This movie is a must watch every Halloween. Our teacher showed us this movie in class when we were 10. In the first 20 minutes a kid is locked in the school peg room and witnesses the ghost of a child reliving her murder by strangulation. Great teacher.

Holy shit, how could they fuck up this bad? The cut out all the character development and just jumped straight to the action. The action itself isnt scary or original; its basically bloodless conjuring scares. They might as well have called this something else as nobody resembles the characters in the book. Even divorcing this from the book leaves a mediocre movie that jumps the gun without properly setting itself up. Just when you think you are going to get a faithful or even entertaining r rated adaption. I mean IT chapter 1 is a flawed adaption of the book but at least its entertaining. Salems Lot is more like IT chapter 2 in that it doesnt know what its doing and is a waste of time.

I finally bought the OG Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman. Don't give a shit about the Mummy. Doesn't even belong among the big 3.
>>
>>204182390

It feels like it but the characters dont seem to have any arc that i can tell. Mark Petrie doesnt even seem to be afraid or emotional about whats happening around him. Ben Mears trauma regarding the Marsten house is completely skipped over. The scares and atmosphere is just laughable imo and that finale is just terrible. Way to undercut the big bad of your movie. I dont see what added material could make this better.
>>
>>204182454
>Don't give a shit about the Mummy

The Mummy is probably my favourite. I love the slow burn atmosphere.
>>
>>204182493
the movie was supposed to open up with the ghost in the marsten house which would've given reason to why he believed in vampires to fast
it was just tons of character stuff that he had to cut away because they told him it "muddied the waters"
>>
>>204182508
I don't hate it, but it's not the iconic movie monster quality of the others. They're always bundling them all together.
Besides, Karloff already plays Frank. He only gets one.
>>
>>204179907
I watched this last year and barely remember it. The one thing that was ok was the suicide scene, it was filmed in an interesting way.
>>
>>204182532

I would have liked to see it but better yet the whole point of the book is missed by cutting out all the side characters. The town invites evil upon itself. Hubie Marsten corresponded with Barlow and performed sacrifices to aid his coming before killing himself. Barlow attracts people to his night kingdom by preying on their resentments and desires. These are the things which make the story interesting. Without them you are left with a standard vampire story. They probably thought with the success of IT you could just skip to the action but IT at least had the main points of the book down (even if it was shallow in retrospect) and pennywise is more original a monster than vampires. You have to do something really special with vampires these days to get peoples attention. It probably should have been a series as its basically an old fashioned but realistic soap opera with gossip and scandal that introduces a vampire into the mix.

It's a metaphor for truth/life. It's fantastical to believe that she would even be able to see that answer in the end, but it's fiction. The satisfaction, as a viewer, is that she gets that answer in the end. That's what makes the fiction desirable. What makes the fiction presentable to us, as viewers, is the withholding of the answer. Because no answer would legitimately (in our non-ficton world) be satisfiable. And that, partly, is what is expressed when the older woman kills herself. It is also, partly, the idea that the answer/truth IS satisfaction in it's truest form (which substantiate why the most richest and powerful are looking for it and wanting it for themselves.) But satisfaction in it's purest form is also the zenith of terror and antithetical to life, which is why she kills herself and which is why the vessel for receiving the answer is innocence/purity/ascetic. It's actually a very simple concept. It's why people always say that winning the lottery makes your life worse.

Refusing to tell the other secret society members is still dumb. If it is a kindness, they don't deserve kindness for tortures. If it is a punishment, it falls flat because there was nothing established that they couldn't repeat the process. They imply that over the years they've been getting better and better at the system.

Everyone shits on modern horror, but honestly the 90s mightve been the most barren decade. Even the 00s were better for horror.

Idk what it was. Maybe by the 90s people were just burned out on the 70s and 80s. It's why a film like Scream was so popular.

90s was pretty based for horror, even outside of the Scream teen wave of the second half that spawned the second Brat Pack memes.
The early 90s are especially packed. It opens with Misery and It, and you get weird shit with big names and backing like doing Bram Stoker's Dracula as a Victorian melodrama or 12 Monkeys, or even the quirky horror comedy vein that gives the Addams Family two movies. I mean, it's a decade that has horrors specifically aimed at adult female audiences, not just mostly male teens, while also getting mainstream established stars and basically all the teen idol talent in high budget production. It builds to a point where you've got mainstream studios paying more for ensemble horror reboots than other genres.

I was thinking if i liked the ending, because I was really into the thriller part of the movie, and the end kind of took me off guard. But i really like the combination of the serious part and the stupid part.

>>204179318
My ranking of the segments
Abduction/Adduction - 1/10
>Completely throws out an actual narrative to the wrap around tapes and has modern Reddit YouTubers in it
Stork - 6/10
>I like the practical stuff but in a found footage movie I don’t want annoying background music and I wish the alien wasn’t just a bird
>Also I hated the obvious cuts instead of hidden cuts makes it so lazy and like they didn’t even try
Dream Girl - 6/10
>For a sec I thought they were going a Amateur Night route with the girl saying I like your face but the gore was good just the constant cuts was so distracting
Live and Let Dive - 9/10
>Probably the best VHS segment since Slumber Party Abduction
>CGI is a big bad but overall it felt like a VHS 2 segment
>There was a jumpscare that really got me and I was hoping that he would get tractor beamed while ski diving but the scene where he did get lifted up was awesome
>The acting was actually amazing and the aliens were awesome
Fur Babies - 5/10
>Really boring and there was no sci fi element
Stowaway - 5/10
>What the fuck were they going for here?
>It tries to do what 10/31/98 does with flashbacks to her childhood to make you like her but fails because the characters in that segment were likable
>The girl could not act for shit and how many dicks did the girl from IGN have to suck to be in this movie
>They did nothing with the alien
>Wouldn’t the healing lights just fix her body to its original state instead of deforming it?
>I get she was going light speed but seemed like a plot hole and I wanted to see how she fully turned out at the end
>Also the segment just ends
So yeah VHS Beyond is like a 6
They really didn’t try with this one and they definitely didn’t earn the montage at the end like the first movie did
I think what they should do is make a theatrical VHS 3 that brings the series back to it’s roots and right back to 2012/2013 edgy nostalgia
I’ll stick with the kino that is VHS 1 and 2

>>
>>204185414
have you posted this on letterboxd or 4chan before?

I'd argue the science element in fur babies is the medical procedures needed for their mouths and whatever.

also, in stowaway, that wasnt her as a kid, it was her own kid, she says something like "yeah steven this proves Im a bad mother". also, the lights didnt have her dna because no human had been preserved in the goo like the octopus or the spider, so I assume the lights just used whatever they could to try and help her. thats a really interesting concept imo because they were trying to help, and the little mexican girl says they wanted to take her hamster but they didnt, so that further proves the aliens werent looking for trouble. she should've just asked for the exit I think.

>If it is a kindness, they don't deserve kindness for tortures. If it is a punishment, it falls flat because there was nothing established that they couldn't repeat the process
That's the thing. It's both. It's both a kindness and a punishment. That's the terror of both truth and life. But life is something we are all more accustomed to, and she continues to grant that to the rest of the society. Whatever path they choose to follow is still up to them. She knows the answer destroys agency, which is why she destroyed herself. She is allowing the society to maintain that agency, which is a kindness and a punishment; which is both the essence of life and truth.
> it falls flat because there was nothing established that they couldn't repeat the process.
Maybe, but that's also a part of the unknown which is essential to agency. Also, isn't the MC heavily implied to be approaching Messiah status? If that's so, the lore of the Messiah is that they only come once so often. They can improve their process all they want, but without the right vessel it's meaningless.

The reason this level of vagueness of finality works is simple. Martyrs is high level film, high level literature, high level philosophy and high level fiction. Such things are almost always reductive, recursive, tautological, and non-predicative in nature. By mid point of the movie you, as an intelligent and experienced consumer of such things, should have known you weren't going to get a "literal answer" and should have been looking forward to how the authors were going to diffuse, obfuscate and rejuvenate such a concept. The creators of Martyrs knocked it out of the park. Movies like The Matrix fail because they attempt to give you a literal solution and when they do they being to fall apart and rely on rote and trite storytelling techniques that go nowhere and bring about a palpable sense of failing dissatisfaction.

Rating system:
Excellent!
Worth a watch!
Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)
Hot Garbage!

Beezel (2024) – A low-budget Worth a Watch that *feels* like Halloween. A naked green witch with skinny droopy titties and the worst case of increased femoral anteversion you’ve ever seen (makes her feet turn inward, opposite of pigeon toes) lives in the basement of a ranch-style house. How did she GET there? Where did she COME from? Did she come with the land, moving in when they built the place? Was she beamed there in the 1960s during a DMT-fueled ritual? You never know, and the lack of hint in either of these regards can said to be among the film’s fairly minor sour points. The evil witch lives on human flesh and has a dedicated feeder living in the house most times, and depending on how susceptible they are to her PSYCHIC FIDDLING, they either get off on it (“It’s really fascinating, the way she goes at it!”) or they moan and groan and keep providing for her begrudgingly.

Things move fast! Three short scenarios make up an altogether short movie: three different generations of feeders and victims who come into the property and contend with the UNPLEASANT APPETITE of good ol’ Green Tits. There’s no true ending per se, but it’s actually a funny sort of *thematic* ending -- a CYMBAL CLASH if you will, a punchline to a morbid joke that’s set up earlier in the film. It worked well enough, though I didn’t feel quite satiated by it.

You’ve got to admire when people make clever use of a small budget! Beezel looks good ‘n’ nasty, like a fleshy, KY Jellied version of one of those classic hook-nosed school decoration witches turned exhibitionist. I was a bit shocked by some of the house’s design choices, but I guess I *learned* something. You see, there’s an honest-to-goodness window -- a standard sashed WINDOW in the freaking shower! Who the heck does that? Horny single ladies trying to drag in the neighborhood boys? I didn’t know what to make of it, but then I did some research and I guess some people *do* do that.

This would have been kino if they just showed some restraint. They didnt have the budget to pull of the effects and it blurs the line between found footage and scripted film too often (along with overacting). Ghostwatch got it just right even though some people think its over-acted. Believe me when i say that I grew up with those presenters and types of programs and that is how they acted normally.

Based. As long as you include jump scares in the gag reel too
>>

Mothman Prophecies is a better book than movie desu
>>
>>204189914
I liked this movie but if the girls in the movie were ugly I would not have liked it at all. James Remar is always great though

I saw Mothman last year as part of my horror binge, wound up being my favorite film of the month, incredible atmosphere.
>>
>>204189914
Perkins should cast her in something again
>>
Rec me some medieval horrors fellas, please.
>>
>>204189981
Love Lies Bleeding has a ton of horror elements and weird enough atmosphere to be considered horror adjacent.
>>
>>204190016
It had good atmosphere but the final twist didn't work for me because Kiernan Shipka and Emma Roberts don't look alike at all and they're not far apart enough in age to account for major differences.
>>
The only horror movie about muh female experience that I liked was The Perfection

what'd you think of 12 Hour Shift?
tryin to decide if it belongs in the category of 'honorary horror' / horroradjacent
>>
>>204190167
Horror is probably a strong word but I like that one about the blacksmith, errementari or whatever it's called
>>
>>204190014
Ooo I gotta check that out.

>>204190181
Idk, I think that’s a stretch. It’s pretty usual a24 “atmosphere”. Like would you consider Beau is Afraid horror? Sure it’s got horror elements and there’s even a monster in it, but I wouldn’t call that horror.
>>
>>204190502
Warning: the movie is not even an adaptation of the book, it's more or less an adaptation of the book's through line, which was about the events the author experienced leading up to the bridge disaster, it's really more just a book of interesting and strange stories.
>>
>>204190502
that's why I say it's horror ADJACENT
>>
>>204190562
Additionally: if you like the book, Keel has two other books that are approximately the same format, The Eighth Tower, and Operation Trojan Horse. Really interesting stuff if you have any interest at all in ufology or general forteana.

Maybe don't read the book or look any further into it then, if you haven't already. The actual Indrid Cold story is really really really sketchy and lame.
