Academy is good and I realized I dont like this community.
I grew up watching Voyager with my single father. We didn't do much together but we watched Star Trek.

As a young adult I really got into it. I've watched every series and movie multiple times. I own them all on ITunes and some Blu-ray. Not every episode or movie is good of course, but I love Star Trek. Ive even been to the convention in Las Vegas.

I saw all the posts made here leading up to Academy wanting to say how its not for them or how people were going to hate it or how they hate all new Trek.

And it makes me sad that internet is such a miserable place. I mean scroll down a bit and you'll see the longest post over about someone who appears personally victimized by a show. Lol.

But as is everything these days. So full of decisive negativity. As bid this community a fairwell and mute it I just hope you all find happiness and hope for the future. Maybe a hope you'll find the Star Trek you're looking for.

Rate my black mirror episode plot: Uber is now the dominant everything app, like wechat on crack. It encompasses many subservices like UberJobs, UberEats, UberMeets, UberFights, UberFans, UberFuck. To unlock or lock certain services you adjust silders: Capitalism min/max, Personal safety min/max.
The episode plot follows a young woman hit with an unexpected bill who is due to escalating but humourously framed unfortunate outcomes forced to unlock and use more and more extreme services to make ends meet, all set within a single day. In the end she lucks out and pays all her debt off, and decides to celebrate by ordering some fancy food. Because of a minor mistake by the delivery driver she rates him 1/5 stars. The end.

How can you debate free will if you believe it doesn't exist at the end of the day?
40 replies and 2 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>217372067
>how can you not believe it was out of free will?
How can you determine that it was? The literal chemical makeup of your brain can determine your answers and choices. Your muscles move from a signal the brain sent moments before you decided to pick up the object.
>>
>>217372013
How many of you had the choice of where you were born? How many of you had the choice of who your parents were? How many of you had the choice of what elementary school you attended? How many of you had the choice of whether or not you were gonna get molested by your priest? If the answers to all of those are, "I didn't have a choice, then guess what?" You don't have free will.
>BUT I HAVE CHOICES AFTER THAT!
All those choices were made after you were molded by the experiences you had no say in. Including your height, your face, your race, your brain, so on and so on.
Free will is an illusion that we've conjured up so that we don't slowly start to lose our minds because of existential dread. Ironically, those of you "choosing" not to subscribe to determinism are likely doing so out of an inherent defense mechanism you have ZERO control over. Anyway, it doesn't matter one way or another. Believe or don't believe what you want. None of us have any control over each other. :)
>>
>>217375221
Adding an All-knowing Omnipotent God just complicates it. It creates a paradox. If God knows all and created it all then God controls the will of the creations. Yet people have the free will to deny a God exists?
>>
>>217372013
>How can you debate free will
You can debate the interpretation of "free will" since it's a concept, an idea, a thought, consisting of two words, which meanings aren't set in stone, words we human use a means of communication, linking together the thoughts we have among us. By debating these words, concepts, thoughts, ideas we seek to reach a clearer comprehension of them. Asking how you can debate such a thing exposures an inmature grasp of humanity, it's existance and its limitations.

Kino premise but I can tell by the trailer that it's total slop.
Anyone know of something similar that isn't slop? Cops or anyone finding a large sum of illegal money and trying to figure out what to do?
Not counting the obvious ones like The Shield, A Simple Plan or No Country.

>Terminator 1
>Heavily implied Novikov self-consistency principle; future cannot be altered, and attempts to alter the future result in it occurring (Reese getting with Sarah Connor creates John Connor, the Terminator's hand allows SkyNet to reverse engineer)
>Terminator 2
>lol actually you can change the future
Does Cameron not understand how time travel works, or did Gale Anne Hurd and William Wisher do the heavy lifting for the scripts and just weren't on the same page?

>T2 shits on T1's time travel mechanics.
NTA but so what if it does? T2 makes both films better by making the future alterable.
>>
>>217371162
You fail to understand that there are multiple interpretations of time travel's function in fiction. Terminator 1 is pretty heavily implied to follow the Novikov self-consistency principle, even if the characters don't know it. Kyle being sent back isn't an alteration, because he had always shown up in the past.

>>217370005
>Besides, self-consistency is dumb as fuck
Self-consistency is the only smart time travel mechanic. The only other way to get around the bootstrap paradox is essentially dimensional birthing due to the butterfly effect rather than actual time travel.
>>
>>217375498
Making the future alterable is fucking dumb. Worst form of time travel that isn't even really time travel.
>>
>>217375541
>Making the future alterable is fucking dumb
Why? Making the future absolutely set removes any stakes from the films. If the future is set then Sarah is not actually in danger at any point in the first film.

>that isn't even really time travel.
>Characters travelling back in time isn't time travel
Right, sure.
>>
>>217375614
>Making the future absolutely set removes any stakes from the films.
Making it so that any jackass can just go further back and erase everything that happened in the film is what removes the stakes. Nothing has any purpose or meaning when it's all chance that can be obliterated by the act of time travelling alone.

>>Characters travelling back in time isn't time travel
If the future can be altered, then they aren't really travelling back in time. They're travelling to or creating an alternate timeline/dimension, one where they did travel back in time.

DON'T watch House of the Dragon. HBO done fucked with our boy and lad, George R.R. Martin.
>“It’s worse than rocky, it’s abysmal. I hired Ryan. I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought.”
>When Ryan came to loggerheads with original Dragon co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, Ryan asked for Martin’s support in their dispute, and got it (Sapochnik left the show after season one).
>“Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me. I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn’t doing it. Other times, he would tell me, ‘Oh, OK, yeah, I’ll think about that.’ It got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed. Finally, it got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them and they would give Ryan our combined notes.”
>Martin says he can’t say anything beyond this. But sources say Martin and Condal’s relationship deteriorated further and came to a head during a Zoom call with the show’s producers and some HBO executives. The purpose of the call was for Condal to present his vision for season three. After Condal spoke, Martin detailed his many objections and allegedly declared, “This is not my story any longer.”
>After their contentious Zoom call, HBO asked Martin to step back from Dragon altogether. A few months later, the author was brought back aboard. “I can’t talk about it,” Martin says.
>“George and Ryan had a disagreement on the direction of season three,” an HBO insider says. “At that point, it was clear that the process and communication with them was broken and needed a reset. So there was naturally a period where everyone took a step back for a while until we could figure out a new way forward.”

Reminder it's a Neo-Freudian concept, and the pop-feminist explanation actually conflates it with objectiviation theory. The actual original essay this is based on is completely schizophrenic and it's largely just scenes of men looking at women.
