I want to visit japan for the first time but apparently they hate tourists now? How likely is it that I will get bullied and mistreated for being a foreigner?
>>2724804>apparently they hate tourists nowWhy do people talk about countries like hive minds? Some people in Japan always will and always have hate for tourists.Chances are you won't interact with many of them because you're gonna be going to tourist businessesEven then people aren't gonna be rude to your face most times. They'll tell you to have a good day and not mean it before they tell you to fuck off and do mean it.
>>2724804Worst thing that could happen to you is getting the gaijin seat in an izakaya or restaurant They give you a seat where you can't be seen away from the customersIt happened to me so I just pointed at the bar chair and said 外国人いすですかSome drunk guy laughed hysterically and invited me to sit next to him
>>2724804Practically zero. As long as you're not loud and obnoxious, you should be fine. Also don't be an idiot who stand in the middle of the sidewalk or station and get in the way of everyone. I get that sometimes you'll get lost, overwhelmed, or want to take in the sites when traveling, but step to the side first before dealing with those things.
>>2724804Why are there so many doomposts lately?99% of people don't care positive or negative, just have fun and ignore the jerks just like at home
>>2724801I've asked this already but for some reason people have been butthurt and not given real answers. What's the best legal and easy way to get a good sleep aid in Japan? I want to do my domestic travel while sleeping so I'm planning on using ferries and trains. I'm a light sleeper so I'd want something to help me sleep on the moving vehicles though.Nyquil would work but it's not allowed over there so I want anons' opinions on stuff like "get this specific kind of tea it helped me sleep"
>>2724801>2022Irrelevant the whole country has had 300% more smelly foreigners added the past year and a half
>>2724825Hey retard why don’t you just go to a pharmacy in Japan and ask the nice workers for a sleep aid?
>>2724825just buy domesticallythey have drug stores too
>>2724825don't know
>>2724825Mohammad get out
>>2724810>外国人いすですかIs this the foreigner chair?
>>2724825I don't know what kind of answer are you expecting. Go to a fucking pharmacy and ask.Or if you insist so much in sleeping during travel book first class and get some noise canceling headphones, a blind and a pillow and fucking sleep.
>>2724804It depends where you go, big cities like Tokyo they dont give a shit about you. You wont have any problems unless you act like a loud annoying westerner. You'll just encounter the usual racism like the Foreigner menu's where you pay more than the locals or places that wont serve you. But thats more because they cant speak english and they cant be bothered to learn so its easier not to have you there. Out in the countryside though, you'll get suspicion and fear, and many place will just want you out as soon as possible.
>>2724804People talk as if you're going to be pelted with stones and spat on everywhere you go now, and that in the past everyone in Japan used to walk up to you and shake your hand and treat you like a king.Unless you're an actual bumbling retard or an active nuisance who is planning to go over and cause trouble, what do you think?Don't get blitzed drunk and grab women or piss on shrines and you'll be fine.Yeah, a bunch of locals are going to silently seethe and say "I hate tourists" to themselves when they see you. So what? Are you really not going to go? This has ALWAYS been the case, and the only thing that's changed is now there is a tiny bit more of that sentiment. You should be more concerned about the fact that it's more expensive now, not if Sukuzi-san likes you or not.
how many Viagra tablets can i bring in without the border guards getting suspicious?
First time going to Japan in January; I'm at an N5 (just about ready to do N4), will I be good to have small chats and talk to people for a bit in the countryside? Any anons have any experience with doing this? I'm white btw
I have like four days free near the end of my trip that I haven’t filled up yet Should I just stay in Tokyo and use a bullet train to quickly visit Fuji for example? Is that enough time to walk around, get to know the place and bullet train back to Tokyo?
>>2724801Which sounds like a better focus trip: kyuushu in the fall or Hokkaido in the spring?
>>2724848>Don't get blitzed drunk and grab women or piss on shrines and you'll be finethat was my whole itinerary
>>2724894LOL
>>2724848Instructions unclear, I blitzed women, pissed on drunks, and grabbed shrines
>>2724804not a nip but i live in a tourist town and i would say what people generally resent much more than tourists are people who show up and try to buy their way into being a local. pretty much everyone over the age of like 15 understands that a dead resort is a much worse place to live than a thriving one in spite of having more retard exposure during certain times of year.if you are self aware enough to ask the question you are already far and above the worst type of tourist
>>2724804Do people in your country bully and abuse foreigners when they see them?
>>2724804You're more likely to be bullied by other foreigners.
>>2724964From which countries?
>>2724882I bet you're a French nigger you subhuman.
After calculating the Shinkansen prices for my trip it seems I'm breaking even with the Rail pass and regional passes won't cut it. So I decided to just visit a lot more places to make it worth the pass price. Are there some towns north of Tokyo worth visiting? Also what are some ferries worth taking covered by the rail pass? Might as well visit some comfy island or something.
>>2724883>Is that enough time to walk around, get to know the place and bullet train back to Tokyo?Definetly. The last time I went I had time to hang around near Fuji and go back for dinner in Tokyo. We made sure to take the train early in the morning just to be sure but we had time to spare
god americans are so insufferable. Somehow they're even more annoying than chinese this time around. Why are they so fucking loud all the time
>>2724883>>2724983Taking a day trip to Mt. Fuji while staying in Tokyo is a huge waste of money and time. Are you an Arab royal?
>>2724986I would just "accidentally" spill a drink on them.
>>2724989yeah, only a richest of richest saudi princes can aford a ~5358¥ trip. Thank god i'm part of the 1%
>>2724825you can buy lean over the counter in japan. go in to a pharmacy and fake a cough and they'll give you a bottle of codeine.
>>2724851in my experience if you have less than a 90 days supply of anything they don't even bat an eye. if you have less than 1,000 pills total and have a reasonable explanation for all of them (this is Rx, this is supplement, blah blah blah) then you'll have no trouble. they really only care about the jeets and gerians importing meth and coke.
>>2724872>こんにちは>これはいくらですか>これをください>これをおねがいします>ありがとうございます>すみません>ごめんなさい>日本語はちょっと難しいですね。。。if you can understand that it's really all you need. the first language japanese people speak is GOOD MANNERS and the words are just filler. if you are polite you will have no trouble anywhere in the country. if you are N1 and have bad manners you'll have an awful time.japanese really appreciate foreigners that try their best to speak japanese. especially because most of them are embarrassed to speak english.
>>2724983Is that enough time to see the lakes around Fuji?
>>2724889kyuushu no question. hokkaido is nice in the summer or winter. it's kind of sad and grey in spring and fall.>>2724964this is true.>>2724982i'd go to kanazawa, hiraizumi, and aomori. kanazawa is 2 hours by bullet train from tokyo and has a very unique feel amongst japanese cities. the food is really good there too! >>2724986you have to understand that america is a big country and japan attracts a certain kind of extremely obnoxious american. we in america also find this kind of person to be extremely annoying and loud. please understand.
Stop. Staying. In Tokyo.Do you want to experience Japan or Tokyo? Because you won’t experience Japan by being in Tokyo. It’s like visiting NYC and saying you’ve been to USA.Actually, visit and stay in Tokyo and leave Japan for the rest of us, faggots
>>2725029Why would you encourage foreigners to leave Tokyo asshole
>>2725029I think of Tokyo as a home base to explore the neighboring areasNo one actually stays in Tokyo right?
>>2725029>It’s like visiting NYC and saying you’ve been to USA.Isn't that really common?https://www.trade.gov/us-states-cities-visited-overseas-travelers
>>2725034Because almost all forms of media feature those major states, which is why people abroad want to know these areas that have been romanticized on tv
>>2725029What's wrong with Tokyo? Only poor/forced to work in the boonddocks english teaches complai nabout it tbqh. the night life better than anywhere else and you can get to the attraction elsewhere quite easy.
>>2725033All my friends who've been to Japan went to Tokyo and Tokyo only. I guess because there's so much to do and see there and nothing elsewhere appealed to them.
>>2725038Tokyo isn’t just Tokyo station I’m sure there’s plenty to see around Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures, but like anon said, there’s much to see outside Tokyo >nothing elsewhere appealed to them Skill issue desu
>>2725039Name just 5 worthwhile things outside of Tokyo that you can't see an equivalent of in Tokyo.

>>2725041Because, you have none.
>>2725038Were they coomers and weebs ? Tokyo is one of the worst cities in Japan for attractions and places like shibuya and shinjuku were horrible .
>>2725045Coomers no, weebs yes. I agree, I really hated Shinjuku.
>>2725039A day trip from Tokyo to Nikko, Kusatsu, Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, Izu, etc. is too much of a rush and not cost-effective.If you want to stay in Tokyo, it is better to go to nearby tourist attractions in Tokyo or enjoy the city life in Tokyo.

Going to Japan for 3 weeks, is my itinerary too much travelling?>land in Fukuoka, spend the night there then leave the next day>train to Hiroshima for max 2 days>Kobe/Osaka for a couple of nights>Tokyo for 5 or so days>train to yamagata, want to see ginzan onsen >plane from sendai to Sapporo>fly back to Fukuoka for remaining time to catch flight backSeems very doable with bullet trains desu, do you think it's too much travelling? I'm content with not seeing everything in each place, but I want to see a lot while I'm there. Going end of November into December.
>>2725060Maybe by the second half of the trip you will be bored and tired. But what is your focus of interest? What are your hobbies? You should build your itinerary around your interests.
>>2725061I've made a more detailed list of things I want to do in each place so I don't get bored. Very generic but just typical tourist things, eat the food, explore temples, I love hiking so probably some walks. My GF loves disney so 2 days in Tokyo will be dedicated to that. I'm quite happy just roaming around the streets with some cheap food and beer with a bit of sightseeing. I originally planned to tour all of Japan OK bicycle but COVID ruined that for me.
>going to Japan with friend>friend has already said he'll probably do some solo traveling at times>tempted to go look for stuff related to my fetish but wouldnt know where to start or if i shouldFuck
Is Fujinomiya a good place to chill for 3 days in early November? I know fuji is closed but hotels are cheap is there anything to do nearby? I'm just killing time until a flight
I want to live in Japan for a year or two with my girlfriend. Fukuoka would be nice but don't really care where.Money is not a problem, how can I buy residency?
>>2725062As for food, you will enjoy Fukuoka. As with any port city, seafood becomes more delicious in winter. There isn't much snow in December in Japan. It's just cold, so I recommend including other hot springs in your itinerary in addition to Ginzan Onsen. If possible, relax in the hot springs for a few days. I recommend adding hot springs in the second half of your itinerary and using them for rest.If you like alcohol, you can also include a beer factory in your itinerary. The Sapporo Beer Factory in Sapporo has a restaurant and beer garden.https://www.sapporo-bier-garten.jp/The restaurant at the whiskey factory is also recommended.https://www.nikka.com/distilleries/yoichi/guide/restaurant/You can make a reservation for a factory tour with tasting at Kirin Beer Yokohama Factory.https://www.kirin.co.jp/experience/factory/yokohama/One last thing. My friend says, "If you go to Hokkaido, go to conveyor belt sushi." The conveyor belt sushi chain "Toriton" that is only in Hokkaido is famous.
After doing translations for a week (guiding two friends around on their first trip) I can say I fucking HATE doing interpreter work. Worst part was when one of them decided to buy over 20k yen worth of pornography at a Melonbooks in one go, once again in awe of Japanese customer service since I couldn't keep the disgust out of my face and they could.
>>2725069You're overthinking it. It's just a job.
>>2724801I have 3 days in kyoto first time where should i go
>>2725068>There isn't much snow in December in JapanThat's a shame, I wish I'd done my research. I was hoping for a bit of snow in Hokkaido and maybe in Obanazawa for Ginzan Onsen. I knew about the Sapporo Beer factory but not the one in Yokohama, which is one of our day trips from Tokyo. Thank you for the recommendations anon.
>>2725069They've probably seen it so many times they're just used to it
WHY DONT THEY LEARN ENGLISH?

>>2725005That's great to know, thank you!! I'm extremely polite and often complimented on it irl, so I'm sure I'll be fine there.
>>2725078hokkaido and yamagata get plenty of snow in december, not as much as january-march but enough to cancel trains due to snow storms if you're unluckyenjoy your onsen
>>2725086Their English teachers aren't fluent in English, and being the only English-whizz in the classroom would result in being socially ostracised.
>>2725084It's a cashier at Melonbooks. "Probably seen it so many times" is an understatement of the century. They are literally surrounded by it.
>>2725089i think so too. have fun anon and share your itinerary, maybe we can do some meetups!>>2725065if you buy one of those abandoned homes you can get a visa so long as you invest a certain amount.>>2725060what do you want to do in sapporo? i would skip hokkaido unless you have at least 3 or 4 different destinations you want to visit there. hokkaido weather is also pretty difficult at this time so it's not really worth the hassle of getting hardcore snow gear if you just want to go drinking in sapporo.>>2725048luh calm ahh comment

>>2725064I went there for a day on my trip and it just looked like a random town with not much to do. To be fair I just hanged around around the parks along the river coming from Fuji. I didn't move too far from the station because it didn't seem to have much public transport. Maybe if you go by car or bike you go to more interesting places. Does anyone know how I can get a private dinner experience with a maiko or geisha in kyoto? I know it's expensive but I have the dough.
I can't find a general for people living in Japan so fuck it I'll ask here.I've always dreamed of moving to Japan, but there's one thing I can't ignore anymore: the summers. I'm a snow dweller so anything over ~22°C feels pretty uncomfortable for me (and no, I'm not fat). Are the summers there really that bad that they could be a dealbreaker for me? And it seems like it's unavoidable no matter where you move, I hear that even Hokkaido is pretty shit in September.
>>2725280I grew up in the southern US so personally I always felt like Japanese summers was a meme. It's not that hot IMO but if you're not used to the high humidity you'll have some trouble. This weather also lasts for a long time, it won't start getting colder until around late October/early November.
>>2725283>this weather also lasts for a long timethis is the issue, I can deal with the two weeks of pain chicago gets every july/august, but it being like that for months is a dealbreaker. visited Georgia in april and Florida in November and it was humid hot hell. went to hong kong in summer as well, big mistake
>>2724804Been here for 14 days now and they have treated me exactly the same as in 2018, 2019 and 2023. It's just fear mongering by redditorsThat said I visited Kanazawa and found a peculiarly familiar JR station

I have already been to Japan, and while I would like to visit a different country, I cannot stop thinking about Japan.
If I go with my sister will everyone think she's my girlfriend. I want to be looked upon favorably by the teenage Japanese girls. Thanks so much!
>>2725350Hey, bud. Here's what's going to happen:You're going to go to Japan. You're going to look at the schoolgirls. Some of them might look at you, but most of them are already used to seeing gaijin, so they won't be surprised, and they certainly won't be curious. They're not going to talk to you, and you're not going to talk to them. You're going to realize they're just like the girls back home; they're not interested in you because you're not special, not even in Japan. They already have gaijin friends on Instagram, and they're younger and better looking than you. And if you do try and talk to them, they'll automatically sense you're a creep.Have a nice trip.
>>2725351Hey, bud:I am going to look at the schoolgirls. Did I forget to tell you I'm a model? Yeah, and in fact, I'm very handsome, and the girls in America? They love me! I'm pretty young myself at 27 years old! And besides, those oriental pearls like em a bit older heheh..

>>2725280>anything over ~22°C feels pretty uncomfortable for methe temperature in most of Japan is generally above 22 degrees from March to November, so it's not just "summers". summers are in the high 30s with scorching sun and so much humidity you sweat literal gallons every day.even Hokkaido this year was in the 30s in the summermy recommendation is to kys

>>2725219>>2725257Anon, you have a fundamental disconnect between how much housing has actually been built, versus how much the population has grown. LA county has added about 7500 homes/year over the past 3 decades, despite population growing by closer to 100k each of those decades. Even though the graph looks better 1960-90, the population was growing 300k-500k per decade, IE outpacing housing supply. So yes, while it looks to you like there's a lot going up, it's drop in the bucket and not building enough is the biggest reason you have a massive homeless problem. Compare to Tokyo, where despite having a growing population and 4x the population of LA, housing is far far cheaper. In fact, in Tokyo the housing component of CPI hasn't changed since the 1990s. It's also far newer housing stock, whereas most of the US west coast is 1100sqft tract homes from the 1950s. If it cost $1 million dollars to buy a shitty 80 year old house in LA, it's no fucking wonder there's a homeless problem. Picrel, your "lot of housing".>>2725280>>2725283Also US Southeast anon here. I went in July/August 2018 and thought I was prepared for it, it was worse than Atlanta summers in Kanto, Kansai, Nagano, and Kanazawa. Aomori wasn't bad though, and Miyagi had good and bad days. I know you can get good quality knives for hundreds less.Does anyone have any recommendations for places to get a good knife? I'm aware of Kappabashi Street, but wondering if anyone has specific store locations? Or perhaps there's a better shop elsewhere where they can make a knife from scratch folding nipponese steel 100,000 times?

>>2725780I don't? I have a quality german-style chef knife, and I'd like a quality japanese-style chef knife (like a santoku) too. For some reason, my iphone won’t let me reload a suica card in my apple walletIf I can’t get it to load, what’s the suica situation in Japan? anyone ever stay in ichihara/chiba?
>>2725807I didn't, it just didn't occur to me that I could wait until a trip to get them. I didn't look up any since I figured I wouldn't buy them there
>>2725808Why a Japanese one?To generalize, there are two main styles of chef knives. German/French style are what most people are familiar with, built for rocking when cutting. Then there are the "eastern" Japanese-style chef knives which work on push cutting and often have a flatter edge as opposed to a rocker. It's different than just buying "thing Japan :O". A Japanese chef knife is literally one of the two major styles of chef knives. Japan also has a history of blade-smithing. And while that doesn't mean they will make a good chef knife, I'm sure there is a guy whose family has made knives for 200 years that I can buy that would be a cool gift for myself. Did that answer your question or did you mean something else?
So with the discussion of the jeets in 7/11s, I have a question.I was looking at Twitter earlier and saw a photo of a girl in the bathroom of a 7/11 wearing the relevant uniform, and have seen several other selfies like this of girls in the konbini jacket or shirt. I'm assuming these are all teenagers or university students in smaller cities and towns, given that imports always flock towards major cities? Or do they exist on the fringes of Tokyo and Osaka too? I'm having trouble recalling what it was like on my past trips because the Indian problem never really occured to me until I started lurking here more frequently.
>>2725815>Japan also has a history of blade-smithing>blade smithing>blade smithing, japan :O
>>2725818ngl, I'm unsure what you're trying to get at. You sound fucking insufferable, lmfao. >>2725826No, I like to practice being extroverted when abroad, because I feel like consequences don't matter when I'm not in my home country. I don't care if I'm judged, I don't care if people don't like me, I don't care if I look or sound stupid, I'll be gone in 2 weeks. It doesn't mean I will act like a nuisance, like some streamer who acts like a fool on purpose, I do try to be respectful, I just feel more free to do things I normally wouldn't if I were at home. For example,I would never start a conversation with a retail worker at home, but in Japan, I would do it always, especially if it's at a niche store. I had many positive interactions with Japanese people and made some great friends who I still talk to today. Could I do this in my home country? Yes, but I guess I'm still too anxious about that. And I don't really care to overcome it.

Incoming truth nuke: learning Japanese can be fun and a nice way to challenge yourself or keep yourself mentally stimulated, but the unfortunate reality is you don't really need it to live in Japan and when you do learn it to an acceptable degree you'll quickly realize that Japanese people often don't have anything interesting to say.
>>2726224nobody has anything interesting to say, japs are normal people like everybody elseI learned Jap for the porn like all sane people
>>2726224>Japanese people often don't have anything interesting to sayat least to us.I scored a date in Osaka with a japanese girl and a chinese girl and holy shit the latter is much more full of life.
>>2726224Japanese don't automatically become interesting just for being "People, Japan". And then there's their conformity culture.
>>2726224some are interesting some are not, just like everywhere else. sometimes they seem aloof but if you take the initiative and break the ice and they really start coming out of their shell
>>2726224That's........................... hmm, how should I put this............... well.............. It's difficult. Yes, it's difficult. Yes.
I hit a point really with learning Japanese. I learned Hiragana and Katakana off by heart, then started learning Kanji. But I realised I don't know what any of the words I'm translating even fucking mean. Then I started learning how to speak but unless you're hearing it everyday and around the language, it's fairly worthless to practice beyond knowing core phrases.
>>2726247>I learned the alphabet but I gave up when learning words
>>2726250It's just not sticking in my brain. I can learn a word but I'm never going to use it unless I live in Japan. In my native language (English) I grew up using it every single day
>>2726251>EFLtardjust rope already
>>2726252Why are you so hostile fren? Being EFL is fantastic. Pretty much every country speaks it. I'd rather be an EFL than ESL. Either way, I'm moving to Japan for 6 months soon so I will keep practicing Japanese :)
>>2726247this is a pretty common problem learning any language. the learning curve for every language looks like pic related. as an intermediate you have to study twice as hard as a beginner for half the gain. you have to do more than memorize trivia now, you have to understand nuances, cultural context, you have to learn literary devices of the language, you have to learn slang ... it's so so so much harder and there is no text book for this stuff.ultimately if you don't have roots in the society of the language you're trying to learn and you don't have a couple of hours a day to dedicate to sperging out on hardcore language learning you're probably going to plateau where you're at. it's sad but it's the truth. our brains just don't learn languages very well once we're adults. it's still possible but like i said you have to seriously sperg out on learning the language. for a lot of people who just want to have some extra convenience while traveling that's not always worth it.

>>2726224>>2726230Why the fuck do people talk about Japan like a hivemind anyways? They're people. Some of them are assholes, some of them are cool. Some times there's no asshole and there are just cultural differences that make you incompatible.Neither you nor they are obligated to perform for each other up to some weird standard. Just be polite and apologize if you do something idiosyncratically offensive.

>>2726147Places where weebs and otaku go are no-go zones. Places where they'll both go are plagues.
>>2726295>they'll bothThese are separate groups? I thought they were just synonyms?
>>2726298Otaku = JapaneseWeeb = ForeignerIt's not a Venn Diagram as much as it is that there are Otaku who like stuff that Weebs don't really know or care about, but everything Weebs like are things Otaku also like.Example: There are train otaku. There are not any train weebs. Train nerds from outside Japan don't necessarily fixate on Japanese trains the same way Weebs fixate on Anime.
I feel like I've consumed too much Japan travel media to the point it's eroded my desire to actually go. I've never been there but I'm already bored of shit like the shopping district in Osaka with all the cool signs or all the koi canals in vacation villages.

But I was surprised by the fact it was uncharacteristic for their kind, in an empty street on a quiet night, dressed in ordinary clothes, speaking like a normal person rather than yelling out to me. We walked past each other and she was looking at me from the front, then turned me around afterwards.Different story but I have become so used to rejecting touts and such on the street it led to me having another awkward encounter. A guy standing outside a club just chilling said something to me as I walked past, and I instinctively looked away and made it clear I ignored him. A second later I realised he was just a random dude who didn't work there and he wanted to say he recognized the tv show my t shirt referenced.

The stone steps here are famous as the place where the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate was assassinated. There is also a museum (35.3246,139.5569) attached to the shrine.Take the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden) from Kamakura Station (35.3189,139.5504) and get off at Hase Station (35.3112,139.5359). Visit the Great Buddha (35.3168,139.5357). You can also buy souvenirs at Sankaido (35.3154,139.5353). Hasedera Temple (35.3124,139.5332) is also worth visiting.Take the Enoden from Hase Station to Enoshima Station. On the way back from Enoshima, take the monorail from another Enoshima Station (35.3088,139.4834).I'm an anime fan, so I got off at Gokurakuji Station (35.3093, 139.5287) and visited Kamakura High School (35.3066, 139.5021), and enjoyed it for a whole day.

She handed my a flyer and spoke very good english too.The flyer looked like a pretty legitimate massage service but at hour of the night I was pretty skeptical. What do you think of that?
Which do you think is more useless for a night out, Shinjuku if you don't want alcohol or Dotonbori if you are not hungry? Like damn add any other type of establishment to these places and I swear it would become the most profitable by being the only of its kind.
>>2727113why is shinjuku bad if you don't want to drink? there's plenty of food and no one makes you drink there.
>>2727112I've never listened to touts at all or taken them up on anything but I think the services they advertise are real, like you would actually get a massage for example, but you would probably pay a shitload of money for it or it would just be a low quality service meant to get you in, take your money and get you out quickly. It's the ones advertising clubs that are actually dangerous because they will genuinely take all your money and if you resist they will get some dudes to beat you up.
>>2727115I will accept Shinjuku does have quite a lot of restaurants but it's still mostly the place where people drink and not much else. Dotonbori however is literally all nothing but restaurants, even if some of them are quite good, the place immediately loses all appeal after eating.
>>2727117>low quality servicethe one time i did follow a tout was some guy advertising bbq and our group was hungry.it was kinda lack luster compared to where we've been when we picked on our own and definitely looked emptier than we were use to seeing.
>>2727117>get some dudes to beat you upI wish this would happen to me. I really want to get into a fight in Japan.
>>2727131Make sure it's near a bunch of parked bicycles.
>>2727117It's a mixed bag. Some will definitely take you to a "real" place which is either some bar, some bj place, or drugs if you're into that, but you could also end up in a scam place or worse, drugged, and not the other kind I mentioned. Not really worth it when you can just look up the thing you want on the internet and go to a place that's actually legit.
>>2727112About 5 years ago when I was leaving Akiba late at night, a man in plainclothes on a street corner with no flyers or any kind of ID mumbled something at me, then clarified "massage" and motioned a shoulder rub with his hands. I think it would be an ウンダ situation
>>2727117Best thing to do (if you ever do decide to follow a tout) is to google the place before you go inside.
>>2726896I've been with friends, and I found that the most fun I've had was when I was on my own
>>2726585Yes, very cringe. But as long as it's still around and you really want to do it, I say go for it.
Japan trip done. I'll finish learning Japanese before I go again.
>>2727117Shops that use touts are 100% rip-offs. The touts are not from the shop, but work on a freelance basis, and when you go to a shop with a tout, the shop adds the margin they pay to your price. The "best" shops do not need to use touts to get customers in the first place.
>>2726316>vr headset for $700>plane ticket for $2100Decision pretty easy desu
Looking for a yakiniku recc in Osaka.Preferably with Tabe/nomihoudai.
>>2727150Better yet just never follow them.
>>2727190Should start a beat-up-touts meet-up.
>>2726316I mean honestly with all the stories about how overtouristed the country is people probably shouldn't be going anyways
>>2727207Kek this would probably benefit the streets massively. The touts are just a nuisance for foreigners but I have to admit I feel pretty bad for the Japanese girls sometimes walking around at night, they get it pretty rough. Like for foreigners the touts will leave you alone after 4 seconds of ignoring them but the host club touts really don't stop harassing local girls, blocking their path, following them around. Earlier tonight I saw a lone girl get surrounded by a group of three touts and she had to push her way past them. I know Harajuku implemented some sort of anti tout measures, I wonder if they are working.
>>2727211Nice try, butI WILL go to Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka againI WILL go to Nikko for autumn foliage, and while your tour bus is stuck in traffic, I WILL stay overnight and have already moved on from all the spots before you have even arrivedI WILL go to Hakone and while you're catching the train back to Tokyo, I will be in my onsen for the nightI WILL stay long enough to simply pick out the best days for everything I want to seeI WILL avoid all the domestic tourists on weekendsI WILL wake up at 5am and have a days sightseeing done before your fat arse has rolled out of bedand I WILL enjoy it all
How come everyone goes to hakone? It seems like the ryokan onsens are more inauthentic and geared towards tourists. If you go out into the mountains you can find some that are old and traditional
>>2727042Are they two different shinaknsen lines? Where are you going to/from?
>>2727117>>2726961I will say, if the tout is Japanese there's a chance it won't be a complete scam in my experience. In Kabukicho I followed one down some stairs into into what looked like a bar on the outside but was actually a broth*l filled with chinese women. The price was on the higher end of reasonable but I was able to haggle it down a few thousand yen.
>>2727194お疲れ様ですanon
>>2727196Japan is very dense and locations along main streets are very expensive. So businesses can rent cheaper spaces up elevators and down alleys. Then they can use a tout on the main street to make up for the lost foot traffic.

If you like Hibike Euphonium go to Uji and hike up the observatory at night to sit at the Kimiko-Reina spot and gaze out at the city. If you like One Piece, go to Kumamoto. If you like Uchouten Kazoku go to Shimogamo Jinja. Etc.

Any other recs? Maybe like some eva stuff?
>>2727265When you go to Gundam Base, consider actually buying and building gunpla there. If it's too intimidating then don't bother, but I mean they got the no scale grandpa now, a d that would be a fun one to do there. As for EVA couldn't tell you though. >>2727331>will i be forced to smoke them in a small smoking stall? If you're in Tokyo, the answer is yes. Luckily there are plenty of cigar bars and lounges in Tokyo for you to smoke more comfortably. I particularly like the Davidoff lounge in Ginza.

So I take it the best way to avoid getting bullied or death stared is literally just be polite and not stand out too much? Make an effort to speak a little Japanese, be courteous, not obnoxious, stay quiet if possible? I normally am so quiet I commonly end up jump scaring my parents when I enter a room or walk up behind them
My stop in Fukuoka happens to align with some Sumo tournament. Fucked my plans to stay in a nice hotel there right up. Is sumo worth watching?
>>2727373Not really. Japanese folks have quite accurate expectations of foreigners' ability to communicate and fit in, that is to say, very low. But Japanese people are also always the kind to avoid conflict and prevent escalating situations. If you do something bad in public, nobody will bully you or confront you. Also, if you are in a city, nobody will ever stare at you or even notice you exist. Everyone has their own life going on and they keep to themselves. Even in social scenarios like a night out on the town, Japanese people will never approach foreigners for anything. It's always other foreigners who will interact with foreign tourists. Its like two separate worlds existing in the same space, yet never overlapping. The only way to break through to the other side is for you, the tourist, to speak in Japanese and engage with the locals. Even if it's only a few sentences, they will be very glad to not have to speak English (it's not that they can't do it, but they don't want to because they are not confident)

>>2727436I hope not
I booked a trip to central Europe for Feb but I kind of want to cancel and go back to Hokkaido instead. I fucking love Hokkaido in the winter. The snow is so beautiful. It never snows where I live. I went there last year but I don't care I want to go again.
>>2727453My friends and i are loosely planning a japan trip for next year. How is hokkaido in december? I'm sorta worried about the temperature and personally i dont know how i fare in snow (never experienced it beyond when i was 5 years old and cant remember it)Also Nikko and Sendai for that matter, as we'll probably be travelling north from tokyo.
>>2727457I'm from Australia so I'm not used to the cold at all and I was fine. I was worried about clothing as well but as long as you have a down jacket you shouldn't need anything else. I didn't need thermals or anything like that. Just tshirt, light sweater and a down jacket. I didn't need any special footwear either I just got some water resistant hiking shoes. I bought snow boots and didn't wear them once. You can always buy stuff at uniqlo if you find you need more. The only time I had trouble was in Otaru because the footpaths were really icy and I kept slipping. Even when I was in Takayama and the snow was coming down sideways my down jacket was fine.
>>2727457You can buy rubber things for about ¥1000/pair that slip over your shoes and have cleats attached. I forget what they're called. Uniqlo heattech is a good option to have and I would strongly recommend getting at least one set, both top at bottom. Good wool socks from a brand like Icebreaker or Macpac or whatever you can get locally will carry you if nothing else.Hiking boots are excessive, but if you're planning on going offroad in any capacity I would recommend getting at least some Salomon trail shoes or something and spraying them with watercoat spray before you leave. I purchased mine for about $100 NZD locally and while they're not suitable for hardcore hiking, they're good enough to get through light to medium snow and grit. If all else fails you can find a 2nd street and get something for cheap and just leave it behind when you leave.Ice is more dangerous than snow in terms of actual hazards you will encounter in the city and is better solved with a large sole surface than cleats or anything of the sort.

On the road down from Fushimi Inari mountain, near the end at the multiple Inari shrines, there is a single shop run by a granny that only sells Inari sushi for around 150 yen. It’s the best thing I ever ate. It’s sweet, vinegary and the texture is perfect. I couldn’t find anything like it elsewhere and I think the hunger from hiking in the mountain added to the appeal.
>>2727742Double check that you're booking actual premium economy and not just economy with more legroom. There is a difference, and I often see the extra legroom seats as just 20-30% more than economy while actual premium economy costs 70-100% more than regular economy.

>>2727800It's Delta Comfort+ for 3/4 segments. Last segment is Main Cabin. It's about 90% more than their basic economy. Google Flights calls Comfort+ premium economy, anyway.
>>2727783when location is equalized, they are hardly cheaper than staying in an apa or another decent hotel and the quality can be way worse. I was in one for $50 usd that the washroom was so gross I didn't want to shower in it.
I've been chatting with an old man on HelloTalk for a few months now and he's planning to show my group around Hakone for a day. What are the chances I get murdered? In the worst case, we probably have the numerical advantage, in the best case we have a pleasant time.
>>2727823Hate to tell you, Comfort+ is the extra legroom economy. Same exact seats, just more legroom, but on domestic flights it's marketed as premium economy. Premium Select is Delta's actual premium economy offering for international flights, and those seats are only on their widebody aircraft.

I'm embarrassed to ask this but, how much of a hard time will the locals in major cities (Osaka and Tokyo) give a Japanese American that knows nearly zero Japanese? I plan to try and learn the basics in conversation before my December trip, but I know that the time I can give it everyday won't be enough to get to a grade schooler's level of understanding.
>>2727965the bus for shimanami kaido is not worth it. Rent an electric bike and start the day early. Plenty of stops along the way to take breaks and get drinks. >>2727992>I plan to try and learn the basics in conversationDon't bother. If you speak even a little Japanese, the locals will assume you are competent enough to hold a normal conversation.
If you use the public Shimanami JAPAN, you can freely return the bike at any of the Shimanami JAPAN points. In the case of private bicycle rental companies, there are various conditions such as few points or you have to return the bike to the place where you rented it. However, some of them are cheaper than Shimanami JAPAN and have a wide variety of models, so check out the one that suits you best.

>>2728045I found osaka's grid layout to be quite convenient, making walks easy. And the daytrips possible are better. Can't comment on the food, i dont think i had anything that could be called "osaka food", just went to a chain gyudon place, and my hotel's restaurant is all i remember. But what about general things to see and do? I think tokyo has osaka beat there.
>>2728052Osaka is worse for sight seeing but a little better for just chilling I think. When I was in Osaka I did this for sight seeing:>Castle and surrounding park>Basedfacing at the signs in Dotonbori (Only takes like 10 minutes of walking and sit in one restaurant and you have completed this place)>Tennoji ward temples>Southern Tennoji parks and zoo>Shinsekai/Tsutenkaku (make sure you do this one at night)So nothing really compared to what Tokyo has, but Osaka does tend to have better shopping and slightly better food, and it's just much easier to navigate.

>>2728080it's probably a good thing they don't, to be honest
>>2728080If you're just a tourist and doing some sight seeing there is no point in learning any Japanese. Learning the language is for people who want to "break through" the barrier between things that tourists do and things that actual Japanese people do. E.g. go to a bar and meet strangers, go on a date, play a sport/video game/card game with people, learn local history and hear stories. It's all stuff that a tourist doesn't need, but someone who loves Japan can feel like they are missing out if all they do is just take pictures of the neon signs or the temples.

I'm going to Japan with my gf in a couple weeks and I'm nervous we won't have things to do in the evenings. We aren't big drinkers so we don't plan on going to bars every night and getting drunk. I'm worried that we'll be doing sightseeing during the day, but then have nothing to do after dinner. With the worst case scenario being rotting in our hotel room during the evenings because we don't party. I'm just being dramatic now and giving myself anxiety for no reason, but what are some good recs for non-alcohol-based nightlife experiences in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto that people really enjoyed?

>>2728268>>2728274I should add, that it's not like we're homebodies or don't do anything at night (despite what my original post made it seem like). It's more that we do "planned" activities, like go see a show, an art gallery, something that we bought tickets to or is organized. But we don't frequently do the spontaneous night activities. Kino day in okunikko, weather held out well. Now the whole bus ride back from first to last stop while laughing at the npcs who dont get on at the first stop and so have to stand
Visibility dropped massively as i got to yumoto near the end (had a kino foggy walk around the lakeside forest instead of a view over the lake). Seems like visibility is gone all over. Sucks for all those day trippers and late starters, not my problem
>>2728359I'm glad you had a nice day anon!
>>2728370Danke
>>2727367You should be able to find it in most video game arcades all over the country
>>2728268I'm not a party/alcohol person at all either and I managed to find a couple of things to do at night that I enjoyed. Most nights basically went like this from 22:00 and onwards>Go to the arcades and play some games. Usually you can run into strangers who also want to play something with you>Go to a restaurant, ones that stay open at night are usually very chill>Go to a music venue, tons of clubs have bands of various genres perform every night, even if it's a bar I would just order 1-2 drinks only while enjoying the performances.>If you are in an area like Shinjuku you can also hit up the batting cagesBy the time a combination of those things were done it was like 1am and I could say I did something that night.
>>2728381All of those things sound so boring to do with a gf, ngl. You can just imagine her getting bored of each one in the first 2 minutes.
>>2728386Then go to Shinjuku and get a better gf.
>>2728381Those are pretty good ideas, thank you anon! I do plan on hitting up some of those 24/7 multi-floor arcades with go-karting and batting cages. I think there's a wild one in osaka. I'm down for some music as well. Live jazz bars and bands are sweet.>>2728386Get a better partner? Not sure what to say, man. Your gf should at least pretend to enjoy some of your hobbies and also enjoy non-childlike things, too. Do you think women just like partying, drinking, or "boring" cultural things like museums and art galleries?
>>2728394>Do you think women just like partying, drinking, or "boring" cultural things like museums and art galleries?Ive only ever dated BPD whores, so it's very much the former rather than the later
Anyone have website to see the prices of previous flights? I want to see how much flights in november/december/january cost, but they are all higher due to it being so close to those dates compared to buying 6 months out.And i cant see flight prices for the future as its too far.
>>2728404I bought mine for november in april and the price would be like 160% if I paid for it today. But this is a direct connection without stopover. The prices for flights with stopovers haven't changed much actually if I remember the prices correctly. Just to give you some perspective.
Itinerary examples for 日本:>bro do that shrine and then this one>bro and also check out this little shrine here>bro remember to CHECK OUT DAT SHRINE on your way to the shrineAm I the only one bewildered by this? Sure there are some beautiful temples and some are definitely worth checking out but every guide recommends a gazillion of them for each neighbourhood. I would never think about recommending to check out chuches here in Yurop even though they are centuries old. Sure if you come to germany and have some time to kill I would say check out cologne cathedral because it is the most impressive church in the country but other than that? I wonder if japs share this sentiment and feel weirded out by us speedrunning their culture like it's some indie roguelike game.
>>2728391>>2728394>get a better gfI'm not the guy who asked for recommendations, I'm just saying any gf would get bored of those things. I wouldn't travel with a gf, it's a bad idea (unless you're rich), because if you can travel with her, why not marry her?
>>2728339>i will probably spend more time on that bike than i have on bikes all my lifeI worry more about your cycling skills than your stamina.
>>2728413Talked like some third world pajeet.
Hello, I need advice from anyone who has been to Japan before.I am cripple and have someone planning a trip to Japan for me (mostly arranging things like transport and accessible hotels and other logistics). This is the estimated price they have given so far for 2 people and a 2 week stay.Is this a reasonable price? It includes the cost of the flight, nice hotels, private transport (not taxis, I'll have a chauffeur), as well as various miscellaneous costs to make things easier for me, but does not include any expenses like food costs or admission fees to places and so on.The money doesn't bother me, I can afford it but is this reasonable or are they trying to rip me off?
anyone been to japan with a large group? what did you do for CHEAP accommodation?
>>2728429i would say 30k no way, but it depends what you need for being crippled..economy flights direct with a good airline should be like £1000-1500 max return each, but if you need business class then it could easily be something like £10k eachi mostly stay in basic business hotels (just means a basic and small room) which are way cheaper than in the uk, but if i was to guess even a nice 4* hotel with a good sized room wouldn't be more than £100-200/night in japanthe cost of transport is expensive especially taxis, so chauffeur is probably ridiculous costfood and entrance fees are generally much cheaper than the uk, like half the price kind of level
>>2728432I only have one leg and half a pelvis. I will be travelling business class because there is no way I can sit cramped in economy for 14 hours. I'll need to lay down at some point. I'm guessing this alone will be half of the cost if not more. The hotels they've recommended are all 4 star hotels and honestly I'm not entirely sure about them. The hotels are Hotel Groove in Shinjuku, The Thousand in Kyoto and Caption by Hyatt in Osaka. I had a quick look but they seem to be like £200ish a night each. They have decent locations so travel time wont be bad, but this Hotel Groove and Caption hotel look like they're made for hipsters or something.Maybe it's accurate but provided all they've done is cover travel and accommodation it still seems insane.
>>2728435>look like they're made for hipsters or something.if it's the decor or whatever then it shouldn't matter too much, the main issue will be room sizes because they're all typically tiny in japan. the standards for everything else are really high and consistent.you are definitely just getting screwed on flight prices then
>>2728429Your flight and private chauffeur probably make most of the price, leaving 2000 or 3000£ for the hotels. Can't you ask for a detailed invoice?
>>2728438Small rooms don't bother me, infact I'd prefer them since it means less distance to travel (you got no idea how much of a pain it is to wake up at night needing a piss when the toilet is so far away and you only have one leg).>>2728442I can probably ask for a detailed breakdown of prices. This is just a rough estimate for now. I've already rejected a bunch of their recommendations because I don't want to watch sumo wrestling or learn to play a drum so once things are finalized I'll probably get an itemized invoice. Just seems a lot more expensive than I'd initially figured it would be.
>>2728432Fucking business class STILL makes me feel poor. Gotta be making 300k+ a year or some shit to be buying those seats.
>>2728451Meant to upload this image
>>272845190% of the people in business class are flying on the company's dime or are just normal people who saved up enough airline miles or credit card points or whatever to splurge on a nicer trip.
>>2728451Depends on the airline really. I flew on British Airways recently and their premium economy/business class seat is identical to the economy seat but it has a couple more inches of legroom and there are some more plugs/USB ports on the arm rest. Meanwhile the first class seats are a full sectioned off recliner seat with small walls surrounding you and loads of room on the sides to serve as big arm rests or tables.
>>2728446>Just seems a lot more expensive than I'd initially figured it would be.imo it's a reasonable/ not a rip off price given the need for good flight class and chauffer then. you probably wouldn't save much if organising it yourself, maybe a few k but at that price i guess it wont even matter at that point. if there would be anything to save a significant amount on it would be the flight prices, they vary wildly
Since this thread is almost dead, any of you guys have sloppified your travel pics?
>>2728464I guess it makes sense that travel is what is inflating the cost. Thanks for the advice, now I just need to figure out what I'm gonna do when I get there.
I'm leaving in two weeks for Japan and I can't even be happy about it. My life is falling apart and I don't know what I'll be doing in december. I wanted to use Hellotalk to find someone to show me around in the cities I'll be visiting but I couldn't even find the time to run the app. Maybe I'll have the time tomorrow or thursday.
>>2728483>wanted to use hellotalk to find someone to show me aroundlet me know how that goes and how you go about it because i downloaded it again last week and havent bothered to touch it yet. Last time i never even messaged anyone because i assumed that anyone who wasnt new had already been ran through by every other loser. For clarification, are you trying to fuck or just make friends because i think you can guess which way im going.
>>2728484Make friends first and foremost, but I actually wouldn't mind if it ended up in an hotel. I need to pull my head out of my ass first though. I'm also kind of an autist online and behave far better irl. Will update if I find at least someone to talk to.
>>2727778i went to that exact spot on my first day in march, i think it was a sunday and there were a bunch of indians and their families out and about. It was also the hottest day in march, was wearing almost a suit ,and i hadnt any sleep for something like 40 hours
>>2727473fuck tinder, unironically worse than in the west, just straight up scams and hookers, not even trying to hide it. Bumble is much better, at least for a foreigner.
>>2728486>Make friends first and foremost, but I actually wouldn't mind if it ended up in an hotelExact opposite, i wouldnt mind ending up making friends. I always go alone and just end up meeting people either here or out and about. But theyre all foreigners, tourists or residents.
>>2728491Is hinge any better
>>2728496First time going alone, before I always went with either my sister or a friend. We usually met and talked to far more locals than other foreigners. I'm planning to go to izakayas and bars, I always found some japanese people to talk to before but I did need to translate everything to the one who was with me, so it was kind of laborious. I'll see how it is this time, since I'm alone.
>>2728499see thats what i thought but apparently hinge isnt available to download in japan. You can set your location there for free, but everyone is either American, chinese or spent enough time in the west to have downloaded it.
>>2728431I'm the planner for a group of 5 coming up in a couple of weeks. There are many whole apartments that can be booked / rented out for relatively cheap, comparable to booking multiple hotel rooms. Depending on the location, Airbnb can be decent. Location also makes a large difference i.e. staying in Shinjuku vs somewhere quieter like Ueno or Asakusa. If your group doesn't mind, you can also try hostels and sometimes you'll get lucky and have the whole place to yourselves.
>>2728491Really? Tinder worked better for me than in the US. I might have actually fucked up my ELO by swiping in the US now though
where's the best place to stay in tokyo and osaka?
Tinder is so demoralizing when you realize the girl you're talking to is also talking to 10 other guys.
>>2728551That’s also irl too fyi
>>2728413My fiance would have fun doing any of those activities. You sound like you've never had a gf.
>>2728468Business class seats especially are driving it up, since there's no way that's less than $6k round trip. Long gone are the days of China flooding the market with cheap seats, back in 2017 you could get round trip business class on ANA for $2800, or Asiana or a Chinese airline for sub $2200. It was a wild time.
>start departing tomorrow Bit anxious desu
I'm going to be taking a my first trip to Japan mid December. Don't wanna jump around, plan on staying on Kyushu for the majority of my time there. How's Iki Island, if I wanted to explore it for a few days? Tsushima?

>>2728551That's why you always move fast. Think of it like a social media video. You skip fast when it starts with "Hi my name is so and so and today"*SKIP* You gotta keep her interest and ask her out before the energy dies down and then if she says yes you stop messaging her until the date comes
