Only do this if you have a high quality resin printer. blurry details and especially fdm lines will make shit way more difficult to paint than normal. Unironically just get him some space marines or tyranids depending on what he likes. There's a reason that's what's in the starter set.

(Somewhat of a blog-post, but it is /wip/ related and falls in the same vein as SS posts, so I hope this is ok)
It was my birthday yesterday and my girlfriend got me this as a present, because she knows I like to paint stuff. This is very expensive and she does not have a lot of money, so I felt a bit bad, but I am happy of course. Seems I'll have to move on from shitty speed paints now and begin painting "proper". She said, she hand-picked those colors because they are pretty and I agree. I know what base colors are, but not the rest or how to use them, so I gotta do some research. Very excited to use all those new colors and possibly learn new techniques. Love my gf.
With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint?
>>

Prime and paint, simple as. And you don't have to prime black either, you can prime whatever color you want/need.

Prime any color and just put paint on top of it. Thin your paints and generally work in layers. There's plenty of different ways to put the paint on and plenty of material telling you how to do it.
>>
>>94603885
>With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint?
Your two Contrast paints - Aeldari Emerald and Blood Angels Red - are not gonna work over a black undercoat.

In theory, Base colours will cover better than Later colours, but a black undercoat will make a noticeable difference regardless.

Technical paints are for special purposes. The two you have - Spiritstone Red and Waystone Green - are for quick-and-easy gems (got any Panzees?) in red and green respectively. There are other Technical "paints" like 'Ardcoat (a gloss varnish) and Blood For The Blood God (a blood-spatter/gore paint) that have completely different effects, but still come in the same sized bottles.

Shades are meant to go over something you've already painted to seep into the recesses. The two best known are Nuln Oil (black) and Agrax Earthsahde (brown), but there are quite a few different colours available to give different shading effects to your paint jobs. I used a lot of Athonian Camoshade when I was building my Imperial Bastion.

>>
>>94603885
Decent enough selection, definately workable.
You should only have to paint white if you are using the contrast paints first.
The "base" and "layer" paints will be your bread and butter. Base is a little bit thicker, since it's designed to go on first and really cover over the prime layer, but thinning it lets you use it as a layer paint just fine.
You might be able to mix part of your 2 shade paints in a dropper bottle to get closer to a black/brown shade, which will be more versatile. Shade paints are used for adding darkness to cracks, holes and recesses.
What models are you planning on painting?
>>
>>94604318
>What models are you planning on painting?
My collection is less of an army, say 30 guys with roughly the same paint scheme, and more of a mix-and-match of variety Sci-fi (mostly GW) miniatures. To be exact, the miniatures are: 5x House Orlock goons, 5x House Escher goons, 10x Stargrave Scavengers, 10x Ork Kommandos and the, I'm afraid rather challenging, Adepta Sororitas box, I think there are 10 of them as well.
>You might be able to mix part of your 2 shade paints in a dropper bottle to get closer to a black/brown shade, which will be more versatile.
My dumb ass never considered that, but I will most definitely try it out on my palate and see what color comes out, in the past however, I did not have much success in mixing colors, it always was off, but my skill level is also low, so that might change.
>>
>>94603885
Layer is thinned down version of base paints, as the name implies, you add them up in layers.
Shades are washes, Contrast is their version of Speedpaints.
Technicals are special effects, the stuff she gave you are typically used for gems.
> With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint?
That's fine but you could do with a zenithal or a drybrush. Just be aware of how paints behave as light colors can look splotchy over pure black. Yellow is especially ass over black.
Do something nice for your gf, she sounds like a keeper.

retoasted from last bread because I'm pretty sure there's at least a couple anons who are around sometimes who'd know about this stuff... if they don't materialize I'll have to ask /smg/, but that's an absolute last resort.
>>
>>94604422
Bases generally have black or white (or some combination) to improve their coverage but it desaturates them. They do tend to be thicker but that's not necessarily why they're different. Layers are where you'll get the better saturated colors, but you lose coverage obviously.
>>
>>94604434
Just paint it however you like anon. All the fancy stuff you mentioned is because scalebros tend to put a lot of emphasis on weathering. You can just as well go for a clean look using the same techniques we use for minis. Probably won't look very realistic but should still be nice

You have a lot of models with exposed skin. I'd say the only paints youd need to pick up are a black, a white, and a light tan, otherwise you should be all set to go.

The best advice I can give is that you can be far more creative on colour choices than you may assume.
See picrel, specifically the bottom of the torso. The skin is literally just painted bright green, and it looks natural because it has been intelligently placed to mimic shadows. You might not want to stretch your technical skill this far on your first couple attempts, but it's good to know things like this in case you think it will ever come up.

Hey /wip/, I need some terrain advice. I'm looking to build the typical Mines of Moria terrain piece to introduce MESBG to a few friends. Is there a decent way of cutting XPS/high density EPS straight enough with a knife? I don't own a cutter and I can't afford one right now.

The most common advice is
A)Have good, sharp knife. If you've got one, a box cutter with a fresh blade works well.
B)Make many lighter passes, instead of one big cut. This helps prevent torn/rough edges.
C) Measure twice, cut once. A t-square or right-angle ruler (also called a 'carpenter's square" is very useful for making right angles.
D) use a straight edge, like a metal ruler, to keep your cut from wobbling

Thanks anon. Yes, my biggest fear I guess would be wobbly lines and cuts... I was expecting a metal ruler would help (I have one) but at the same time, it could get a bit wobbly vertically (meaning the cut could be sloped). But I guess that by being careful and cutting slowly I can avoid that, especially if it's a 20mm thick piece only
>>
>>94606897
>Yes, my biggest fear I guess would be wobbly lines and cuts
I haven't started making terrain yet, but I plan on spending next month doing it. I have a feeling that sobbly cuts won't be too bad. If it's XPS foam, you can texture it with a ball of aluminium foil or a rock or something. So imperfect cuts will add some heart to the piece. I also want to try making things with bricks, but I have a feeling I'll need a hot wire cutter to make bricks or it's gonna take too long to cut them all out.
>>
>>94606897
Can you cut a bit into the top and snap the piece off clean? I've never worked with that foam before.
>>
I'm priming these lads tomorrow, but struggling to decide on a color scheme. Obviously the game is very dark shaded, so slapchop would be the obvious go-to, but I only have acrylic paint, not speed paints. My plan is to do my normal zenithal prime, base coat, wash, but then add in really dark edge highlighting to everything.

Anyone have experience painting these with acrylics?

Idk if I'm really feelin' this so far. I think I need to boost the saturation on the lighter parts, irl I think it looks okay but in the photo it's a bit dull.
>>
I've come to realize the primer I used on these resin marines probably wasn't meant for resin...
>>
>>94607034
>so slapchop would be the obvious go-to
Slapchop is never the go to. Just paint them normally. They'll paint like any other miniature with acrylics. Just pick your colours, get your mid tone, mix your low and high tones and put the paint on the model.
>>
>>94607078
You don't know what you've just done...
>>
>>94607060
Looks good. When you add the glowing colours it'll all come together I think.

The game has these super dark lines/shading almost cell-shaded look that I want to get close too. Seems tough to do in acrylics, but maybe I should just pick a super dark low tone, and a heavy wash will do the trick.
>>
>>94607122
>Seems tough to do in acrylics
Why would that be tough to do in acrylics? I guess you were thinking of enamel/oil washes or something? The cartoony look is perfect for acrylics. You just paint it as you see it using the art as a reference, like you would a drawing. So instead of painting his scarf red and doing a wash to get realistic shadows, you paint it red with big black lines to represent the line art. Like look at his outstretched arm for example. You can do that with paint super easy. Just quick strokes in one direction so they look jagged like they are painted on.
>>
>>94607169
Thanks, maybe I'm overthinking it. I don't have much experience (obviously) and I'm used to having a tutorial or at least color palette online to copy.
>>
>>94606188

Yeah I get that. I started with 40k and could only paint things if I had a tutorial and was told all the exact paints to buy. But doing what you're doing will get you out of it. You start painting stuff there is no guide for and you just gotta wing it. You'll get stuff wrong and work it out as you go. Just use the artwork as your main reference point and try and replicate how it looks with your colours and don't be afraid to mix stuff in your palette. I've never painted in a cell shaded or cartoony style so I could be totally wrong as well. It looks fun though. Some of the official examples I'm looking at for those minis look amazing. They aren't super cartoony, but they've used really exaggerated colours and transitions to replicate the art. Like the shadows on the highwayman's face are insanely dark.

Since the style was inspired by Mike Mignola, you could use Hellboy as an inspiration.

> color scheme
I have these miniatures too and my plan was to prime black, drybrush red and paint on every surface that's not black using a zorn palette which would be great colors to use to get that Soulsborne look.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U3xx9fuLaU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrPOgTXigRI
While zorn uses white, yellow ochre, red and ivory black; I would throw in a blue if you'd like.

Juan Hidalgo has done videos about it before. The tldr is that you want to work in sections and before you put paint on, brush the surface with water and then put the paint on. You’ll then use a brush with water in it to soak up excess paint

Here’s a video where he paints a sentinel with Xpress paints

I think I'll try NMM tonight when I finish work. Been building up confidence enough that I think I could do it. NMM swords just look so much better than TMM. I think armour can look better with TMM, but the weapons often look kind of boring. I'm sure there's plenty of tutorials out there. Any ones that stand out?

Put the red on the rest of the guys
After going back in with a normal brush for anything the drybrush mussed, I'm reminded how much I hate vallejo reds. Cover like crap, inconsistent, and extremely prone to airbubbles. I'm just going to up and make my own damn reds from now on.
I anticipate that all the other spots I missed will get colored when I go over everything with an ink wash. Will try mixing them later.

Not the anon you were asking to but those are usually security locks for maintenance and repair crew.
Let's say a business calls you to fix their room sized hydraulic press. Before walking in, aim straight to the control panel, put that shit offline and lock away the control panel under such a security lock and make sure to keep the darn key on you from now on! You don't want anyone walking by and operate the machine while you're still working on it from the inside, so that's why those locks are so bulky and obvious.

>>
>>94607310
I guess it doesn't show up in the photos because they look pretty smooth.
>>
>>94607249
Oh and one thing I forgot to mention. When you're doing an art style like that, it's going to look shit until it's done. There's a few techniques like that where it just looks like you've messed up until the very last step brings it all together. So push through that and don't give up midway.
>>
>>94607420
Oh yeah, now it's popping. This is honestly sort of what I was thinking of when I was saying this >>94607212 and >>94607433

Really bold defining strokes can be hard to bring yourself to put on the model, but when they all go on it all comes together and looks exactly like you want it to.
>>
>>94607422
I think the drybrush + wet palette really helped with basing since it reduces a lot of "moving parts" in the process
The normal brushing was mainly for nooks and crannies like behind the backpack or around the crotch, the primer not really being a resin primer was also noticeable in those areas since the paint slipped off way easier if I wasn't careful
I had another brush ready to collect any paint that was overflowing or bubbling so it turned out fine
>>
>>94607420
Am autism, I keep a .txt file of what I'm doing and hopefully periodic pics to compare with. Sometimes the start is fine but a mid step screwed the pooch, being able to see that in a timeline helps dial in the paintjob in fewer models. Once I get an idea I do a past dress rehearsal with the refined steps to flee how it feels.

C+C on my clanrats for Old World?

I felt like the skin was a little too white and chalky but I was using a mix of Vallejo Basic Skin Tone and Pallid Wych Flesh. I think for something that's a little bit more "wellfed" in the list I might make it a bit more "healthy".
>>

Hey /wip/! I finished painting the models for this pack of Jakhals! I still have the bases to do, and some "blood for the blood god" to add, but it's nice to have the models finished! Almost done!

I don't know anything about these models so I assume it's intentional but the palette is kinda samey, skin blends with both the clothing and metal. Decent craftsmanship though, they're pretty clean

Obviously godhands are objectively the best, but I like the tamiya ones fine too. You can get by with the 5 dollar red/black flush cutters though as long as you don't care about doing a bit more cleanup.
>>
>>94608326
I have these and I like them a lot, the cuts are pretty clean
>>
>>94608197
It's intentional. I finished the bases tonight. I really couldn't bring myself to do maximum effort on a 65 point unit that evaporates if something so much as sneezes in their direction. I kept it muted so when I finally splash some "blood for the blood god" effects on them, the red will (hopefully) pop.

yea. honestly, I'm a bit given to thinking it's actually a supernatural phenomena of sorts. Muses, faeries, you know... something like that. What's the cheapest way to get ahold of a Warhammer miniature to paint? I just need one. Preferably a space marine but I don't really care. I feel like a Warhammer fig is the ultimate test of your painting talent in some ways since you can't blame the plastic. Also would army painter brush on primer and reaper paints work okay on a Warhammer fig? I've only painting reaper minis, nolzurs minis, and some Kickstarter minis before. I'd like to spend less than 10 dollars on the figurine. And preferably one I can show off some painting skill.

You can just say you already play and ask for the free mini of the month. That is not the entry primaris/sigmarine but usually a random model, tied to that month's big releases. I got a deathwing terminator in summer when I visited a GW store during vacations.
The store manager asked me to sit and assemble it in the store and when I asked why, he explained that they do that to prevent people from gathering those free sprues of minis each months and then resell them.on eBay. So I sat down with some other dudes present and built it, but it was free.

Why?
if he just picked it up its probably upside down by how his hands are placed, and it has to snow A LOT to build a layer of snow that fast

if he conjured it or ripped it from a wall it makes even less sense
>>
>>94609326
His hair is really whipping to the side, so I'm guessing it's a blizzard or very windy. So there would be a little bit of snow build up on one side of it while he's aiming. Definitely won't be like a whole layer on the top, just a scattering following the wind direction.

>They do this stuff in US?
Absolutely! The first hit is free, right?

Even the little one-man stores will give you your choice of a Space Marine or Stormcast Eternal, and, if the manager/sole employee has time to spare, a free painting lesson to go with it. The aim is, as >>94609170 says, is to see if they can get you coming back, get hooked, and get invested.

Additionally, GW sends a big box of the "mini of the month" to all of its stores. They are a limited stock, so about two weeks into the month, they will probably run out. Usually, it's some line trooper of a faction, but not always; this month is a Skaven model, but I got a Deathwing Knight once month!

>but is it not a matter of principle?

It might be, if you care about it and approach it from a certain type of collectors point of view.
If all you want is a particular sculpt to paint and/or play with it and the recast is not THAT horrible. Why would it matter?
for example, i wanted the good looking (original) termi chaplain on my shelf. Its a recast because i did not find the real one in metal (the recast is metal) for a decent price.
So for me, its a non-issue in this case. If i had bought it on ebay, thinking and hoping for an original (and maybe even paying a lot for it) only to find out i was scammed, then it would be a different story.

Thinking about a color scheme for some Inquisition troopers in armor. Requisitioned from a tunnel rat regiment, equipped for hive city fighting. So far narrowed down to
>standard red cloth, black armor
>vallejo royal blue cloth, tan armor
>mustard yellow cloth, green-black armor
I have the paints for the first two already and would have to order the third. I don't love the first one, in part because it's what everyone who does Inquisition does. I like the second one and have wanted to do that combo for a while, but maybe these are not the models to do it with. The third one I *really* like in theory, and think would work best, but I don't have the paints physically in hand to test how they'd work out, and the brand (AK) is a pain in the ass to get here (at minimum $30 for 2 paints, accounting for shipping).
Thoughts? Other schemes I may not have considered? I have some time before I get around to painting these guys, other deadlines coming up first, just planning ahead.
>>
>>94611063
I don't remember how much I paid. Probably not a huge amount because for generic rank and file I grab good deals as I find them on eBay or reseller sites. It's more a collector thing. I could resculpt the ugly parts or hide them with the paintjob or basing elements but it would still annoy me knowing it's a fake.

My first paintjob with my gfs paints! (With the exception of the yellow mask)
Truth be told, I felt like I have no idea what I'm doing, haha, having all those new paints suddenly. I used a wash on the gun and it looks cool, but I am not too happy with the rest, I am a beginner, but still.
Also, damn I should not have cheaped out on brushes, they lose their tip left and right, half of them sre gone already.
Any tips or recommendations, if you consider the paints I have? >>94603885
>>
>>94611430
might have to thin them a bit more, but it's not really that you did a "bad" job, but more like you're not done. instead of relying on speedpaints doing all your highlights and volumes. you now have to do all that yourself. don't throw out your old speedpaints, they can make for good washes to do some of the shadowing. for highlighting it's up to you, can try painting some volumes or just go with standard edge highlights, or nothing at all since I would argue shadowing is enough sometimes

Sand and pva glue in my pill bottles to get them bottom heavy, and it really does help with the shaky hands. Also super convenient that when I pin I can just poke a hole in the cap and secure it from the bottom, I can leave the pin long in case I'm not sure how thick the base will be.
>>
>>94611430
nobody knows what they are doing when first starting out so dont worry about that
keep the theme simple and concentrate on learning brush control like doing a coloring book with thin layers
in time you will learn how to "cheat" with washes but first you have to stick to basics

Those are pretty solid recasts and frankly some of the issues on the middle one look like it might be down to poor storage plus a lead-alloy model instead of straight tin. Some of my Marauder rats are pretty beat up too.
>but it'll annoy me..
Bro. Look at it this way. You now have two fairly early metal Skaven models that you don't need to feel bad about hacking to shit for conversions. One of those little guys is begging to be your new unit standard bearer or a jezzail's front prop holder.

>on the note of Marauder miniatures and recasts..
Impact Minis has authorized resin recasts of a bunch of Tim Prow's old Heartreaker-era skaven. Bundled with other stuff because Impact kind of sucks, but they have the bazooka, mortar, and kamikaze rocket rat in an artillery pack, as well as a mix of rank-and-file and command rats packed in with a few old Kev Adams squig-demons and a succubus.

Okay, aside from yellow markings and occasionally puddle of rust, what else would you add to these bases? I painted darker grey over black primer here and drybrushed with light grey but I wonder if I didn't lose all shadows here. At the other hand, using wash could be problematic since it's paper pulp.

>Was it Citadel licensing a third party to do Warhammer stuff like they did for Marauder Miniatures?
It's more hostile than Marauder was. Big Bob Watts decided he was sick of getting screwed by GW, left, hired several ex-GW sculptors GW had also dumped or screwed over, and they made their own company. Which happened (among other things) to make stuff that looked exactly like the ones they had previously been making for GW. Kev Adams did a bunch more goblins, dwarfs, and demons; Tim Prow did Elves and "ratmen", Elliot and Lewis did Chaos, Undead, and knights. They had slightly more primitive molding facilities so some of the early miniatures are pretty awkward, but they hit their stride pretty quick and kept doing the Oldhammer style for almost a decade after GW gave up on it.

Is it a scalpel? Do blades fall off those easily? I never saw the appeal of actual scalpels over xacto knifes. It's not like the blades aren't cheap and replaceable for those too.

People round here used to use oven cleaner to strip models. Idk why though, isopropyl alcohol is the best option and people just pretend like using a bunch of weird brand shit is better.

>I will never understand why ppl do that insead of getting a xacto knife
Blades and handles are cheap as fuck, easily-accessed, and if you're in the industry you can get them even cheaper. Actual modeling knives can cost like 6-10x as much as a scalpel in some countries, or not even be imported, but scalpels are a thing almost everywhere.
But he's probably just a cheap bastard.
>>94613578
It's presumably to use it as a moldline scraper. That way you can grip the blade and do some precision maneuvering without taking your finger off.

Isopropyl, acetone, and potassium hydroxide with detergents (AKA LA's Totally Awesome) all have their uses for different materials. Iso fucks up some resins, acetone absolutely destroys everything that isn't metal. LA's is a quarter the price of iso, not flammable, and works about as well. It also doesn't destroy mystery meat models if you do a lot of ebay rescues.

What's a good drybrush colour over AK's AFV Earth Brown colour after using Earth Brown for the primary bases colour?

make your own and write it down so it stays consistent
>>
>>94614658
Now that you mention it, it is a good idea to write down the basing recipe. Not sure why such a thought didn't occur to me.

For drybrushing the base to make the texture more visible should one pick a highlight colour (like an edge highlight colour) or a contrasting colour?

well when this is what you are working with the texture is least of your problems
i base my faba models with mournfang brown and 40k models with abaddon black

>well when this is what you are working with the texture is least of your problems
That's true.
My problem is that while I found the right shade of brown for my dirt bases I am yet to find a colour that works nicely as a drybrush highlight over the brown painted sand.
That's what cheap MDF bases are for but I am open to suggestions as possibly a way to save time from testing.

for black you cant go wrong with dawnstone and admistratum grey
for brown just mix the base with 50/50 ushabti bone and highlight with pure ushabti bone
just my 2 cents hopefully it helps
>>
>>94614788
>brown just mix the base with 50/50 ushabti bone and highlight with pure ushabti bone
Alright I'll try mixing the brown paint with AK pale sand and then highlight with pure pale sand. I'll see how that goes.
Thank you.

normal playground sand put trough a colander on a really windy day to get rid of all the fine material
pick out all the largest stones for basing and add about 1/10 of the coarse ones into the mix for variety
sand basing is apparently making a comeback of sorts after that store bought basing goo

I wouldn't be able to either. In person it's slightly turning the red slightly colder, pulling it away from being too close to orange, which is good enough for me
This is as far as I'm going tonight, the incompatible primer problem really came down on me as the base layer started falling off in places like thighs or the weapons. I'll probably take a toothbrush and some soapy wayer to the models that got hit real bad and redo them with rustoleum primer.
>>
>>94614994
the basecoat looks just fine dont strip them
what you need is a clear plan and solid scheme to go by not different hues of red

Probably not as useful, in terms of conditioning the bristles, but it still does the job of getting paint out of the bristles just fine.
