I want to visit japan for the first time but apparently they hate tourists now? How likely is it that I will get bullied and mistreated for being a foreigner?
>>
>>2724804
>apparently they hate tourists now
Why do people talk about countries like hive minds?
Some people in Japan always will and always have hate for tourists.
Chances are you won't interact with many of them because you're gonna be going to tourist businesses
Even then people aren't gonna be rude to your face most times. They'll tell you to have a good day and not mean it before they tell you to fuck off and do mean it.
>>
>>2724804
Worst thing that could happen to you is getting the gaijin seat in an izakaya or restaurant
They give you a seat where you can't be seen away from the customers
It happened to me so I just pointed at the bar chair and said 外国人いすですか
Some drunk guy laughed hysterically and invited me to sit next to him
>>
>>2724804
Practically zero. As long as you're not loud and obnoxious, you should be fine.

Also don't be an idiot who stand in the middle of the sidewalk or station and get in the way of everyone. I get that sometimes you'll get lost, overwhelmed, or want to take in the sites when traveling, but step to the side first before dealing with those things.
>>
>>2724804
Why are there so many doomposts lately?
99% of people don't care positive or negative, just have fun and ignore the jerks just like at home
>>
>>2724801
I've asked this already but for some reason people have been butthurt and not given real answers.

What's the best legal and easy way to get a good sleep aid in Japan? I want to do my domestic travel while sleeping so I'm planning on using ferries and trains. I'm a light sleeper so I'd want something to help me sleep on the moving vehicles though.

Nyquil would work but it's not allowed over there so I want anons' opinions on stuff like "get this specific kind of tea it helped me sleep"
>>

>>
>>2724825

>>
>>2724825
I don't know what kind of answer are you expecting. Go to a fucking pharmacy and ask.
Or if you insist so much in sleeping during travel book first class and get some noise canceling headphones, a blind and a pillow and fucking sleep.
>>
>>2724804
It depends where you go, big cities like Tokyo they dont give a shit about you. You wont have any problems unless you act like a loud annoying westerner. You'll just encounter the usual racism like the Foreigner menu's where you pay more than the locals or places that wont serve you. But thats more because they cant speak english and they cant be bothered to learn so its easier not to have you there. Out in the countryside though, you'll get suspicion and fear, and many place will just want you out as soon as possible.
>>
>>2724804
People talk as if you're going to be pelted with stones and spat on everywhere you go now, and that in the past everyone in Japan used to walk up to you and shake your hand and treat you like a king.
Unless you're an actual bumbling retard or an active nuisance who is planning to go over and cause trouble, what do you think?
Don't get blitzed drunk and grab women or piss on shrines and you'll be fine.
Yeah, a bunch of locals are going to silently seethe and say "I hate tourists" to themselves when they see you. So what? Are you really not going to go? This has ALWAYS been the case, and the only thing that's changed is now there is a tiny bit more of that sentiment.
You should be more concerned about the fact that it's more expensive now, not if Sukuzi-san likes you or not.

not a nip but i live in a tourist town and i would say what people generally resent much more than tourists are people who show up and try to buy their way into being a local. pretty much everyone over the age of like 15 understands that a dead resort is a much worse place to live than a thriving one in spite of having more retard exposure during certain times of year.
if you are self aware enough to ask the question you are already far and above the worst type of tourist

After calculating the Shinkansen prices for my trip it seems I'm breaking even with the Rail pass and regional passes won't cut it. So I decided to just visit a lot more places to make it worth the pass price. Are there some towns north of Tokyo worth visiting?

Also what are some ferries worth taking covered by the rail pass? Might as well visit some comfy island or something.

if you can understand that it's really all you need. the first language japanese people speak is GOOD MANNERS and the words are just filler. if you are polite you will have no trouble anywhere in the country. if you are N1 and have bad manners you'll have an awful time.

Going to Japan for 3 weeks, is my itinerary too much travelling?
>land in Fukuoka, spend the night there then leave the next day
>train to Hiroshima for max 2 days
>Kobe/Osaka for a couple of nights
>Tokyo for 5 or so days
>train to yamagata, want to see ginzan onsen
>plane from sendai to Sapporo
>fly back to Fukuoka for remaining time to catch flight back
Seems very doable with bullet trains desu, do you think it's too much travelling? I'm content with not seeing everything in each place, but I want to see a lot while I'm there. Going end of November into December.
>>
>>2725060
Maybe by the second half of the trip you will be bored and tired.
But what is your focus of interest? What are your hobbies?
You should build your itinerary around your interests.
>>
>>2725061
I've made a more detailed list of things I want to do in each place so I don't get bored. Very generic but just typical tourist things, eat the food, explore temples, I love hiking so probably some walks. My GF loves disney so 2 days in Tokyo will be dedicated to that. I'm quite happy just roaming around the streets with some cheap food and beer with a bit of sightseeing. I originally planned to tour all of Japan OK bicycle but COVID ruined that for me.

I want to live in Japan for a year or two with my girlfriend. Fukuoka would be nice but don't really care where.
Money is not a problem, how can I buy residency?
>>
>>2725062
As for food, you will enjoy Fukuoka. As with any port city, seafood becomes more delicious in winter.
There isn't much snow in December in Japan. It's just cold, so I recommend including other hot springs in your itinerary in addition to Ginzan Onsen. If possible, relax in the hot springs for a few days. I recommend adding hot springs in the second half of your itinerary and using them for rest.

If you like alcohol, you can also include a beer factory in your itinerary.
The Sapporo Beer Factory in Sapporo has a restaurant and beer garden.
https://www.sapporo-bier-garten.jp/

The restaurant at the whiskey factory is also recommended.
https://www.nikka.com/distilleries/yoichi/guide/restaurant/

You can make a reservation for a factory tour with tasting at Kirin Beer Yokohama Factory.
https://www.kirin.co.jp/experience/factory/yokohama/

One last thing. My friend says, "If you go to Hokkaido, go to conveyor belt sushi." The conveyor belt sushi chain "Toriton" that is only in Hokkaido is famous.

I can't find a general for people living in Japan so fuck it I'll ask here.
I've always dreamed of moving to Japan, but there's one thing I can't ignore anymore: the summers. I'm a snow dweller so anything over ~22°C feels pretty uncomfortable for me (and no, I'm not fat). Are the summers there really that bad that they could be a dealbreaker for me? And it seems like it's unavoidable no matter where you move, I hear that even Hokkaido is pretty shit in September.

I grew up in the southern US so personally I always felt like Japanese summers was a meme. It's not that hot IMO but if you're not used to the high humidity you'll have some trouble. This weather also lasts for a long time, it won't start getting colder until around late October/early November.

Hey, bud. Here's what's going to happen:
You're going to go to Japan. You're going to look at the schoolgirls. Some of them might look at you, but most of them are already used to seeing gaijin, so they won't be surprised, and they certainly won't be curious. They're not going to talk to you, and you're not going to talk to them. You're going to realize they're just like the girls back home; they're not interested in you because you're not special, not even in Japan. They already have gaijin friends on Instagram, and they're younger and better looking than you. And if you do try and talk to them, they'll automatically sense you're a creep.
Have a nice trip.

the temperature in most of Japan is generally above 22 degrees from March to November, so it's not just "summers". summers are in the high 30s with scorching sun and so much humidity you sweat literal gallons every day.
even Hokkaido this year was in the 30s in the summer

Anon, you have a fundamental disconnect between how much housing has actually been built, versus how much the population has grown. LA county has added about 7500 homes/year over the past 3 decades, despite population growing by closer to 100k each of those decades. Even though the graph looks better 1960-90, the population was growing 300k-500k per decade, IE outpacing housing supply. So yes, while it looks to you like there's a lot going up, it's drop in the bucket and not building enough is the biggest reason you have a massive homeless problem. Compare to Tokyo, where despite having a growing population and 4x the population of LA, housing is far far cheaper. In fact, in Tokyo the housing component of CPI hasn't changed since the 1990s. It's also far newer housing stock, whereas most of the US west coast is 1100sqft tract homes from the 1950s. If it cost $1 million dollars to buy a shitty 80 year old house in LA, it's no fucking wonder there's a homeless problem. Picrel, your "lot of housing".

I thoroughly enjoy cooking and one of the things I'm looking to purchase in Japan is a good chef knife. I'm fine spending upwards of $500 on it, but obviously don't need to. I know you can get good quality knives for hundreds less.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to get a good knife?

I'm aware of Kappabashi Street, but wondering if anyone has specific store locations? Or perhaps there's a better shop elsewhere where they can make a knife from scratch folding nipponese steel 100,000 times?
>>
>>2725779

>>
>>2725776
I prefer finding some nice drinking buddies who you meet up at night and discuss what you’ve been doing than trying to do the whole nampa thing.
It was only three nights or so anyways until I left for Nagoya.
If you want to consider it into those terms, I guess it was almost NTR since the Finnish guy didn’t dance so his gf danced with me the whole night at club mogra.

you see lots of jeets at konbinis because it's an easy way to get an investment visa. if you have roughly half a million USD to invest you buy a 7 franchise and you can live in the country. then because the population is declining there aren't enough workers, so your nieces and nephews who just so happen to be conveniently attending ikebukuro technical community college for english literature studies and have a part time work permit just happen to be the only ones who pass the strenuous interviews.

I didn't, it just didn't occur to me that I could wait until a trip to get them. I didn't look up any since I figured I wouldn't buy them there
>>
>>2725808
Why a Japanese one?
To generalize, there are two main styles of chef knives. German/French style are what most people are familiar with, built for rocking when cutting.
Then there are the "eastern" Japanese-style chef knives which work on push cutting and often have a flatter edge as opposed to a rocker.
It's different than just buying "thing Japan :O". A Japanese chef knife is literally one of the two major styles of chef knives.

Japan also has a history of blade-smithing. And while that doesn't mean they will make a good chef knife, I'm sure there is a guy whose family has made knives for 200 years that I can buy that would be a cool gift for myself.

Did that answer your question or did you mean something else?
>>
So with the discussion of the jeets in 7/11s, I have a question.
I was looking at Twitter earlier and saw a photo of a girl in the bathroom of a 7/11 wearing the relevant uniform, and have seen several other selfies like this of girls in the konbini jacket or shirt. I'm assuming these are all teenagers or university students in smaller cities and towns, given that imports always flock towards major cities? Or do they exist on the fringes of Tokyo and Osaka too? I'm having trouble recalling what it was like on my past trips because the Indian problem never really occured to me until I started lurking here more frequently.
>>
>>2725815
>Japan also has a history of blade-smithing

>blade smithing, japan :O

ngl, I'm unsure what you're trying to get at. You sound fucking insufferable, lmfao. I told you my main reason for getting a knife, which had little to do with the blade-smithing aspect, and you chose to ignore it.

No, I like to practice being extroverted when abroad, because I feel like consequences don't matter when I'm not in my home country. I don't care if I'm judged, I don't care if people don't like me, I don't care if I look or sound stupid, I'll be gone in 2 weeks. It doesn't mean I will act like a nuisance, like some streamer who acts like a fool on purpose, I do try to be respectful, I just feel more free to do things I normally wouldn't if I were at home. For example,I would never start a conversation with a retail worker at home, but in Japan, I would do it always, especially if it's at a niche store. I had many positive interactions with Japanese people and made some great friends who I still talk to today. Could I do this in my home country? Yes, but I guess I'm still too anxious about that. And I don't really care to overcome it.

The amount of disgusting, fat, smelly, loud, ill-mannered and retarded people I've seen in these two weeks that were either amerilards, europoors or Australians has been shocking. It's so much worse than last year. It's the first time I've been embarrassed to be white and as soon as I spot a group of fellow whitoids I quickly get the fuck away to avoid the incoming secondhand embarrassment. The chinks and Koreans are honestly not even that bad other than the lack of spatial awareness issue.

the worst experience i had with other foreigners was in Kobe. I took the little bus from the port tower and it was kinda full so the lady told me to sit in the back with these two fat ass loud ass niggardly Danish or germans. Like not just just talking on the bus, but LOUD. I think it was a boomer father and adult son, ight have also been in between them and the grandfather who was at least quiet. Then they started trying to imitate american english, i dont think it was because of me, i didnt speak, but it was actually kinda funny, but still obnoxious.

I’m only in Tokyo the first two days then me and a buddy are meeting up in Osaka where we will be for 4 days and then finish up in Tokyo another 4. I need a little bit of help navigating the train lines.

I'm travelling from Shinjuku to Shimoda, and then from Shimoda to Osaka.
>Shinjuku to Osaka I've decided to take the saphir odoriko train, but the way back is where I need help

Looks like I can take the local train network to get from Shimoda to Ito, the Izu Kyuko line.
Does this mean I can use my PASMO card that I use for the subway system in Tokyo to hop on? And I don't need a reservation or anything? Just hop on this train to head to Ito?
>Then from Ito to Atami I'm thinking of taking another local train the Ueno-Tokyo line
Does this also mean I can just use my PASMO card without needing a reservation and hop on like I would a regular subway?

Once in Atami I'll be taking the bullet train out to Osaka, and I'm just buying a single ticket since the JrPass is now outrageously priced.

Thanks in advance!

Incoming truth nuke: learning Japanese can be fun and a nice way to challenge yourself or keep yourself mentally stimulated, but the unfortunate reality is you don't really need it to live in Japan and when you do learn it to an acceptable degree you'll quickly realize that Japanese people often don't have anything interesting to say.
>>
>>2726224
nobody has anything interesting to say, japs are normal people like everybody else

at least to us.
I scored a date in Osaka with a japanese girl and a chinese girl and holy shit the latter is much more full of life.
>>
>>2726224
Japanese don't automatically become interesting just for being "People, Japan". And then there's their conformity culture.
>>
>>2726224

I hit a point really with learning Japanese. I learned Hiragana and Katakana off by heart, then started learning Kanji. But I realised I don't know what any of the words I'm translating even fucking mean. Then I started learning how to speak but unless you're hearing it everyday and around the language, it's fairly worthless to practice beyond knowing core phrases.

this is a pretty common problem learning any language. the learning curve for every language looks like pic related. as an intermediate you have to study twice as hard as a beginner for half the gain. you have to do more than memorize trivia now, you have to understand nuances, cultural context, you have to learn literary devices of the language, you have to learn slang ... it's so so so much harder and there is no text book for this stuff.

ultimately if you don't have roots in the society of the language you're trying to learn and you don't have a couple of hours a day to dedicate to sperging out on hardcore language learning you're probably going to plateau where you're at. it's sad but it's the truth. our brains just don't learn languages very well once we're adults. it's still possible but like i said you have to seriously sperg out on learning the language. for a lot of people who just want to have some extra convenience while traveling that's not always worth it.

Why the fuck do people talk about Japan like a hivemind anyways? They're people. Some of them are assholes, some of them are cool. Some times there's no asshole and there are just cultural differences that make you incompatible.

Neither you nor they are obligated to perform for each other up to some weird standard. Just be polite and apologize if you do something idiosyncratically offensive.

Ah, thank you. I guess similar for the Ito line then, too (to go from Ito to Atami) will be fine with PASMO.

Places where weebs and otaku go are no-go zones. Places where they'll both go are plagues.
>>
>>2726295
>they'll both
These are separate groups? I thought they were just synonyms?
>>
>>2726298
Otaku = Japanese
Weeb = Foreigner

It's not a Venn Diagram as much as it is that there are Otaku who like stuff that Weebs don't really know or care about, but everything Weebs like are things Otaku also like.

Example: There are train otaku. There are not any train weebs. Train nerds from outside Japan don't necessarily fixate on Japanese trains the same way Weebs fixate on Anime.

who cares. do if it you want to. That said I recommend going to akiba cycle base and renting a bike instead. It will probably cost more but you can ride where you want and there are plenty of places to within biking distance that's fun.
You can ride on the side walk, plenty of small streets with low traffic and you can get away with locking the bike up next to shops you are entering.

I was planning on doing, on a day in the next few weeks
- Get to Kamakura early, travelling from Ikebukuro
- Few hours walking and sightseeing in Kamakura
- memerail over to Enoshima by around 12-1pm or so
- Afternoon at Enoshima

Am I being realistic? I think I am, I already kinda planned it out, it will be a long day but I'm already sure that I can't really be fucked going out the same direction twice
>>
>>2726810
No, because like I said I thought she was a tout or a prostitute. But I was surprised by the fact it was uncharacteristic for their kind, in an empty street on a quiet night, dressed in ordinary clothes, speaking like a normal person rather than yelling out to me. We walked past each other and she was looking at me from the front, then turned me around afterwards.

Different story but I have become so used to rejecting touts and such on the street it led to me having another awkward encounter. A guy standing outside a club just chilling said something to me as I walked past, and I instinctively looked away and made it clear I ignored him. A second later I realised he was just a random dude who didn't work there and he wanted to say he recognized the tv show my t shirt referenced.

Here is my recommended route for sightseeing in Kamakura.
Get off at JR Kita-Kamakura Station (35.3373,139.5451) and visit Engakuji Temple (35.3376,139.5473).
Then walk down the hill to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (35.3256,139.5561). The stone steps here are famous as the place where the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate was assassinated. There is also a museum (35.3246,139.5569) attached to the shrine.
Take the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden) from Kamakura Station (35.3189,139.5504) and get off at Hase Station (35.3112,139.5359). Visit the Great Buddha (35.3168,139.5357). You can also buy souvenirs at Sankaido (35.3154,139.5353). Hasedera Temple (35.3124,139.5332) is also worth visiting.
Take the Enoden from Hase Station to Enoshima Station. On the way back from Enoshima, take the monorail from another Enoshima Station (35.3088,139.4834).

I'm an anime fan, so I got off at Gokurakuji Station (35.3093, 139.5287) and visited Kamakura High School (35.3066, 139.5021), and enjoyed it for a whole day.
>>
>>2726819
Thanks, I'll save your comment in my notes incase I change my mind, but my plan was to use the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass - Odakyu Railway which will get me a roundtrip from Shinjuku as well as unlimited enoden for cheap. I wont go to Kita-Kamakura JR Station and the temples next to it. I was planning something closer to https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3121_kamakura_full.html

I probably get targeted a lot because I look quite young and friendly in a naive way, neither of which are really true. I don't dress well either. Anyway when I first came to Japan, I got stopped by an African dude only one time and that was when I was standing in a corner looking at Google maps like an idiot. She handed my a flyer and spoke very good english too.
The flyer looked like a pretty legitimate massage service but at hour of the night I was pretty skeptical.
What do you think of that?
>>
Which do you think is more useless for a night out, Shinjuku if you don't want alcohol or Dotonbori if you are not hungry? Like damn add any other type of establishment to these places and I swear it would become the most profitable by being the only of its kind.
>>
>>2727113
why is shinjuku bad if you don't want to drink? there's plenty of food and no one makes you drink there.
>>
>>2727112
I've never listened to touts at all or taken them up on anything but I think the services they advertise are real, like you would actually get a massage for example, but you would probably pay a shitload of money for it or it would just be a low quality service meant to get you in, take your money and get you out quickly.
It's the ones advertising clubs that are actually dangerous because they will genuinely take all your money and if you resist they will get some dudes to beat you up.
>>
>>2727115
I will accept Shinjuku does have quite a lot of restaurants but it's still mostly the place where people drink and not much else. Dotonbori however is literally all nothing but restaurants, even if some of them are quite good, the place immediately loses all appeal after eating.
>>
>>2727117

the one time i did follow a tout was some guy advertising bbq and our group was hungry.

It's a mixed bag. Some will definitely take you to a "real" place which is either some bar, some bj place, or drugs if you're into that, but you could also end up in a scam place or worse, drugged, and not the other kind I mentioned. Not really worth it when you can just look up the thing you want on the internet and go to a place that's actually legit.
>>
>>2727112
About 5 years ago when I was leaving Akiba late at night, a man in plainclothes on a street corner with no flyers or any kind of ID mumbled something at me, then clarified "massage" and motioned a shoulder rub with his hands. I think it would be an ウンダ situation

Shops that use touts are 100% rip-offs. The touts are not from the shop, but work on a freelance basis, and when you go to a shop with a tout, the shop adds the margin they pay to your price. The "best" shops do not need to use touts to get customers in the first place.

Kek this would probably benefit the streets massively. The touts are just a nuisance for foreigners but I have to admit I feel pretty bad for the Japanese girls sometimes walking around at night, they get it pretty rough. Like for foreigners the touts will leave you alone after 4 seconds of ignoring them but the host club touts really don't stop harassing local girls, blocking their path, following them around. Earlier tonight I saw a lone girl get surrounded by a group of three touts and she had to push her way past them. I know Harajuku implemented some sort of anti tout measures, I wonder if they are working.

>>
>>2727373
Not really. Japanese folks have quite accurate expectations of foreigners' ability to communicate and fit in, that is to say, very low. But Japanese people are also always the kind to avoid conflict and prevent escalating situations. If you do something bad in public, nobody will bully you or confront you. Also, if you are in a city, nobody will ever stare at you or even notice you exist. Everyone has their own life going on and they keep to themselves. Even in social scenarios like a night out on the town, Japanese people will never approach foreigners for anything. It's always other foreigners who will interact with foreign tourists. Its like two separate worlds existing in the same space, yet never overlapping. The only way to break through to the other side is for you, the tourist, to speak in Japanese and engage with the locals. Even if it's only a few sentences, they will be very glad to not have to speak English (it's not that they can't do it, but they don't want to because they are not confident)

I booked a trip to central Europe for Feb but I kind of want to cancel and go back to Hokkaido instead. I fucking love Hokkaido in the winter. The snow is so beautiful. It never snows where I live. I went there last year but I don't care I want to go again.
>>

My friends and i are loosely planning a japan trip for next year. How is hokkaido in december? I'm sorta worried about the temperature and personally i dont know how i fare in snow (never experienced it beyond when i was 5 years old and cant remember it)
Also Nikko and Sendai for that matter, as we'll probably be travelling north from tokyo.
>>
>>2727457
I'm from Australia so I'm not used to the cold at all and I was fine. I was worried about clothing as well but as long as you have a down jacket you shouldn't need anything else. I didn't need thermals or anything like that. Just tshirt, light sweater and a down jacket. I didn't need any special footwear either I just got some water resistant hiking shoes. I bought snow boots and didn't wear them once. You can always buy stuff at uniqlo if you find you need more.
The only time I had trouble was in Otaru because the footpaths were really icy and I kept slipping. Even when I was in Takayama and the snow was coming down sideways my down jacket was fine.
>>
>>2727457
You can buy rubber things for about ¥1000/pair that slip over your shoes and have cleats attached. I forget what they're called. Uniqlo heattech is a good option to have and I would strongly recommend getting at least one set, both top at bottom. Good wool socks from a brand like Icebreaker or Macpac or whatever you can get locally will carry you if nothing else.

Hiking boots are excessive, but if you're planning on going offroad in any capacity I would recommend getting at least some Salomon trail shoes or something and spraying them with watercoat spray before you leave. I purchased mine for about $100 NZD locally and while they're not suitable for hardcore hiking, they're good enough to get through light to medium snow and grit. If all else fails you can find a 2nd street and get something for cheap and just leave it behind when you leave.

Ice is more dangerous than snow in terms of actual hazards you will encounter in the city and is better solved with a large sole surface than cleats or anything of the sort.

don't wait, as soon as you can basically read hiragana start doing kanji
learn the radicals and practice writing them
you can use an app like kanji study
at some point (300 kanji/radicals or so) your retention drops
when it does, reduce time spent on kanji, start doing vocab in anki (go as fast as possible, aim for 5 seconds/card), and start reading and listening as much as you can tolerate

Depends on the release, some games have no english translation aka Dragon Quest X you can hack your switch and do the english translation patch.

I'm finding out on Wednesday, but I'm going to Europe not Japan. Depends heavily on the airline you fly though, some have shitty seats. Double check that you're booking actual premium economy and not just economy with more legroom. There is a difference, and I often see the extra legroom seats as just 20-30% more than economy while actual premium economy costs 70-100% more than regular economy.

I already put the alpine route in my itinerary to see some mountains since it’s all like buses and trains and ropeways. Now I’m just trying to find a way to see some coastline and islands and stuff. I think Shimanami Kaido looks cool but I read it’s a cycling route which is a big no no for me but I think they have a bus alternative you can take that might be good. Also I read about Matsushima Bay which is supposed to be one of the three views of Japan and they have sightseeing cruises to see it but it’s a bit far north from the rest of the places I’ll be.

I'm embarrassed to ask this but, how much of a hard time will the locals in major cities (Osaka and Tokyo) give a Japanese American that knows nearly zero Japanese? I plan to try and learn the basics in conversation before my December trip, but I know that the time I can give it everyday won't be enough to get to a grade schooler's level of understanding.
>>
>>2727965
the bus for shimanami kaido is not worth it. Rent an electric bike and start the day early. Plenty of stops along the way to take breaks and get drinks. You'll have to reserve your bike ahead of time.
The town of onomichi is quite pleasant on its own too and you can walk to the various temples there.

Don't bother. If you speak even a little Japanese, the locals will assume you are competent enough to hold a normal conversation.

If you use the public Shimanami JAPAN, you can freely return the bike at any of the Shimanami JAPAN points.
In the case of private bicycle rental companies, there are various conditions such as few points or you have to return the bike to the place where you rented it.

I found osaka's grid layout to be quite convenient, making walks easy. And the daytrips possible are better.
Can't comment on the food, i dont think i had anything that could be called "osaka food", just went to a chain gyudon place, and my hotel's restaurant is all i remember.
But what about general things to see and do? I think tokyo has osaka beat there.
>>
>>2728052
Osaka is worse for sight seeing but a little better for just chilling I think. When I was in Osaka I did this for sight seeing:
>Castle and surrounding park
>Basedfacing at the signs in Dotonbori (Only takes like 10 minutes of walking and sit in one restaurant and you have completed this place)
>Tennoji ward temples
>Southern Tennoji parks and zoo
>Shinsekai/Tsutenkaku (make sure you do this one at night)
So nothing really compared to what Tokyo has, but Osaka does tend to have better shopping and slightly better food, and it's just much easier to navigate.

If you're just a tourist and doing some sight seeing there is no point in learning any Japanese. Learning the language is for people who want to "break through" the barrier between things that tourists do and things that actual Japanese people do. E.g. go to a bar and meet strangers, go on a date, play a sport/video game/card game with people, learn local history and hear stories. It's all stuff that a tourist doesn't need, but someone who loves Japan can feel like they are missing out if all they do is just take pictures of the neon signs or the temples.

I'm going to Japan with my gf in a couple weeks and I'm nervous we won't have things to do in the evenings.
We aren't big drinkers so we don't plan on going to bars every night and getting drunk. I'm worried that we'll be doing sightseeing during the day, but then have nothing to do after dinner. With the worst case scenario being rotting in our hotel room during the evenings because we don't party. I'm just being dramatic now and giving myself anxiety for no reason, but what are some good recs for non-alcohol-based nightlife experiences in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto that people really enjoyed?

I'm not a party/alcohol person at all either and I managed to find a couple of things to do at night that I enjoyed. Most nights basically went like this from 22:00 and onwards
>Go to the arcades and play some games. Usually you can run into strangers who also want to play something with you
>Go to a restaurant, ones that stay open at night are usually very chill
>Go to a music venue, tons of clubs have bands of various genres perform every night, even if it's a bar I would just order 1-2 drinks only while enjoying the performances.
>If you are in an area like Shinjuku you can also hit up the batting cages
By the time a combination of those things were done it was like 1am and I could say I did something that night.

Itinerary examples for 日本:
>bro do that shrine and then this one
>bro and also check out this little shrine here
>bro remember to CHECK OUT DAT SHRINE on your way to the shrine

Am I the only one bewildered by this? Sure there are some beautiful temples and some are definitely worth checking out but every guide recommends a gazillion of them for each neighbourhood. I would never think about recommending to check out chuches here in Yurop even though they are centuries old. Sure if you come to germany and have some time to kill I would say check out cologne cathedral because it is the most impressive church in the country but other than that? Hello, I need advice from anyone who has been to Japan before.

I am cripple and have someone planning a trip to Japan for me (mostly arranging things like transport and accessible hotels and other logistics). This is the estimated price they have given so far for 2 people and a 2 week stay.
Is this a reasonable price? It includes the cost of the flight, nice hotels, private transport (not taxis, I'll have a chauffeur), as well as various miscellaneous costs to make things easier for me, but does not include any expenses like food costs or admission fees to places and so on.

The money doesn't bother me, I can afford it but is this reasonable or are they trying to rip me off?

i would say 30k no way, but it depends what you need for being crippled..
economy flights direct with a good airline should be like £1000-1500 max return each, but if you need business class then it could easily be something like £10k each
i mostly stay in basic business hotels (just means a basic and small room) which are way cheaper than in the uk, but if i was to guess even a nice 4* hotel with a good sized room wouldn't be more than £100-200/night in japan
the cost of transport is expensive especially taxis, so chauffeur is probably ridiculous cost
food and entrance fees are generally much cheaper than the uk, like half the price kind of level

I only have one leg and half a pelvis. I will be travelling business class because there is no way I can sit cramped in economy for 14 hours. I'll need to lay down at some point. I'm guessing this alone will be half of the cost if not more.
The hotels they've recommended are all 4 star hotels and honestly I'm not entirely sure about them. The hotels are Hotel Groove in Shinjuku, The Thousand in Kyoto and Caption by Hyatt in Osaka. I had a quick look but they seem to be like £200ish a night each. They have decent locations so travel time wont be bad, but this Hotel Groove and Caption hotel look like they're made for hipsters or something.

Maybe it's accurate but provided all they've done is cover travel and accommodation it still seems insane.

>look like they're made for hipsters or something.
if it's the decor or whatever then it shouldn't matter too much, the main issue will be room sizes because they're all typically tiny in japan. the standards for everything else are really high and consistent.
you are definitely just getting screwed on flight prices then
>>
>>2728429
Your flight and private chauffeur probably make most of the price, leaving 2000 or 3000£ for the hotels. Can't you ask for a detailed invoice?
>>
>>2728438

Small rooms don't bother me, infact I'd prefer them since it means less distance to travel (you got no idea how much of a pain it is to wake up at night needing a piss when the toilet is so far away and you only have one leg).

>>2728442

I can probably ask for a detailed breakdown of prices. This is just a rough estimate for now. I've already rejected a bunch of their recommendations because I don't want to watch sumo wrestling or learn to play a drum so once things are finalized I'll probably get an itemized invoice. Just seems a lot more expensive than I'd initially figured it would be.

Fucking business class STILL makes me feel poor. Gotta be making 300k+ a year or some shit to be buying those seats.

90% of the people in business class are flying on the company's dime or are just normal people who saved up enough airline miles or credit card points or whatever to splurge on a nicer trip.
>>
>>2728451
Depends on the airline really. I flew on British Airways recently and their premium economy/business class seat is identical to the economy seat but it has a couple more inches of legroom and there are some more plugs/USB ports on the arm rest. Meanwhile the first class seats are a full sectioned off recliner seat with small walls surrounding you and loads of room on the sides to serve as big arm rests or tables.

imo it's a reasonable/ not a rip off price given the need for good flight class and chauffer then. you probably wouldn't save much if organising it yourself, maybe a few k but at that price i guess it wont even matter at that point. if there would be anything to save a significant amount on it would be the flight prices, they vary wildly

Since this thread is almost dead, any of you guys have sloppified your travel pics?
>>

I guess it makes sense that travel is what is inflating the cost.

Thanks for the advice, now I just need to figure out what I'm gonna do when I get there.

I'm leaving in two weeks for Japan and I can't even be happy about it. My life is falling apart and I don't know what I'll be doing in december. I wanted to use Hellotalk to find someone to show me around in the cities I'll be visiting but I couldn't even find the time to run the app. Maybe I'll have the time tomorrow or thursday.

let me know how that goes and how you go about it because i downloaded it again last week and havent bothered to touch it yet. Last time i never even messaged anyone because i assumed that anyone who wasnt new had already been ran through by every other loser. For clarification, are you trying to fuck or just make friends because i think you can guess which way im going.
>>
>>2728484
Make friends first and foremost, but I actually wouldn't mind if it ended up in an hotel. I need to pull my head out of my ass first though. I'm also kind of an autist online and behave far better irl. Will update if I find at least someone to talk to.

i went to that exact spot on my first day in march, i think it was a sunday and there were a bunch of indians and their families out and about. It was also the hottest day in march, was wearing almost a suit ,and i hadnt any sleep for something like 40 hours

fuck tinder, unironically worse than in the west, just straight up scams and hookers, not even trying to hide it. Bumble is much better, at least for a foreigner.

Exact opposite, i wouldnt mind ending up making friends. I always go alone and just end up meeting people either here or out and about. But theyre all foreigners, tourists or residents.
>>
>>2728491
Is hinge any better
>>
>>2728496
First time going alone, before I always went with either my sister or a friend. We usually met and talked to far more locals than other foreigners. I'm planning to go to izakayas and bars, I always found some japanese people to talk to before but I did need to translate everything to the one who was with me, so it was kind of laborious. I'll see how it is this time, since I'm alone.
>>
>>2728499
see thats what i thought but apparently hinge isnt available to download in japan. You can set your location there for free, but everyone is either American, chinese or spent enough time in the west to have downloaded it.

I'm the planner for a group of 5 coming up in a couple of weeks. There are many whole apartments that can be booked / rented out for relatively cheap, comparable to booking multiple hotel rooms. Depending on the location, Airbnb can be decent. Location also makes a large difference i.e. staying in Shinjuku vs somewhere quieter like Ueno or Asakusa. If your group doesn't mind, you can also try hostels and sometimes you'll get lucky and have the whole place to yourselves.

Really? Tinder worked better for me than in the US. I might have actually fucked up my ELO by swiping in the US now though
>>
where's the best place to stay in tokyo and osaka?
>>
Tinder is so demoralizing when you realize the girl you're talking to is also talking to 10 other guys.
>>

That’s also irl too fyi

My fiance would have fun doing any of those activities. You sound like you've never had a gf.
>>

Business class seats especially are driving it up, since there's no way that's less than $6k round trip. Long gone are the days of China flooding the market with cheap seats, back in 2017 you could get round trip business class on ANA for $2800, or Asiana or a Chinese airline for sub $2200. It was a wild time.

I'm going to be taking a my first trip to Japan mid December. Don't wanna jump around, plan on staying on Kyushu for the majority of my time there. How's Iki Island, if I wanted to explore it for a few days? Tsushima?

That's why you always move fast. Think of it like a social media video. You skip fast when it starts with "Hi my name is so and so and today"*SKIP*

You gotta keep her interest and ask her out before the energy dies down and then if she says yes you stop messaging her until the date comes
