For me all that's new. If you believe in God you know he's described as infinite light and love, so the film in its agnostic presentation still hints at a higher plane in the very least, and the beings that inhabit it understand 'love' far better than mankind does, otherwise their plan with the wormhole would've failed. But if in somebody's worldview there's only matter then the story will make sense until it doesn't. Granted, there's still lots of mystery and unanswered questions, as there should be.
