Cut the entire Romulan plot and paste it in a Romulan-centric episode. Then have each of the three bond with one of the crew, the same way the woman did with Crusher. Show them going through the emotions and coming to terms with their reality, and end the episode with all three of them tentatively hopeful or excited to experience a new life in a utopia, with limitless possibilities for their future. This is a bigger change, but I'd also include a fourth rescued person who's completely fine and unfazed by the entire ordeal, ala the girl from The Voyage Home.
