I heard ChatGPT was a decent enough solo DM experience and I decided to try it

>generic human fighter whose job was to guard a princess but failed
>first session starts alright, fought some water soaked zombies and found the princess
>couple of more sessions in there's a global level system which dictates which reality is true and uses human anchors in case it can't stabilize a location
>another couple of sessions in I am now arguing logics with ChatGPT because I got some superpower which lets me create point and relationships between them
>end up this first arc building a system where synthetical ancors replace human anchors and it took me a while to cover all edge cases
>this is at level 4
>explicitly say I do not want to deal with this stuff anymore
>ChatGPT: "You're totally right!" ;^)
>next arc is about a network of reality bending doors in which couriers must transport fragments of reality from door to door to keep the reality in check
>the only way I could disrupt this was by PLACING FUCKING STEPPING STONES IN AN IRREGULAR BUT NON-OBVIOUS WAY
>my fucking god
>write explicity multiple times in the source of the project to not have any other reality bending stuff and all that happened earlier was an exception
>ChatGPT: "You're absolutely right!" ;^)

The idea of a book club is to encourage people to read and discuss books right? Early on you need to get people engaged with the books. After a while when they're accustomed to the activity you can retain them as you experiment with different books.

You're chosen a thoroughly mediocre book. I doubt I'm ever going to read it again. You could have chosen a really good book. You could have chosen a really terrible book, like how people think they're cool for watching "the worst movie ever made". Instead, you chose a book that is below average, very dull, and not worth reading.

Ward was okay with rules, settings, modules, but he's not a good fiction author. I don't know exactly how much Hong influenced things but I can say it wasn't enough for either good or bad.

In terms of following the mechanics of the game, he actually made effort to follow the rules of AD&D and he tied the structure to the computer game well.

And the book suffers for it.

It's just a long slog from one rather uninteresting, implausible scenario to the next. Like how the villain's lair is just outside the city walls, or nearby townsfolk are safe despite the infested temple in the city.

The next book is even worse. The city gets teleported underground. Despite there being no fields for crops or fodder, no streams or lakes for fishing and water, no forests for fuel or hunting, life goes on as normal while wave after wave of monsters assail the city, a city with an impossibly huge contingent of magic-users and clerics repelling the assaults.

>Solars being first out the gate has always been to their detriment each edition.
That's because if you use anyone else as the baseline, the Solars become a nothing burger. Hey, here's a bunch of roided-up DBs that haven't done jack shit in several thousand years and have been obliterated before at the height of their power.
>>
>>97837808
Considering early 1e material, it is the other way around; the devs feared that their fantasy not!WoD wouldn't sell, so they created the Solars to bait a bigger audience to their "woe-is-me self-wanking feast".
And history demonstrated that the WoD-lite splat are a worse introduction point.

So by this logic, "Solars last" would have the same reaction to Infernals, with fans of DBs/Sidereals/Abyssals complaining about them stealing the spotlight.
>>
>>97838002
Difference is Solars are supposed to steal the spotlight, that's their whole thing
>>
>>97838010
The issue is that they will actually steal the spotlight, instead of serving as a bait for the secret hidden masters.

WoD-lite fans already seethe with Solars as is, with Solars truly as "the rock that smash the statue of ages", they would genuinely end up in the suicide watch.

>>
>>97837005
Nta but what I disliked was that it simply isn't race. It's a perfectly fine game I never want to play. You aren't holding a hand chock full of possibilities but have a kind of frustrating "to do" stack everyone can see. Now I'm all for chunky cardboard but drawing from the bag for some reason feels quite cumbersome here, it doesn't mix well and always feels like the pacing bottleneck, the only thing you really have to wait for. Didn't feel like rftgs great mix of strategic and tactical play but rather like just built the least bad development/planet you can from this meager pool.

Does anyone have experience on running two systems simultaneously? I want to inject dungeon crawls with investigative mysteries and the prospect of characters going insane. I figured CoC and D&D would be a good place to start, because I want to move toward a bigger idea I had but need practice.
>>
>>97830819
I've done exactly what you're talking about in GURPS and it worked beautifully.
Also, since CoC is a BRP system, you should look to something like Mythras to integrate dungeon crawling into your game.
Basically, D&D doesn't belong here.
>Not everything has to be D&D. It's not appropriate for many, many types if games. Broaden your horizons.
>>
>>97830819
I ran a game based on the Persona videogames a while back. I used Kids on Bikes to simulate the investigations and free time in reality, letting my players do side stuff to get temporary buffs to their D&D characters. Then once they had discovered the next target/dungeon We switched to D&D where their characters were their Personas and they ran through the dungeon. It ended up being every other week we would switch systems; a week investigating, a week dungeoning. It worked well enough, but I'm sure there's another singular system that could do it both without the need to homebrew so much. I think I would try to stick to one system in the future though. In your case, Maybe something like Arkham Horror RPG covers both the combat and investigation better than the two systems separated.
>>
>>97830819
> Simultaneously
No. But I have homebrewed a system that's a mix of two. And I have had a game where two different core mechanics were used alternatively.

What you describe seems to be the first one. What I would do is find a core system that does what you want your heroes to do most of the time. Kill monsters, open trapped doors, etc. Make sure it needs the least alterations possible, so if you are going to go the Eldritch Horrors' way, no DnD/PF/DH for a game in the 1950s. For a game more like Darkest Dungeon, you go full steam ahead.

Then, you find a game that does the mechanics you wanna tack on it the best, and do just that. IDEALLY, for the sake of consistency, you try to blend the two.

So let's say you want a Darkest Dungeon game, you may want convert PF 1st to introduce CoC elements, you should use CoC horrors and Sanity, but instead of having a Sanity stat, you could alter Wisdom to serve there.

What you could do is multiply a character's Wisdom Score by 5% to obtain a Sanity score that should range from 40% (nat 8) to 90% (nat 18). When a character takes Sanity damage, for each 5% hit, the character takes 1 Wisdom damage that can only be healed with downtime, exactly like the CoC rules tell you. When a character takes X hits, it can receive temporary insanity the same way. And learning Eldritch (or even just Arcane) spells erodes one's sanity.
>>
>>97830819
Are you stupid or something? You're just talking about mixing two different genres or styles of play, you're not talking about two different game systems.

Unless you are literally talking about merging those two game systems in which case I think you're fucking stupid
