad as a GM and see what kind of characters/applicants you get. It's disturbingly common.
I also played with one for a while, and was friends with him for years outside of the game too.
He played his ideal waifu, fit into the fantasy setting we were playing. It was acceptable solely because he had no off-putting fetish things (basically he was just vanilla). It was still undeniably his waifu and he got constantly teased about it without ever denying it.
I have yet to meet or see a single female character (actually played not just theoretical) that didn't fall into this category. If I did, I'd be open to changing my mind. But the pattern has been unerring thus far in my some ~12 years of playing TTRPGs.
>>
>>97214962
What do you mean a fetish waifu? I get wanting to make a pretty female character, does it go beyond that?
>>
>>97215717
I've specifically seen lolibaba and furry stuff that was unmistakably fetish related.
I didn't play with those people though; the ones I have played with (like mentioned) were just playing their idealized version of a woman but with super powers/magic/whatever matches the setting.
>>
>>97139776
I look for character art references to give me ideas for concepts. People make interesting-looking pictures of women often because they look good. So I play female characters to use those visuals.
>>
>>97214962
Not every time. My first campaign, the DM and I accidentally made each other's fetish waifus and just couldn't understand why the other found it hot.

Hey /tg/ I'm playtesting an initiative system that's been tried before in other systems and is detailed nicely on "Tabletop Curiosity Cabinet"
The system uses Meyer (and Kieth Farrell's modern adaptation) of "Vor, Nach, Gleich, Indes" as steps in a fight.
Basically, the player with the initiative chooses an action ("Vor"). The enemy chooses a reponse ("Nach"). The dice are rolled to determine an outcome ("Gleich") and the movement into the next state ("Indes").
Practically it looks like: Player A chooses a bind. Player B chooses to parry. Both players resolve a dice roll. The resolution will determine who has initiative for the next system.
Very fencing-like, and makes initiative more of a "push-pull" based on success rather than a "you-go, I-go" traditional style.
I believe systems like TRoS and their derivatives (like Song of Swords) use a similar sort of initiative style.

My questions for the thread:
1. While this system works pretty well for individual combats, it struggles when there are multiple combatants. It also falls into the same trap of "you go, I go" which is; in a real fight, you're probably waiting for an opening (e.g. an enemy attacking an ally) to take advantage of in order to strike. I wonder if anyone has creative solutions to this problem?
2. Are there initiative systems that you find work well? Anyone forego initiative entirely in favor of fully narrative initiative (e.g. Daggerheart)?

I too, fence longsword, more from the Lichtenauer school though (meyer is fun as hell though i just love to stab)

As a 1 v 1 duel you could get an interesting system working.
The "you go, i go" style works fine if there's a way to steal an extra go in there or take the Vor.

I had an idea for a card game where the 2 players are constantly discarding some cards at the end of their turn,
keeping a few in hand they like and then drawing fresh ones at the start of the turn to say 7 or something like that.
There's cards for advancing, for retreating for dodging,
There's cards specifically for counters to certain thrusts or cuts.
There's stance cards that'll give you a bonus if your opponent has an opening that's weak
Eventually someone plays a card with a VOR on it to start the rally,
Like an Over cut from left shoulder,
They other player then needs to play a card that will deflect that or dodge or counter it, whatever.
They could just play a parry card, and follow it up with a Riposte, or if they didn't have a riposte they just have a parry.

IMO, balance is an overrated and shitty game design conceit to begin with and irrelevant to having fun.
What actually CAN be important is for players to believe the game is fair, in which case the only barrier for narrative systems is the GMs skill to cater towards the sensibilities of fairness that the group holds. In short, if you can't run narrative systems well, you have a skill issue.

Thanks for entertaining the idea!! Really interesting stuff here.

>The "you go, i go" style works fine if there's a way to steal an extra go in there or take the Vor.
Absolutely. As I have it, the way to take the initiative is to, essentially, win the opposed roll. This might represent finding a strong position bind, a parry to set up the next strike, etc.

The card idea is really intriguing. The biggest issue I have is running into a Song of Swords-esqe "really long list of moves" with various maneuvers that counter others.
This rewards "player" (as opposed to character) system mastery. That being said, I was hoping to parse things down a bit to one, two or maybe a few different choices for each combatant.

Could you tell me what you mean by a Silvers system?

Finishing a tabletop role-playing campaign and giving it an ending is a good feeling.
