Crawl which is great
The Flood which is the same premise as Crawl but worse in every way
Black Water: Abyss
Amusingly enough all 3 are also about crocs
Bait is shark related and about a tsunami but kinda similar in theme as a flood anyways since the main place the movie takes place in gets flooded

31 Nights of Horror, 2024
>Day 10: The Devil's Rock
Somehow, New Zealand made a good film. A smalltime WWII picture about - of course - Nazi occultism gone wrong. The Devil's Rock stretches a small budget, small cast, and confined set into an effective character-driven piece. Surprisingly reserved without getting boring, the SFX, sparingly used, are actually pretty good. There's a lot of predictable shit in the plot, but maybe we can call it "archetypical". I liked this movie. Would recommend.

It's bad. Here's why. In terms of aesthetics and form, the director bit more than he could chew: -a blaring soundtrack that tries too hard (Beethoven, oldies, opera etc etc are thrown at the spectator in a very injudicious way);
-overuse of colors and lighting that wants to be Bavaish but just looks excessive; the reddish light used to show who the characters really are quickly becomes a type of narrative cop-out; --camera moves going round the characters etc also come across as gimmicky and tryhard
Narratively, it's muddled but not impossible to follow. Some of the motivations change suddenly and the characters and lots of what they say is very annoying. There's no point of reference, they all suck to different degrees.
It is essentially Bodies Bodies Bodies (also awful) plus a vague (but inferior) resemblance to some of Talk to Me's tropes/dynamics plus a type of whodunit that becomes a type of intrigue. To make things even more catastrophic, the ending resorts to the failed ESG cliches: one woman sends her bf to prison for trivial reasons (he was innocent) and another one-- the victim at the party that established a lot of the plot's premises-- ends up with the money and the contraption used to swap identities.)

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to appreciate V/H/S: Beyond. The found footage format is groundbreaking, a revolutionary step in the genre that shatters the boundaries between the viewer and the story. Each segment, a living nightmare, is a work of art that pushes the limits of fear and perception. The fragmented storytelling, the disturbing visuals, and the unconventional structure all contribute to a cinematic experience that’s not for the faint of heart.

V/H/S: Beyond isn’t just a horror anthology; it’s an exploration of the human condition, a meditation on existential dread and the fragility of reality. The way it bends time and space, manipulating the viewer’s sense of immersion—it’s something only truly perceptive minds can grasp. You wouldn’t understand it if you don’t have a background in psychological horror, surrealist cinema, or if you’re not capable of understanding abstract symbolism in media. Most people just watch it for the jump scares, but those with the intellectual depth can appreciate the deeper meanings at play.

It’s not just a film—it’s an experience, an invitation to confront your deepest fears. But honestly, unless you’re mentally prepared to question everything you thought you knew about reality, it might just be too much for you.

It had all the nonsensical decisions and cliches that are expected of the genre when it goes into a somewhat oddball premise (as opposed to a more realistic survivalist or natural horror approach). To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Under Paris. At its core, this film transcends the conventional horror genre, delving into the depths of the human psyche with the ferocity of its titular shark. The narrative is a labyrinthine exploration of existential dread, revealing how our deepest fears lurk just beneath the surface, waiting to be confronted.

The cinematography is a masterclass in juxtaposition, contrasting the serene beauty of the Parisian underworld with the grotesque violence of the shark’s predation. Each frame is imbued with layers of meaning, inviting the discerning viewer to contemplate the dichotomy of civilization and primal instinct.

Most audiences dismiss it as mere entertainment, failing to appreciate the film's profound commentary on the fragility of human existence. They overlook the intricacies of character development, where each protagonist embodies a facet of the human condition, ultimately leading to a cathartic confrontation with their innermost fears. It’s not just a shark movie; it’s a philosophical inquiry into what it means to be human.

>>204391285
Essentially 2 reasons:
-once in a while, there are discussions where 2 different types of movies (say VHS vs F13's franchises) are compared and the guy who loses the discussion keeps fuming and seething. Also happens when you're talking about a movie (say It Follows) and you realize that the other person is a dimwit so you have your say and move on. These types display that Dunning-Kruger confusion when they're faced with their limits so they keep fuming and are triggered out of the blue and try to "win the discussion" literally hours or even days after it was finished.
-a variation of that is that type of set in his ways midwit who lacks confidence and whose tastes (or lack thereof) are so provincial and rigid that he's triggered into cringe tirades when a movie he dislikes is mentioned. It's a type of retardation that makes it hard for them to understand not all discussions necessitate their otherwise content-free input but also that to criticize a movie you need to present arguments.
Also keep in mind this is less ppl than you assume, probably a handful of types who spent too much time online, are undereducated and reek of sexual frustration.

No, it's one of the best recent entries in the franchise, with Live and Let Dive being one of the best episodes of any VHS movie.
The Indian one is predictable but all are enjoyable and more action-focused (they had a being-inside-the scene vibe that's interesting). The plots themselves were overall to the point this time around but the fact that the franchise went into other directions (including real facts and people) was an excellent choice.
It also has a great use of other types of filming technique: the parachute, dog and throat cameras for instance

Lmao Live and Let Dive is dogshit. The concept is basic as fuck, the alien has a completely uninspired design, it's not scary nor gory nor thought-provoking . The indian one is also garbage, it's just poorly shot gore fest with no background, context or meaning. I mean I could accept it if at least it was decent gore, but it's cheap as fuck.
The only decent segments are the first one which is kinda fun, though unoriginal, and the one with the crazy bitch turning people into dogs, that at least has a gruesome concept.
