first Amityville kind of blows but the 2nd one goes pretty hard ramping up the evil happenings like a good sequel should. rest are pretty awful cashgrabs BUT Amityville 1992 is cool for fans of Italian style horror with the mood, imagery and sleaze, good director

>>
>>204022153
You have to pretend nowadays to get buy in from brainwormed Hollywood actresses. The monster is a big retarded >female< incest rape baby. The funniest character is a date rapist producer. aa feminist movie wouldn't make you enjoy Justin Long.
>>

>>
>>204022154
Nice mix. Lots of old school picks. Some of those remind me, I have to put together my definitive lesbian vampire list this year.
>>
>>204022035
Not at all, that part was normal and good. But I don't know if the police officer interactions coupled with the monster and its backstory were supposed to state that abused women aren't taken seriously enough and that everyone thinks they're the monsters for lashing out instead of the Men that made them that way. I mean, it's called Barbarian, ostensibly because of the big bad guy.
Or it's just like >>204022226 claims and the implications are just shoved in because that's enough to satisfy casual watchers.

I think like any art it can be whatever you can derive from its presentation. I can see those feminist themes. I'm also pulled the other direction knowing on a meta level how self proclaimed Hollywood feminists tackle such subject matter (see: "FASCIST FILMMAKERS FUCK OFF!"). I love the movie either way. It's rare to find such a well executed tone anymore.

It's funny/weird that the same people who despise critical theory - in particular that critical theory seeks to find progressive critiques of literally any and every work of fiction, no matter how neutral or mundane they may be - are the same people who accuse every single movie/show/fiction nowadays of having a progressive agenda, no matter how neutral or mundane they may be.

You are exactly the type of person you despise.

Watched Oddity, found it aggressively mediocre. It kinda gave away its (admittedly very obvious) twist at the same time as the movie really got going (halfway into its runtime).

Biggest crime was the waste of a concept. I know want a film about keeper of curios fighting off home invaders using nothing but cursed objects.

Fulci makes literal slop. The plots are nonsensical, the characters are boring as shit and forgettable, the dialogue is always dull and poorly dubbed, and the films are simply just not interesting enough to keep anyone's attention so you just sit there and patiently wait for some decent gore every 20+ minutes in between all the slow and reptitive shit. >>
>>204025655
Probably Noroi. The shot of the boy caught me really off guard, last time I was unsettled by a horror.

I'm not sure if I was scared of it exactly but the last shot of Incantation was a great payoff (and a decent movie in general), only Lake Mungo bettered it on a build up to one moment.

sometimes i like watching a visually unpolished rip of a horror flick. it reminds me of the dvd days.
>>
>>204025272
This. I understand why people like it and choose to resonate with what it did well, but it was just a bit too thin for me. Hopefully someone runs with that same concept but does the rest of the movie a lot better while finding a different, unique way of presenting it.

If you were a kid/teen in 2003 you'd have to be in the cross section of "has money to spend" and "is very enthusiastic about music." The culture of "I have to have the newest release of digital device X" didn't exist yet. It was "are you still listening to tapes or are you listening to CDs" and the idea of mp3s were still most widely known as that embedded audio file on a webpage. I think I got my first iPod in 2004 or 2005 and it was the first luxury item I had bought as an adult in my life.
>>
>>204026431
You know what, I take that back. I was using napster in the late 90s and limewire in the early 2000s and was definitely burning mp3s onto CDs. I got some of that wrong but I'm pretty sure the majority of American teens had a discman over an mp3 player in 2003.

It was good. Not sure how good it was (pretty good or really, really good). I'm going to have to sit on this and maybe not know until a rewatch a year or two down the line finds its time. It toes the line between thoughtful, poignant indie film and overly competent body horror and for whatever reason that's what's tripping me up on where this lands. The first half is incredibly strong as an indie thriller/drama. When the horror hits it starts to maybe take on too much for what it is, juggling the two genres. Without giving away spoilers, there's a lot missing within the exposition of the cause of what makes this a horror movie. But I think that's the movie's biggest fault and it's not terrible. The cinematography/editing and aesthetic is proficient and modern. This is not a movie you should just have on in the background: the visual storytelling is very well crafted and if you don't have your eyes glued to the screen you may as well not watch it. The acting from the older side of the cast is really good but some of the younger cast, including the younger female lead, falls short in a lot of places - enough to pull you out of the moment, unfortunately. I think it's a must see if you're into new, intelligent and slick horror drama/storytelling.

I liked it for the most part. Sam is one of the only successful new Halloween "mascots." The opening had a classic feel to it. The werewolf bit was great. There was definitely something just a little uninspiring about it, though. I'm having trouble putting it into words without sounding ridiculous. I want to call it the taint of modernity or something, like it being made in 2007 was the problem, but, hell, that was uncomfortably many years ago now.
