Retcon is good as it makes Michael just a human serial killer. Kills is fun watching him tank the entire town after playing possum. Ends is mostly good until the end which is atrocious.

The whole bit with the mob chasing around some retard who isn't Michael was pretty bad, but besides that I think Kills DID have the best kills in the entire series, which allows me to overlook some of its flaws. Entertaining movie for the most part, I think people hate on it more than it probably deserves.

For me the only passable one is the first one and it's still got some dumb tension-breaking shit like the wiseass black kid going OHHHHH SHEEEIT IMMA GETTING OUT OF HERE during a tense scene. My entire theater burst out laughing
>Kills
EVIL DIES TONIGHT. 75% of the movie is muh mob justice

Movie is barely even about Michael although it's better than Kills, which isn't saying much
>>
I have a question what did you feel while watching the skinning scene in Terrifier 2? I heard some people where disgusted and others had the time of their life but I wasn't sure what the movie wanted from me to be honest. It looked too fake to make me feel anything, also doesn't help that the movie is silly up to this point but at the same time it was too "real" to be funny to me.

Haven't read any of you actually discussing The Substance besides coomers and "its good" but here we go.

Took me awhile to acclimate to the tone but I think this works great as a straightforward Tales From The Crypt 'Requiem For a Dream' episode if you engage with it on that wavelength without getting bogged down in ancillary thematic canards about motherhood, feminism or "satire" critiques. Just a very effective doppleganger Frankenstein fiction using maximalist sound design music video editing to make its addiction theme explicit as hyper-visceral body horror.

The mechanical plot logics may be a little half-baked but it's pretty ingenious how the bifurcated structure affords us the ability to experience the seductive allure, costs and consequences at both ends of the age-addiction destructive progression in a conflicting parallel simultaneity that is temporally precluded in a more realistic story.
---
I've seen a lot of film people taking it too seriously and feeling let down by expectations for a lack of complexity and depth in theme and message, for having "nothing to say".
Seems to be the latest instance of a kind of fascinating trend and conundrum ala Longlegs, Terrifier or Malignant in a post-A24 "elevated"-horror world whereby attempting to make campy indulgent B-movies but with a budget and heightened aesthetic inverts the traditional cultural matrix of signs and signifiers short-circuiting people's uptake apparatus for engaging with and digesting the work.

As post-structuralist argue texts do not exist in isolation as such, they are dialectical instantiations in dialogue with a corpus of other works that informs your evaluative heuristics and perception.

Think there's an interesting crit theory write up there for genre grad students.

2018 Suspiria had some strong points but it really didn't need all of the Bader-Meinhoff and holocaust stuff. Mia Goth was good in it, and Swinton was good as Madame Blanc. In general the characterisation of the coven and them feeding off their young proteges was conveyed well. But the twist was poor and robbed the story of it's hero. If Guadagnino really wanted to make a part two, he should have made a completely different, commercially appealing film, more like the original.

The amount of fresh faced 18 year bitches I have seen and went “yeah, this girl don’t hit the wall” and then see them hit the wall at 19-21 always proves me wrong. You just see a young girl that’s flawless and you “yup, no way the wall gets this one” or “she looks like she will age well” but time and time again, they all age like shit.

>On to the movies, I heard 1 is incredible but 2 is really bad from my Mom.
That's basically it.
Like the novel: almost all the best stuff is on the kids side. I think King kind of knew this, which is why the structure of the novel flits back and forth between the past and present. By cleanly splitting up the story into Parts 1 and 2, the filmmakers just ended up shooting themselves in the foot.
Also, it doesn't help that Part 2 has a few really strange tonal choices and changes that just make the whole thing worse. Waste of a fairly good cast.

Thanks for highlighting your question, since I hadn't seen it before. I'd say it's worth watching Ju-on The Grudge 2 if you haven't seen it before.

I definitely prefer the first film, because they take the narrative in some more peculiar directions by the end of the film, but it's more hauntings with the same ghosts, so it delivers in that way.

I'd also recommend the 2 10th anniversary films: Black Ghost and White Ghost, they follow new hauntings, so it's something different for the series.

Yeah when I heard that's what they did I was flabbergasted that they thought it was a good idea. The only plus I could think of is it creates a clear stop point for part 1. If they kept it with the intertwining timelines then it would make it harder to have a good ending and beginning for the two points I guess.

I'm not quite as much off a horror connesiur as you since I don't understand those references, but I did enjoy the final act. Good mix of goofy, crazy, and disturbing. I disagree with the other anon here that always complains about how long it is, I think the movie is the perfect length, especially after seeing Longlegs recently and thinking it ended 30 minutes too early. The Substance took the time it needed to unleash the full potential of its concept.
My only complaints are:
It was a bit too on the nose with its metaphors, and it had a bit of needless exposition (panning back to shots we've already seen to explain plot developments that we could have inferred on our own).
So in a way it didn't treat its audience as intelligently as it should have.

I'm referencing movies like Brain Damage, Basket Case, Society for the effects and schlock content.
For the length, it is maybe a bit bloated in the middle but I did enjoy in the 3rd how it seemed to ask 'what if where most horror films would end we just kept going, and going to the bitter end of the story's natural conclusion.
yeah there some bizarre choices for communicating information like the old man/nurse at the diner with the 6 different 'remember this' indicators was one thing but I think at a certain point, like the pop up bubble flashback for the gifted cook book, you have to interpret some of that stuff as an invitation from the director clueing you in to how goofy things are about to get.

it's funny how very Hollywood this production seems on the surface but it was made with a crew that in whole has touched basically every big French film in recent decades and some of that comes through in specific choices (Enter the Void, Titane etc) imo

The sound design was so fucking extra and crazy too, distractingly so at times for me

The wonderful boobs were great and the shitty cgi was even better. This was good schlocky fun with a bunch of great kills and laughable effects. I didn't bother paying close attention to the plot and I don't think I missed much. The acting was mostly hammy and poorly delivered. Most of the set design felt like a stage play or a movie from the 1960s but even that kind of worked for the feel of the movie. As mentioned earlier, the lighting and overall aesthetic was very strange and likely intentional to enhance whatever 3D effects a theater-goer could have experienced. It was clear which scenes were supposed to be the 3D scenes and they were actually a lot of fun. I'm not sure who I would recommend this to outside of the horror fan who can appreciate unintentionally bad cinema. I'm glad this was my first Argento directed movie.

Watched Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (2015)
A very strange and unique movie, more interesting than enjoyable. It doesn't have much going for it, the editing is mediocre to perhaps even bad, there's no gore, there's no special effects, the characters aren't all that interesting (Main character is extremely unlikable but it's fairly obvious he's meant to be), etc. However at the same time it doesn't feel like it's missing much. The guy just wanted to make some weird movie and he succeeded

>Wracked with guilt over the suicide of her bullied sister, young karate student Megumi accompanies four older friends on a trip into the woods: smart girl Aya, her druggie boyfriend Také, full-figured model Maki, and nerdy Naoi. Things start to go badly when Maki finds a parasitical worm inside a fish - and wolfs it down, in the hope that it will keep her skinny. Her stomach later feels horrible and she relieves herself in an outhouse. The parasitic worm she ate had apparently laid eggs in her stomach and came out of in her diarrhea attack. Soon after, they are attacked by a crowd of poo-covered undead, who emerge from the outhouse toilet Maki used. The group seeks refuge in the home of the strange Dr. Tanaka, who conducts experiments on the zombies and the parasites, and who has another fate in mind for the five strangers. Can Megumi's karate help them escape, or will she have to rely on the liberating power of flatulence to defeat her demented captor?

The song played in the climax of The Substance is "Ugly and Vengeful" by Anna Von Hauswolff, off of her album "Dead Magic" pictured here.
It's a good album, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear it in a movie since I always thought it was quite dramatic and felt like a movie score. But, it's not death metal. It's not metal at all.

iirc, the steam version worked fine for me back when I played it nearly 10 years ago.
Maybe the gog version will work better out of the box (and be simple to pirate with something like gog-games.to) but if you own it on steam you can probably install the Unofficial Bloodlines Patch and be good to go

I'm really glad you enjoyed, it's a lesser Argento for sure but i still maintain his only truly bad film is Giallo.

One legged black kid who smokes a pipe, wears a red hood, and lives inside bamboo, he comes out and plays pranks on people in the countryside, compared to some of the other creatures he's pretty harmless, just an annoying little nig.
