One camp, certainly Gilliam's camp, is that dreaming/Sam's dreams are just as "real" and valid (if not moreso) than the actual world. The other camp, is that the actual (miserable) world is all that matters and dreaming/Sam's dreams are meaningless and worthless.If you're Gilliam's camp, it was a positive ending because no matter what they do to him, he's already gone and lost in his own dreams at the end.
