Just finished this and it was pretty decent. Not incredible but also not terrible, definitely had some frightening concepts and sequences, also had one or two of the more effective “jump scares” I’ve seen in anything newer in a while. It sort of fell off a bit by the third act like a lot of these paranormal investigation movies tend to but especially early on like during the bedroom camcorder scene or the whole chain of events with the kids corpse that keeps coming back I was pretty glued to it

Could be. Any recommendations on what you've watched recently? As I've gotten older, it's harder to find the time to sitdown and do a double feature, or a single movie everyday. But, I think I will change that today.

Spooktober 2/31 last night
Watched The Night Stalker (1972)
Not my thing, I feel as though, like most older horror movies, it struggles to actually get you into the story. Feels like they haven't quite yet nailed how to do things yet so it just feels off. There's also effectively no effects and a good amount of bad shots/cuts as can be expected. It also felt like it didn't really have anything going for it, just a pretty shallow vampire movie that often felt more like a detective movie than a horror one.
4/10
>>
>>204105494
Very nice. I'm currently downloading Lady in White and Longlegs. I was thinking of Speak No Evil as well. I gotta get it together or I'm ngmi.

>>204105535
That's a shame. I feel like the 1970s is such a high watermark for horror--Alien, The Exorcist, Suspiria, The Omen, Don't Look Now, etc.; etc.

The last horror movie I can remember watching was Viy (1967) and that's been a while
>>
>>204105424
Hard to rec without a sense of your tastes. One of my favorite to come out this year is Cuckoo, though. Definitely a great film.
>>
>>204105595
I think I just like the newer style of horror movies more, obviously there's a few stellar horror movies that stick out. Alien, the thing, don't look now, the exorcist, the shining, etc. but surrounding them are a lot of movies trying to get their bearings in horror and I imagine they were likely better received in those days but going back to them now just feels like they're missing things
>>
>>204101693
That’s actually one of the next couple ones down to watch for this month on my list but I’m going to bump it up to this coming evening since you guys reminded me, thanks anon. I’ll be Bach
>>
Who's stocking up on Temu Halloween garbage this year? I love this chintzy shit.
>>
>>204105676
That's a compelling question. I always liked creature features or movies about ghosts/demons/possessions. I dislike body horror, so like Raw (Grave) or Inside (À l'intérieur), which I know The Exorcist is a body horror film to some extent, but eh I have my limits and boundaries. Also, Martyrs made no sense to me. I found it completely unintelligible, also I was very drunk and saw it when it came out, so that might've had something to do with it
>>204105706
There will always be B-movies, exploitation, cheesy horror movies, the direct to video films of their day and nowadays etc. I think the last horror film I enjoyed was the VVitch, which is saying something. Fwiw, I tend to enjoy older horror films.
>>
>>204101673
To be honest, I prefer the crazy shit to Lake Mungo level. I thought Mungo was intriguing and had this entire narrative of twists and turns that I really liked but it just sort of falls so flat on its face by the last ten or so minutes. Maybe it’s because people were hyping it up so much that it couldn’t possibly live up to the buzz but I tried to go in relatively blind and all I knew was people all over this board and others kept saying “oh lord, that one scene when you see it is so chilling to the bone,” so when it happened I was like.. okay.. that was underwhelming. 90% of the movie is creepier than whatever that mildly eerie thing I saw coming from a mile away was
>>
>>204101879
But can I overestimate it? Please?
>>
>>204105706
>just feels like they're missing things
That's how it feels trying to watch modern horror.
>>
>>204104140
I almost feel like you shouldn't watch them both at the same time for the first time because they’re both so fucking good but south different movies that depending on which you watch first you’re going to potentially be robbing yourself of the crazy feeling of watching an incredible movie for the very first time and it could go both ways. Trust me, they’re both ones that you’ll want a few to think about and decompress afterwards and while if you’d seen them or even one of them before I’d say hell yeah rock on that’s a great double feature, don’t do yourself the disservice of not having two insanely great werewolf movie experiences rather just one that’s going to be almost too much of a disparately brutal sensory overload. If anything plan them for consecutive nights and definitely start with American Werewolf in London
>>
i think im the only one on this board who didnt like dog soldiers that much.
>>
>>204106016
It was bretty meh. It's just, the only decent werewolf movie that isn't wolfman stuff. That's why.

Wow, it's sort of insane how every studio just used to make one or two horror films a year. Now it's all A24, Lionsgate, or some independent film.
>>
>>204106016
Nah I hear you, I like Dog Soldiers and all but it definitely does get hyped up a bit much on here. Probably because they came out within a few years of each other so I watched them both around the same time, I feel like Ravenous is a movie that’s much more deserving of the prestige Dog Soldiers gets and one that I don’t hear discussed nearly as much even though I’ve always felt it was t away better movie.
>>
>>204106110
And yeah I know werewolves and wendigo aren’t the same but they both remind me of a very specific time in place in the early 2000s coming right out of the 90s which was objectively not the greatest decade for straight horror movies
>>
>>204105535
It's a crossover genre of the era, so I love it. Journalists exposing shit was a feature of the era, and there's this kind of disjointed paranoid investigative almost first person kind of movie that exists in all genres at the time. if you're not into the buckwild paranoid politics of the era though, most of those movies are someone blindly wandering through bizarre events between getting drunk and having a complicated sex life
>>
>>204106180
I felt disjointed BECAUSE people saw him as some crazy schizo even when he's saying it's someone who acts like a vampire. I feel like if two bodies were found in more recent movies or shows with bite marks on the neck and blood sucked out most people would assume that
He didn't really put too much belief in it being an actual vampire till his wife showed him the book and he saw the shit the vampire could do at the hospital, at which point fair assumption honestly. If I saw a man throw someone like that and shrug off point blank shots I'd be quick to assume something isn't normal

maybe not so much terrain wise but more from the people perspective. guys descending into a dark pit to partake in strenuous manual labor in tight, damp spaces, using explosives, exposing themselves to all kinds of potential hazards, etc. I also like the appearance of the aboveground stuff like the big tipples, coal refuse piles, company housing etc. I grew up in a former mining region and always liked hearing stories from the old guys that lived that stuff

Before the BBQ accident it looks like a totally different movie. The production quality is much higher, better sets and props, and the visual style is more like "early 90's weird," compared to the rest of the movie which looks more low budget 80's generic, almost like an episode of Night Court. Yes it still has great scenes and the movie is still good, but I find the sudden change to be jarring (especially as a huge fan of early 90's weird media).

You and your frens/family are on a road trip when the car breaks down. Would you rather it happen in the same place as The hills have eyes or the texas chainsaw massacre?
Radiated mutant cannibals in the middle of nowhere new mexico, or inbred redneck cannibals out in the boonies in Texas?
Which would be worse?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre for me, it seemed an area where more people pass through.
Also the foes seem outrun-able.

it's too hard to hide and survive in a desert

Texas. It would be way harder to get away in those hills.

Yeah but its got fucking leatherface too, and if its the remake fucking R Lee Ermey posing as a cop, youd be so fucked. At least you can tell who the mutants are and immediately know theyre up to no good. Aint none of you autists who would talk back when R Lee Ermey pulls you over and arrests you.

I watch Return of the Living Dead most years but I'm skipping it this year to make room for a few other movies.
