Just watched The Watchers. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good at all. The characters had no depth or relatability and the script was boring. The premise was fine but the plot development was bland and somewhat predictable. The natural impulse is to compare it to an M. Night Shymalan movie. In this regard I'd say that Ishana did a pretty good job distancing herself from her father. There were maybe one or two scenes that attempted to be "M. Night"-ish but even those fell flat. M. Night has a great way of contrasting his "otherworldly" storytelling by having scenes that concretely ground the viewer in a palpably real sense of our own typical, mundane world. There was a scene or two that tried to reference this, but mostly I feel like Ishana did a good job of making the movie mostly feel like an unrepentant fantasy movie. It'll be interesting if she to see if she follows that path or if she tries to perfect the ability to emulate her father in future movies. All in all it honestly wasn't bad for a first time director adapting an original story to the screen. I hope she makes more movies and continues to improve; I'd like to see her follow in the footsteps of her father by making new original sci-fi/fantasy/horror movies while trying to do her own thing and not be a carbon copy of him..

>>
>>200744497
There wasn't much before because America still considered itself mostly puritan with it's entertainment. This the time where broadcast television intentionally filmed Elvis from the waist up because they were worried he would go off script and shake his hips. Why it stopped in the 90s? Really good question. No idea. But the 80s were certainly the good ole days for that type of thing.

You know she was the coomer alternative where the audience didn't care about plot during the same period. The thing is all the stars around then also were kids stars/had been on lifetime etc. so a lot of the people who got big already had a contract where anything that could make companies like Fox or Disney look bad to middle America could be a legal sinkhole from which they didn't return. But on the other side, it's also the generation where doing something because the plot demands, including less dangerous stunts, became more common for actresses. You get a lot of action girls who are martial arts or gymnastics trained or on a wire to fill in the gap having a contract that would at most let you show a bare back
I mean, Demi Moore is in GI Jane in 1997 so it's not horror restricted so much as a general trend

>>
>>200717686
It was a potentially good story, it had cool elements to it but it was ultimately let down by dumb, unrealistic actions by the protagonists such as standing around when they actually needed to move their arses and genuinely making retarded decisions.

There were also massive plotholes that you just have to ignore like why nobody ever checked under the rug or why Madeline didn't just take the boat and fuck off whenever she wanted to because she'd already been down the hatch and should have already known all of that. I still liked it but it could have been a lot better, the ending was kinda retarded as well,
"oh there might be more of you out there"
"Oh, okay, I guess I won't kill you after all then, I'll just creep on you for some unknown reason.

I think that was the director's "poetic" way of illustrating the duality of being a half blood by saying "Hey, here she is living a life as a normal human, but she's also still "A Watcher." Get it.. she's still watching...

People told me Return of the Living Dead 2 was TERRIBLE and not worth watching. Wasn't that bad at all, nowhere near the worst sequel I've ever seen. Only real criticism I have is that it's not as good as Return of the Living Dead 1, which isn't a major criticism since most movies aren't as good as Return of the Living Dead.

It's a little bit tonally lighter, but the first one was already incredibly comedic. Didn't bother me.
>Doesn't play anything straight
It plays the danger of the zombies straight enough outside the gags. I didn't find RoTLD2 to be a very different movie than RoTLD1, other than being not quite as good. RoTLD2 is like a weird remake in a different setting, I enjoyed it. Would watch again.

>>200756339
My guess is that the original story it was adapted from was also pretty mediocre and this is basically everything that happened in the book.
I liked it because I like the mythos and I like modern horror with that particular historical folklore aspect to it.

Also the part where the professor supposedly brought 13 men every day to build the bunker and just left them there every night to get murdered was fucking retarded, how did they manage to bring in the materials needed every day on foot and how did nobody notice that hundreds if not a thousand or more men had just fucking disappeared and this one dude was recruiting blokes never to be seen again.

Are you lumping the Romero "Of the Dead" series in with Return of the Living Dead and its sequels? Because you shouldn't do that, they're different series. Dawn of the Dead is the actual sequel to Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead is a slightly-related "meta sequel" to Night of the Living Dead where they find out the movie actually happened in their world and the zombies come back. It's not related to Dawn of the Dead or Day of the Dead.

>The Exorcist - religious family drama
You're utterly illiterate and clearly blind. The Exorcist is about a man whose pillars of life are both in conflict with each other and crumbling around him, and he even ultimately fails, before taking it all back in the name of something he cares about. It could've been any family on that street, and (though less effective) any other religion. The namesake of the movie is the focus. Don't ever talk about films again.
>>
>>200764087
Those are all the horror movies I've seen in theater this year. I don't even like the bottom half at all. What's your list anon?

>You're utterly illiterate and clearly blind. The Exorcist is about a man whose pillars of life are both in conflict with each other and crumbling around him
You're very confident and smug for someone who doesn't realize that The Exorcist has three main characters and that it's about them all. The movie is about Karras, Chris, and Regan. Not just one of them, they're all equally important.

I'd recommend it. It's one of those low budget found footage movies that takes a bit to get going, but I thought it was worth the wait and it was overall a comfy watch. It helps that the cast was funny with the two friends constantly goofing around when the main guy is trying to be serious.

Better Watch Out does some interesting things with the concept. It's probably one of the better takes. The Purge meanwhile is sort of bland. The all crime being legal for one night aspect is way more interesting than masked killers terrorizing a family. On top of that, they got the actress that played Cersei / Sarah Connor and they wasted her as dumb useless wife that hardly does anything. I think Ethan Hawke might be in it too.
