Currently working on a Krark the thumbless Jund strategy inspired by Catch-22.Basically "what is good for me is good for the syndicate and everyone owns a share".So right now I am looking for cards that look like they benefit the group, but primarily benefit me, cards like wheel of fortune, cards that let the players buy into my ponzi scheme and big spells that kill anyone with kindness or just generally go well with the high stakes high variance nature of the deck. Lovecraft's protagonists are usually intellectuals. They're highly educated individuals with a lot of knowledge regarding the inner workings of the universe and the nature of society. They lose their minds not because the monsters project a supernatural insanity field that makes people go crazy, but because they realise that a great deal of their knowledge is built on falsehoods and that the universe is far larger and far stranger they ever thought. Their entire identity as educated men disintegrates and the world as they know it is destroyed. So, they lose their minds.Take someone less cerebral who doesn't give a fuck about how things work, who isn't curious or informed about the universe, who just accepts the current state of affairs and adapts to it, whatever it might be. This caveman survivalist would take on deep ones without giving a fuck about how they are supplanting humanity and violating our entire species. He would see Cthulhu as another terrible monster like an orca or a polar bear, some great beast to be feared but not as a sign that his entire reality has been built on a lie, so he wouldn't go insane. He would take one look at non-euclidean horrors and assume that they just look funny and behave in strange and unusual ways, rather than lose his mind over this flagrant disregard for the rules of physics as he understands it.The more intelligent you are and the more you value your intelligence, the more vulnerable you are to Lovecraft's horrors. Conan has the perfect incurious, action-over-intellectualism psychology to face everything that Lovecraft ever devised without blinking.

It's totally unabashed about being some western fantasy of what Japan was like whereas the remake tones that stuff down. I don't think the new adaption captures the spirit of the novel well, it tries too hard to be less weeaboo which removes a lot of the charm, especially that of the thoroughly implausible love story that tracks through the novel and 80s show. The 80s also didn't try to force me to learn Japanese to understand what they were saying in Japanese, unlike the newer one when they left bits unsubtitled so that the viewer could be just as confused as the European characters at times. While I can see some good for leaving off subtitles in some productions, I don't think that helped the story telling in this story.Compare the 1960 sand and sandals epic Spartacus with its wonderful saturated colours, over the top spectacle, square jawed never sets a foot wrong hero to a grimmer film like 2000's Gladiator with its slightly less square jawed and slightly flawed hero who lets his desire for revenge overcloud his judgement, throws in a little brooding, some moral quandaries, some emotional angst over the death of his family. Both very good films and both enjoyable. Same for both Shogun miniseries.While they wasted him and this was not up there with his best work, this was the first thing I saw Toshiro Mifune in before I knew who Toshiro Mifune was.Didn't hurt that it had Yoko Shimada as Mariko either.

It's been 2 weeks since I started playing sorcery with 2 booster boxes. Here are my thoughts> 1 booster box will give you 2 good decks and 1-2 mediocre at best> 2 booster boxes still only gave us 2 even better decks and 1 ok deck with high value cards> art is amazing. I'm feeling the same vibes when I played L5R ccg> multiplayer format will probably replace commander for us but the map I printed is 3mm thick and unfit for transport, on top of being huge> game has 2 flaws from being perfect> needs sleeves as picking the cards up and tokens is tricky>suffers from mid to late game card sandwich syndrome. Since all the cards need to be in a single space to bunker down yet they are in specific positions, they create an unwieldly card stack e.g.Tapped submerged unit with a ward tokenUntapped suberged unit with a stealth tokenSiteTapped avatarUntapped frog tokenuntapped minion with a tokenand so it goes.
