New desk ornament
After much rough moving and one wrong city, the gift from U.K. is here, and while box is beat up, most of it seems to be fine
>>94603061Huge thanks for the candle, the bubble wrap and the good metal models in there, though as per your card don't worry, I believe most of those models are not lead based ;)
>>94603064Seeing the neat pile of historical dudes, those are for sure going directly onto bases and being painted up as colorful bundle of knight fellows.
>>94603064Sadly, I do believe the plastic dwarfs in goblin hewer crew were a casualty, but the rest seems to be mostly fine and I am frankly mad enough to try to strip this and fix it up next year, just because this is a really fucking funny model
>>94603076Lastly, huge thanks on the two orks, santa ork will be a fun one to put together, and having built ghaz before to make some custom characters, can confirm metal ghaz is really fucking good model! Huge thanks for this all anon, will be fun to build and paint
>94603122not even worth a (You)
>>94603122Go back you utter faggot.
>>94603136Do we have some sort of troll nowdays just angry that people can be happy with a gift?
>>94603176Probably some /v/ tourist that saw the thread on page 1 and couldn't help himself
>>94603182Makes me think of something like that /v/ does nowdays seem to have entire thing of obsessing over being sad and misserable so showing having joy in life to them must be rage inducing.
Any critique on my plan for my kurnoth hunters before I start painting them today? Also I painted a goth sister of battle face as practice last night but it's too terrible to post, I have to re-do it and fix the eyes. You're welcome for the update.
>>94603262make the eyes purple
RepostingI got a response from the recasters about asking for a refund>You can get new sets of proper quality instead of those that arrived defective.is it really worth it? more resin models seems like the last thing I want to deal with
>>94603395>is it really worth it?How can anyone answer this for you Anon? You want the models replaced, then let him send you new ones. Or dont. Who cares? What kind of answer do you expect?
>my friend is very very close to the edge and taking the jump in buying models, brushes, etc.>"Don't tempt me" he said>I'm currently printing a wet palette for him to push him over the edge
>>94603438How does one print a wet palette? Also good for you.
>>94603031Maryland-anon, I haven't forgottened about you. It's been a trying month.
>>946034483D printer, I know he could just use a plastic box and some spongesBUT with me spending time to print it and gifting it to him I'm creating more pressure and forcing him to join the hobby
>>94603545You could also do some custom shit on the tray, like his name or something.
>>94603438Print some characters for him.
>>94603545oh okay that makes sense. I forgot 3d printing existed.
>>94603545>BUT with me spending time to print it and gifting it to him I'm creating more pressure and forcing him to join the hobby
>>94603573Only do this if you have a high quality resin printer. blurry details and especially fdm lines will make shit way more difficult to paint than normal. Unironically just get him some space marines or tyranids depending on what he likes. There's a reason that's what's in the starter set.
>>94603560I plan to print and then put a texture plate on the lid (something like pic related)>>94603573>>94603583I also have a resin printer, I think I can hook him fully with the release of TC he really liked the setting
>>94603049More of my desk ornaments, blue crab thanks to my SS
>>94603822Nooow, I remember you...
(Somewhat of a blog-post, but it is /wip/ related and falls in the same vein as SS posts, so I hope this is ok)It was my birthday yesterday and my girlfriend got me this as a present, because she knows I like to paint stuff. This is very expensive and she does not have a lot of money, so I felt a bit bad, but I am happy of course. Seems I'll have to move on from shitty speed paints now and begin painting "proper". She said, she hand-picked those colors because they are pretty and I agree. I know what base colors are, but not the rest or how to use them, so I gotta do some research. Very excited to use all those new colors and possibly learn new techniques. Love my gf.With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint?
>>94603885>she hand-picked those colors because they are prettybased
>>94603885Prime and paint, simple as. And you don't have to prime black either, you can prime whatever color you want/need.
>>94603885>happy for you black kid image.jpg
>>94603881Lmfao yes my goober
>>94603885Prime any color and just put paint on top of it. Thin your paints and generally work in layers. There's plenty of different ways to put the paint on and plenty of material telling you how to do it.
>>94603885>With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint?Your two Contrast paints - Aeldari Emerald and Blood Angels Red - are not gonna work over a black undercoat. In theory, Base colours will cover better than Later colours, but a black undercoat will make a noticeable difference regardless.Technical paints are for special purposes. The two you have - Spiritstone Red and Waystone Green - are for quick-and-easy gems (got any Panzees?) in red and green respectively. There are other Technical "paints" like 'Ardcoat (a gloss varnish) and Blood For The Blood God (a blood-spatter/gore paint) that have completely different effects, but still come in the same sized bottles.Shades are meant to go over something you've already painted to seep into the recesses. The two best known are Nuln Oil (black) and Agrax Earthsahde (brown), but there are quite a few different colours available to give different shading effects to your paint jobs. I used a lot of Athonian Camoshade when I was building my Imperial Bastion.
>>94604040A lot of information in this post, thank you,
>>94603822Reminds me of Crablante from One-Punch Man
>>94603885Decent enough selection, definately workable. You should only have to paint white if you are using the contrast paints first. The "base" and "layer" paints will be your bread and butter. Base is a little bit thicker, since it's designed to go on first and really cover over the prime layer, but thinning it lets you use it as a layer paint just fine. You might be able to mix part of your 2 shade paints in a dropper bottle to get closer to a black/brown shade, which will be more versatile. Shade paints are used for adding darkness to cracks, holes and recesses. What models are you planning on painting?
>>94604318>What models are you planning on painting? My collection is less of an army, say 30 guys with roughly the same paint scheme, and more of a mix-and-match of variety Sci-fi (mostly GW) miniatures. To be exact, the miniatures are: 5x House Orlock goons, 5x House Escher goons, 10x Stargrave Scavengers, 10x Ork Kommandos and the, I'm afraid rather challenging, Adepta Sororitas box, I think there are 10 of them as well.>You might be able to mix part of your 2 shade paints in a dropper bottle to get closer to a black/brown shade, which will be more versatile. My dumb ass never considered that, but I will most definitely try it out on my palate and see what color comes out, in the past however, I did not have much success in mixing colors, it always was off, but my skill level is also low, so that might change.
>>94603885Layer is thinned down version of base paints, as the name implies, you add them up in layers.Shades are washes, Contrast is their version of Speedpaints.Technicals are special effects, the stuff she gave you are typically used for gems.> With those paints and using black primer, do I still have to paint my mini white before starting or can I just prime -> paint? That's fine but you could do with a zenithal or a drybrush. Just be aware of how paints behave as light colors can look splotchy over pure black. Yellow is especially ass over black.Do something nice for your gf, she sounds like a keeper.
>still contemplating them mf boats (thinking about a 1/700 scale USS New Jersey)>studying the current meta for painting them>fuggin enamel washes, oil paints, solvents, itty bitty masking tape, ect>okay, actually this shit is getting kinda out of hand with the new materials and techniquesWould I be crazy to just say fuck it and drybrush the superstructure/guns instead of doing all that fancy shit? Honestly, I just wanted a fun side project.retoasted from last bread because I'm pretty sure there's at least a couple anons who are around sometimes who'd know about this stuff... if they don't materialize I'll have to ask /smg/, but that's an absolute last resort.
>>94604422Bases generally have black or white (or some combination) to improve their coverage but it desaturates them. They do tend to be thicker but that's not necessarily why they're different. Layers are where you'll get the better saturated colors, but you lose coverage obviously.
>>94604434Just paint it however you like anon. All the fancy stuff you mentioned is because scalebros tend to put a lot of emphasis on weathering. You can just as well go for a clean look using the same techniques we use for minis. Probably won't look very realistic but should still be nice
>>94604434Eavy metal destroyer. Evil sunz style. Do it.
>>94603438First taste is free.
>>94604379You have a lot of models with exposed skin. I'd say the only paints youd need to pick up are a black, a white, and a light tan, otherwise you should be all set to go.The best advice I can give is that you can be far more creative on colour choices than you may assume. See picrel, specifically the bottom of the torso. The skin is literally just painted bright green, and it looks natural because it has been intelligently placed to mimic shadows. You might not want to stretch your technical skill this far on your first couple attempts, but it's good to know things like this in case you think it will ever come up.
>>94603885Start looking at wedding rings ASAP
Okay, they are all primed and ready to sit there in various stages of unfinished-ness all winter.>tfw they just look like unpainted minisI tried a new medium grey during the zenithal steps, and it's a bit darker than my usual one...
>>94604827>unpainted minisI meant "bare plastic" minis
>character is going to be wearing white cloth over brown furShould I be adding brown to the shadows then? All the areas that are close to the fur.I'm not sure how to do it without looking like I just fouled my white (using an airbrush)
>take 10 necrons>prime them chrome>nuln oil shade>95% finishedyep! another day's hard work.
>>94603438He will end up playing Infinity, this is a threat.
Woah, you (two?) really knocked this one out of the park! I'd actually been eyeing that Archmagos for a while, so this is just perfect... I'll definitely be making use of those Castellax as well! Thanks a bunch; I'm very happy.
>>94605377And the interior of the card, of course.
>>94605384It would be funny if you to have sex in 2025
Finished my tournament roster. Still need to do a couple more linemen if I want to play these guys in league, but super happy with the work done so far.
Anyone else being /grinched/?
>>94605487
>>94605487Looks good.Bloodbowl is a strange game.
>>94605492you haven't been officially grinched until at least after christmas.

>>94605737My anon's package reached his country today, can't wait to see if he likes the stuff

What kind of plasticard do I want to use to make cloaks? I guess what I am after if thicknessI think hitting them with a heat gun like when you make a flag would be faster than sculpting because I want a lot
Next year I'm gonna put something really fucked up in my secret santa giftI'm gonna put in a box of a really expensive model but fill it with sprues of cheaper and smaller models then eat the big model sprue

>>94605377Glad you like it anon!Yeah it was two people who sent it, she bought the priest and I bought the robots. We've both been playing a lot of heresy and thought the models would make for sick dark mech.
>>94603026Ork Trukk proxy. Weathering effects will be next, first time I do them. Should I use some dirt color or silver color for chips in paint?
Practising faces
Hey /wip/, I need some terrain advice. I'm looking to build the typical Mines of Moria terrain piece to introduce MESBG to a few friends. Is there a decent way of cutting XPS/high density EPS straight enough with a knife? I don't own a cutter and I can't afford one right now.Essentially I want to do something like pic related. Might not even bother with XPS and go for EPS if I want to do just a quick, simple job, but I don't want it looking too jagged or crooked cuts. Any advice?
>>94605922do it, do it!
Started this thing with Xpress colors and now I'm moving into acrylic layers, glazes and cleaning things up. Any ideas for colors to quiet this clowncar kroxigor down just a touch? Trying to keep things vibrant.

>>94606325Deliberately
>>94606332oh xenos are getting the finger alright
>>94606291
>>94606373Bringing colors back in line is typically a job for washes but it's possible to do it with xpress type paints diluted with respective medium, I haven't done it before but I'm gearing up to try it. Could try washing each color with an xpress of a shade lower
>>94603913That swamp monster is dope.
>>94603913What are the locks for? Too big for a chastity cage.
>>94606652The beast
>>94606209The most common advice is A)Have good, sharp knife. If you've got one, a box cutter with a fresh blade works well.B)Make many lighter passes, instead of one big cut. This helps prevent torn/rough edges.C) Measure twice, cut once. A t-square or right-angle ruler (also called a 'carpenter's square" is very useful for making right angles.D) use a straight edge, like a metal ruler, to keep your cut from wobbling
>>94606662But I said they were too small for a chastity cage.
>>94606313Needs a dog stickin' his head out the window, and the guys arm propped up on the sill holdin' a beer. But looks damn good
Nuka kitten is so fucking autistic.
Tested out some contrast paints on extra armiger armor panels that I had primed black and overbrushed leadbelcher. They all came out kinda streaky, is there a way to deal with that on flat surfaces like those armor panels? No pics because my dumb ass already stripped them
Touched up the snail and I finished the hedge dragon! I think my players will get a kick out of them
>>94606761Could varnish the surface to change how the paints spread
Giant bat in progress, I got seven of them so I think I'm gonna do rainbow crystal colors for unit identifiers. How do guys like the yellow brown and wings?
And ogre WIP.C&C always welcome
>>94606801Nice cocc
>>94606848The bat has a pp too
>>94606863Oh yeah. Nice cocc
>>94606668Thanks anon. Yes, my biggest fear I guess would be wobbly lines and cuts... I was expecting a metal ruler would help (I have one) but at the same time, it could get a bit wobbly vertically (meaning the cut could be sloped). But I guess that by being careful and cutting slowly I can avoid that, especially if it's a 20mm thick piece only
>>94606897>Yes, my biggest fear I guess would be wobbly lines and cutsI haven't started making terrain yet, but I plan on spending next month doing it. I have a feeling that sobbly cuts won't be too bad. If it's XPS foam, you can texture it with a ball of aluminium foil or a rock or something. So imperfect cuts will add some heart to the piece. I also want to try making things with bricks, but I have a feeling I'll need a hot wire cutter to make bricks or it's gonna take too long to cut them all out.
>>94606897Can you cut a bit into the top and snap the piece off clean? I've never worked with that foam before.
I'm priming these lads tomorrow, but struggling to decide on a color scheme. Obviously the game is very dark shaded, so slapchop would be the obvious go-to, but I only have acrylic paint, not speed paints. My plan is to do my normal zenithal prime, base coat, wash, but then add in really dark edge highlighting to everything.Anyone have experience painting these with acrylics?
Test modelIdk if I'm really feelin' this so far. I think I need to boost the saturation on the lighter parts, irl I think it looks okay but in the photo it's a bit dull.
I've come to realize the primer I used on these resin marines probably wasn't meant for resin...
>>94607034>so slapchop would be the obvious go-toSlapchop is never the go to. Just paint them normally. They'll paint like any other miniature with acrylics. Just pick your colours, get your mid tone, mix your low and high tones and put the paint on the model.
>>94607078You don't know what you've just done...
>>94607060Looks good. When you add the glowing colours it'll all come together I think.
>>94607094The game has these super dark lines/shading almost cell-shaded look that I want to get close too. Seems tough to do in acrylics, but maybe I should just pick a super dark low tone, and a heavy wash will do the trick.
>>94607122>Seems tough to do in acrylicsWhy would that be tough to do in acrylics? I guess you were thinking of enamel/oil washes or something? The cartoony look is perfect for acrylics. You just paint it as you see it using the art as a reference, like you would a drawing. So instead of painting his scarf red and doing a wash to get realistic shadows, you paint it red with big black lines to represent the line art. Like look at his outstretched arm for example. You can do that with paint super easy. Just quick strokes in one direction so they look jagged like they are painted on.
>>94607169Thanks, maybe I'm overthinking it. I don't have much experience (obviously) and I'm used to having a tutorial or at least color palette online to copy.
>>94606188Good face, like the subtle stubble on the chin as well. Nice shadows and warm highlights.
>>94607183Yeah I get that. I started with 40k and could only paint things if I had a tutorial and was told all the exact paints to buy. But doing what you're doing will get you out of it. You start painting stuff there is no guide for and you just gotta wing it. You'll get stuff wrong and work it out as you go. Just use the artwork as your main reference point and try and replicate how it looks with your colours and don't be afraid to mix stuff in your palette. I've never painted in a cell shaded or cartoony style so I could be totally wrong as well. It looks fun though. Some of the official examples I'm looking at for those minis look amazing. They aren't super cartoony, but they've used really exaggerated colours and transitions to replicate the art. Like the shadows on the highwayman's face are insanely dark.
>>94607034>>94607122Since the style was inspired by Mike Mignola, you could use Hellboy as an inspiration.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OeEbv_Ramk> color schemeI have these miniatures too and my plan was to prime black, drybrush red and paint on every surface that's not black using a zorn palette which would be great colors to use to get that Soulsborne look.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U3xx9fuLaUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrPOgTXigRIWhile zorn uses white, yellow ochre, red and ivory black; I would throw in a blue if you'd like. Also> Mythic Gamesrip bozos
>>94607214Another day wanting to cum to KDM.
>>94606761Juan Hidalgo has done videos about it before. The tldr is that you want to work in sections and before you put paint on, brush the surface with water and then put the paint on. You’ll then use a brush with water in it to soak up excess paintHere’s a video where he paints a sentinel with Xpress paintshttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mIeLOh50NOA&t=1s
>>94603031AK of Uruma Japan, your package will be posted in the morning! Expedited so hopefully you get it before the 25th.
>>94603031JV of Ohio, I got your package. Will provide photos later.
>>94607212>>94607214Appreciate it anons, this is a big help
I think I'll try NMM tonight when I finish work. Been building up confidence enough that I think I could do it. NMM swords just look so much better than TMM. I think armour can look better with TMM, but the weapons often look kind of boring. I'm sure there's plenty of tutorials out there. Any ones that stand out?
Put the red on the rest of the guysAfter going back in with a normal brush for anything the drybrush mussed, I'm reminded how much I hate vallejo reds. Cover like crap, inconsistent, and extremely prone to airbubbles. I'm just going to up and make my own damn reds from now on.I anticipate that all the other spots I missed will get colored when I go over everything with an ink wash. Will try mixing them later.
>>94606675Not the anon you were asking to but those are usually security locks for maintenance and repair crew.Let's say a business calls you to fix their room sized hydraulic press. Before walking in, aim straight to the control panel, put that shit offline and lock away the control panel under such a security lock and make sure to keep the darn key on you from now on! You don't want anyone walking by and operate the machine while you're still working on it from the inside, so that's why those locks are so bulky and obvious.
>>94607344That makes a lot of sense.
>>94607101thx friend.Starting to come together now a bit closer to what I was imagining.Anyone else do test models and then just not record what you did at all?
>>94607310I guess it doesn't show up in the photos because they look pretty smooth.
>>94607249Oh and one thing I forgot to mention. When you're doing an art style like that, it's going to look shit until it's done. There's a few techniques like that where it just looks like you've messed up until the very last step brings it all together. So push through that and don't give up midway.
>>94607420Oh yeah, now it's popping. This is honestly sort of what I was thinking of when I was saying this >>94607212 and >>94607433Really bold defining strokes can be hard to bring yourself to put on the model, but when they all go on it all comes together and looks exactly like you want it to.
>>94607422I think the drybrush + wet palette really helped with basing since it reduces a lot of "moving parts" in the processThe normal brushing was mainly for nooks and crannies like behind the backpack or around the crotch, the primer not really being a resin primer was also noticeable in those areas since the paint slipped off way easier if I wasn't careful I had another brush ready to collect any paint that was overflowing or bubbling so it turned out fine
>>94607420Am autism, I keep a .txt file of what I'm doing and hopefully periodic pics to compare with. Sometimes the start is fine but a mid step screwed the pooch, being able to see that in a timeline helps dial in the paintjob in fewer models. Once I get an idea I do a past dress rehearsal with the refined steps to flee how it feels.
>>94607420>Anyone else do test models and then just not record what you did at all?All the time.
C+C on my clanrats for Old World?I felt like the skin was a little too white and chalky but I was using a mix of Vallejo Basic Skin Tone and Pallid Wych Flesh. I think for something that's a little bit more "wellfed" in the list I might make it a bit more "healthy".
>>94607687Ew the skin is gross. Works though. They look like hairless little fucking mutants.
Hey /wip/! I finished painting the models for this pack of Jakhals! I still have the bases to do, and some "blood for the blood god" to add, but it's nice to have the models finished! Almost done!
>>94607687I feel like the skin could use some shading and more contrasting bases would work better.>>94607782I don't know anything about these models so I assume it's intentional but the palette is kinda samey, skin blends with both the clothing and metal. Decent craftsmanship though, they're pretty clean
Say something nice about my ghastly
Anyone have a good recommendation for cutters/nippers?While trying to cannibalize a piece for a kitbash I kinda ruined mine
>>94608326Obviously godhands are objectively the best, but I like the tamiya ones fine too. You can get by with the 5 dollar red/black flush cutters though as long as you don't care about doing a bit more cleanup.
>>94608326I have these and I like them a lot, the cuts are pretty clean
>>94608197It's intentional. I finished the bases tonight. I really couldn't bring myself to do maximum effort on a 65 point unit that evaporates if something so much as sneezes in their direction. I kept it muted so when I finally splash some "blood for the blood god" effects on them, the red will (hopefully) pop.
Gonna try to build my pathfinders in the next 2 days so i can prime them before it starts raining, they seem like a pain in the ass to assemble though
What is your favorite homemade painting handle, /wip/?
>>94608437pill bottles. they come in assorted sizes, fit nice in the hand, and you can even fill it with something if you want it to have more weight (might be helpful for shaky hand frens)
>>94608437I use some of the big old AK pots for their washes. With a bit of blu tack on them.I have proper painting handles but I like the pot a lot better.
I did some glowie effects. face needs some work I think, but generally I'm starting to like how it's coming out.>>94608437Prescription bottles. God I have so many of them.
>>94603031>>94607244As promised, the pictures. My SS gave me some banshee looking figures (ngl, that single contact point kind of makes me nervous), a craft knife set and a brush holder.
>>94608483Olynder is a kino mini, nice
>>94608483And he went all out with the snacks. Thanks again JV from Ohio, hope you got something good too.
You guys ever get days where your brush control feels so good that it's like someone else has taken over? Sometimes I try and edge highlight and it's just all smudges. Other times it's so clean.
>>94608589>so good that it's like someone else has taken overyea. honestly, I'm a bit given to thinking it's actually a supernatural phenomena of sorts. Muses, faeries, you know... something like that. Realistically, the rational part of me says it's probably just a subtle result of being better rested/in better spirits some days, but the results that I see don't really seem corelated with any such factor.
>>94608604Yeah I think it has a lot to do having a plan and having confidence. If you don't know what you're doing you hesitate and second guess yourself.
Thank you, anon. I don't even know where to begin with all this. The raider seems like a big scary project for me at the moment, but I can't wait to give it a try after all the Quar. The grass and flowers gonna fit those guys perfectly. Also the brush soap was a great pick, because I forgot to buy one the last time I ordered stuff.

>>94608907At least 30.
>>94607310Are they primed?

What's the cheapest way to get ahold of a Warhammer miniature to paint? I just need one. Preferably a space marine but I don't really care. I feel like a Warhammer fig is the ultimate test of your painting talent in some ways since you can't blame the plastic. Also would army painter brush on primer and reaper paints work okay on a Warhammer fig? I've only painting reaper minis, nolzurs minis, and some Kickstarter minis before. I'd like to spend less than 10 dollars on the figurine. And preferably one I can show off some painting skill.
>>94609105Go to GW store. Ask for mini of the month and free primaris. There you go, two free miniatures
>>94609105Just go into an official store. They have a free space marine or s0icast mini giveaway for newcomers.
>>94609113>>94609109They do this stuff in US? I remember visiting one in my (capital) city and I was offered to paint one at store itself, I assumed I would need to pay for it later.
>>94609133It's for ones all over the worldI painted one in tokyo after an odd encounter
>>94609133I assume they do.
>>94609133They give you a free marine and offer to show you how to assemble and paint. The purpose of course is to get you to leave the store with a box of marines and a bunch of painting supplies but you can just take the free mini.
>>94609133They make you touch it and then they charge you $59.95 for the mini because now they can't sell it anymore.
>>94609113>siocast
>>94609170This is for newbies tho.You can just say you already play and ask for the free mini of the month. That is not the entry primaris/sigmarine but usually a random model, tied to that month's big releases. I got a deathwing terminator in summer when I visited a GW store during vacations. The store manager asked me to sit and assemble it in the store and when I asked why, he explained that they do that to prevent people from gathering those free sprues of minis each months and then resell them.on eBay. So I sat down with some other dudes present and built it, but it was free.
Ice chunk is done. I don't know how I managed to get it exactly how I wanted it. I'll add snow to the top, but probably after I paint the whole thing.
>>94608736Oh nice it arrived already, way faster than I expected. I really encourage you to give the panel liners a try, they're a lot of fun to use. I forgot to mention that in the card, those eyeshadow applicators work really well for cleaning up the enamels with thinner.
>painted half my army in a color scheme I grew to hateN-now what? Continue down the path of switch halfway through? Both options kinda suck.
>>94609247>Stutter typing
>>94609241Nice one, really sells the effect
>>94609247What do you hate about it? Maybe switch to a new painting project to give yourself a break?
>>94609241That looks fantastic, is it just drybrush?
>>94609247Switch halfway, and then once you're done look back at them and you might start liking the old scheme better, otherwise you'll just need to strip half your army
>>94609295Nah it's just a retarded mix of stuff. Starting with ink and acrylic mixes, then ink layers, then translucent paint and fluorescent paints stippled on, then acrylic and fluorescent paint mixes stippled on, then I just sorta flicked the brush over edges going lighter and lighter until I got to white. It ended up being a bit of a drybrush but using a normal brush.
>>94609241>I'll add snow to the topWhy? if he just picked it up its probably upside down by how his hands are placed, and it has to snow A LOT to build a layer of snow that fastif he conjured it or ripped it from a wall it makes even less sense
>>94609326His hair is really whipping to the side, so I'm guessing it's a blizzard or very windy. So there would be a little bit of snow build up on one side of it while he's aiming. Definitely won't be like a whole layer on the top, just a scattering following the wind direction.
Still needs cleanup, but getting some guys together for skirmish games. 8 built, 3 to go.
>>94609339fair, add some to his hair too then
>>94609363Yep that's exactly the plan
>>94609374can't wait
>>94603031Dutch santa, your package arrived safely. Thanks a lot! Lots of food, base clutter, small plastic men, panel line to replace my shitty marker one and a really cool looking boardgame. Now I'll just put everything back in the box and painfully wait until christmas, can't wait to paint and play with the battletech mechs
Good sir! How did you ever find me out!? I've had an abyssal dwarf army lacking centaurs and a Rhordia army needing some knights. I didn't mention it since I'm over flowing with Halflings and expected they would be the obvious choice.. But here we are with you finding my hidden shames and giving excellent ways to expand them. 2025 will see the evil little shits hitting the field against those knights for sure.Love the gifts and the extra mile you went with the card. You even got me some delicious rainbow rods to suck on. In a totally not homo way. Merry Christmas hope Santa can fix what those elves did to your foreskin, can be tough ravaging maidens when it looks like a stepped on Yorkshire pudding.

Can somebody photoshop to be that glass of wine to b a painted miniature?I think it would be a funny meme. It encapsulates, what it is like, to be a /wip/ anon.
My room has dog-awful natural light and my lamp sucks too. I swear I would paint twice as much if I had proper lighting, which is why I thought about getting a powerful head lamp. Any of you guys use something like that? Or maybe an adapter of sorts, where I can plug my smartphone and use the flashlight options there.
>>94610066four million hours in mspaint
>>94610139>Any of you guys use something like that?yes, I am not sure if it's a good idea, but I only used it once for mini painting
>>94610147damn, I was too slow
>>94610139just get an actual desk lamp its not like you wont use it for things other than painting during your daily lifeespecially if your lightning sucks
>>94603429apparently he's a child who can't make any decisions without the input of his imaginary internet "friends"
>>94610139>2 ikea lamps>daylight white bulbsBulb technology today is so far beyond what it used to be, getting reasonably good lighting doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Personally, I've also got a few aluminum clamp lights (from the hardware store, like $5 each) pointed at the ceiling to create a shitload of diffused light. You might also have some luck just poking around thrift stores for random lamps.
>>94610139I got the Redgrass lamp not long ago after an anon here confirmed its good. Boy, it really is fantastic I'll tell you that. Don't know if you feel like shelling out so much though
>>94610147>>94610139Love you guys!
Stripped two minis and realised they're recasts.
>>94610390and i just varnished in -24 celsius
>>94610390But if you did not even realize when they are painted, it is not so bad? (unless you paid a lot of money maybe)I once bought a AT-ST from Lego but it wad not original Lego, but a copy, but since it looks and feels the same I was like "Oh well, whstever)
>>94610390>realised they're recasts. If I'm responsible for that, I'm sure you and I discussed it before hand.
>>94610479They were (poorly) primed rather than painted but it became obvious when I stripped them. Blurry details, some defects, etc. Not sure how noticeable it would be but I don't like knowing they're not originals.
>>94610390If you could not tell before, you wont be able to tell after you repainted them. Whats the problem?
>>94610572>it became obvious when I stripped them. Blurry details, some defects, etc.Ok, this DOES suck.If they were explicitly sold as original, but are fake, I am certain you could get your money back, but depending on the time/money that would cost it might not even be worth it.
>>94610632Probably not. I've been buying metal minis here and there and I'm now in the process of stripping and painting them but I don't even recall where I got them from. I probably didn't pay much but it annoys me knowing I run the risk when I buy second hand. I tell myself I get nine good deals for each dud on average.
So I havent finished with the mage on the left yet, but im not sure of the colors. clean up, final coat, and shading, but im not sure about the colors.I do want him to look like he is a part of the group, so have green be a prominent color, but not sure about the purple. Thought it would give a mystic bent, and I do like how the purple pops against the green and yellow, but im wondering if its too contrasty? Thoughts? do you think another color like red might work better, or do you think the purple will look good once mellowed out by another coat and wash?
>>94609105Ebay or lgs that sells used minis.
>>94610632Recasts on the left versus one original on the right for reference.
Almost done for today
>>94610719It's only like noon, anon. You can still paint for at least another 12 hours.
>>94610713you can barely tell the difference 20cm away let alone 50cm away on a table
>>94610719You should add nicks and bullet marks on the brick wall.
>>94603262Just be aware that those back spikes snap off like they were born to break. >>94604827My dude, base coat them with a colour gradient.
>>94610743not that anon, but is it not a matter of principle?1) you thought it was original and it is not - you got cheated2) assuming it is original, you paid more than you would have, if you knew it was fake - you got scammed
>>94609133>They do this stuff in US?Absolutely! The first hit is free, right?Even the little one-man stores will give you your choice of a Space Marine or Stormcast Eternal, and, if the manager/sole employee has time to spare, a free painting lesson to go with it. The aim is, as >>94609170 says, is to see if they can get you coming back, get hooked, and get invested.Additionally, GW sends a big box of the "mini of the month" to all of its stores. They are a limited stock, so about two weeks into the month, they will probably run out. Usually, it's some line trooper of a faction, but not always; this month is a Skaven model, but I got a Deathwing Knight once month!
>>94607060You missed their cores is why the contrast looks off. Light them up before you adjust.
>>94607420lol nm. See I was right though.
>>94610754well if anon himself could not tell the difference when they were painted im sure they will serve their purpose just fine
>>94610176Yours has better scale though.
>>94610754>but is it not a matter of principle? It might be, if you care about it and approach it from a certain type of collectors point of view. If all you want is a particular sculpt to paint and/or play with it and the recast is not THAT horrible. Why would it matter?for example, i wanted the good looking (original) termi chaplain on my shelf. Its a recast because i did not find the real one in metal (the recast is metal) for a decent price. So for me, its a non-issue in this case. If i had bought it on ebay, thinking and hoping for an original (and maybe even paying a lot for it) only to find out i was scammed, then it would be a different story.
Thinking about a color scheme for some Inquisition troopers in armor. Requisitioned from a tunnel rat regiment, equipped for hive city fighting. So far narrowed down to>standard red cloth, black armor>vallejo royal blue cloth, tan armor>mustard yellow cloth, green-black armorI have the paints for the first two already and would have to order the third. I don't love the first one, in part because it's what everyone who does Inquisition does. I like the second one and have wanted to do that combo for a while, but maybe these are not the models to do it with. The third one I *really* like in theory, and think would work best, but I don't have the paints physically in hand to test how they'd work out, and the brand (AK) is a pain in the ass to get here (at minimum $30 for 2 paints, accounting for shipping).Thoughts? Other schemes I may not have considered? I have some time before I get around to painting these guys, other deadlines coming up first, just planning ahead.
>>94611063I don't remember how much I paid. Probably not a huge amount because for generic rank and file I grab good deals as I find them on eBay or reseller sites. It's more a collector thing. I could resculpt the ugly parts or hide them with the paintjob or basing elements but it would still annoy me knowing it's a fake.
Wait so army painter paints are now the same price as citadel? What's the point then?
>>94610748I'm surprised I didn't break any while building them. There's still time I guess. They do have a primed gradient, but it just really didn't come across in that picture. I mostly paint over it anyway though.
>>94611303Wait, what?
>>94611303popularity of speedpaints went to their head and they stepped out of line
>>94611303NTA but army painter don't come in shitadel paintpots, usually have mixers and have bigger colour ranges and actual triads.
>>94611336>army painter don't come in shitadel paintpotsi visited LGS last week for some paints and i noticed army painter now sells empty drop bottles
>>94611352I know they don't fill their pots up that much, but come on, they aren't EMPTY.But seriously, amazon also sells them for like a dollar for a billion, why would you buy army painter branded ones?
>>94603026I hope I'll have the metals done by the end of the week.
>>94603885My first paintjob with my gfs paints! (With the exception of the yellow mask)Truth be told, I felt like I have no idea what I'm doing, haha, having all those new paints suddenly. I used a wash on the gun and it looks cool, but I am not too happy with the rest, I am a beginner, but still. Also, damn I should not have cheaped out on brushes, they lose their tip left and right, half of them sre gone already.Any tips or recommendations, if you consider the paints I have? >>94603885
>>94611430might have to thin them a bit more, but it's not really that you did a "bad" job, but more like you're not done. instead of relying on speedpaints doing all your highlights and volumes. you now have to do all that yourself. don't throw out your old speedpaints, they can make for good washes to do some of the shadowing. for highlighting it's up to you, can try painting some volumes or just go with standard edge highlights, or nothing at all since I would argue shadowing is enough sometimes
>>94611401Cool. Looking forward to seeing him finished.
>>94611401That's some very fine metal work.
>>94608288shaped like a friend
>>94608447Sand and pva glue in my pill bottles to get them bottom heavy, and it really does help with the shaky hands. Also super convenient that when I pin I can just poke a hole in the cap and secure it from the bottom, I can leave the pin long in case I'm not sure how thick the base will be.
>>94611430nobody knows what they are doing when first starting out so dont worry about thatkeep the theme simple and concentrate on learning brush control like doing a coloring book with thin layersin time you will learn how to "cheat" with washes but first you have to stick to basics

Okay, aside from yellow markings and occasionally puddle of rust, what else would you add to these bases? >>94612147>Was it Citadel licensing a third party to do Warhammer stuff like they did for Marauder Miniatures? It's more hostile than Marauder was. Big Bob Watts decided he was sick of getting screwed by GW, left, hired several ex-GW sculptors GW had also dumped or screwed over, and they made their own company. Which happened (among other things) to make stuff that looked exactly like the ones they had previously been making for GW. Kev Adams did a bunch more goblins, dwarfs, and demons; Tim Prow did Elves and "ratmen", Elliot and Lewis did Chaos, Undead, and knights. They had slightly more primitive molding facilities so some of the early miniatures are pretty awkward, but they hit their stride pretty quick and kept doing the Oldhammer style for almost a decade after GW gave up on it.https://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Heartbreaker_Fantasy_Sculptors

so what is the purpose of this thingi have been holding my miniatures just fine by their base for ages
I fucking hate priming - one from vallejo dries immediately on the tip so I have to clean the airbrush every 5 minutesNo idea if this is caused by primer age. thickness or my dry roomOn the positive side I figured out how kitbashing ork stuff works and how to rivet my stuff - hopefully my second chimera turns out better
>>94613060Holding the miniatures rubs paint off of the sharper exposed edges.Higher quality painting handles also generally have a movable arm for you to rest your hand against to give you more options for stability at more angles.
>>94613063What kind of vallejo primer? Don't use their default primer it's weird garbage. Their mecha primer is fine though.
>>94613079Basic grey one - the bottle is almost spent, so I'm looking to get another oneSadly my choices are slim - the only available brands here are basic primers from Scale75, AK and Vallejo. Everything else must be imported which is kind of a pain in the ass
>>94613060It goes up your ass and rubs your prostate while you paint
>>94613063>I fucking hate primingmost complaining on this here board has to do with primingthere is the, too warm, too cold, too dry, too damp, too windy, too stale, washed, did not wash, wrong brand, right brand, too cheap, too expensive, seen that, and done that -questionssorry to tell you but this usually means you are using it wrong
>>94613071>>94613115remember this one
>>94613060>>94613115Forgot the image
>>94613153Painting handles are reddit now, too?
>>94613060I bought this when I started out and I still use it. I think it's great for holding minis and the grip is good for long sessions. Like >>94613071 said though, it does rub paint off the edges of some bases.
>>94613147Inventing a problem to sell a solution.
>94613166Is reddit in the room with us right now?
>>94613060I've started to develop tremors in my hands when using my index/middle and thumb and I have an appointment with a neurologist about itThis has actually let me keep painting
>>94613265Good chair with height and arm rests that you can adjust helps a lot. Being able to brace your elbows on the arm rests, leaning forearms on the table, wrists together helps a lot.
>wanted to paint today>multiple things come up at least dinner is going to be tasty and we will have leftovers for a couple days, tomorrow is another day.
>>94613336so you didnt even bother to make an excuse why you did not paint anything today
>>94613336>day 683 of *things coming up* and not having enough time to paint>surely I'll get to it tomorrow.
>>94608437Piece of leftover insulation foam and double sided tape.
>>94613351>>94613353oh shit you're right i need to self-flagellate and have a big cry over not getting to painting my little plastic guys today
Is it better to do glue the props to the base before priming or prime base first and glue on the props?
>>94613371Crabs in a bucket.
>>94613380You can't glue things to primer.
>>94613371Exactly. I'm glad you understand.
>>94612435Merry Christmas, hope you enjoy. The 'card' notes are on the other side of the sticker just in case. No Krieg, but with the new lineup you can probably grab some when they're out>>94612681It was the one on the other side of Fort Worth. Hour drive, so we don't actually get out to one much - we got a lot of candy ourselves, and the brisket sandwich, which I enjoyed.
I had motivation to paint for about 2 days, and now I must hibernate for the next 4 months to recharge my painting batteries.
i showed you mine, now show me yours
>>94613115No it doesn't, sauce, gave it a try
>>94613428Brother it is the holidays. We have the time now. Paint.
>>94613459Somebody turn on a lightalso find my other pair of tweezersalso clean up this mess.
>>94613459Why do you have a prison shank?
>>94613521How else do you stop people from drinking your paint, leaving you none to imbibe for yourself?
>>94613060I just use a cork with a metal plate glued on top, since i magnetize my minis as prep and for transportation it comes in very handy.
>>94613521I will never understand why ppl do that insead of getting a xacto knife
>>94613568It looks like he DOES have an xacto knife? I'm confusedIs it a scalpel? Do blades fall off those easily? I never saw the appeal of actual scalpels over xacto knifes. It's not like the blades aren't cheap and replaceable for those too.
>>94613501What do you use the fork for? I'm genuinely asking.
>>94613628There are 2
>>94613521>>94613568back in the day long long ago people used to do all sorts of weird things like strip their models with brake fluid or hand sanitizer etc. or use cheap pharmacy scalpels instead of brand name stripping tools
>>94613640I still use detol to strip my plastic models, it's cheap and it's fine
First pass with an airbrush
>>94613650very cool frog, anon. Pls keep us posted.
>>94613628I eat with them and then throw them in the pile of stuff.
>>94613640People round here used to use oven cleaner to strip models. Idk why though, isopropyl alcohol is the best option and people just pretend like using a bunch of weird brand shit is better.
>>94613568>I will never understand why ppl do that insead of getting a xacto knifeBlades and handles are cheap as fuck, easily-accessed, and if you're in the industry you can get them even cheaper. Actual modeling knives can cost like 6-10x as much as a scalpel in some countries, or not even be imported, but scalpels are a thing almost everywhere. But he's probably just a cheap bastard.>>94613578It's presumably to use it as a moldline scraper. That way you can grip the blade and do some precision maneuvering without taking your finger off.>>94613640>>94613712Isopropyl, acetone, and potassium hydroxide with detergents (AKA LA's Totally Awesome) all have their uses for different materials. Iso fucks up some resins, acetone absolutely destroys everything that isn't metal. LA's is a quarter the price of iso, not flammable, and works about as well. It also doesn't destroy mystery meat models if you do a lot of ebay rescues.
>>94612222Very nice I like what you did.
When using acrylic paints, is brush soap useful for synthetics or is meant only for natural hair?
oh ho, a shipment from spain. what do we have here?

>>94614094what a very kind gift. The ork is very cheeky, I love it. I don't play sigmar but they look like cool models and the purity seal is super cool. terrain is always needed around here and the washes will go a long way. the candy looks delicious as
>>94614112the candy looks delicious as well. Many happy returns to you and yours my distant friend
>>94603031Sandgate anon your package has arrived safely.
>>94614166Wax sealed letter and everything
Is the best option for skulls for basing the GW pack? I don't have a 3D printer and I want to up my basing from just using AK basing material by using more bits/stones, etc.
>>94614173Sweet! That's a big pile of marines and special weapons!I think your building supplies will finally let me fill out my city table. And the fudge is already eaten! Thanks muchly Santa
>>94614190that's a dope ass gift. that old terrain is so useful
>>94614182GSW has good human ones.
>>94614198Yeah it's crazy, its roughly 20 wall panels including doors and broken walls so I should be able to get 1 big or 2 smaller 6x6 ruins out of it to fill out what I already have.
>>94614323fortunately I still have a lot of reserve if I need some
>>94614403I casted a ton of those panels many moons ago
>>94614423dunno what you are doing but it sure looks grandbest of luck and hopefully you will post some of it here

colourful ahh nigga…the staff is the hard part i think…
I'm doing some PVA+sand basing. What's a good drybrush colour over AK's AFV Earth Brown colour after using Earth Brown for the primary bases colour?LGS sells the whole AK range of acrylic paints.
>>94614585im pretty sure everyone has their own mixmake your own and write it down so it stays consistent
>>94614658Now that you mention it, it is a good idea to write down the basing recipe. Not sure why such a thought didn't occur to me.For drybrushing the base to make the texture more visible should one pick a highlight colour (like an edge highlight colour) or a contrasting colour?
>>94614683> to make the texture more visiblewell when this is what you are working with the texture is least of your problemsi base my faba models with mournfang brown and 40k models with abaddon black
>>94614734>well when this is what you are working with the texture is least of your problemsThat's true.My problem is that while I found the right shade of brown for my dirt bases I am yet to find a colour that works nicely as a drybrush highlight over the brown painted sand. That's what cheap MDF bases are for but I am open to suggestions as possibly a way to save time from testing.
Wash in progress, middle still unwashed
>>94614759for black you cant go wrong with dawnstone and admistratum greyfor brown just mix the base with 50/50 ushabti bone and highlight with pure ushabti bonejust my 2 cents hopefully it helps
>>94614788>brown just mix the base with 50/50 ushabti bone and highlight with pure ushabti boneAlright I'll try mixing the brown paint with AK pale sand and then highlight with pure pale sand. I'll see how that goes.Thank you.
>>94614771honestly i cant see much difference between them right now
>>94614734Nice pile, where'd you get it?
>>94614886normal playground sand put trough a colander on a really windy day to get rid of all the fine materialpick out all the largest stones for basing and add about 1/10 of the coarse ones into the mix for varietysand basing is apparently making a comeback of sorts after that store bought basing goo
>>94614859I wouldn't be able to either. In person it's slightly turning the red slightly colder, pulling it away from being too close to orange, which is good enough for meThis is as far as I'm going tonight, the incompatible primer problem really came down on me as the base layer started falling off in places like thighs or the weapons. I'll probably take a toothbrush and some soapy wayer to the models that got hit real bad and redo them with rustoleum primer.
>>94614994the basecoat looks just fine dont strip themwhat you need is a clear plan and solid scheme to go by not different hues of red
New thread:>>94615017>>94615017>>94615017
>>94615026Not stripping all of them just ones that started peeling like right hereBlood angels are already 90% different hues of red, was probably going to blackline a bit and then get to painting the crests and metal parts after
>>94612562kek
>>94614020Probably not as useful, in terms of conditioning the bristles, but it still does the job of getting paint out of the bristles just fine.
