>feels very ahead of it's time
Indeed, it likely inspired the entire slasher genre. I'm surprised /hor/ doesn't mention it more. The violence was very graphic for being a 1960s movie too, especially because it was a mainstream American film
>>203996221
I'd say it's horror, in fact, I think the director intended it to be a horror film too.
One scene in the film has Karloff's character (who is obviously based on Karloff himself) talks about how his horror films aren't scary to anyone anymore because of actual horrors like mass shootings becoming more common. This film was likely based on that idea (a horror film that would scare the audience by using a modern and realistic concept instead of a fictional or outdated one).

There is a horror metaphor angle but it plays out as a thriller. Karloff's presence was a major win in that it connects the dots you mentioned, as does the "thrill in the big screen" vs "thrill in real life" comparison

Friday the 13th is the only truly good big horror franchise. Literally all of the films, besides the Manhattan one, are worth watching
Every other franchise has like 3 or 4 good films at most, the rest is meh to shit (NoES, Halloween, TCM, Amityville, Hellraiser, etc)

I think this one was even worse than V. Remy was kinda cute, but none of the other women were great. Maybe rocker guitar girl but she was dead in no time. Asian girl is forgettable, blonde bitch was gross. Male protagonist was also forgettable. Boat and NYC setting were absolutely stupid. Soundtrack is lackluster as well. Worst Friday movie imo.

Carnival of Souls
The Uninvited
Cremator
Haxan
House on Haunted Hill
Jigoku

Lots of Japanese movies
Lots of 50s b-movies
etc
Their restoration standards are uneven with some recent releases being very criticized.

Went to an indie horror themed fest the last few days in Philly. Best films, coming to streaming and limited releases over the next few weeks:

>Párvulos (Mexico)
>Three young boys are learning to live in a new world after a global disaster -- but there's something in the basement. Beautifully shot in muted tones, Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban crafts a very personal story about youth, self discovery, and the horror of realizing how fragile the building blocks of a 'normal life' are, like an Amblin produced Night of the Living Dead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44WRVnk-gAQ

>All You Need is Blood (America)
>When an ancient evil turns his deadbeat father into a brain-eating zombie, a 16-year-old aspiring director named Bucky teams up with his friends to create the ultimate student film in what he considers to be the least respectable genre... horror. Absurdist, nostalgic, and heartwarming, this is a gross-out gory coming-of-age story for any cinephile who grew up in the videotape era. It’s Fellini’s 8½ made by kids, starring zombies. Opens with a running Jenkem joke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA3oB74AKE4

>Chainsaws Were Singing (Estonia)
>Adventures await when new lovers are separated by a chainsaw killer… Chainsaws Were Singing is an absolutely insane action-horror-musical-comedy B-movie epic from Estonia. Stupidly smart, vibes of Troma does Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Shot guerilla style in 2013, this true love letter to crowd-pleasing exploitation cinema then spent a modest 10 years in post-production before finally coming to it's American premier in Philadelphia.

Might as well finish em. Most F13 films are trash. Freddy has the stronger series, though Freddy's Dead kind of shits the bed. Jason is "scarier" in versus Freddy than in most of his own movies (better story too)
>>
>>203997937
Yeah a lot of their older releases are good
I don't get why /tv/ shits on them completely. If it wasn't for them a lot of great films wouldn't be released in good quality or released (on physical media, and thus, piracy too) at all
>>
>>203997995
Jason should have been an undead version of the terminator from the start honestly
>>
>>203998021
>I don't get why /tv/ shits on them completely.
It's a mix of contrarianism with autism about certain releases. Some of them are in fact below standards and mess with the original movie aesthetics but these should be seen on a case by case basis

the fact the final girl in the first one decapitates jboys mom i think is why it was so popular,
in TCM the girl just runs
in Black Christmas she kills the wrong guy, killer is a-okay in the end
in Halloween she fights back but killer is still alive and 'well'
but in Friday 13th Alice seriously fucks that bitch up and its far more satisfactory than the other 'showdowns' or lack of

The official explanation is that Jason was a human being and still alive in Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. That's why they have unmasked Jason look like a deformed guy instead of a zombie, like they would in the movies where Jason is meant to be undead.
If you want to "headcanon" him as being dead the whole time then you can, but it's dumb to argue with people about it.

Zombie Jason is better, agreed. The jumbled mystique the whole series had for us as kids in the pre-Internet era is best represented by the NES game, actually, with its insistence on the supernatural explanation.

So yes! I want a movie adaptation of the 8-bit game based on the series -- unironically. The mixed-up, supernaturally slanted IDEA of Jason Vorhees is itself better than any of the films.

it's neat to do a follow up album 10 years later
sears tower, wings, diewithme, not muchv a life are all good tracks, and starfall is weirdly poppy and accessible for them so thats neat
but rippity rap rap all over the damn thing, its too much, making an 10+ song album with 3 rap tracks surprisingly sprinkled throughout is fun but they overdid it this time :/

every time i watch the F13 movies and try to do the math on the in-universe timeline my brain melts. remy should be 40 years old by the time manhattan comes along.

jason dies in what was it, 1957? his mom comes back 20 years later or whatever and slays fools. then a year or so later, jason has a very long weekend in 1980 where he kills everybody and their sister.

then we follow li'l tommy jarvis from like 14 to his early 20s and during this time camp crystal lake has been renamed camp forest green and reopens and yadda yadda fuck zombie jason but here we are.

then they raze camp forest green and build real estate on it and in moves little miss tina and her pops whom she kills in the prologue, his final resting place somewhere near the jason corpse sunk by "Big" tom jarvis in part 6. 10 years later, tina resurrects jason and we know the rest.

then in part 8 the yuppies on the boat slaughtered in the beginning cruise past a sign for camp crystal lake. where did that come from? did they redevelop it and then cease operations AGAIN in the interim? even so, let's do the math:

1980 + 8 + 15 = 2003 by the time part 8 rolls around, AT BEST. remy should be fucking 70 in this if she ran into kid jason in the lake.

Jason in part 1-4 = White man
Jason in part 5 = Unknown, likely still white and male
Roy in part 5 = White man
Jason in part 6-8 = Black man
Jason in part 9 = White man again, his Michael jackson-adjacent race-swapping power was removed by the bees who stung him, as they took it for themselves to become niggas
Jason in part 10 = White man, the bee stings healed finally
Jason in FvJ = Black man, the /nigga/ magic returned and he's now a magical negro again
Jason in the 2009 remake = White man
Jason in the NES game = The ultimate mutt, he is every single race combined.

Goes to Hell is what happens when you hire a director who hates the source material and thinks he knows better than the audience.

Drayton Sawyer is actually Drayton Voorhees, the father of Jason
He left his wife after Jason "drowned", and went to go live with his Cousins, the Sawyers. He changed his last name so he could loose ties with Jason

Literal lack of ideas. I think either McBride or DDG or both revealed in an interview that in their "brainstorming" sessions about the movie they'd change stuff midcourse and had no idea how to end it. I did like the fact that the title doesn't lie and they really closed up the arc as unequivocally as possible but the trilogy is subpar and diminishing returns. The stronk wymmin trio was cringe and killing Judy Greer's character was a big mistake since she was the best actress of the bunch. JLC lost her fastball a while ago and was cringe

Exactly! It was an abysmal decision that was either grossly callous or grossly insensitive/dumb on the level of The Snowman's director/producers not realizing that keeping the name of the source material's main character would automatically become a joke and burden the movie

These fictional live events (Welles' WotW, Ghostwatch) will never happen again-- the best we can experience are movies such as LNwtD- and coverage of actual live events has moved to the internet.
For instance, when the Boston bombing occur, for a while there was a thrilling series of reddit livethreads with several snippets of info.
Some of it was misguided and reddit being ofc entirely controlled from the outside there was a massive social engineering campaign on the site to discredit and discourage other episodes with the same live pulse.

Calling The Guest a horror movie feels like a bit of a stretch, sorta like 8mm. Regardless, that was one of the best movies I’ve watched all month I think. The soundtrack, buildup of suspense, and action scenes were all great. My only small gripe was the ending because I didn’t care for the final reveal that Daniel had escaped wearing the firefighter uniform. I would have felt more satisfied knowing that the brother and sister had won and were safe but otherwise it was probably a strong 9/10 for me. Big thanks to whoever recommended me that one

Maybe just because it takes place around halloween or something, and it came out around the same time as It Follows and the Maika Monroe crossover makes my brain associate it with horror? Idk.

Kino, isn't it? Karloff's command of the audience (even the other actors) is effortless using his voice and expression only, he was very sick at the time of filming with breathing and mobility issues. Imdb trivia:
>The story that Byron Orlok tells in the film of the servant fleeing from Death is W. Somerset Maugham's short story "The Appointment in Samara." Reportedly, Karloff both nailed the telling of the story in one take and received a well-deserved standing ovation from everyone on the set.
