Just getting around to posting this. You really outdid yourself. Really funny Christmas card, too. A real keeper. Thanks so much.

remember when drybrushing was an actual thing you were supposed to learn before moving onto more advanced techniques
>>
>>94615151
Yeah. Unfortunately it's been co-opted by artis opus to try and fit a square peg in a round hole.
>>
>>94615167
Didn't citadel tried to push drybrushing as a valid highlighting technique before artis opus channel became a thing
>>
>>94615196
Yeah, as a beginner technique. Base, wash/shade, drybrush. they never pretended that was how they did 'eavy metal.

To be fair the results the AO guy gets are a cut above what you typically associate with drybrushing

Fuck. That reminds me I wanted to go to the asian grocer and see if I can get some of that curry mix.

I still want to find out what's actually in it.

I have an old metal scalpel handle with a retaning screw that I got for a couple bucks while I was overseas, and blades run literal pennies a piece. I prefer (and use) my exacto now, but a good all-metal one still costs $10-15 on the shelf here and I've seen them sitting at the equivalent of $20 or more in Central America and SE Asia when a scalpel is a few dollars. And incomes are tiny.
>>
>>94615709
Generally I'd agree but it's not really occluded like a bolter in front of a chest, it's layers of details that you can actually see. It's not that big a deal as long as I'm rough with the base coats, it's still a pain though to get decent coverage on both sides, there are like 4 layers of branches.

Finally someone smart enough to realise all I wanted was some space marines for my blood ravens army and some sweets. I've had 3-4 dates with women coming over to see my miniatures on an exhibition/competition. Had a long relationship with one of them and was going to propose to her right about now, but she left me. My girlfriend genuinely likes artsy stuff, including painting miniatures, but she hates violence and everything associated with it, including science fiction toy soldiers. So she rather dislikes my Warhammer collection, because it's a bunch of mean looking guys holding guns, but she loves the astronaut cat 3D print I made and painted for her.
It is what it is, as long as she quietly tolerates a mans hobby and lets him do his thing, it's all good in my opinion.

Casting experimenting? If so, do you use some kind of vacuum chamber to get rid of bubbles in both mold and material or you deal with that other way?
>>

>Casting experimenting?
Not really, they're just rough casts that are going to get covered in slop and turned into terrain one day.
>do you use some kind of vacuum chamber
Nah, it's just plaster and paint into 1 part thermoplastic moulds and a bit of scrim tape poked in afterwards.
No vacuum pot, I don't even bother shaking 'them down to settle the plaster, just mix, pour, go and fuggedaboudit.
I'll probably break a few of the worst looking ones on purpose, so a bubble or a missing nose here or there isn't an issue for me. Got another dozen or two of the little ones to do before I'm happy.

No, he's right, if your loved one loves some form of media that you don't then you will frequently be exposed to that form of media, and you will tolerate it because you love your loved one. That doesn't mean you're a bad match, having different interests can make you better for each other, even though you'll both have to tolerate things you don't like you'll also get to benefit from having someone with a different perspective who is so close to your heart.

Question for the spess marine fags.
I'm in the process of making a big batch of purity seals from epoxy putty, that I'm going to have to super glue on at some point.
Is it worth me gluing them on before priming and potentially flicking them back off when I get the drybrush out (I am going to be drybrushing about 80% of whole paint scheme, doing Grey Knigs), or should I paint them up separately and stick them on later and just trust in the CA? (The easier sounding option if you ask me, but the most likely to fall off)
Does it really make any difference, in your experience?

>>
>>94617544
Anything glued to the primer or paint will only have a bond as strong as the primer/paint to the layer under it. You'll either need to glue the seals on first and prime them together or gently scrape down to bare plastic to glue the seals on later. As long as the purity seals aren't flowing in the breeze like hair in a shampoo commercial they should be able to stand up to some drybrushing.

I'm down to the last crumbs of an ancient pack of milliput that I've been meaning to get rid of, so we're doing things the old fashioned way and sculpting them one by one.
They're for a pair of dreadnoughts, so I've got a ways to go before they're sufficiently tarted up to my liking.

Have any anons here experimented with using real cloth on your models? I have an idea of getting a wedding napkin company to make me custom linen napkins (essentially that fake silky linen material) with inquisition logos on it and cutting it to make capes and drapery for my knight. I have been painting it in a black color scheme to show that the knight pilot's house has been REDACTED and it looks visually boring and I think that deep rich gold and red robes would really accent the black color extremely well and keep it from looking to much like a Black Legion knight.

>>94617704
oh okay I missed that. Good general rule of thumb is to thin the paint 1:1, you might have to adjust that for different paints though. I usually go between 20-30 psi but you should always test on a piece of paper if it's coming out smooth and adjust as needed. Oh and clean your nozzle properly if it got clogged before.

Gonna have to be really fine fibred stuff or the threads are going to be horrendously out of scale. Paper, metal foil, etc is what's traditionally been the materials of choice here. Or just roll out a real thin sheet of green stuff.

OK ty anon, it took a while to clean that white out when it was getting clogged. I'm going to be mostly using the AK rust set so I'm hoping it's not as bad. I'll have to up the psi as I was just using 20 for everything. Do you mix in flow improver with thinner?
>>
>>94617794
Yes, 1 drop of flow improver per 10 drops of thinner. I pulled that ratio out of my ass though so do check if that works for you. Most important thing is to test the paint before going onto the model, after you have the thinning ratio and pressure down it's smooth sailing from there

Oil paints. Palette is a piece of cardboard with a piece of parchment paper glued down with a few dots of elmers glue. Its sitting in an old army painter wet palette case, when I'm done for the day I put a piece of aluminum foil over the top and put the lid over that, then the rubber band around to whole case to hold it together. Whole palette goes into the freezer, takes about 15 - 20 minutes to thaw the paint back out and it'll last for 1 - 1.5 months that way. Its nice that I can mix colors up and keep them usable for several sessions. Once a part dries I can either mix new paint on top of it or gently scrape it off the parchment paper with an old gift card, when the project is done the whole piece of paper gets folded and tossed.

Yarp, here's the last kommando I finished, all dry now. The blends on the eye lenses and blue shirt are pretty muddy, tried to go back and forth too many times and blended too much. Still learning how to paint with the oils but I'm enjoying the process. I've got a fucked up back and hip, when I get a muscle spasm only thing I can do is lay on the floor and stretch until it loosens up. Being able to stop painting, lay on the floor for 20 - 30 minutes, then get right back to painting and blending is one of the main perks of oils for me.

why do people buy 30 tubes/bottles/pots of slightly different shades of the same color instead of just mixing especially if you're already using single pigment artist paints
>>
>>94618088
Mixing decreases saturation, if you want good looking colors there's unfortunately no way around dropping a grand on a wall full of paints
>>
>>94618088
Depends on what you're painting. Sometimes I want a lot of blending and mixing, sometimes I want a more consistent "clean" color. When I was first learning I didn't have that many opaque colors which ended up making a lot of my highlights just color + titanium white which washed out the final look. I'm sure a master artist can get away with just the zorn palette and make minis look amazing but I am by no means a master artist lol.

>>
>>94618221
Fair enough, I usually have to pay 4-5 euros a pot even for the cheaper brands so I tend to be a lot more selective with what paints I buy
>>
>>94618171
I did a shipyard period when I served so this was the shit I saw basically every day. I would assume you could get cheap heroic scale barrels/boxes online almost everywhere as scatter terrain. Then just paint them solid dark colors and add rust. Pallets should be easy to do with popsicle sticks cut and shaped to size and let you play with elevation. Are the models guardsmen? You could post them taking cover behind all the random industrial stuff.

If you have a 3D printer or a printer friend you could easily scale and print pressurized canister racks.

I mean, I recognize the story, I was aware of main plot ideas but I sadly lack the time to read story books, I read about them instead. Does not mean I can't or don't know the important works (I often buy and gift books for my mother since she enjoys reading but takes any pessimistic ideas badly, hence my utter care for finding optimistic stuff instead. I once gave her "Canticle for Leibowitz" and she felt really depressed about ending, which I myself considered optimistic instead), its just that my work and required reading (science aritcles, textbooks, etc) exhaust my capabilities in this field. But recently spotted Baxter "Raft" at antique shop so I grabbed it and finished in one day. Probably because I found whole idea of high gravity universe interesting, being sciencist and all. >What is the point of models being cast in metal other than making them a huge pain in the ass to work with?
Low startup costs, proven technology, high durability, the material's non-toxic and infinitely recyclable, and you can get and keep much finer detail without compromising the sculpt. Resin setups have huge curing and labor times. Not to mention the wastage percentages even with a vacuum pot. Metal is very cheap to spin up a run or a new sculpt and requires less-skilled labor at pretty much every step of the process except sculpting/parting. Molds are easy to make and cheap to replace once you have masters on hand.
The skyrocketing price of tin and improved fidelity of resin printers is finally challenging it, but for a long time metal was the only way to mass-produce models without laying out hundreds of thousands of dollars for injection machines and plates. Compared to a couple thou for a spincaster and the rubber plates? Even now the reason Siocast is so popular is that it largely behaves like metal and uses the same machines.
Also there are two big companies in the US (IWM and Reaper) plus a couple dozen in Europe and the UK that do contract production runs in metal. You can shoot your masters over there and have them cut molds, print blisters, spin up your models and ship them back for a shockingly low price compared to dealing with it yourself.
>>
>>94622268
>Got any specifics?
Nah you don't need to worry about that stuff. Paint is paint, eyeball the colour you want. Needing specific colours is a trap. Slap some brown in your palette and mix til you get what you want.
>>
>>94622281
Fair enough.

I need to get back into paint mixing but I have a kind of autism where I can just sit at the hobbydesk mixing colours and then the time goes by real fast.

>>
>>94622297
Yeah it's fun. I feel like it helps you break a wall as well. Once you start working out what colours you want and how they are formed, really helps when you're picking colour schemes. Also helps your wallet so you don't need to be 10 different shades of the same colour.
>>
>>94622280
>without laying out hundreds of thousands of dollars for injection machines and plates.

>>
>>94622417

I came up with picrel which I think is pretty cool but its not viscerally gripping me.
What do you guys think?
I want the little tilt shield to have a different coat of arms for every squad.

Darker brown highlighted with a lighter brown. You can drybrush if there's wood grain.
>>
>>94623388
I did a base of mournfang and a highlight of steel legion and it looked really flat and bad
>>
>>94623463
nta but
dryad bark - gorthor brown - baneblade brown for neutral dark wood, TTC has a neutral brown triad which looks A LOT better imo
mournfang brown - skrag brown - deathclaw brown for a warmer, orange-y wood
rhinox hide - doombull brown - tuskgor fur for a reddish wood
eavy metal recipe for sylvaneth was steel legion drab shaded with dryad bark - baneblade brown - ushabti bone

I have lots of desert-brown + "sci fi" grey bricks, as well as vehicles, mostly Lego Star Wars and Halo Mega Bloks. I'm playing a Firefly / The Mandalorian feeling solo campaign of Five Parsecs From Home right now, space western, and want to mix it up a bit. I got "proper" tabletop terrain from Battle Systems, but I think I can upgrade it with my existing lego (clone) pieces a lot. Funny thing: lego and Warhammer minis are the same size, so vehicles and stuff fit pretty well.
I'll post a picture later, looking forward to my maps looking more diverse and busy.

this is what I do
put all the browns you have in front of you
base with the darkest or second darkest one
drybrush with a midtone one at random
add some variation on some of the grain by hand with any ligther tone, repeat with another light tone too
slap as many browns in there until it looks good

repeat with any combination until you find one that you like

promptly forget wich combination you did so next day you start over

To be fair, some of the space wolves were painted quite well, and i intend to keep them.
But the rest was in a rather sorry state, some of them already stripped and only hues of former pink EC armor visible.

Pic related, i think you can see what i mean.
I am sure my Santa will forgive me that i use his gift to start a new little army.

Yes they are there, but i am not stripping them.
Firstly because i cant and dont want to use the Space Wolf specific marines for a UM successor chapter, and secondly because they look nice.

I think that actually has dark wood speedpaint on top of vmc flat earth as a base, and a dark brown ink mix pinwash on the separations of each plank and the contours at the very end, but that is completely optional and the speedpaint is so dark that is probably undistinguisable from a solid dark brown base color

for the very top highlight on the corners I went with a touch of good old bleached bone, I can remember that much

I put so many stuff on my leathers and woods that half of the steps don't make any diference at the end, but that's mostly because I never write down the recipe and keep putting stuff on it until it looks right

Next steps on the road bases. Primed in dark neutral grey, indigo oil wash, light drybrush of pale yellow. The saturated indigo and desaturated pale yellow cancel each other out leaving a bluish grey. Most of it will be blended out a little bit, then some lighter white highlights on the edges. Also need to add some "oil stains", paint the dirt and mud, and add some road striping on a few of them. A couple will also eventually have tufts, but only 2 or 3, I really don't like having the same "ornamentation" on all of the bases.

>>
>>94616819
It depends on the paint and pigment you're using, as well as the size of the needle/nozzle on your airbrush. I usually airbrush acrylics around 20 PSI, but offwhites probably contain a lot of Titanium, which is a pretty thick chunky pigment. That's going to be the case for most pastel and brighter paints, so you need to thin them out more or they're gonna chunk up. AK paints usually airbrush well. If you're thinning it with just water and you're committed to using that paint, try getting some airbrush medium to thin with like Golden High Flow Medium.

Setting them aside for now to dry and set. Should have put down strips of titanium white before I put down the yellow on top if I wanted the yellow to be more vibrant, but I think as it mattes out it'll look alright. Some spots of magenta and purple in the oil slicks to add a little variation to them, once I put the models on I'll go back and deepen the shadows under the mini and do final highlights.

Painted up a bunch of Star Wars minis for my brother's D6 game, as a Christmas present (he's had a hard time finding stormtroopers in the right scale/for a decent price so I went and bought some prints of Etsy for him....may have gone overboard...)
Sorry there's no in-progress pic, but I did these all in a marathon session to be done in time for Christmas. Not the greatest work, but I think it hits table-quality. Also realized about halfway thru the troopers that a neutral base would probably be better, but oh well.
