Fulci was indeed very inventive and had both an eye for composition etc as well as an unfettered imagination.
Ultimately, no horror director made movies as beautiful as Bava. It can be argued his filmography is the most consistently aesthetic in all cinema along with Kubrick's and Visconti's.

Her sudden wide-eyed reaction at 0:04 seems forced and lacks subtlety, her hand move at 0:18 is likewise too theatrical and when the flash of light hits at 0:20 she looks patently amateurish and the contrast with the serene specks shimmering in the light highlights that. From 0:29 on her excesses resemble a 1920s silent movie where the actors had to drive the point home in an overly dramatic way.
She has charisma and the adequate vulnerable looks but her acting on that scene is subpar and didn't match its tone

>Bill Murray was quoted as saying "If you see one movie this year, it should be Frankenhooker." Henenlotter said that Murray had been editing his film Quick Change and hung out with the Frankenhooker crew. After Murray expressed interest in their film, the distributor attempted to get an endorsement from him. Embarrassed that they would abuse Murray's friendliness, Henenlotter attempted to avoid Murray. When they eventually ran into each other, Henenlotter apologized and explained that he was not responsible. Satisfied with the explanation, Murray volunteered a quotation.[11]

Rating system:
Excellent!
Worth a watch!
Good Job! Not Worth Watching! (well-made but pointless and dull)
Hot Garbage!

Cobweb (2023) – Another firmish, Worth a Watch entry in the BEAST GUARDIAN sub-genre -- and another film in which the *build-up* to the ultimate horror is more interesting than the bloody climax itself. We have Peter, a wormy little kid with a girly haircut who lives in a Bradburian suburb around Halloween, in an old, creaky (maybe late Victorian) house. Every night for a long time, Peter has been hearing thumps and scratches behind the walls of his room; then, one night, he hears a little girl’s *voice* telling him that his mom and dad are not what they seem. It doesn’t help that mom and dad are creepy, socially awkward types who always seem to be hiding something.

The opening Halloween atmosphere is just perfect in this, and as is *de rigueur* with so many horror movies these days, the setting seems to be dialed back a bit in time, despite the presence of modern conveniences like smartphones. Everything is mustier, older, less plastic and resin -- much more dry-rotted wood and rusty metal. The ambiance feels so right, and the everyday horror of a timid boy who is picked on by classmates, haunted by nightmares, and finally HORRIFIED of his own parents resonated with those vulnerable childhood parts of me.

2/2

As the poster who recommended this to me stated, Cobweb feels very much like an EXTREME Goosebumps -- or perhaps a feature-length extension of a Tales from the Darkside episode -- and there is certainly something of the campfire charm you’d expect in either. However, many questions are raised early on, and the film’s refusal to answer them take it well down from Excellent. So much time is spent on the MECHANICS of long-term home imprisonment, but no explanation is given for why a being who can rip a man in half at the waist and bore an arm-hole through a wooden wall cannot simply come OUT of the same wall when it suits its purposes. When Peter’s concerned teacher -- who has a gigantic DUMPTRUCK ASS which I can see some of you enjoying -- sees corpses around her pupil’s house . . . why does she not immediately dial 911? When there’s lots of nuts ‘n’ bolts early on, much follow-up is required.

The ending is a little weak and abrupt; the final threat toward Peter seems rather hollow. But in no wise is Cobweb boring! And just as some segment of you will almost certainly enjoy Ms. Devine’s prodigious badonka-donk . . . another will likely fall in lust with Peter’s big sister.

I thought the central premise was interesting but it was all a bit style over substance, and not all of that style even worked. Some of the visuals are great but then you've got stuff like the early sequence of him walking through the halls with the writing of the messages she was leaving him about the show appearing on screen. Real second hand embarrassment "oh we're actually doing this" shit. It also just doesn’t spend enough time with the characters to care about their shit lives. To give it the benefit of the doubt I guess it’s to emphasise the “time is going too fast, these lives aren’t real” idea but we don’t get time to connect with their real selves either so why am I going to care when things go bad for them? I barely know these people.

>Neither the scientist nor the soldiers had enough resources to achieve their goal, the pilots knew it was a lost cause and the best option would be to escape to an island and start civilization anew.
lets be real about this, if they worked together on exterminating them, it would be a couple of months clean up at best. they had a helicopter, now you only need make sure to attract a bunch with some sort of bait and then bomb or napalm them. making gunpowder and bullets shouldnt be much of an issue, just requires coordinated labour amongst the survivors. and if any country is overrun by zombies, it wouldnt be america just for the massive amounts of guns and ammo in the country. the experimenting can be done after the threat is significantly lowered. i mean, how far would zombies wander around? they would logically would only need to secure their city at first and barricade possible large entryways, just in case there is something like a horde of zombies migrating for reasons. after this you go about experimenting and scavenging extensively for better equipment and attempt to make contact with other, guaranteed safe havens (as said, its the US of A)

I agree on the style over substance. But again, it's nostalgiabait and the main audience for that wants gel pens and bisexual lighting. It doesn't need as much of it as it has, but a lot of that shit is bang on the mark for 90s nostalgia.
I disagree about it not being long enough on the characters. Overall, it's got the feeling of a well fleshed out short story in terms of plot, but combined with a significant part of the run time being
>member when
It probably feels too short by comparison. It's a solid plot, bit too much on neon shots, and probably something where if you were the kind of kid who liked The Smashing Pumpkins you can get over it being a lingering on the weakest elements. Glad they left enough ambiguity there you don't know enough to know what the right choice was, because forcing that would have ruined it

Nta, but the wisest choice would be to hold out on an island or some other secured location while the zombie population rots to a degree as to "threaten their mobility", as Dr. Frankenstein mentioned. He also mentioned something about a general time frame, although it wasn't definite, but my point is that if they could just hold out someone safe for long enough, the problem would fix itself. Which is what the survivors ended up doing.

"When I was thinking of Phenomena, I imagined that between 1940 and 1945 there had been a very serious incident, the war, and that the Nazis had won. After thirty-forty years, the people had wiped this dramatic event from their memories and didn't talk about it anymore. In reality though, the Nazis won the war, and life therefore has a totally different vibe, it's a world where the Nazi order won. If the movie is watched attentively, then it is obvious that, from that perspective, whoever made it was working from this principle."

Very interesting, did not know this, which is weird considering how much i love the film. Will rewatch soon with this in my mind. Thanks, anon from last thread.

Very good point. Another outcome of the internet and the several ways to choose cultural goods is the fact that what we call "niche" is often quite sizable when we consider it in inherent terms and more than enough to provide a self-sufficient supply-demand dynamic going. Wiki says otherwise and suggests it remains a work in progress:
>On October 25, 2016, Scream Factory released a two-disc Collector's Edition of the film, including the supposedly lost footage.[28] The website states: "We know that the biggest question you might have is: Will there be a 'Director's Cut' of the film? The answer is yes—but with some caveats. We are working on putting together a version that will be close to Blatty's original script using a mixture of various film and videotape sources that we have been provided with."
>In speaking to the process of creating the Legion director's cut, Blu-ray producer Cliff MacMillan explains further as to the journey to get there and the outcome: "We conducted an exhaustive search through a pallet of film assets from the original shoot to re-create William Peter Blatty's intended vision. Unfortunately, that footage has been lost to time. To that end, we turned to VHS tapes of the film's dailies to assemble the director's cut. However, even some of that footage was incomplete, so scenes from the theatrical re-shoot were used to fill in the gaps. This director's cut is a composite of varying footage quality from the best available sources."

The Last Man on Earth and The Earth Dies Screaming, both big influences on Romero

80s was all about crack & cocaine. Even the New York Mets won a World Series by snorting a lot of cocaine. Shit just works, apparently.

what did everyone think of "The Mouse Trap"
I thought it was an excellent and exhilarating film that is cleverly elevated by its usage of familiar stock characters (I won't say which one because I don't want to spoiler this excellent film for you folx)
It is sexy smart and scary! A perfect addition to your 'horror-movie' collection!

>But this is on another level entirely. It's just incomprehensibly bad.
Yeh I remember renting it back in the 90s and feeling ripped off. Such a boring and ramshackle plot and just every scene sucked, except for the one in the very beginning with Matthew Mcannspellhisname in it. That was pretty scary. The one before they get to the house.

It wasn't good but it satisfies my OCD of watching every public domain horror movie I can find. Looking forward to Scream Boat soon.

How's Crackoon?
Seems to be the cocaine animal clone that has the biggest effort into it outside of the original Cocaine Bear.
Which is not saying much since the clones have been loathsome so far, but still

Spanish/Portuguese production. Salazar too busy keeping Mozambique and Angola.
